Big Idea: Personal Calculations Multiplication

Enduring Understandings Essential Questions

Multiplication is repeated addition.

Patterns can be recognized all around us.

An array is a series of rows and colums used to represent multiplication.

How can addition be used to help understand multiplication? Where do we find patterns in the real world? How is multiplication applied to real-world situations?

Bundle Performance Task(s) Your students are planning a class t-shirt. After calling several local print shops, your class has narrowed the decision to three different shops: Frank’s T-Shirt Designs, Sandy’s Shirts, and Tommy’s Tees. The cost of the shirts is similar at each store: Frank’s-$9, Sandy’s-$7, and Tommy’s-$8. Tommy’s charges a $30 design fee. Sandy charges $1 per shirt for a design fee. Frank charges no design fee. Using the table provided, the students must find the following information:

The cost of the shirts at each location according to the number of students in your class.

The total cost for the order (shirts and design fee) at each location.

Which location the class should choose to purchase the shirts including a detailed written explanation as to why.

As an extension: For larger orders, each location offers discounted prices. The class has decided to offer parents the opportunity to order a shirt also. For each 50 shirts, each location gives a 50¢ discount per shirt. Calculate the cost of the shirts for the class at each location if the order is for 50 shirts. Then do the same if the class orders 100 shirts.
