When I first articulated my vision for WestGen

nearly three years ago, I promised results and

positive change. I wanted to secure a long-term

However, I came to WestGen to build a future, not end it.

Our journey over the past three years has not been easy, but we’ve

Two Years and Going Strong...This August was the 2nd anniversary of Boviteq West’s creation, and we’re proud to see the company continuing to flourish as we help more and more people to understand and reap the benefits of our IVF process.

Over the past two years, we’ve seen a lot of diversity pass through our barns- we’ve collected from animals with high genomics, deep pedigrees, and globally recognized names, and even beef and dairy donors who were already pregnant. We’ve seen it all! To date, we’ve collected oocytes and created embryos from 125 different donors! The impressive diversity and quantity of the donors we’ve seen reflects the trust our customers have in the service we provide, with many customers bringing in multiple donors.

Their reasons for choosing IVF have varied as much as the donors have. Some seek the early embryo production that comes from being able to collect from animals as young as 7-8 months old, while others need a means to continue embryo production from an animal otherwise no longer able to produce offspring. Many of our customers praise the increased embryo production they benefit from, thanks to the shorter intervals required between collections. Whatever the need or reason, all of our customers agree that IVF is a business option that just makes sense.

Working with Boviteq West IVF technologies has created new opportunities for Hamming Holsteins. This comes both from the rapid production of female embryos from our emerging brood cow and 2014 BC Cow of the Year, Elmbridge Goldwyn Darling VG-88 4*, and use of their high health status recipient herd to help with the timely creation of show age calves.

HaplotypeAssociated with

Cholesterol Deficiency

HCD:

Below is a summary of a CDN Extension Article “Discovering Genetic Anomalies from Genotyping” by Brian VanDoormaal & Lynsay Beavers. For the full article,

please visit https://www.cdn.ca/articles.php.

In addition to genomic evaluations and integrity of pedigrees, accumulating thousands of genotypes for a given breed results in the discovery of new genetic anomalies. Scientists in Germany recently discovered a new “Haplotype associated with Cholesterol Deficiency” (i.e.: HCD) in Holsteins, which traces back to Maughlin Storm as the oldest genotyped sire of origin. For calves that inherited the undesirable gene from both parents, it was found that they had an increased incidence of chronic/prolonged diarrhea that was untreatable, as well as other illnesses. Examination of blood samples from affected calves showed a cholesterol deficiency that prevented the normal deposition of fat in body tissues. Over the course of months after birth, the affected calves lost all body reserves and it appears that all eventually died. Without the presence of an exact gene test to identify carriers, the current haplotype analysis can result in some animals being falsely labelled as a carrier if they have both Storm and Willowholme Mark Anthony in their pedigree.

* Dudoc Mr Burns carries the haplotype with the undesirable gene from Storm as well as the haplotype sourced through Mark Anthony. Therefore, genotyping his progeny will not lead to conclusive results about the carrier status of the undesirable gene.

The methodology used by CDN to calculate the HCD Carrier Probability values (varying from 99% for “Carrier” to 1% for “Free”), reduces this problem by combining the haplotype test with pedigree analysis. Now that this undesirable anomaly is known, an industry effort can easily be made to reduce the frequency that carrier animals are mated together, thereby lowering the frequency that homozygous calves are born and subsequently die within months. The discovery of this genetic condition also demonstrates the value and importance of producers reporting to DHI the date and reason for every animal leaving the herd, including young calves.

WESTGEN HAS TAKEN SWIFT ACTIONSINCE THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THISNEW GENETIC DISCOVERY. OUR G-MATESOFTWARE HAS BEEN UPDATED TOPREVENT THE SUGGESTED MATING OF2 SUSPECTED HCD CARRIERS.

We suggest producers follow Brian Van Doormaal’s advice: “Any negative impact of these genetic anomalies can be eliminated by avoiding the mating of carrier sires to carrier heifers and cows, which is best achieved using computerized mating programs offered by A.I.” Carrier Status is available on the Pedigree tab of a CDN.ca Animal Query page.

Thurl PlacementCanadian classifiers have been evaluating thurl placement for a number of years, but August 2015 represents the first time that Thurl Placement

has been an officially published trait. Sires producing daughters with thurls placed back are rated with a “B” while sires that are known to

produce daughters with thurls further ahead are rated with an “A” attached to their numerical score. Sires with a zero rating receive no

letter, indicating ideal Thurl Placement. Practically, producers need only select against those sires that significantly move thurls back.

As expected, Thurl Placement is highly correlated withRump Angle scores.

Meridian

Sully Heart Meridian joins the proven bull list after an illustrious career as a Genomax sire, and it’s safe to say his first crop of milking daughters don’t disappoint! Early in his career, Meridian was an interesting sire because of his high type GPA and as he was one of the early Domain (Toystory x Ronelee Outside Dabble) sons, and Domain wasn’t available for use in Canada. His maternal pedigree was also increasing in popularity as it delivered one high ranking genomic young sire after the next. His dam, Sully Planet Manitoba VG-85 is a daughter of Sully Shottle May EX-90 DOM 5*,whose notable progeny include Mayfield, McCutcheon and Meteor to name a few. Further back in this line we find Poly-Kow Lindy Mindy, the dam of Semex’s Poly-Kow Mailing, a popular Superior Type sire.

As his early daughters were born, WestGen Reps often reported on the fancy calves they saw in a variety of herds and eventually in the show ring. The Meridians were stretchy calves with a very dairy cut to them. The Meridian daughters began to calve late last year and it was quickly apparent that he also transmitted exceptional udders, with soft texture and strong attachments. Many notable breeders reported fancy fresh young 2 year olds and the Very Good classification scores started to accumulate.

Once they were a few months into lactation, the other half of the story began to emerge as producers commented on their tremendous production. Reports of many 2 year old daughters producing over 50kg a day were given by progeny analysts Carl Saucier, Jim Biggar and others. The excitement earned him the hashtag #meridianmonday, and a special Meridian daughter being featured each week leading up to proof day.

On August 11th, his initial proof was released and it included production records from nearly 500 daughters and conformation data from close to half that many. With 2868 GLPI, he landed at #18 on the list and is one of the most balanced bulls available for production, durability and functional traits. Highlights of his proof include 2006kg of Milk, 52kg of Protein, 13 for Conformation and Mammary Systems, 10 for Feet & Legs, 104 for Daughter Fertility, and 106 for Calving Ability. As his genomic index had predicted, he should be protected for Fat %. As a Repromax sire, he’s often noted for his superior settling ability. This makes him a great choice to include in your breeding program as you look for fertile bulls to settle cows this fall that were affected by summer heat stress. Having made many satisfied breeders in western Canada already, and many more daughters in the pipeline, we think the story on Meridian is just beginning.

With young Genomax additions becoming an increasingly popular choice for dairy producers, each proof round we carefully consider a host of candidates. With the August update, we have capitalized on the success of Numero Uno and Meridian, as well as the popularity of Doorman in drafting our new candidates.

Boldi ANDREFlame x Supersonic

Among the early Numero Uno sons, Vieuxsaule Flame, who never actually made it to our proof sheet, is still among the top for LPI and Pro$. His early sons are ranking very high as well. As a result we have selected one of his best for LPI and Conformation, Boldi Andre. At +3275 LPI he’s our highest rated bull and he combines it with +16 Conformation and an excellent health trait profile.

We’ve also decided to add Vieuxsaule Flame (Numero Uno x Freddie) himself to our list. He carries the same high component, high health profile as Numero Uno, and he’s also an Immunity+ bull. However he’s rated considerably higher for Calving Ability.

Ginary DODGEDiamond x Numero Uno

Ginary Dodge has been added, bringing Numero Uno’s influence via the maternal side. His sire Diamond, is a Snowman son and Dodge’s production numbers reflect

his influence on the mating, especially for milk. On the other hand, his high Herd Life

(113) and Daughter Fertility (107) ratings are clearly the influence of Numero Uno.

With +16 for Conformation, Dodge is a “trifecta” sire who is expected to deliver Production, Conformation and Longevity.

KH CINDERDOORDoorman x Iota

With the timeline for Doorman’s return to active duty unclear, we’ve added his high ranking son, KH Cinderdoor who offers impressive production (+1566kg M) and outstanding Conformation (+17). Expectbig-framed cows excelling in Dairy Strength.

Newest Genomax Additions

Page 11: BULLS EYE - Amazon S3s3.amazonaws.com/.../2017/10/17082108/bullseye-sept-2015.pdf · 2017-10-17 · BULLS EYE NEWS / IDEAS / HOT TOPICS / TRENDS Digital Bullseye articles are available

EBA GENTLEMeridian x Beacon

It seems logical to add the best Meridian sons available in support of their popular

sire. EBA Gentle provides high yields(+2336kg M) with double digit ratings for Udders (+10), Feet & Legs (+12) and Dairy

Strength (+10). His 107 Calving Ability prediction also follows the pattern of

Meridian. Another Meridian son,Oh-River-SYC Byway (Meridian x Atwood)

is the new #1 PTAT sire in the breed and will get used heavily among US Type enthusiasts as a result. At +17 his Canadian Conformation

rating is not too shabby either!

11

Gen-I-Beq AKYOL Red Brekem x Alchemy

For our red enthusiasts, this early Red Brekem son provides a nice balance of Production, Health and Type from a popular cow family.

Boldi V APTITUDEDavinci x Epic

Combining extreme LPI (3246) and Pro$ (2489) and solid Type (+12). Dam is a full sister to Airintake, a Genomax sire we promoted in 2014. Aptitude is our highest rated Immunity+ sire and a slightly different pedigree too.

Norca Silky ALONZO Mascalese x Dempsey

Now available and still tops for Conformation in Canada at +18. His 3144 LPI and 2120 Pro$ are pretty respectable too!
