CYBERSAFETY in our Digital World:Keeping our children safe

NIS’s digital learning network provides marvelous opportunities for learning that would not otherwise exist – from opportunities to collaborate, to deep investigations and research, to the production of sophisticated output. These opportunities are supported by students having access to Internet at home, when they travel … almost anywhere.

This freedom of access and the opportunities provided for online activities comes at the same type of cost that we, as parents, acknowledge in our responsibility for keeping our children safe - when crossing the road, or in dangerous terrains, or in setting reasonable expectations for behaviours. We may forget that there are significant dangers associated with the Internet, including fraud, scams and sexual predation. We continue to teach cyber safety in our school programmes, but the need for this will always extend beyond school boundaries and into our homes.

Here is one example of a site that a few students have recently accessed:

• Talking to Internet strangers is no more ‘cool’ than talking to strangers at night – and way more dangerous given the anonymity afforded.

• The opportunity given to talk about ‘anything’ in a supposedly private setting seems nothing short of an invitation to engage unsuspecting children in a conversation about – well, anything! We know that students growing (natural) interest in sexuality is easily exploited by predators.

• And the point above is simply made worse by having an ‘Adult Option’ or ‘Unmoderated Section’ available. Really – is that where we want our children going? As for the ‘video’ opportunities …..

• Your security is easily breached by someone who has the intent. This could include addresses, passwords, personal or financial details.

• The disclaimer notes: “Understand that human behavior is fundamentally uncontrollable, that the people you encounter on Omegle may not behave appropriately, and that they are solely responsible for their own behavior. This might be the only reasonable bit of advice offered by the site!

4

My intent here is to highlight the dangers posed by the behaviours associated with using such sites, rather than focusing attention on the sites themselves. Neither the school, nor you as parents, can block all sites such as this, but we can continue to engage our children in discussions on safe behaviours in a digital world.

The IT department runs courses for students on cyber-safety, and offers similar courses for parents. The latter are also opportunities to discuss good practice with other parents – how much time on the Internet is reasonable, what good sites are popular, how do we manage gaming etc. Please look out for these coffee mornings, sign up, and contribute through this to helping ensure a safer community.

Please feel free to engage in further discussion with myself, Tim Wojcik, or any member of the NIS faculty.

Sincerely

Richard Swart

Grade 8 Shanty Town Experience

What is a shanty town? What are the problems faced by people who live in a shanty town? How can we experience the consequences of rural-urban migration? These were some of the questions that Grade 8 Humanities students tried to answer when they constructed their own shanty town last Thursday.

56 Grade 8 students collected recycled materials, learned how to construct a strong structure (thanks to Mr Marsh), built a dwelling in which they stayed overnight, and then went to school the following day to empathise with teenagers whose lives are similar to this every day. Noise, heat and mosquitoes proved to the biggest challenges. Well done to Grade 8. You survived, felt a little uncomfortable and learned a lot.

Grade 10 Chemistry visits Coca Cola

Last week the Grade 10 Chemistry class visited the Coca Cola Factory in Pukou as part of their Unit on Industrial Chemistry.

We were able to see the whole process from starting materials to the packaging of the product. Some of the highlights for the students were:• being able to see the whole process from the observation deck and then on the factory floor to see it more closely• the Fanta candy smell in some parts of the factory• the history museum• the hygiene safety including having our shoes shrink wrapped, the hair nets and the ‘air shower’• free Coca Cola products• canteen lunch with the workers

Special thanks to Mr. Northcott for arranging our tour of the factory.

PYP SWIM GALA

The Grade 2 - 5 Swim Gala was held Friday, June 6th. WOW! What a fun day with some close races and finishing with some exciting relays where everyone was cheering; the team spirit was fantastic and the noise from the cheering all day long was nearly deafening but great to hear. The students have worked well improving their swimming skills throughout the year and this was a great opportunity to put these into practice. It was the first year since we opened the pool that all events were swum over 25 metres. At the end of the day there were only 2 points separating the 1st & 2nd place teams and as this result will affect the overall winner of the inter-house championships that has been running all year, we will wait until the final day of school when the shield winner will be revealed. Thanks to all involved for your help on the day, without your support these events would not be possible.

Unfortunately, we were unable to give out the awards in a PYP assembly but here are the grade champions of the 2014 Swim Gala. They will all receive awards.

Race results are posted on the notice board outside my office.

Today, Friday June 13th the Pre-K to Grade One had their swim gala. Events were run in both pools and all students participated in races and novelty events. It was a fun morning for the students and parents alike.

A special thanks to Mr Clarke, our Athletic Director for all his support and assistance in running these events.

Safety First @ The Pool - Water Safety Tips

Knowing that many of our NIS community will be holidaying over summer in areas thatinvolve water activities with your children I would like to remind you all to be aware of the serious dangers of water and to be sure to supervise your children.

I have attached an informative link highlighting the dangers of water, it is a real reminder to all of us with children that you can never be too cautious in or around water when it comes to your child's safety.

I highly recommend that all parents take ten minutes to view and read this information if they are to be in or around water with their families this summer.

http://www.myfoxtwincities.com/story/25583480/investigators-drowning-is-silent#at_pco=cfd-1.0

WATER SAFETY TIPS

1. Never swim alone: Even a teenager or adult should swim with a buddy.

2. Pick a look-out: Designate an adult to be close enough to reach out and touch a child under 5 years old whenever they are in the water.

3. Don't waste time: If your child is missing, look in the pool first.

4. Keep a cell phone nearby: Every second counts when you have to call emergency, but keep it turned off or silenced while you watch swimmers in the pool.

5. If you are in a foreign country make sure that you know the emergency numbers.

Wishing you all a wonderful summer break and please remember "safety first"  in and around the water this summer.
