Lesson 32: In My Opinion, My Peers… (survey handout) I hope you have enjoyed our study on

bullying. It is important to assess where we are in our willingness to be active participants in preventing and stopping bullying in our school. I have a survey I think will help us do that.

Do not write your name on the worksheet. We will discuss your responses but I will collect them in a few minutes.

Lesson 35: Review and Application Lets revisit what we have learned about

bullying and being an empowered bystander. I’m going to read bullying situations and ask a few questions about them.

Scenario # 1 As Sara (who is obese and slow) walks

up the steps, Justin who is in a hurry, screams – “Sara, you’re such a fat cow, hurry up!” Two students with Justin say, “That’s right, you’re such a cow” and moo at Sara. All the students who are listening, laugh. Other students try to ignore what is happening and don’t say or do anything.

Is Sara bullied? Probably, it is obvious they intended to

hurt Sara. However, according to the definition of bullying we need to know the answer to the following questions:

Did they hurt Sara? Is she a repeated target? Do the students have power over Sara?

Is Justin a student who bullies? Probably, but we need to know if he

intended to hurt and to have power and control over Sara. What Justin said is inappropriate and he should be punished.

What type of bullying did Sara receive, physical, verbal, or social

Verbal

What type of bystanders are the two students who joined in on the bullying?

The bully’s helpers

What type of bystanders are the students who laughed

They could be the bully’s helpers or encouragers

What type of bystander are the students who ignored what was happening?

Ignorers

Scenario # 2 During lunch, Betty, who is a new student,

walks over to a table of females who are eating and who seem to be enjoying each others company. As Betty sits down, Alisa slides over to take up two seats. Betty tries to sit down again, but Stephanie another student, laughs and slides over and will not let her sit down. Then Annette, who is Stephanie’s friend, looks up at Betty and says, “Can’t you tell that you aren’t wanted here.” Linda, who is watching invites Betty to sit with her.

Is Betty being bullied Probably, it is obvious they intended to

hurt Betty. However according to the definition of bullying we also need to know the answer to the following questions:

Did they hurt Betty? Is she a repeated target? Do the students seem to have power

over Betty?

Are Alisa, Stephanie and Annette Bullies? Probably, it is obvious they intended to

hurt Betty and have power and control over her.

Their behavior is inappropriate and should be punished.

What type of bullying did Betty receive- physical, verbal or social?

Social and Verbal

What type of bystander was Stephanie who also would not let Betty sit down?

Bully’s Helper or Encourager

What type of bystander was Annette who made a hateful comment?

She could be the Bully’s Helper

What type of bystander was Linda?

Victims Helper
