Florida CelebrationsThe celebration of our 180th anniversary is well un-derway and included two wonderful events this winterheld in South Florida (in Boca Raton and Sarasota)joined by over 200 people to share in the festivities.

Heartfelt thanks to those who made each event such agreat success: Jane and Mark Levine for their annualunderwriting of the Boca Shabbat as well as Sara Leeand Barry Larner/Diane and Ira Rubtchinksy (AYELETTOURS) for hosting the cocktail reception; Larry and

Doreen Smith for providing the dinner wine; AmyManchester for the table centerpieces; Nancy andBarry Simon / Beth and Mark Scher for providingdessert. Once again, David Siegal graciously providedthe underwriting for the Sarasota Shabbat Brunch. OurCBE ace photographers were Billy Golderman (Boca)and Susan Hager (Sarasota).

The celebration is off to a great start and continueswith many special events all spring. Looking forwardto EVERYONE sharing in this momentous milestone inthe history of our congregation as the “fourth oldestReform Congregation in America.”YESTERDAY.....TODAY....ALWAYS!

Over two weekends in January, more than 200 peoplegathered to celebrate Beth Emeth’s 180th Anniversary-not in Albany, but in Florida. The warmth and depthof feeling for Beth Emeth was amazing and inspiring.

Some attendees were current members of Beth Emeth, others were not. But everyone shared some connectionto and through Beth Emeth. Without Beth Emeth, thoseconnections and that community would not exist.

Returning to Albany, at February’s Shabbat Unpluggedfollowed by Shabbat dinner shared by over 60 people,it was wonderful to witness more of these connectionsand community being fostered at Beth Emeth.Wherever life takes you and whatever befalls you, BethEmeth is there for you.

Perhaps this is a key reason for thesuccess of the 180th AnniversaryEndowment/Sulpture Garden TerraceBrick Campaign: so many want to leavea personal connection to futuregenerations of the Beth Emeth commu-nity, as well as to help ensure that thecommunity will always exist, long afterthey are no longer physically present.

In Florida, it was heartwarming to see and hear peoplecatching-up and sharing stories and memories of BethEmeth, just as it was coming home listening to bothfamiliar and new melodies at the Shabbat Unpluggedservice sung by yet another generation. May ourcommunity continue always to thrive!

Mayor to Declare March 25, 2018CBE Day in Albany!March 25, 2018 is CBE’s actual 180 Birthday! Inrecognition of this significant milestone two verywonderful things are happening.

First, our Einhorn Center for Jewish Education isthrowing a birthday party that morning for all of ourkids. When we began planning last summer, weknew that to be meaningful, our year-long celebra-tion had to touch all members of our congregationalfamily. We understood that would necessitate havinga variety of events reflecting the diverse interests, ages, and backgrounds of our members. Coordinat-ing our efforts with those of our clergy, staff, lay lead-ers and affiliates we’ve tried to do that….and in thatvein, Sunday, March 25 is all about and for our kids, our future. We’re so excited that Einhorn CenterDirector, Shara Siegfeld, is planning an awesome

celebration and hope that YOUR kids will be part of it!We’re certain that it will be a day theywill remember!

Second, in recognition of CBE’s storied history, vibrant present and ongoing consequential involve-ment with social action and inter-faith/inter-religiousefforts in Albany, we are extremely pleased andproud to tell you that Mayor Kathy Sheehan will beproclaiming March 25, our birthday, as CongregationBeth Emeth Day in the City. We are most appreciativeof the Mayor for bestowing this significant recogni-tion upon our beloved congregation.

There’s still more to come! Please be on the look-outfor information about the variety of interestingupcoming anniversary events. We look forward toseeing you and celebrating with you!

Warm Regards,Julie and Andy Safranko

Sisterhood

CBE’s Sisterhood is one of hundreds of congregationalSisterhoods affiliated with WRJ, (Women of ReformJudaism.) According to their website, “(WRJ) strength-ens the voice of women worldwide and empowersthem to create caring communities, nurturing congre-gations, cultivate personal and spiritual growth andadvocate for and promote progressive Jewish values.”It takes dedication, guidance and leadership to fulfilleach of these tenets, and there are several CBE womenwhom have played a major role in doing just that.

It is a pleasure to announce that in early March,Robin Sobol, a member of the Sisterhood LeadershipTeam and board member of the congregation will behonored at the WRJ Fried Leadership Convention inNashville, TN. In Pirkei Avot, the section of Mishna referred to asEthics of the Fathers 4:2, Rabbi Shimon Ben Azzaideclares “Mitzvah Goreret Mitzvah”, one fulfillmentof a commandment or performance of a good deed, leads to another. Mitzvah Goreret Mitzvah is also afantastic United Jewish Federation of North Eastern NYcoordinated program to teach 6th graders the impor-tance of tzedakah. The program’s goal is to educateabout how to make informed philanthropic decisionsand to ensure that the charitable nature of Judaism iscarried forth by our Jewish youth.

Under the guidance of their extraordinary teacher,

Andrew Abramowitz, small groups of our studentsresearched and chose Jewish causes they felt weredeserving of contributions. All of the 6th graders at theprogram presented their charity before peers fromother Capital Region Religious Schools. There was ahead to head competition, resulting in one charitybeing voted the ultimate winner.

Our students shined and were thewinners - CBE can be very proud!Their selected charities were Lev LaLev, a girls orphan-age in Netanya Israel and Yad Sarah, which provides aspectrum of services designed to make life easier forthe sick, disabled, and elderly in Israel. As a reward fortheir success, tzedakah collected in our school thisyear will be donated to the two charities our6th graders chose. Amazing work SUPERSTAR 6thgraders!
