Feeding and Delivery:Bulls will be fed free of charge back at Veltkamp’s bulldevelopment facility in Manhattan, Montana until April 1,2015. During that time, we will semen test and give yourbulls a Breeding Soundness Exam. If a buyer wishes tokeep their bull at Veltkamp’s after April 1st, feed beyondApril 1st and freight will be left to the buyer. We begindelivering bulls by the last week of March and early April.If you have special delivery requests, please let us knowat the time of the sale. Feed charges will be $3.00 perhead per day for those that request their bulls remain atVeltkamp’s after our delivery time. Bulls taken by thebuyer immediately after the sale will receive a $150 dis-count, but we remind you that we will not have had theopportunity to semen test bulls taken by a buyer immedi-ately after the sale, and we recommend that the buyersarrange for semen testing at their ranch prior to turnout.

The Bulls of the Big Sky delivery and feed policy is: • Buyer takes purchased bull(s) home immediately aftersale: $150 per head discount. Fertility testing is Buyer’sresponsibility.

• Buyer requests that purchased bulls(s) return toVeltkamp’s after the sale until Breeder delivery on orabout April 1: No Discount on price of bull(s) but nocharge for feed and no charge for delivery for the first300 miles, until on or about April1 Breeder delivery.

• Buyer requests that purchased bull(s) return toVeltkamp’s after the sale and remain at Veltkamp’s be-yond the Breeder delivery date on or about April 1: Nodiscount on price of bull(s) but no charge for feed up tothe Breeder delivery date on or April 1. After the Breederdelivery date on or about April 1, Buyer will pay$3.00/head/day for feed and must either pay for delivery(because Buyer requested that the purchased bull stayat Veltkamp’s beyond Breeder’s regular delivery) or pickup the purchased bull(s) himself at Veltkamp’s.

• For purchased bulls traveling beyond 300 miles prior tothe Buyer delivery date on or about April 1, the most eco-nomical trucking available will be arranged and the buyerwill receive a 300-mile credit towards the total deliverycost.

• Volume Buyer Delivery Special: Bulls of the Big Skywill make special delivery arrangements and discountsfor large volume buyers on an individual basis. Please

Retaining Semen Interest:The bull buyer will receive full possession, 100% salvagevalue, and ¾ semen interest of any bull purchased in thissale, while the individual selling ranch (“Seller”) will re-tain ¼ semen interest in any bull that it sells. Seller’s re-tained semen interest is a royalty interest that entitlesSeller to ¼ of any revenue from the sale of that bull’ssemen. Seller’s retained semen interest shall remaineven if the bull, or any interest in the bull, is later sold toa third-party; and, the Buyer shall be solely responsiblefor notifying any later third-party buyer of the Seller’s re-tained semen interest and for ensuring that Seller’s re-tained semen interest is satisfied if semen is ever sold.Seller will not be responsible for any expenses directly orindirectly related to semen collection or promotion of apurchased bull, unless the Buyer and Seller agree other-wise in writing prior to semen collection. Seller’s retainedsemen interest also includes the right of Seller to collectsemen on the purchased bull at Seller’s sole expenseand at the Buyer’s reasonable convenience.

Notice to Canadian Buyers:Bulls of the Big Sky will provide free delivery to the USside of Port of Entry at Sweetgrass, MT and pay for thecost of regular health papers. The Buyer is responsiblefor the cost of additional Canadian or Provincial HealthRequirements.

Notice to Out of State Buyers: Please know your state health requirements prior to saleday. If your state requires Trich testing, the bull(s) will notbe able to leave Montana immediately after the sale andmust return to Veltkamp’s for testing. Though Bulls of theBig Sky pays for the cost of all regular health papers, thecost of Trich testing and other state specific health re-quirements will be the responsibility of the Buyer and willbe billed to the Buyer.

Thunder is built very similar to the Lot 1 bull with great depth, width, and rib. His recip dam was alittle lighter milker and he may be playing a little catchup. He gained 3.91 for first 56 days on test. Fe-males with nice udders and small teats are on both sides of the pedigree. Superstout's dam is 11 yearsold and still being flushed. The granddam LBR Night Dream who produced Crockett in 2005 is 12years old and still is a very sound productive cow.

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDsare the most accurate and effective toolavailable for comparing genetic levels. Inusing EPDs, the difference between twosires’ EPDs represents the unit differenceexpected in the performance of their prog-eny. For example, if sires A and B haveEPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit differencewould be expected in their progeny (movingfrom -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to usingEPDs is knowing what units they are ex-pressed in. For example, if the above casereferred to weaning weight EPDs, A wouldbe expected to sire 15-pounds more weaningweight than B. If calving ease were thetrait, A would be expected to sire 15-percentmore unassisted births in first-calf heifers;in other words, if B sired 30 assists in agroup of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to re-quire 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chartis required to determine where a bull’sEPDs rank him relative to other bulls in thebreed. $ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparisonof genetic levels for many economically im-portant traits, they only provide a piece of theeconomic puzzle. That’s where $ indexescome in. Through well-conceived, rigorousmathematical computation, $ indexes blendEPDs and economics to estimate an animal’soverall impact on your bottom line. The sametechnology that led to the dramatic progressin swine, poultry and dairy genetics over thelast several decades was used to develop thefollowing $ indexes:

All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for useon the entire cow herd (bred to both Angusfirst-calf heifers and mature cows) with theportion of their daughters required to main-tain herd size retained and the remainingheifers and steers put on feed and sold gradeand yield.

Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use onmature Angus cows with all offspring put onfeed and sold grade and yield.

Using API and TI: First, determine which indexto use; if you’re keeping replacements useAPI, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zeroin on the unit difference between bulls. (Asdescribed above, index units are in dollarsper cow exposed.) The difference can be usedto determine how much a bull is worth com-pared to another. Or, put another way, howmuch you can pay for one bull compared toanother. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure abull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra$6,000 over a+50 bull if both are exposed to30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart isrequired to determine where a bull’s indexvalue ranks him relative to other bulls in thebreed.
