Laura Westercamp sings a tune with a blues band while touring the National Blues Museum in

St. Louis. The DCHS Jazz Bands had the honor of playing in the practically brand new museum while on a field trip to St. Louis.

Mason Mietzner draws his bow back and aims for the target in his P.E. class. Mr. Nelson’s P.E. classes started their archery

unit this past week and it is safe to say that it is a student

favorite every year.

This Week In His-tory:

The first Mardi Gras was celebrated this

week in 1856! It is an important

celebration to the Catholic faith and

includes Fat Tuesday and Ash Wednesday.

Another Carnival celebration is held in Rio de Janeiro. These celebrations are full of dancing, eating,

extravagant clothing, and preceeds the reli-gious season of Lent.

The Show Must Go Onby Caitlin Paddock

At the end of January, the drama department was faced with the challenge of having their spring musical cancelled. With only a month until the weekend they had reserved the theatre for, they had a decision to make: give up and not put on a produc-tion, or put a show together in a month. In true theatre dedication, they chose the latter. The high school drama department will be putting on Playfest, a combination of short plays by multiple different playwrights, on March 3rd and 4th. Plays range from 2 to 10 actors and are around 10 minutes long. Many students are in more than one play, making this a true challenge to produce in one month. Some students even acted as more than just an actor, but as playwright as well. Sopho-more Mitchell Boyd and Junior Savanah Summers co-wrote one of the plays in the Playfest entitled “Love and Order”. A par-ody combination of both “Law and Order” and “Romeo and Juliet”, the play was written and put on entirely by students of the drama department. “Actually seeing it come to life is pretty cool,” said writer Boyd when asked how it feels to see his creation on stage, “I’ve written short stories and poems before, but only showed them to a few people. But to write this short play with Savanah and actually have the opportunity to perform it is amazing. I can’t wait to hear the reviews and what the people of the community think of ‘Love and Order.’” Both Boyd and Summers are actors in their play as well, helping bring their creation to life. Writing this in such a short period of time and being able to pull it off is an impressive feat of creativity and dedication. Bravo Boyd and Summers! Of course, as fate would have it, there were more obstacles under the surface of putting on a production in such little time. Not only did people have to find multiple short plays, but they had to find ones with good content that challenged and excited them. Then came contacting authors, run-throughs, and messy practices. With Individual Speech season taking up time and brainpower to memorize pieces, the struggle-bus was at full capacity. Laden with homework, practices, and school trips, all of the cast has made it to the week of production and they are ready to show the community what they are capable of.We hope you attend the DCHS Playfest and see what our drama department has to offer. Not only is it promised to be a night of laughs, tears, and everything in-between, but it will be a memorable example of what it means to be a Mustang here at DCHS. When we are faced with obstacles, we hurdle over them with a smile on our faces and are ready to do it again.

A Musical That Mattersby Brittney Rysdam

La La Land is a 2016 film written and directed by Damien Chazelle. It is centered around a jazz pianist and aspiring actress who fall in love in Los Angeles. It is set in present-day, but is filmed in the style of a 1920’s musical. So far this award season the film has won all of its seven nominations at the Golden Globe Awards (a record-breaking seven wins) and won eight of its twelve nominations at the Critics’ Choice Awards. At the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Emma Stone won outstanding performance by a female actor in a leading role. La La Land earned fourteen nominations at the Academy Awards and tied for most nominations with Titanic. Of those nominations, the film won oscars for Best Director, Best Actress (Emma Stone), Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Original Song (“City of Stars”) and Best Production Design. At the Oscars, it was announced that La La Land won Best Picture, but it actually lost to Moonlight. Shoutout to Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty for the messup. For anyone who has seen La La Land, it is obvious why the film won all of the awards mentioned above. I saw the movie at the Iowa Theatre on my birthday. The film immediately made a positive impression on me. This may be due to the fact that I am an avid lover of musicals, though. The movie had beautiful music that immediately gave the audience a feeling of peace and tranquility. The main characters meet in a traffic jam which results in Sebastian greeting Mia with an obscene hand gesture. By the end of the film, these two have helped each other realize their full potential and achieve their dreams. Although, the ending wasn’t what I would have liked and I ended up crying, I would still recommend that you go see it. It shows audiences that your dreams are worth achieving, even if they aren’t achieved in the way you had planned.

Ask Brus - So, Prom?by Jordan Lough

We all know Mr. Brus has distinct opinions on how things should be, even if it isn’t the most positive perspective. As prom season is getting closer, I decided to ask him a few questions on what he thought about prom and the expectations that go with it. Mr. Brus believes that prom is a BIG WASTE OF MONEY. He said, “I never went to prom and I turned out normal!” He believes when asking someone to be your prom date it is okay to be nervous, but a more over the top proposal is better. When asking someone to be your prom date, make sure if you want to dance the whole night, they do too. If you don’t share the same ideas on this, it can cause some awkward situations. It is important that when deciding what you are going to wear, you and your date do not clash. Definitely match the dress to the tux. Mr. Brus also commented on who should pay for what: “I am very frivolous. I believe that the girl should pay for dinner. Guys pay the other 364 days of the year, why shouldn’t girls pay this one night?” In true Brus fashion, he added in “It is a woman’s world and we are just living in it.” The last thing he wanted to tell students was “Go crazy and have fun!” Take what you will from our beloved Social Studies teacher, but we definitely recommend having fun on prom as well. Although Mr. Brus may not have the best advice, it’s always great that he’s willing to give it out. On behalf of the the yearbook staff, we hope you have a safe and fun prom! Make the best of it!
