School Notes

Hebrew School is right around the corner! Hebrew School for grades 1-8 will begin on Tuesday, September 12. Sunday School for

kindergarten and preschool will begin on Sunday, September 17.

We are looking forward to this exciting year! It will be the first time in many years that

we have a kindergarten Sunday School class and our thanks goes to Andrea Rabinovitz

who will be teaching this year. Our mornings will focus on the Aleph-Bet, bible stories,

and holidays. Our weekday students will be spending time learning with Rabbi Elyssa and Hazzan Matt

Austerklein as well as Leora Cohen, Sarah Greenblatt, and Ellen Moss. Our class sessions will revolve around

holidays, making Jewish choices - and why we should, and being prayerful.

High school students will have special opportunities throughout the year to study with Rabbi Elyssa and

Hazzan Matt as well as informal gatherings with other teens.

Beth El has traditionally not charged religious school tuition - as the congregation feels it is the responsibility

of the community to educate all ages.

School Alumni Retreat. I was definitely going to attend, even though the retreat coincided with my family’s last week in Maryland, just three days before moving to Ohio.

I was in the fourth graduating class of the Rabbinical School of Hebrew College in 2011. Hebrew College as an institution was founded in 1921 as a Hebrew Teacher’s College in Roxbury, Massachusetts. It subsequently moved to Brookline, and then to their campus in Newton, where I attended. The Rabbinical School was founded in 2003 as the first full-time pluralistic rabbinical program at an accredited college.

Several Northeast Ohio clergy have come from Hebrew College! I am sure many of you know Rabbi Lee Moore, who was ordained two years before me, and works both at the Lippman Kanfer Foundation, and as the Kent State Hillel Rabbi. Rabbi Scott Roland, who just celebrated his one-year anniversary at Shaarey Tikvah in Beachwood, was ordained two years after me. And finally, Cantor Rick Lawrence, at Temple Emanu El in Solon, was ordained in 2014. I am blessed to have many wonderful colleagues in the area, including these folks who share my schooling.

I was drawn to Hebrew College for a few significant reasons. The focus of the program is in the Beit Midrash – the study hall. Much of the learning happens not only through sitting in a classroom, but in being face-to-face with a partner (chevrutah). One is required to think deeply about the material and about oneself in reflection with another person. And though this way of learning Jewish text is done in a traditional way, each student is encouraged to be committed to going on his or her own spiritual journey with no dictation from the professor/rabbis as to how that should look. Just as each one of us is unique, so too is each spiritual journey, as long as it is done in a seeking, dedicated, and grounded way.

While on this June retreat, though we didn’t study much in chevrutah, I was struck by the open and thoughtful sharing that we did in circles. The way in which rabbis could talk about our work with such gratitude, while reflecting on challenges and exchanging tools for working through difficulties, was inspiring and fulfilling.

As we - Beth El and I - begin our rabbi - congregation partnership, I think it is worth a look at the general mission of Hebrew College as values we can embrace together:

1. Ahavat Torah - A love of learning. Our conversations, life experiences, and decisions may be rooted in what Jewish wisdom and God have to teach us. It is through a sense of love of these teachings that we blossom together in our full lives.

2. Areivut - Embracing Communal Responsibility. Whether we are talking about the Beth El Community, The Akron Jewish community, or the Greater Akron Community (or beyond), we recognize that we are all interconnected. We strive to lift up everyone around us through deeds of loving-kindness and compassion.

3. Elu v’Elu - Engaging with diversity. God made each of us unique, and in this way we can dialogue and grow because we think and behave differently. Differences can actually make all of us stronger, rather than coercing everyone to be the same.

4. Yetzira - Fostering Jewish Creativity. The more we can express the meaning of our relationships with the Jewish Tradition, the deeper the relationship. Creativity - through the arts - and general innovation, not only inspires us to be connected, but also allows us to be in fuller relationship with ourselves and our community.

These four mission points all come together under the umbrella of spirituality, of grasping to reach beyond ourselves and connect with something greater - what some of us call God. The biggest reason for me to plan and attend the Hebrew College retreat, was to come together with a group of fellow travelers whom I know are also reaching out to God/the Divine through prayer, learning, and fellowship.

I look forward to reaching with you, too, as we explore the depths of what it means to soak up Jewish wisdom and connect with each other and beyond.

BULLETIN OF BETH EL CONGREGATION Page 9

1. Joey Weisenberg (www.joeyweisenberg.com) – We are living in the age of the niggun, that accessible genre of

wordless melody developed by the Jewish mystics to achieve closeness to God. Joey Weisenberg is a Jewish musician

and prayer leader who has not only mastered the art of the niggun, but is a leader in changing the way that Jewish

communities think about creating great musical and spiritual experiences. Joey currently serves as the Director of

bHadar Center for Jewish Communal Music, in addition to producing six CDs, authoring a textbook on communal

singing, and appearing as a frequent scholar-in-residence across the USA. But most importantly, he is a friend and a

mensch. I got to Joey while in cantorial school, and even got to be part of the choir on his first CD. I was immediately

struck by how he, as a prayer leader, was always able to put the community’s voice first, and to simultaneously help

them aspire to better musicianship, spirituality, and connectedness to each other. These methods, along with Joey’s

own soulful melodies, have deeply influenced my own repertoire and style of prayer leadership.

2. The Milken Archive of Jewish Music (www.milkenarchive.org) – For those of you who love Jewish, classical,

and/or jazz music, the Milken Archive is a gold mine of American Jewish creativity in these genres. The archives

CDs, online exhibits, and playlists are a Jewish musical safari worth exploring. They include music from the likes of

Leonard Bernstein, Ernest Bloch, and Dave Brubeck, along with American synagogue music in a wealth of styles. I

have a personal interest in these intersections of Western music and Judaism. This is in part because of my vocal

background as a classically-trained baritone and cantor, but also because of my orchestral background as a cellist (I

played actively from ages 10-21, and even played in a Jewish string quartet as a high school student). I have taught

frequently on Judaism and classical music, and enjoyed great collaborations with local orchestras and theaters during

my time in the DC area. I look forward to bringing my knowledge and interest in this area to Akron!

3. Pharaoh’s Daughter (www.pharaohsdaughter.com) – Basya Schechter grew up in a Hasidic family in Borough

Park, but her journey (and her music) have taken her to amazing places. Blending a psychedelic sensibility and a pan-

Mediterranean sensuality, Basya Schechter leads her band, Pharaoh's Daughter, through swirling Hasidic chants,

Mizrachi and Sephardi folk-rock, and spiritual stylings filtered through percussion, flute, strings and electronica. She

currently serves as the Hazzan and Music Director of Romemu, a leading innovative synagogue on Manhattan’s Upper

West Side. Basya and I first met in Falls Village, CT, where we studied together at the Davennen’ Leadership

Training Institute (DLTI) — a two-year creative prayer training run by the Jewish Renewal movement. It was at this

same retreat that I had the blessing to meet the love of my life, Rabbi Elyssa! Rabbi Elyssa and I continue to be

involved in Jewish Renewal and often attend their clergy conference, OHALAH, each January.

4. Jacob “Spike” Kraus (www.jacobspikekraus.com) – A rising star in Jewish rock, Jacob grew up in Belmont, MA

where Rabbi Elyssa was his confirmation teacher. His smooth, pleasant voice and well-developed rock style make

him a great addition to the contemporary Jewish music scene. I met Jacob at the Cantors Assembly Convention this

past spring and loved his style. By the way, for those Beth El members that are Floridians – next year’s Cantors

Assembly Convention will be held from June 3-7, 2018 in Palm Beach Gardens. Consider this an early invitation to

come see over two hundred cantors perform (including yours truly)!

5. Mostly Kosher (www.mostlykosher.com) – Self-described as a “post-klezmer indie band,” Mostly Kosher

“radically reconstructs Judaic and American cultural musical roots through ravenous klezmer beats and arresting

Yiddish refrains.” True story: They are the first Jewish music ensemble to be featured at Disneyland! But their music

is definitely not just for kids – it is old world Jewish with an indie/rock twist, and yet still feels super contemporary

(for my mavens of American bands, think Andrew Bird or Squirrel Nut Zippers with Jewish roots). I instantly fell in

love with this band when I saw them live this past May, and you can bet that I will want to bring them to Akron in the

next few years.

————

I hope that you enjoy exploring these artists and expanding your Jewish musical palette. But more importantly, I hope

that something from these artists touches your heart and your story. Great music is not just a “wow” experience – it

points to deep parts of ourselves, opens our feelings, and channels our yearnings. In listening and engaging with this

music, I hope that you may re-engage with (or rediscover) a part of your Jewish self. I look forward to being your guide

on that journey.

mission was to bring Jewish children together from around the state, it drew campers from all over New England,

New York and New Jersey. My parents had been founders of the camp with my mother serving as Treasurer and my

father serving as a board member. I started going when I was 6 (my brother who was 9 years older was there as a

counselor) and my attendance continued for a decade. Later I returned as a counselor when Ramah ran the camp that

year. For someone from a small town with few Jewish peers this was a major life influence. The spirit, observance

and emotional experiences were the impetus for my commitment to being involved in Jewish activities in college, as a

Jewish educator and as a Synagogue member

This is the reason I made sure my own children attended residential summer camp to have a similar experience.

Thanks to Beth El’s scholarships, my children were able to experience Camp Ramah either in Canada or California.

Now my grandchildren are attending Jewish summer camp; one at Ramah and one at Camp Wise with Beth El

assistance this year. In past years, a number of Beth El families have sent children to Ramah or Wise. Many of these

alums later have taken on roles as Jewish leaders in their communities

I would like for our members with children of camp age to consider planning for a Jewish summer camp

experience for their own children. Yes, it is expensive and requires resources, but leadership at Beth El wants to

encourage this activity and has scholarship funds to help. I know that Rabbi and Hazzan will join leadership in this

effort to encourage camp attendance in the future. This is another example of how we as a congregation can help our

children to grow Jewishly.

My best,

Harvey
