  • Reflecting on the 5779 Temple SeasonConfirmation is over. The Annual Meeting is behindus. The Garage Sale was once again a huge success. As the June events at temple have now concluded, wemark an end to yet another temple “season.”

Now, during July and August, not only have thingsslowed down a bit as we begin preparing for the nexttemple season and the High Holy Days in a fewmonths, it also is a time when we enjoy all of the manywonderful opportunities that living in the CapitalRegion offers to us. I hope that everyone takes advan-tage of the recreational and cultural activities andenjoys the warmth, leisure and being outdoors thatsummertime brings (especially after a LONG Albanywinter).

As another Temple season comes to an end, it alsogives us pause to reflect upon all of the many blessingsthat enrich our lives being part of our special BethEmeth family. During this past year, our TemplePresident, Andrew Safranko, has encouraged andinvited many of our congregants, in various venues, to“share their Beth Emeth story”; what brought them toBeth Emeth, the impact Beth Emeth has had on theirlives and how Beth Emeth has enriched their connec-tion to Judaism. From Board Meetings to the Bulletin, from Boca to SPAC and everywhere in between, it hasbeen heartwarming hearing all of the various ways

being part of our special temple family really doesmake a difference.

With this said, I would like to present a challenge toall of us to consider during the summer months asanother new temple season begins and the High HolyDays are on the horizon.

Reach out to a friend, a neighbor, some-one with whom you work that is Jewishand might not yet be affiliated with aparticular congregation OR had been andare now unaffiliated. Share YOUR BethEmeth story and the impact CBE has hadon YOUR life and invite them to join youfor a particular event, be it a ShabbatService, Saturday morning Torah Study, our weekly Lunch and Learns, ourWelcome Back Shabbat Dinner, the HighHoly Days or at a TRG, TRIBE,Sisterhood or Brotherhood activity. Whatever might resonate, extend the invitation! Truthbe told, ALL of us need to be connected to communityespecially considering the challenges confronting ustoday as Jews in America. You are our best ambassa-dors in order to welcome new members to our con-gregational family and to begin their own “Beth Emethstory” as well.

It is hard for me to believe that it was thirty-four yearsago this month that I moved to Albany to begin myrabbinate at Beth Emeth and thus my own “Beth Emethstory” began. Who knew then that we would welcomea second child here and then go on to mark every lifecycle event in our family here at CBE, a bris, b’naimitzvah, a wedding and, tragically, a funeral. BethEmeth is an integral part of the fabric of our family’slife.

Similarly, how very blessed I feel to have shared in thelives of our many members now for severalgenerations. That bond, that relationship, our mutualconnection as part of the CBE family not only hasenriched my rabbinate but has blessed my life. Forthat, I am most grateful, appreciative and trulyHONORED to be the Rabbi of this wonderful andvenerable congregation, “the fourth oldest Reformcongregation in America!”

Recognizing All We Have AcheivedIt is hard to believe that the first year of my presidencyis over and I am about to begin my last and final yearas a member of the Board of Trustees. For almost 14years, I have attended our monthly meeting on the firstMonday of every month from September to June. Overthe past 10 years, I have had the privilege to serve onthe Executive Committee/Leadership Team.

When I look back, I revel in all ouraccomplishments but also look forwardto completing the goals I have set for thelong-range plan for our congregation. Weare well on our way in this process and Ilook forward to your input as we finalizeour plan over the coming months.

At our last Board Meeting in June, in addition to ourBoard, we welcomed members who completed theLeadership Engagement Class and the new Presidentsof our Sisterhood and Brotherhood. I had the privilegeof presenting the D’Var Torah that evening. The Torahportion was B’midbar which focused on a census orcounting of all Israelite males over the age of 20. Inaddition to discussing the counting and purpose of acensus, I provided a review of the accomplishments of

each person who attends board meetings. If you areinterested, please view at: vimeo.com/341840704. Aspecial thank you to Shara Siegfeld for her help, insight and production of this video.

In addition to thanking and appreciating all the hardwork and effort of the Board, I challenged everymember to think outside the box for their committeesso that we can ensure the vitality of Congregation BethEmeth. In business and life, I hate the expression, thatwe have to do something because it was always donethat way. As such, I join in Rabbi Shpeen’s challengeto share your Beth Emeth story this summer. We areblessed to be part of such a strong and caring commu-nity. Likewise, if you have any ideas of how we can beeven stronger, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Have a great summer!Andrew Safranko, President

The 2019 Consultation on Conscience in Washington,DC was a great success! Beth Emeth had a strongcongregational delegation with Jill Goodman,Cantor Schechtman, Arleen Stein, Barbara Zaron andme in attendance. We worshiped with and learnedfrom 1,200 Reform Jews driving social justice through-out the US and Canada. Speakers included leaders likeUS House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and US SenatorChris Coons of Delaware and strong activists likeDesmond Meade and Norma Pimentel. To view theConsultation recordings go to:rac.org/2019-consultation-conscience-livestream-recordings.

We learned from social justice leaders--including Jewishteen advocates--about how they engaged people andmade a difference! The Reform Movement will continueto foster movement on racial justice, reproductivejustice, immigration justice, gun violence prevention, climate change, and more.

Help expand our Social Action teams anddevelop plans of action regarding howwe, at CBE, can influence policy and pro-gram development and implementationhere in New York. If you’re interested in learning more or getting involvedplease contact me.I look forward to hearing from you,
