The Alpha and the Omega – Part 13: The Church

Once the Holy Spirit had come at Pentecost, The Church began to take shape. In the course of both human history and Church history, the birth and rapid formation and expansion of the Church is miraculous. No purely human creation can equal it. Within a span of roughly 20 years after Christ’s Ascension, the Church was established and growing. New Testament scholars believe that the first document of the New Testament was First Thessalonians, written by St. Paul in 55 AD. By that time, many churches had already been planted in the areas around the Mediterranean Sea: Rome, Corinth, Ephesus, Galatia, Colossus, Philippi and more. The Mass as we know it today wasn’t yet formed, but parts of it from that time would be very familiar to us now. There were already in place bishops, priests and deacons. All seven of the sacraments were in place. Some things were quite different then. Baptisms followed a year-long intensive training program. Initiates had to confess their sins publicly and were immersed in water without any clothing on. Who would want to try that now? The earliest churches were home churches. Someone who owned a house big enough would have the people come over. In some cases, such as in Corinth, a dinner party was held first, then came the Mass. The earliest churches were far from perfect. For one thing, many converts to Christ ran into conflict with other members of their families who did not convert and were steadfastly devout to their Jewish heritage. There were major conflicts between those who believed that, in the case of Gentiles, in order to become Christian, one first had to become Jewish. There were conflicts and arguments over circumcision. St Paul had to reprimand the church in Corinth because too many of the dinner guests were getting drunk at the pre-Mass party. The Church has had its enemies from the very start. There were some who could not fathom what Jesus was talking about when He said His followers must eat His flesh and drink His blood, so they left. The Roman authorities supposed that Christians were a cannibalistic cult. They sent spies to some of these home churches who eaves-dropped on the Mass. They heard something about eating someone’s flesh and drinking his blood, and concluded that Christians were cannibals. And then of course, Christianity was outlawed, and Christians were captured and thrown to the lions in the Colosseum. But then came Constantine, and the Church was free to grow and flourish. The Church is One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic. No one ever said it was also perfect. The Church is populated by fallen sinners, so expectations of perfection are misplaced. We can expect perfection from God, not from sinners. Still, the Church is the Body of Christ, the creation of God in the Holy Spirit, who is ever-present in The Church. God still speaks to His Church through Holy Scripture and Sacred Tradition, and He touches us and sanctifies us through the Sacraments. The Church is One because God is One, and He intends His Church to be unified. We have divisions and denominations, but both the Lord and many in the Church seek visible unity. The Church is Holy, not because its members live perfectly Holy lives, but because The Church is set apart for God and His service. The Church is Apostolic because Jesus entrusted His Church to His disciples. He didn’t leave them to themselves to build and sustain The Church on their own strength and ingenuity, but sent the Holy Spirit to strengthen the Apostles, and to recall to our minds all that Jesus taught and to lead us into all Truth. The Church is Catholic because of its wholeness: Christ’s offer of salvation is for the whole world, to each one of us, and because God is fully revealed in Jesus Christ. The Church is universal and exists in all the world. To be continued . . .

CASINO NIGHT VIRTUAL EXPERIENCE

Dear Parents and Friends of Notre Dame Catholic School,

Due to COVID 19, we were unable to have our traditional Casino Night fundraiser event. The proceeds from this fundraiser represent a significant amount on our school budget. Therefore, we would like to offer a “virtual Casino Night” centered around 6 spectacular events with suggested donations.

If you are interested in participating in any of these events, please call the school office at 830.257.6707. All items are offered on a first come, first served basis.

Many of these events involve large groups and have proposed dates. In the event COVID 19 issues prevents us from offering these events at the proposed date, we will reschedule to a later date. We will always adhere to the recommended guidelines to maintain the safety and health of everyone.

We have pre-sold over $7,000 in sponsorships. These donors have elected to let the school keep the donations. If you are interested in donating to the school to support our fundraising effort in lieu of purchasing an auction item, please contact the school office.

We appreciate your continued support of our parish and school.

Blessings, Sandi Killo
