Europe’s Fearsome Foursome in Turf... Europe had a five-race winning streak in the GI JohnDeere Turf snapped last year by the unheralded BetterTalk Now (Talkin Man), but put forth an excellent teamin racing’s version of the Ryder Cup. Motivator (GB)(Montjeu {Ire}), five-length winner of the G1 EpsomDerby over the 12-furlong distance of the Turf, wasupset by Classic contender Oratorio (Ire) (Danehill) inthe G1 Coral Eclipse S. and in the G1 Irish Champion S.and was most recently fifth in the G1 Prix de l’Arc deTriomphe Oct. 2. The Niarchos Family’s Bago (Fr)(Nashwan) was third in his title defense at Longchampand has had a consistent, if not spectacular season. His lone win in five starts came in his seasonal bow in theG1 Prix Ganay in April. Azamour (Ire) (Night Shift) maybe the most formidable of the quartet. The Aga Khanhomebred posted a 1 1/2-length victory over Ace (Ire)(Danehill) in the G1 Prince of Wales’s S. in June fol-lowed by a 1 1/4-length success in the G1 King GeorgeVI and Queen Elizabeth II Diamond S. in July. The baywas most recently fifth as the favorite in the IrishChampion at Leopardstown Sept. 10.

His arch rivalHenny Hughes (Hennessy) is back for another crack, while GII Del Mar Futurity hero Stevie Wonderboy (Ste-phen Got Even) will try to overcome a lengthy layoff inhis first start beyond seven furlongs. Leroidesanimaux(Brz) (Candy Stripes) has not lost a race since January2004 and looks for his ninth consecutive score in atough renewal of the Mile. He will likely have to dealwith Starcraft (NZ) as well as Artie Schiller (El Prado{Ire}), who had his spotless Belmont record erased byFunfair (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}) in the GII Kelso Breeders’Cup H. Oct. 2.

NYRA TO CONSOLIDATE DOWNSTATETRACKS? In a sit-down chat with the editorial boardof the Saratogian newspaper, New York Racing Associ-ation President Charles Heyward suggested that racingin the New York metropolitan area could take placeexclusively at Belmont Park while nearby AqueductRacetrack could be converted into a gaming facility. Areported 4,500 video lottery terminals (VLTs) are ex-pected to be installed at the Ozone Park oval next yearand could generate as much as $662 million for NYRA,the paper reported. NYRA, which has lost $38 millionover the last two years, could be forced into bank-ruptcy and might have to cease racing in early 2006without an influx of capital. The association also facesthe renewal of its franchise at the end of 2007.Heyward believes the land around Aqueduct can bebetter utilized. “Put a luxury hotel there,” Heyward toldthe Saratogian’s editorial board. “Let somebody buildand develop that. You don’t need two tracks.”Heyward added that he would advocate the installationof an all-weather surface at Belmont to accommodatewinter racing.

MONTJEU COLT TOPS FINAL SESSION Montjeu(Ire) has been hot all year and it was one of his offer-ings who topped the final session of AgenceFrançaise’s Deauville October Yearling Sale yesterday.Consigned by Haras de la Haie Neuve, hip 388, a coltfrom the family of champion Alywow and Century City(Ire), was secured by Freddie Head for i80,000. De-spite having only two yearlings catalogued, Rock ofGibraltar (Ire) has made his presence felt. After a fillyfrom his first crop reached i80,000 on day two, it wasone of his sons who was in demand yesterday. FromHaras de Fresnay-le-Buffard, hip 385 is a half brother tothe G1 Prix Ganay third Sensible (Fr) from the family ofFlying Spur (Aus) and Encosta de Lago (Aus). He wasknocked down to Jozef Rosina for i65,000. The top-priced filly of the session came just two lots in whenNicolas Clement paid i62,000 for Haras du Cadran’ship 322, a daughter of Verglas (Ire) from a family in-cluding the Group 1 winners Riverqueen (Fr), Rouvres(Fr) and Altieri (GB). Despite no three-figure prices inevidence this year, the third day saw a reversal of for-tunes and figures were slightly up overall, giving thesales company some consolation for a disappointingAugust Yearling Sale.
