A scheme to establish a big chicken farming enterprise in Tzaneen by local multimillionaire Makapane Modipa, wide-ly known as Colin MacP, owner of MacP Construction, has residents and farmers along the Letaba River all the way to Letsitele up in arms.

The proposed location for three (to begin with?) broiler houses with a capacity of 50 000 chicks each, is across the road from Modipa’s palatial residence (referred to by people as Colin’s Palace) on the road to Deerpark and about fi ve kilo-meters from Tzaneen’s CBD.

According to a notice of an environmental impact assessment (EIA) the piece of land is known as “Portion 4 of the farm Doorn-hoek 535 LT within the Greater Tzaneen Local Municipality”.

Bordering on this piece of land are upper class residential areas such as Riverside and Tzangeni and the new Doorn-hoek Equestrian Estate is also almost right next to it.

The process to clear the way for this development started

in February this year, when a newspaper advertisement an-nounced the plan. At the end of May notices were served on various people in the area, to inform them of the EIA process.

Only then did people realise that the proposed chicken broilers would be erected in an area that has already been ap-proved (but not yet proclaimed) as a residential area within the town’s borders.

Another interesting aspect is that LEDET (Limpopo Eco-nomic Development, Environment & Tourism) — a provin-cial government department — is clearly part of this scheme, meaning that the state is likely to fi nance the project (with ratepayers’ money).

We spoke to numerous people who would be aff ected by such a farming activity and not a single one accepted it as feasible and permissable.

“We will oppose this project and fi ght it tooth and nail. We will stand together and fi nance legal costs to oppose it in the

highest courts. Tzaneen cannot aff ord the Letaba to be pollu-ted any more, the stink that would come from chicken farming — especially when it rains — will spoil people’s lives and hy-giene in general will be compromised,” one of Tzaneen most prominent entrepreneurs said.

People choose not to be identifi ed at this stage, since they feel it is premature to show their hand now. The next step in the process is pending and in the mean time strategic plan-ning is being done. “If this goes ahead, a showdown never seen before in Tzaneen will be witnessed,” one of the neigh-bours in the area warned.

The map above shows the location of the proposed broilers and the adjacent ares that are in close proximity to this piece of land. The closing date for comments from interested and aff ected parties was Wednesday (10 July).

The opinions/statements made herein are that of our readers and does not necessarily refl ect the views and opinions of the Bulletin. The comments of people are given verbatim. We appeal to all who take part in the debates not to use hate-speech or to be insulting toward others.

• Tzaneen’s municipal manager’s salary has increased with R100 000 per year, from R1,2 million to R1,3 million. What do you say?

Die Here voorsien!

lyk soos ‘n Willemwragtag. Kan nakend (of is dit blakend?) gesonde mense so laf wees?

What a loss...Pat Patterson Typical, just like the rest of the country.

Margaret Pretorius Sjoe wat doen hy v so ‘n groot klomp geld? Ry rond nooit in sy kantoor, weti hoe

salarisstrokie 2 weke terug opgetel. R15 000 per maand. Dis verregaande.

Ek werk by n motorplek, en

The CEO of the Letaba FET Col-lege in Tzaneen celebrated ten years in the hot seat last week.

This achievement came through hard work and a passion for edu-cation. Ms Martie Botha has been leading the Letaba FET College since 2003, but has been in edu-cation since 1982.

She was born and bred in Tzaneen and matriculated at Ben Vorster High School. She studied to become a teacher in Pretoria and started her teach-ing career at Frans du Toit High School in Phalaborwa.

Her family moved to Tzaneen aft er ten years in Phalaborwa

and Botha accepted a post at the Tzaneen Technical College as a lecturer. She moved up through the ranks to deputy principal until the merger of FET Colleg-es in 2002. Botha was appointed as the principal/CEO of Letaba FET College, where she now manages three campuses with around 5 000 full-time students!

Botha also received Limpopo Colours as a Kickboxing Offi -cial from 1998-2003 and Protea Colours as the Deputy Manager for the SA Kickboxing team in 2002, 2003 and 2004.

— Retha [email protected] Imported... To combat

the shortage of trained nurses, Mediclinic Tzaneen is currently home to thirteen nurses from India. Mediclinic Southern Af-rica started with a pilot group of twelve nurses from India working in three Western Cape hospitals from September 2007. They now have 215 nurses working in nine-teen hospitals across SA. The for-eign nurses who were on duty at the Mediclinic Tzaneen when we visited, are (front) Srs Lima Jose, Anna Sebastian and Nima Jose, flanked by Ms Marlize Delport (Network Marketing Manager) and Sr Stephanie Hermann (Nurs-ing Manager). At the back are Srs Sujith Scaria, Sunil George, Ka-lappa Anegundi and Bijoy Rajan. Bulletin will publish the full in-teresting story about the visitors in next week’s edition. Hopefully by then we would have had an op-portunity to get to the other six for a photo. Photo: Retha Nel

Ten year milestone for CEO

Gillian Stroeve (79) passed away quietly at her daugh-ter’s home in Tzaneen on 4 July 2013. She had a short but dignified battle with cancer. Gillian was born in Jamaica on 31 March 1934, the daughter of a British Army Officer and moved to England shortly after. She immigrated to the RSA in 1970 and lived in Johan-nesburg until 1994. She then moved to Macadamia Village where she resided until her death. Her husband, Warnar Stroeve, died in 2009, also in Tzaneen. She is survived by her three daughters, Sarah Helen Higgins (Dave De Bruin), Georgia Catherine Hirst (William Jones) and

Nina van Heerden (Guy van Heerden). She will be sadly missed by her seven grand children, Ryall and Drewe Higgins, Hannah, Elaina and Gina Barale and Alex and Devon van Heerden. Her dearest companion, her dog Rosie, was by her side until the very end. “Fly with the Angels Mom,

it’s a Beautiful Day”

Gillian’s memorial service was held on Wednesday at the Macadamia Community Hall. “A special word of thanks to Dr Ig van Rensburg for his professionalism and kindness as well as to all friends and community members for their love and support.”

With sore feet and the SA fl ag draped around her shoulders, Charlott e Steyn (34) marked her halfway milestone of 2663,5 km on the road between Haenerts-burg and Tzaneen in bright pink paint on Saturday.

The dainty blonde woman will walk through all nine provinces and 27 towns and cities in about 191 walking days, following a route of about 5 327 km in the shape of a distorted heart — “just like the one SA has”.

Steyn traded her corporate job and material possessions in Cape Town for a pair of walking shoes and started her journey through the coun-try about four months ago.

The idea of the heart-shaped route came to her when she closed her eyes and saw the image out-line of SA with the outline of a heart within. She immediately dismissed the image as preposter-ous, but knew that she still wanted to walk — more than anything else.

SA’s heart is warped“The image kept returning and bugging me, so

once home I wanted to see what it looked like. I downloaded an image of SA and superimposed the shape of a heart. The heart had trouble fi tt ing in, fi tt ing only when warped, and that is when it all started to make sense, for SA’s heart is warped and requires healing.

The Hearts-in-Motion (HiM)Trail Project raises awareness among the public of SA of major needs which arise at diff erent stages in life. The nine charity organizations which Steyn promotes, in-clude those of children, education, health, dis-abilities, human rights, HIV/Aids, the elderly and animals. HiM also encourages people to actively partake in the journey of life and to give of them-selves where it matt ers most.

She laughs as she looks down at her torn shoes. “I have walked the entire 2 663,5 km to Hae-nertsburg and all the way to Tzaneen in these.”

The next leg of her journey is towards Nelspruit and she is expected to arrive in Cape Town on 17 October.

She has yet to wake up not looking forward to another day of walking and meeting new and interesting people. Steyn says that her body has also adapted to the endurance.

She also never gets bored of walking as it lets her create things in her mind that she later plays out and write about.

“When I have a slow start in the mornings I be-gin with the end in mind. I never question my ability to fi nish the route.”

Let us heal the heart“It starts with one person taking action. For

each person doing so, their actions in turn will ignite another, and if we so continue, we will (one step at a time) contribute to the ripple eff ect that will ensure that SA achieves its potential.” Steyn encourages people to give of them-selves, their time or their money and to rise and heal the distorted heart of the country. ”And in doing so, have fun like I am having. Be creative, original, and think beyond stale reali-ties.”

“May we be blessed with enough foolishness to believe that we can truly make a diff erence and do what others said can’t be done”, Steyn con-cludes.* Visit the Hearts-in-Motion webpage on www.hearts-in-motion.org

Maar snags as ek so lekker in my warm bed slaap maak Iemand my wakker en laat my daaraan dink om hierdie brief te skryf.

dersdag”. Dit was seker een van my hartseerste Moe-dersdae en die kos het swaar in my keel afgegaan. As

Staak dit asseblief.• Ons is jammer as dit aanstoot gee.

Bladmusiek sonder `n padkaart, steeds mooi.

Hoe ondeurgrondelik is sy oordele, hoe onnaspeurlik sy weë!

“You win your batt les on your knees”, sê hy met ‘n glimlag.

Vandag is hy ‘n gerekende makelaar by Smit Garrun, die omvangryke onderneming

“Wan-neer mens so heg saam met kliënte werk,

The GTM’s Letsitele library assisted in training two final year students studying towards a degree in Information Studies at the University of Limpopo. They spent three weeks at the library and then moved on to the Tzaneen library for two more weeks. The students were equipped with librarianship skills and learned about library systems. Seen here are the Letsitele librarian, Ms Ouma Modipane, and the two students, Mss Cali-

fornia Ngobeni and Emily Ntuli.

Girls from 2 years to 22 years can look forward to an exciting Miss Letaba Show competition this year, as the organizers plan a fun fi lled day on Saturday 3 August.

New to the pageant will be a photo competition for mother and child, children or the whole fami-ly. This will be combined with our morning pro-gram where we will hold our baby pageant for all children up to the age of 5. It has also been de-cided to add a “Glitz & Glamour” event for the lit-tle ones, where they can show off in party dresses.

The theme for girls aged 6 to 22 is “Night of the Stars”. With lots of prizes up for grabs this page-ant promises to be new and exciting. The “Glitz & Glamour” event will kick off at 10:00 on Satur-day (3 August) for the litt le ones and the “Night of the Stars” will start off with registration and arrival from 15:00. Crowning of the “Stars” will take place between 19:00 and 20:00.

Entrants don’t need to have any modeling ex-perience as the competition will be judged sole-ly on their performance on the day.

Academy.

Katie Morgets (below) — Miss Limpopo Teen 2013 — recently visited the Letaba Hospi-tal in Nkowankowa, where she spoiled the children in the paediatric ward and taught them about SA history. They spent most of their time making ‘get well soon’ cards for former president Nelson Mandela. She also encouraged the kids to continue praying for him. She took some time to have the children explain what they know about Madiba and how he is a role model to many in South Af-rica. She put together a goodie bag contain-ing educational material and a treat or two to make it more exciting for the children. Katie said “it was a truely rewarding experience and I look forward to doing more of these projects in the near future. Today I learnt to be thankful for the gift of life and to dedicate everyday of my life to making a diff erence in somebody else’s life. It is not always just about what you can give, but also about what you can do for someone else,” she concluded. Katie is a model of the Limpopo Beauty Mo-deling Academy, and in the photo below she is seen with one of the young patients.

Katryn Barwise from Tzaneen was selected as a national semi-fi nalist to represent Limpopo at Miss Earth South Africa ‘13. She has spent a week in Cape Town to att end workshops, events and char-ity projects with the Miss Earth SA Team.

The group of 24 na-tional semi-fi nalists

stayed in three diff erent luxury hotels and the were chauff ered all over the Peninsula, to visit various sight-seeing spots, places of entertainment, schools and numerous other interesting places.

Katryn was chosen with two other fi nalists to att end the Gordon’s Bay Winter Wonder-land Festival of Lights, where they were part of the parade and represented the Miss Earth SA brand. This was one of the highlights of the visit, Katryn said, as she got to meet Mr Richard Loring the Producer and Director of “African Footprint”

The ladies also visited the Southern African Foundation for the conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB), the international body dedicated to seabird rehabilitation. The semi-fi nalists worked at SANCCOB’s facilities, helping out with everyday chores, cleaning the penguin pools, making them Formula which is fi sh liquidized and mixed with vita-mins and supplements.

Finally the ladies had a beach photoshoot on Blouberg Beach. The last evening in Cape Town they watched a musical production by Loring, that showcased Cape Town’s culture.

Back in Johannesburg the group went for a tour at the SAPPI Mills, to see how they make paper. SAPPI is one of the sponsors of Miss Earth SA.

The week was ended by taking part in a cha-rity project with Jersey’s 4 Jozi where Katryn and four other ladies accompanied Tamerin Jardine, the reigning Miss Earth SA ‘12, to do-nate jersey’s at a school in Soweto and plant-ing 95 trees at a school in Orange Farm to cele-brate the 95 years of Nelson Mandela’s life.

“It was a life changing experience and I en-joyed every second of my journey with the Miss Earth SA organisation,” said Katryn.

The big news under the bonnet is actually the smallest engine option, a new 1991 cc direct-injection turbopetrol four with fast-acting piezo injectors for multiple injection, quick multi-spark ignition, fully variable camshaft adjustment on both sides and a controlled oil pump.

In what Stutt gart claims as a world fi rst, it uses the stratifi ed lean burn process in com-bination with turbocharging and external high-pressure exhaust gas recirculation to achieve an average fuel consumption of 5,8 litres per 100 km and CO² emissions of 136 g/km, making it the only car in its class that

doesn’t pay emissions tax.In E200 tune, it delivers 133 kW at 5500

rpm and 300 Nm from 1200-4000 rpm, and disposes of the 0-100 km/h sprint in 7,9 sec-onds. The same engine with E250 mapping, using the same amount of fuel, kicks out 155 kW and 350 Nm, knocking half a second off

the 0-100 time. The diesel range includes the four-cylinder E200 CDI (100 kW/360 Nm), the E220 CDI (same 2143 cc engine but 125 kW and 400 Nm), the E250 CDI (same again, but 150 kW and 500 Nm), and the 2987 cc E350 CDI V6, with 185 kW and 620 Nm.

The new E-Class will be available with ei-ther a six-speed manual transmission or a 7G-tronic auto transmission. The latt er has, how-ever, been updated with a short-term manual that automatically switches back to automatic aft er a set time — which may upset customers who actually enjoy driving their E-Class.

Mercedes-Benz has released full details for the updated 2014 E-Class, that made its SA debut last month — and MBSA has confi rmed that the whole range • sedan, estate, coupé and convertible • will be made available. The new E is a revolution and exquisitely beautiful.

The buggy up! is inspired by the Californian beach buggies of the 1960’s. These buggies, pioneered by people such as American Bruce Meyers, took the simple, reliable Beetle chassis and engine and replaced the steel bodies with glass bre, creating agile, fun vehicles that perfectly re ected the care-free California in which they were created.

That same California feeling is encapsulated in the lightweight steel construction of the two-seater buggy up!, which brings the beach buggy bang up to date. Based on the brand-new up!, the buggy up! keeps its city sibling’s (reinforced) underbody, running gear and drive technology, while the roof-less and door-less exterior is completely redesigned, and the ride height is lowered by 20 mm. Everything is di erent: the bonnet is atter, the bumpers have been reworked and the rear has been completely redesigned.

The buggy up! does not have any C-pillars, and neither does it have a boot like the standard up! model. The bootlid is constructed of two pieces: the main part of the lid lifts upward like a saloon’s bootlid, but the section above the bumper folds down, like the tailgate on a pick-up, making it extremely easy to stow bulky items. On top of the lid, there are also tie-down straps for luggage. Despite all these changes, there’s no mistaking the buggy up! for anything but an up!.

Climb into the buggy up! and you’ll nd specially designed neoprene-covered seats that are 58 mm lower than those in the production model. To match this, engineers reduced the basic angle of the height-adjustable steering wheel by four degrees to an angle of 21 degrees, creating a go-kart like driving position. Passengers also get something to hold on to, in the shape of a sturdy handle on the dash panel, because you never know what lies over the next dune.

Even if there are rainclouds over the next dune, that’s no problem for the buggy up!, because as well as a rudimentary fabric roof, the interior is completely waterproof. The seats have drains in them, as do the sills and the oor. Even the controls for the iPod-compatible infotainment system are waterproof, and you can remove the entire module – including the integrated loudspeakers – so that you’ve got a sound system for your beach party. All you need to add is your favourite Beach Boys tracks.

Volkswagen’s city specialist heads for the beach, mixing an old favourite with a modern twist.

Oh Summer, whereforeart thou?

The early lead was keenly contested between the No 1 Audi of André Lotterer and the No 8 Toyota of Anthony Davidson. By the end of the third hour, however, the Audis had established a clear lead, occupying the rst three places. Chasing their third consecutive Le Mans win, the No 1 Audi led Tom Kristensen’s No 2 Audi by almost a minute until a crank sensor problem in the 7th hour forced them to take a lengthy pit stop. Rejoining the race several laps down in 24th place, they eventually battled their way back to 5th. Running in 2nd place, the No 3 Audi, driven by Oliver Jarvis, also ran into problems, losing several minutes after a puncture. In the 22nd hour they overtook the No 7 Toyota of Nicolas Lapierre to claim third spot. Soon afterwards, Lapierre skidded in the treacherous conditions and hit a wall. Initially he appeared to abandon the car, however he managed to restart it and return it to the pits for some quick repairs. He returned to the track in time to claim 4th place. In the nal hour of racing, Sébastien Buemi in the No 8 Toyota brie y managed to unlap himself, but soon afterwards decided to settle for 2nd place.

The race was won by the No 2 Audi R18 e-tron quattro, with drivers Tom Kristensen of Denmark earning his record ninth victory, Scotsman Allan McNish his third, and Frenchman Loïc Duval earning his rst ever Le Mans win. It was Audi’s twelfth victory in fourteen years. Audi led the No 8 Toyota TS030 Hybrid by a gap of one lap at the end of the 24 hours, and the No 3 Audi completed

the race podium.

On lap three of the race, Allan Simonsen lost control of his No 95 Aston Martin at the

Tertre Rouge corner and hit the barriers. The impact was strong enough to crush one corner of

the roof and the supporting rollcage. Simonsen was reported to be injured, but conscious when he was removed from the car by recovery crews, and taken to the on-site medical centre where he later died from his injuries. The Aston Martin Racing team, who had four other cars in the event, chose to continue in the race at the request of Simonsen’s family.

Due to several serious accidents, the safety car was brought out a record twelve times. Many of

the periods were required for track o cials to make repairs to the safety barriers around the circuit which were damaged in accidents. The safety car periods totalled ve and a half hours of the race.

Louw Swanepoel and his team from the Dui-welskloof Bowls Club put some effort into their outfits and won the award for best dressed team. The letters on their backs spell out ‘Wolkberg 2013’ (read from left to right). The team con-sisted of Erna Swane-poel, Marika Marais, Louw and Koos Marais and their ‘mascot’ An-

rika Marais.

dio daarna luister. Oubal sal ook erken dat

hy baie opgewonde was toe Clive Rice-hulle in 1991 Indië

“It’s not really gambling when you never lose.” — Jennifer Aniston

Bulletin

In a quest to rebuild the team and to reclaim their status in the Premier Soccer League (PSL), Black Leopards have released eighteen players ahead of the new season.

Most of the players who were released featured primarily in the first team last season. This was confirmed by the team’s newly appointed public relations officer, Mr Barry Ramunenyiwa, who said Leopards wanted to make a quick return to the elite league.

Ramunenyiwa said it was coach Kosta Papic’s wish to release all eighteen players as he wanted to rebuild the team. Among the players who were released were Ernot Dzaga, Nkosiyabo Xakane, Humphrey Khoza, skipper Mongedzi Bobe, Azwindini Maphaha, Ayanda Mtshali, Victor Gamuka, Moses Kwena, Ntsolise Gumede, Thulani Nontshingila and Joshua Obaje.

Vincent Mabusela and Postnet Omony were also given free clearance.

Papic recently started with trials in search of new players in Thohoyandou. Speaking about the team’s new season plan, Ramunenyiwa said: “The team will have a complete new look in terms of players. The coach met with board members to discuss plans for the new season. He is focusing on bringing in new players.”

Leopards, who were relegated last season, will make a return to the PSL for the third time if they win the National First Division (NFD) league. “The coach made it clear he would like to give young players from the province a chance to showcase their talent,” Ramunenyiwa added. Leopards will face Witbank Spurs, African Warriors, Milano FC and United FC in the NFD.

— LiN News/Limpopo Mirror

The SA Country Districts (SACD) women’s hockey tournament was hosted in Emalahleni (Witbank) this year, with the Limpopo team hoping to repeat their good result from last year.

This was, however, not to be, with the team, comprising players from Polokwane, Phalaborwa, Tzaneen and Levubu, finishing four places down, in seventh overall position.

The team tried hard and played well throughout, but a 1-1 draw against hosts Mpumalanga on day one, fol-lowed by a 0-2 loss against eastern Gauteng on day two, made finishing in the top two of the pool a tough ask.

A 2-2 draw against KZN Northerns on day three also did not help the team to move up the log. On day four, the team achieved a well-deserved 4-1 win against KZN Coastals, but went down 1-4 to Northern Free State the following day. This set up a play-off match against Northerns Blues on day

six, which saw Limpopo losing 1-3.The final play-off match for Lim-
