Bundaberg In Voice Singers and Musicians
Emerging Musical Directors, Directors and Producers As part of this year’s Crush Festival, The Bundaberg Players, in partnership with Creative Regions and WIV Presents will present ‘Bundaberg in Voice'. 'Bundaberg in Voice' will be a unique cabaret-‐style production featuring local singers singing the music they love, delivered with their own theatrical interpretation. It will be an opportunity for the singers and musicians of Bundaberg to work with an award-‐winning producing and creative team to develop a short cabaret idea or concept -‐ one that speaks with their own voice – for inclusion in a unique musical and theatrical celebration. The creative lead team is:
• Creative Producer -‐ Annie Peterson, founder of Brisbane’s iconic 'Women in Voice' series • Director -‐ Lewis Jones, director with over fifty productions to his credit, and • Musical Director – Emma Dean, renowned singer, performer, songwriter and recording artist.
In addition, 'Bundaberg in Voice' will be an opportunity for three locals to be mentored in the key roles of Creative Producer, Director and Musical Director during the development, rehearsal and presentation of the production. 'Bundaberg in Voice' is based on the successful 'Women in Voice' model that has been part of the Brisbane music and theatre landscape for nearly twenty-‐five years, however, this production is open to both women and men. While the production will feature each artist individually, the show is developed as a collective collaboration. Key features will be:
• singers provide backing vocals for other artists where appropriate • one singer acting as an MC but also presenting their own songs, and • up to three ensemble numbers, including a finale and an encore.
Each segment of the production will last between 15 and 20 minutes. There is no set ‘recipe’ for making the show. It will be created out of the ‘ingredients’ we find and developed to present the audience with a ‘menu’ that offers a variety of experiences, some familiar and some new. What are we looking for? 'Bundaberg in Voice' is about creating something that is uniquely yours. So unlike auditions where you are asking the creative team what they want you to do, we will be asking you to tell us what you want to do, what ideas you want to explore and develop! We want to hear about ideas where you perform with ‘your own voice’ and, in doing so, make a unique connection with an audience. There might be a standalone set of songs by a particular artist or composer you have always wanted to present. There may be original songs – think Kate Miller-‐Heidke and Tim Minchin! There may be quirky covers – think ‘The Kransky Sisters’. There might be any number of theatrical ideas which bring a new dimension to terrific songs. But whatever it is, it is definitely a whole lot more than just another cabaret show. To participate as a Singer, here is what you need to do.
Fill in the attached form and email to Creative Regions at [email protected] by Monday 20 June 5pm. The form is deliberately open-‐ended. Just let us know who you are and where we can contact you, a bit about your experience [50 words or less] and 100 to 150 words about your idea. If you have a few ideas, we’d love to hear about your best two! Confirm your availability to attend an audition and chat about your idea on Saturday 2nd July and also be available on Sunday 3rd July, either for a callback or the workshopping of the show if you are chosen as a participating singer. Confirm that you will be available for rehearsals on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 October, in preparation for performances on Thursday 13, Friday 14 and Saturday 15. It is anticipated there will also be evening rehearsals in the days leading up to the performances. We will be meeting with folk interested in singing in 'Bundaberg in Voice' on Saturday 2nd July and this will be your opportunity to give us a clearer picture of your concept is all about. We will definitely want to hear you sing and it is a good idea to prepare two contrasting songs, but the rest is up to you. You can perform some of the text you think might be in your show or sketch an outline of what your ‘set’ will look like, sound like, feel like for the audience. To be considered for one of the Mentee positions, working with the Creative Producer, Director or Musical Director, here is what you need to do. Complete the Expression of Interest Form, where you will be asked to tell us a bit about yourself, between 50 to 100 words, and how you believe the mentorship will benefit you as a contributor to your performing arts community; both locally and possibly further afield, up to 150 words. Submit the form by email to [email protected] by Monday 20 May. You will need to confirm your availability for the key dates – auditions, workshops, rehearsals and performances. You need to be aware that the development of this project will take place over approximately five months and there will be demands on your time as you work with the local artists to move the show towards the performances. Your mentors will be supporting you online as well as visiting a number of times during the development and rehearsal period. This event is part of the Crush Festival, a Bundaberg Regional Council event supporting regional arts along with funding
partner Tourism and Events Queensland. ‘ Bundaberg in Voice’ is funded by the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF). RADF is a Queensland
Government through Arts Queensland and Bundaberg Regional Council partnership to support local arts and culture.
