Bullying occurs in a context where there is a real or perceived power imbalance. It is repeated, persistent and aggressive behaviour intended to cause fear, distress and/or harm to another person’s body, feelings, self-esteem or reputation.

What is bullying?

Bullying can happen anywhere.It is not a normal part of growing up.

It can cause serious and lasting harm.

PHYSICAL BULLYING:

hitting, shoving, stealing or damaging property, spitting, and other intimidating behaviours

What is WITS?

WITS represents strategies you can use when you are bothered, annoyed, or bullied by someone else.

W.I.T.S.

Tell the person who is bullying you to stop, if you feel safe doing so.

Get support: Try opening up to the people you trust, talk to your friends, your parents, or your teacher.

Report it: Reporting bullying is not tattle-talling, it’s self-protection.

What should I do if I’m being bullied?

In most cases, bullying takes place in front of others. Bystanders often avoid getting involved because they are afraid of becoming a target themselves or making the situation worse. Standing up almost always stops bullying behaviour.

What about the bystander?

• Assertively and respectfully tell the child who is bullying to stop

• Give support to the child who is victimized

Bystanders, you can help stop bullying!

Fact: Bullying is not “normal” or socially acceptable behaviour. We give bullies power by our acceptance of this behaviour.
