Un-Edited Bullsheet HI there to you all out there in Subaru land from the Shinks house, hope you’re all doing well. I was half way to work this morning, slipping past the wet lands as the sun be-hind me in the east was only just sending an orange smudge of colour into the sky expelling nights dark satin curtain when it struck me, “Bugger, it’s late in the month, Liz will be waiting for my report!” Where does time go? We are almost into April, one quarter of the year is gone, Easter is near and good lord wasn’t it just Christmas??? So here I am, tapping away on my laptop like some psychopathic pianist who can hear beautiful music in his head, as spell check, my greatest critic, shouts profanities at me to learn how to play. Speaking of how fast time flies, your committee has started to plan events for 2016, our 40th Birthday!!! We have a lot to plan, old members to find, special trips, celebratory dinners, commemorative bits and pieces. Keep an eye out for more info as it comes to hand, 2016 promises to be an exciting year. More will be revealed at the April meeting so come along to find out more. If you had not noticed the notice for the AGM is in the mag, (another hint time is marching on) and with that when the new club year starts anew and we take a new turn together. “The Bullsheet goes electronic.” That’s right, we have been talking about this for a long time now but here it comes. You will get an email to receive the mag, except for in extraordinary circumstances like not hav-ing a computer. Remember the theory to do this is to save money on printing and posting, plus the electronic format provides colour photos and even short movies. It will be a change to not hold the mag in your hands and read from a screen. I have taken to reading books on my Tablet, I slip my ear phones on and get lost reading “War of the Worlds” while my favourite tunes play in the back-ground. The Bunnings BBQ was a resounding success; there is a trip report and pics further in the mag. My personal thanks go to everyone who helped on the day, and to those who planned the event. Job well done team. I have not had a sausage since though. Anyway, I should quit before spell check turns itself off in protest at my typing mistkke, mistkate , miststakes, errors. To: S4WDCSA Thanks for sending through the link to Bullsheet on issuu.com - it's a good read. Thought I'd let you know that there will be a bunch of Victorian Suby Club members on your patch over Easter. Following our successful Simpson crossing last year, we're doing a trip to Lake Coongie via Arkaroola. There'll be 9 of us in 5 cars - 3 Foresters, an L-series towing a Cub trailer and a Rodeo Ute. Our plan is to camp at Burra on Good Friday evening, get to Arkaroola by Easter Saturday, laze about on Easter Sunday, do a tour or two, then on Easter Tuesday head north along Cop-ley Road and the Strezlecki Track to Innamincka and Lake Coongie, returning through out-back Qld/NSW via Menindee Lakes, aiming to be back in Melbourne by 27 April. Obviously if anyone's out on the road as we go past it would be good to say g'day. Any sage advice from people familiar with the roads past Blinman would also be appreciated. Hi guys We have lots of trips in the mag this month put your name on a list and just go! A very happy Easter to everyone, here's hoping the Easter bunny is generous to each and everyone of you. The trip reports are well worth a read this month lots of things have been happening out there. The Victorian Subaru club is crossing the border read below for info on this rare event. The school holidays will soon be upon us and don't we all look forward to the luxury or fewer cars on the roads, the travel into work is bliss at these times. As of July the bullsheet will only be available on the web and via email please make sure we have your web/email details the savings to the club will be immense and you can see our illustrious mag in full colour. Port Augusta Day Trip

region with the Shinks family.
Waterfall Gully Youth in need charity walk
Date: Sunday 4th May. Depart from Waterfall Gully between 8.00-9.30am and complete the return trip at your leisure.
Details: Our welcome point will be open for you to collect your t-shirt and begin your journey, which is a deviation from the normal route.
From here, enjoy the beautiful surroundings and develop your appetite for a well deserved sausage sizzle upon your return.
As parking at Waterfall Gully is extremely limited, a free shuttle service
will operate from 7.40am throughout the duration of the event from the corner of Waterfall Gully Road and Waterfall Terrace (refer to map).
Cost: $35 includes a t-shirt, inclusion on our ‘honour roll’, plenty of water along the
way and a sausage sizzle upon return. Groups of 10 are $300 ($30 each). Children under 15 are free. All proceeds go towards helping

Peake
Friday 6th – Monday 9th June 2014 (June Long Weekend) Trip Leader – Paul Ewins Contact – 0457569868 Degree of Difficulty – Easy/Medium/Hard – Take at your own pace. UHF Channel 10 All bikes, quads and buggies MUST have flags and radios This is the Club’s Annual Peake Trip. Peake is a property located approximately 50km from Tailem Bend consisting of sand dunes and rocks. Camping is completely self sufficient. A UHF radio is really a must. If you do not have one, you can borrow one from the club. Beginners and visitors are most welcome. It is a good introduction to sand driving and can be a good learning curve!
Mount Remarkable National Park (Mambray Creek) Working Bee

This trip is limited to 10 cars only
If you go up on Friday we stay at a group camp called Native Pines near the
Park entrance. This site has plenty of room for swags, has fire pits and toilets
nearby with cold showers. There are no fees.
On Saturday, we drive into the park proper to clear fire trails and poison
weeds until we go and set up camp and start happy hour until late.
There will be lots of walking and work, so you must bring sturdy walking
boots and bring your favourite strong work gloves if you have those. You will
need a quick prep lunch. We will be with the cars all day. You must be self
sufficient Saturday night, there are no facilities out there. You can purchase
firewood at the park for about $10. Make sure you have enough for Saturday
night. It gets very cold up on the hill and it snowed in 2001!

Dutchman’s Stern Conservation Park
Working Bee

Degree of Difficulty Moderate – Some sections of the track can be
challenging on the Sunday Drive – but good fun!
This trip is limited to 10 cars only
Lots of walking and work, so sturdy walking boots are a must. If
you have a favourite pair of sturdy working gloves, please bring
them. We will be working on weeding clearing of box thorn and
wheel cactus in particular. There is no need to bring any tools as
we have our own. There is accommodation available in shared
rooms, but you must bring your own bedding. The Old Homestead
also has a fridge, gas stove, microwave over, hot showers and NO
FEES.
This is a Family Friendly Trip. On Saturday we usually work very
hard and then retire to have a very sociable happy hour until late.
As we will be doing a lot of walking, you will need to have a
packed lunch to take with you in the car. On Sunday we will do a
bit more work and then drive out to the very scenic World’s End
which is a fantastic drive which can be a challenging but fun drive
for the smaller vehicles.

Weed clearing, beach cleaning, may be more work. No need to
bring tools, we have our own. We also have gloves, but if you have
a favourite pair, please bring those. BRING FIREWOOD.

Limestone Coast Trip
Sept/Oct 2014 – Dates to be confirmed - dates and final details to be posted in the July edition of the Bullsheet. Trip Leaders – Paul Ewins and Grace Gent Contact – 0457569868 or 0433792474 Duration – 5 days Cost - Camping fees are likely to be $10 - $15 per car per night. To be confirmed. Degree of Difficulty - Degree of difficulty is going to vary – Day 3 will be likely to be the most challenging. Please note there will be a limit of 10 cars on this trip. The plan at this stage will be to meet 10am at Tailem Bend Servo. From there we will travel down to either Little Dip Conservation Park (Robe) or Canunda National Park (Millicent) to bush camp with both sites being camper trailer and caravan friendly. This trip will be very laid back; while there will be something on everyday there will be no obligation to be involved. Day 1 Travel to camp Day 2 will see us explore the lower parts of Canunda National Park (Millicent to Beachport) Day 3 will see us explore Beachport National Park and Little Dip National Park, starting at Beachport and finishing at Robe. This will be the biggest driving day of the 3 days – most likely to run from 9.00am to 5.30pm Day 4 will see us explore the top part of Canunda National Park starting at Millicent and fin-ishing at Mt Gambier. We can also take the opportunity to explore Mount Gambier for any-one that is interested. Day 5 Travel home.
All cars MUST have the following: • Snatch Strap and rated shackles • Shovel • Sand Flag • UHF radio either in car or hand held • Tyre Gauge • Air Compressor Please call Paul Ewins or Grace Gent if you have any questions.

The day started early and after collecting the bread from Woolies I headed off to Bunnings to set up the BBQ for our big fund-raising day. When I arrived, the gear was all waiting for us so I started to set up what I could while I waited for the others to arrive, only to find out that there were new rules and we would have to work within a limited space and would also have a cake stall next to us. Paul Shinks had arrived after collecting the sausages and we started to rearrange our space and unload as much as we could from our cars. Bruce McLean arrived after a short tour of the inner western suburbs and with Werner and Sharyn helping we were soon under way. Bruce and Gloria arrived with the onions and we got ready for the onslaught.
Customers were already asking if there were any sausages ready as soon as they had hit the hot plate.
As it was a much cooler day than our last effort we were hop-ing for big things. It didn’t take long and we started off with quite a good turnover. Not flat out, but consistent. A couple of quick trips to the supermarket to top up some supplies and we were off.
Jacky took a couple of our sausages to Helen at Ashford Hos-pital so that she wouldn’t feel left out of the day’s activities despite her broken ankle. We missed her at the BBQ but were soon too busy to think about anything but sausages and onions.
As the day wore on we just got busier and busier. Jodie and Kyra were on for the lunch rush and had it all running like a well oiled machine and by mid afternoon we were off to the supermarket again for more bread and mustard to see us through.
As the day came to a close and we started to wind down and begin the cleanup we still had people asking if there were any sau-sages left – we could have been serving until dark if Bunnings had not wanted everything packed up on time. It was just as well as we were all a bit worn out by then anyway.
We had a very successful day and also sold a heap more raf-fle tickets for the Engel ridge/freezer as well.
We raised almost $2000.00. A HUGE thanks to all the helpers on the day – Debbie, Paul,
Bruce, Werner & Sharyn, Bruce & Gloria, Richard, Robin & Jacky, Neville, Jodie, Kyra, Leo, Charlie & Helen – we could not have done it without you.

Clare trip report
March 2014 long weekend. We arrived at the caravan park at approx. 10.30 on the Saturday morning. The reception ex-plained vaguely where rest of club was set up. We drove to back of the park to find two su-baru’s, one with a trailer tent and one with a caravan, but nobody home. Assumed that the others were out on bikes, or not arrived yet, so we started to decide where to best position the car and tent. Debbie called to say they had gone to market across road and would be walking back in couple of minutes, so we waited before starting to unpack. Debbie and Helen came back from markets with some local produce and home made biscuits. Nobody else was expected, it was just four of us camping, Debbie, Helen, Jacky and myself. We had our bikes, but Debbie and Helen don’t have bikes. We put our tent where we might get some afternoon shade, but not close to any tree branches. While setting up, Debbie and Helen made coffee and distracted us with food. After lunch Debbie suggested walking to local Caltex where they had some hire bikes, but also some other devices that looked like more fun. Jacky and I rode our bikes, while Debbie and Helen walked. At the service station you can hire pedal go-carts that could take up to four adults. These looked like fun and we sat on a few for photos and contacted to owner to sug-gest we would be back 9am next morning to hire one with the four of us. Debbie and Helen walked back to caravan park while Jacky and I took bikes along the Riesling trail to get an idea of the incline and distances to wineries. By the time we got back, it was time for swim and cool off, while Debbie and Helen went shopping. Pre-dinner nibbles was shared with pre-dinner drinks. Then meal and lots of talking and some more drinking. Overnight it got quite cold and we probably didn’t have quite enough blankets. Didn’t think about using the picnic rug in the back of the car. Up at 8am for more talking, till someone checked time and realised it was 8.45 and nobody had eaten breakfast or gotten ready for our go-cart hire, so bit of a rush to get to hire place. We tried a few different go-carts before deciding which would be most fun and had some more pictures before setting off. The owner had suggested we would need to push over the steep sections, but would be mostly fine. To get to start of Riesling trail was just down a side street with slight dip down to a bridge, then up other side to start of trail. On the way down, mostly keeping brake on, then near bottom we decided to let brake off to coast down and not have to push so much after bridge. The go-cart picked up speed a little more than expected and became a little harder to control as we got to bottom of road and as we started going up a bit we stopped. Helen said she thought she broke her ankle. We all looked and decided she was right, it was not looking good. Helen said her foot had gotten caught under the pedal and her pulled her shoe part off and twisted it around somehow. Debbie called for ambulance, while I went back to talk to the owner of the go cart to explain. The owner came to keep us company while we waited for ambulance.

Debbie and Helen went for a nice ride in ambulance, while Jacky and I helped owner get his go-cart back and collect Helen’s car to meet them at hospital. We actually arrived at same time as the ambulance, so guess they had tried to continue on the scenic tour. At Clare hospital, they looked at the leg and agreed it looked broken, but they took an X-ray anyway and put on a temporary cast. They suggested she should go by private car back to Ashford hospital, rather than wait for Ambulance. Lots of discussion about how to get her caravan back to Adelaide, but Helen decided to try to get her brother to help, since he was more familiar with the caravan. Jacky and I went back to camp to start packing up Helen’s site while Debbie waited for Helen. When Debbie and Helen returned, Helen stayed in the car while giving instructions about her camping equipment, Debbie also packed up, deciding if she drove Helen down to Adelaide, she wasn’t going to want to come back to Clare same day. Helen’s brother and his wife turned up to finish packing up caravan. Debbie and Helen set off for Ashford. Helen’s brother took off with Helen’s caravan and we decided not to stay on by ourselves, so we decided to pack up also and return home a day earlier. Helen stayed on at Ashford hospital for next two weeks. Her leg was manipulated to re-turn bones to normal position. Another x-ray decided she would not need an operation and she now has a walking frame and knee trolley to help her get around until the ankle heals properly. It will be at least 8 weeks before she can put weig

Ready Steady Go After work Monday evening David went through their camping gear to sort out what they would need for the trip to Rawnsley Park. The tent hadn’t been used in quite a few years and David thought about the last time they had used it. His memory went back to when Michael and Jade were quite young, and a smile spread across his face as he remembered fondly memorable events which happened on that trip. “What are doing Dad” a familiar soft voice said behind him. David turn around to find Jade standing behind him. “I’m just going through our camping gear and trying to work out what we have and what we are going to need” David answered “I don’t want to go, can I stay with Aunty Helen instead” she asked, anxious about the reac-tion she would get from her Dad. “Oh sweetheart, I was just thinking about the last time we went camping, you would have been six or seven. We had so much fun on that trip, and you kept asking when we could do it again, and now we are, you don’t want to come” David reflected. ‘Yeah, but that wasn’t with a bunch of people I didn’t know” Jade pouted. “Well maybe if you give them a chance and make an effort to get to know them you might find they are actually a fun bunch of people to go camping with” David replied “It’s not fair” Jade sulked “No, what’s not fair is you not trying. Bring your iPod, bring a couple of books, you like reading, sit in the car and alienate yourself from the rest of us, I don’t care, but you are com-ing and I don’t want to hear any more about it.” David clarified starting to get annoyed with her. Jade turn and stormed out of the shed, David returned to examining all their camping gear frustrated at his daughters negative feelings toward doing something exciting and new. David was a plumber and the following day had gone into the local hardware shop to buy some fittings when he ran into Jack buying a few things for the council. “Howdy Jack, what are you doing here” David asked brightly “G’day David, the irrigation line at Honey Bee park has burst and I have to fix it, what about you” Jack answered. “I’m working on old man Davies place. The hot water service has a couple of leaking fittings, I tried to convince him to buy a new hot water unit, but he reckons the one he’s got will out-last him” David replied with a smile. “That old bugger won’t die, he’s as hard as nails, I mean he’s got to be in his late eighties I recon” Jack countered with a chuckle “Yeah I recon you’re right” David replied. “Hey while I’ve got you” David continued, “what essential things do we need for this trip to Rawnsley Park”. Jack thought about it for a few seconds then replied, “have you got your basic camping gear, you know, tent, mattresses, sleeping bags, fridge or esky. You won’t need a lot, John and any other club member will have recovery gear and most other things you may require. Do you have a fire extinguisher in your car, every car has to have an extinguisher” Jack informed David. “No but I have one in the work van I can put in the car for the trip”

Jack had a quizzical expression then continued, “ that will be fine for this trip, but you really need one in both cars.” Jack thought for a moment longer then said, “nope I think as long as you have all you need for a comfortable camping trip, the members going on the trip will help you out with anything else you will need” “That’s great, I am really looking forward to it” David replied, “now I best get these things and get back to old man Davies. Thanks for the chat” Both men parted ways. The trip to Rawnsley Park was during the school holidays and the October long weekend was in the middle of the holidays. David and Sarah had discussed going to Rawnsley Park with the group, then staying an extra couple of days to look around Wilpena Pound. The trip was now only a week away, Jade and Michael had started the school holidays. David cleaned the trailer, laid a tarp on the bottom with enough over hang over the A frame to pull back over their camping gear. David packed the trailer with the tent, fold away chairs and fold up card table at the front of the trailer to hold down the tarp. Sarah mapped out a menu for every meal and other than fresh or frozen food, bought things they needed, then packed the cans and dry food into boxes she’d brought back from the supermarket. They didn’t have a camping fridge so all the frozen items and fresh food had to be left until last to be packed into their big esky. Sarah gave Michael and Jade large sports bags and told them to pack their clothes and toiletries, and David and Sarah shared an old suit case. The night before David finished packing the trailer, all that remained was their bags of clothes and the big esky to be put in the back of the car just before they left the next morning. The meeting place was at the old hall, and they had to be there by 9.00 am so they could be on the road after every one checked in, by 9.30. The look on Jades face told it all, she had hardly spoken to anyone the last few days, and today she sat in the back of the car brooding listening to her iPod with a dark depressed look. David, Sarah and Michael got out of the car and met up with the others that had arrived a little early. “We’re just waiting on Pete and Sue” Jack told them as they approached, then turning and indicating to a woman, “have you met my wife Dawn, this is David, Sarah and, sorry I have forgotten your name” “Michael” Michael replied. “Yes, Michael, sorry about that” Jack responded a little embarrassed, “and where is the fiery red headed lass”. “She’s sulking in the car” Sarah answered “she’ll get over herself and join in later, it will just take her some time” “That’s fine, we all do things at our own pace” Dawn replied kindly “I’m just going to walk over to the servo and grab a bag of ice, does anyone want anything” David asked No one did so David bought some ice and packed the esky with as much ice as possible. David closed the tail gate and turned around to find Jack wandering over with a couple of hand held two way radio’s in his hands which he handed to David. ”You’ll need this to keep in contact with us as we’re travelling, turn it off when you don’t need it to save the battery and they should last all weekend” “Thanks” David was surprised to receive them. “If you decide to join the club you’ll have to get one hard wired in your car or buy a hand held, but hard wired is better” Jack continued. Pete and Sue arrived and before long they were all on their way to Rawnsley Park. David, Sarah, Mi-chael and Jade were surprised at the banter and chat on the two way. It took Sarah a little while to get use to talking on the two-way but once she did she really enjoyed the communication and companion-ship. Michael tried to take the two-way from his mother but she wouldn’t have it, and even Jade was intrigued by it all…..

Did you know that it is in the club constitution that your car must be maintained in good roadworthy condition with a minimum of 3rd party property insurance? Do you have a fire extinguisher with you on club trips? It’s a club rule that you carry
one. What about a first aid kit, the club has quite a good one to borrow at any time. All we ask is that you replace anything that gets used or removed from the kit.
