Fatal crash draws guilty pleaSarah PayneBlack Press

A young Burnaby man has pleaded guilty to three charges in connection with a horrific crash that killed a 16-year-old girl in Belcarra more than four years ago.

On the evening of Sept. 2, 2010, Christopher Baires was driving with Melissa Tomac and two other friends after a day at White Pine Beach in Belcarra Regional Park.

Baires tried to overtake another car on a blind corner of Bedwell Bay Road when he lost control, crashing into a tree.

All four occupants were taken to Royal Columbian Hospital, where Tomac, a Burnaby teen, died four hours later of her injuries.

On Friday in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster, Baires pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm. He was originally charged with nine offences, including impaired and dangerous driving.

Baires’ next court appearance will be March 31, 2015 for a sentencing hearing.

City to ask BC Court of Appeal to reconsider earlier decisionWanda [email protected]

The City of Burnaby wants a decision from the courts, but so far no court is willing to give one.

The Federal Court of Appeal has turned down the City of Burnaby’s request to appeal the National Energy Board decision which allowed Kinder Morgan to ignore

city bylaws while doing study work on Burnaby Mountain.

Burnaby argued the NEB does not have the authority to decide for itself the constitutional issue of whether it can override municipal bylaws.

But the federal appeal court won’t allow the appeal to go ahead, and they don’t have to give a reason, “so they didn’t,” said

Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan. This follows a decision last

month in which the B.C. Court of Appeal would not hear the appeal, despite deeming it an important issue, because the judges believed the proper venue was the federal appeal

court. “The B.C. Court of Appeal gave

reasons when they refused and the

federal court didn’t because I don’t know how they would explain it,” Corrigan said.

“So you’ve got the courts pointing fingers at each other and unfortunately we’re caught in the middle with no one wanting to hear our case.”

Burnaby’s lawyer has taken its hot potato of a case back to the B.C. Court of Appeal asking them to reconsider their earlier decision, he added.

Burnaby board elects new chair

The Burnaby school board has a new chair following its inaugural meeting held at Burnaby Central secondary recently.

Longtime trustee Ron Burton was nominated and acclaimed as chair, as was second-term trustee Harman Pandher as vice-chair.

Burton is entering his 10th term as trustee having first been elected in 1987 when the district included 45 schools enrolling 17,000 students. Today, it’s home to 49 schools and 24,000 students and more than 70 different languages spoken at home, according to a district press release.

“Every learner is unique. We are proud of the work we have done to support programs that best meet the needs of each learner, while being fiscally responsible,” Burton said in his inaugural speech. “We look forward to continuing to work with our staff, partners and community so that each learner has the opportunity to reach their full potential.”

The board elected past-chair Baljinder Narang as the district’s representative to the provincial council of the BC School Trustees’ Association, while trustee Meiling Chia was elected as the alternate rep.

All the incumbents were re-elected in last month’s civic election, including Larry Hayes and Gary Wong, which saw the Burnaby Citizens Association sweep all seats on city council and school board for the third-straight election.

The lone exception was James Wang, who was elected to Burnaby council. His vacant spot on school board was filled by former Burnaby parks commissioner Katrina Chen.

At Byrne Creek secondary, students are not just putting together Christmas hampers for needy families in the community, they’re helping their own.

This is the 10th year the South Burnaby school will be donating to local families and at 80 hampers, it’s the most they’ve ever done.

The students’ families include many refugees, new immigrants and single parents who could all use some help over the holidays, said Laida Falsetto, teacher advisor for the school’s student government, which is organizing the hamper campaign.

The closure of Byrne Creek for two weeks over the Christmas break makes it that much more difficult for families since students must go without breakfast and lunch programs they’d normally get at school, Falsetto added.

The identities of the families being helped is kept strictly confidential, with students only knowing their needs, including Halal foods for people of Muslim faith, which they try to meet. The hampers were to be delivered this week by teachers, community partners and volunteers.

“It’s good to see students being helped at Byrne Creek because it could be the person sitting next to you in class,” said Sonya Sran, 16, vice-president of the school’s student government.

“It really shows how united we stand as a school,” said Sran, a Grade 11 student.

Falsetto said the school of about 1,000 students is pretty

tight-knit. “Everyone struggles in all

different ways and the struggles kind of unite us.”

Matteo Ferraresso, 16, the student government’s treasurer, said the students raised over $4,000 for the hampers from community donors, including the Tzu Chi Foundation and Vancity, and fundraising.

Teachers provided some incentives for the fundraising, noted Sran. After raising $1,000 three teachers will put on pants without any hands. At the $1,500 mark vice-principal Anita Sortome will dye her hair in a Christmas color, either red

or green. And at the $2,000 mark, vice-principal Fonda Papathanasiou agreed to wax both his legs.

Sran added that all three fundraising thresholds were met, and there will be additional opportunities to raise money as students will pay an as-yet-undetermined amount for the rare chance to rip off a waxing strip on Papathanasiou’s big day, sometime in January.

Principal David Starr said Byrne Creek is unique as the only secondary-level community school in Burnaby school district, which has had to pick up the slack when social service agencies

have cut back on their services. “As we evolve along our path

as a secondary community school we’re rapidly discovering that our greatest source of strength are our students themselves who take on a tremendous number of causes and events to give back to their community,” Starr said. “This is not an us giving to them sort of thing. It’s a community supporting and empowering itself.”

And while teenagers often “get a lot of bad press,” he said, “I can tell you with no ifs, ands or buts the students we are privileged to work with here are leaders who can put adults to shame.”

Students prepare 80 hampers for students’ families in need

Wanda ChOW/neWsLeaderByrne Creek secondary student council vice-president Sonya Sran and president Alyana Angeles were among several students packing Christmas hampers Tuesday. The South Burnaby school raised more than $4,000 through community donations and student fundraising to produce 80 hampers for Byrne Creek families in need.

Corrigan believes the courts are trying to avoid dealing with a controversial situation.

At the provincial appeal court, Burnaby had wanted to appeal a BC Supreme Court judge’s decision not to grant an interim injunction, to prevent Kinder Morgan from working on the mountain.

The company has applied to almost triple capacity of its Trans Mountain pipeline between Edmonton and Burnaby to allow for increased exports of oil sands crude to overseas markets.

Its study work was to determine the feasibility of routing the new pipeline through Burnaby Mountain to its Westridge marine terminal. Despite highly publicized protests through late November, the company completed its work.

Corrigan said he expects the courts to argue that the city’s request is now a moot point since the work is finished.

But this is a long-term play for Burnaby.

“We’re looking for a declaration of what our relevant rights are … If there’s future activities, whether or not we can come back to the court and get an injunction.”

Corrigan, a lawyer himself, said the case is not, as some would suggest, a “slam dunk that the federal government can do whatever it wants.” He noted that an omnibus financial bill introduced in Parliament, if passed, will give federal agencies such as the NEB even more power and control.

And while the NEB, a board appointed by the federal government, believes its statute gives it the powers of the federal government to override municipal bylaws, Burnaby argues that’s not so.

“Shouldn’t the federal government have to come in and actively do something if they’re going to exert authority, and that causes a debate not just in the NEB but in the House of Commons?” Corrigan said.

But contrary to what some critics might say, Burnaby is not playing Don Quixote and tilting at windmills, he said.

Burnaby’s case has wide-ranging implications affecting all municipalities, he stressed. They include whether or not Port Metro Vancouver can ignore Metro Vancouver’s air quality bylaws, and whether CP Rail can park its rail cars in the Arbutus corridor against the wishes of Vancouver city hall.

“We’ve got a 19th century constitution trying to deal with 21st century problems. You’ve got a constitution designed to enable the federal government to bind the continent together now being used to trample on the rights of local governments.”

He said he expects the city’s case will end up in the Supreme Court of Canada and even then likely won’t completely settle the issue.

“It doesn’t matter where you are these issues are coming up much more frequently just because the [federal] agencies are feeling empowered by the federal government to throw their weight around,” Corrigan said. “They believe they’ve got Ottawa in the palm of their hands—the oil companies, the rail companies, the port corporation—they all figure they’ve got things going their way in Ottawa. And now’s the time for them to assert whatever they want in order to try and push the envelope. Where formerly they might have worked much more cooperatively, they’re now meeting up with cities who aren’t prepared to accept their edict and accommodate them.”

Police seek witnesses to crashesBurnaby RCMP are seeking witnesses to two motor vehicle

crashes last month. On Nov. 3, at about 5:30 p.m. a cyclist and a vehicle collided

on Patterson Avenue and Castlewood Crescent (File No. 51071). The cyclist was injured and taken to hospital.

Another cyclist helped at the scene before paramedics arrived and may have witnessed the incident, say Burnaby RCMP. Investigators want to speak to that cyclist or anyone else who may have seen the crash.

Then on Nov. 16, at about 2:45 p.m., two vehicles collided at Imperial Street and Sperling Avenue (File No. 53110). One of the vehicles involved fled the scene.

A number of witnesses also left the scene before police arrived. Burnaby RCMP want to speak to those people or anyone else who has information about the incident.

Anyone who witnessed the accidents is asked to call Const. Riley Dorais at 604-294-7922 and note the file numbers.

Toy run honours ‘Const. Blundell’Charitable work of a pint-sized honourary RCMP constable is

carrying on in his memory.Keian Blundell was five years old when he made his first

donation of toys to B.C. Children’s Hospital in 2012. He had spent much time at the hospital during his illness but that year he got to go home for Christmas.

Feeling badly for the sick kids left behind at the hospital, he organized a toy run, delivering 16 toys to the hospital’s oncology ward that year.

In 2013, Blundell was made an honourary member of the RCMP’s Troop 15 and presented with a custom-made red serge.

“He was a brilliant soul, full of compassion and sadly Honorary Constable Keian Blundell lost his battle with cancer on Jan. 1, 2014,” said a Burnaby RCMP press release.

“In honour of his memory and generosity, this year Burnaby RCMP Const. Sam Bowen with help from Burnaby City employee Terri Wilson, collected toys to honour Keian’s legacy.” Staff at the Burnaby RCMP detachment collected and donated more than 340 toys for Keian’s Holiday Wish Toy Drive as well as raised $700 which will be used to buy toys for sick kids.

I’d like to think my mother raised me right (and I’m sure she’d like to think so, too).

I use my manners, hold the door open for others, chew with my mouth closed… and so on.

But a recent, brief conversation between a few Vancouver radio personalities got me thinking.

One told her co-hosts about her experience picking up something that a stranger in line in front of her had dropped.

The stranger, she said, simply took the rescued item back and carried on with her business – no nod, no smile and not a word to indicate the effort was even remotely appreciated.

Bothered by the indifference, when the host got to the front of the line she mentioned the incident to the store clerk – who asked if she had done the deed to be thanked.

It’s an interesting question: Do people do good deeds just to be thanked? A better question, I think, is: Why would anyone not say thank you for a good deed done? It’s not a difficult thing to

do, and it can just as instantly brighten the giver’s day as much as the deed did the recipient’s.

Or have we simply come to take the goodwill of others for granted?

Perhaps the recipient cited by the DJ was simply having a tough day; at the end of her rope, even. Let’s face it, few, if any, of the people we see every day – be they strangers, acquaintances, colleagues or close friends and family – are sailing through life carefree. Some are carrying seemingly insurmountable burdens, and at this expectation-filled time of year, the weight of those only increases.

Perhaps the response can be traced back to the notion that people learn what they live, and

live what they learn.A child raised in an unchecked

atmosphere of entitlement, for example, will most likely grow into an entitled adult; someone who believes they simply deserve things – things I’d like to think the majority of people realize come at a cost, not on a platter.

Oft-quoted statistics also point to a pattern that abusive adults are commonly found to have themselves been abused as children.

Is it reasonable, then, to presume that those who don’t say thank you were never thanked themselves?

I can relate to the DJ’s discomfort with her good deed going unacknowledged, and I’m sure I’m not alone.

I’m not saying I’m a chronic do-gooder – far from it, in fact (sorry, Mom).

But I do believe that most people who do good deeds of any nature do so simply because it feels right.

Letting a door close in someone’s face simply does not

feel good. And who can simply stand back and watch, or keep walking, as someone nearby scrambles to recover a stack of papers they inadvertently dropped?

For many, it’s just second-nature to lend a hand, not to mention good karma.

No doubt, there will always be people who, for whatever reason, neglect, forget or outright refuse to say thank you.

But I’m hopeful that doesn’t deter those who do the deeds that warrant the appreciation from continuing their good-neighbour behaviour.

Just because a good deed may appear to go unnoticed, it doesn’t mean it hasn’t made someone’s day a little better, whether they realize it right away or somewhere down the road.

And maybe, just maybe, it will change their course the next time an opportunity to help out arises.

Thankless tasks in age of entitlement

The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled, in a split vote, that police don’t need a search warrant to look at the contents of an arrest suspect’s cell phone.

Officers have to meet several conditions first, including taking detailed notes on how they searched and what they found.

This is a major issue of privacy.Historically, police have had the

right, during an arrest, to search a person’s purse or carry bag for evidence related to a suspected crime, or for weapons.

A cell phone could be a weapon, as seen with the Boston Marathon bombings.

And one could contain information compromising public safety, or be used to evade law enforcement.

But should cell phones, or any mobile digital device be an exception to those historical rules?

According to the Supreme Court decision, prompt access to a cell phone could help locate an accomplice to a crime or preserve evidence that would be otherwise lost.

Only recent e-mails, texts, photos and the call log will be available, according to the majority judges.

The minority, however, felt that cell phones are different than carry bags and should be treated differently.

They are computers, and search warrants are required to check those in homes. Cell phones contain vast amounts of personal information, which is why they have password access.

Section 8 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms provides everyone in Canada with protection against unreasonable search and seizure.

The Canadian Civil Liberties Association is correct in this case, that because the capacity to discover private information on a cell phone is so much greater than if being frisked, a warrantless search is unreasonable.

COMMENTWell, it’s that time of year

again. Kids bursting with excitement. Teachers making last-minute adjustments behind the scenes.

Parents aiming their camcorders to capture every moment. And then the curtain opens...

’Tis the season for students to give amazing performances!

In the past two weeks, I’ve had the pleasure of attending Cariboo Hill’s Jazz Café, Lyndhurst’s A Hippity Hop Christmas, Byrne Creek’s Oliver Twist, Capitol Hill’s A Dickens of a Christmas, and Brentwood Park’s Legend of Polar Mountain.

From elementary to secondary, one end of Burnaby to the other, the common thread that ties these school productions together is a commitment to music and the performing arts.

In Burnaby, unlike many school districts, every student receives music education from Kindergarten to Grade 7 from a specialist teacher, and every secondary school has music, drama, and dance teachers offering a variety of courses and extracurricular opportunities.

The benefits to children and youth from instruction in music and the visual and performing arts are well documented. And the investment is well worth it. But no institute or think tank can quantify the value of these experiences for our students and school communities with a number or rank.

Instead, I’ll leave it to a parent to share (with her permission, of course) why it’s so important that we continue to pack those gyms, theatres, and auditoriums, at the very least, once a year:

“Exhale... yesterday was the happiest day of my life since I became a Mommy. Yesterday was Jayna’s first Christmas concert at school.

Those that know Jayna understand how challenging social interaction and social environments have been for her and know how extremely overwhelming

they have been in the past. Yesterday she completely overcame those challenges and sparkled like a bright star. She walked up on the stage with her class, looked for me in the crowd, waved with the hugest smile, our eyes connected and so did our hearts.

She resisted every urge to come running down to hug me, instead remained in place and blew me at least 20 kisses. She clutched her heart necklace that I gave her to wear and waited for the music to start. I was so thrilled that she had “made it” on stage! Yay!

Then the music started. She sang her little heart out

actions and all. I was snapping photos, singing along and my heart was gushing. Not for the fact that she was “performing” well but because she had finally arrived in a place of “joy” in her life.

Her anxiety was no longer preventing her from living a life of heartfelt joy. For a spirited young girl to spend the first five years struggling with feeling connected and at peace with anything or anyone, she had finally experienced true bliss.

Trusting her teacher’s lead,

trusting her little friends around her, feeling their nervous energy surrounding her, managing her own nervousness and anchoring her eyes and heart with mine as she looked out into the audience.

So there I was snapping photos, singing, waving, blowing kisses and bawling my eyes out because I was witnessing my daughter’s first blissful and joyful moment.

One that she let go of all her fear, grounded herself and sang the hell out of “I wanna hippopotamus for Christmas!”

She sang with confidence, with pride and pure happiness. I witnessed that.

I have longed for this day. For her to just let go and shine bright in her own light. Yesterday she sparkled more radiantly than ever. She felt it. She felt pride. She felt joy. She felt peace. She felt connection with self. Finally.”

May all our students feel the same this holiday season and throughout their educational journeys.

Weeks and months after holiday buying binge often the busiest for bankruptcy trusteesMario [email protected]

Kelly Chow doesn’t look like Scrooge.

But his cautionary words would clamp shut the wallets of even the most frenzied Christmas shoppers.

Chow is a trustee in bankruptcy for BDO Canada. He’s the guy people get sent to see when they’ve spent too much money and can no longer pay their bills.

Unfortunately, said Chow, the weeks and months after the holiday buying binge are often his busiest.

According to the Bank of Montreal, Canadians will spend an average of $1,517 this Christmas, a lot of it on credit. That will be added on to the $20,000 the average Canadian already owes, not including their mortgage.

When those credit card bills start arriving in January’s mail, it can be a tipping point for some, said Chow. They make the minimum monthly payment and figure they’re on top of things. They start

using credit cards to pay off other credit cards, or they borrow against the equity they’ve accumulated in their house.

But there’s a price to be paid for such bad habits, said Chow. Often that’s an appointment with him.

“Credit cards divorce the pain of

spending with the pleasure of buying,” said Chow. “It makes it easy to fall into a bad cycle.”

Chow said we’re conditioned to spend money. Shopping is pleasurable. Never more so than during the Christmas season; gifts make people happy.

“It strokes your ego,” said Chow.

But not managing expectations and exceeding a budget can bring dire consequences.

“Credit can be a short-term fix,” said Chow. “But like most things in life, it will only get worse.”

Chow said most people with debt problems will do anything they can to avoid a meeting with him, including accumulating even more debt.

“We’re like the undertakers of the economy,” said Chow. “Nobody wants to see an undertaker.”

To avoid that fate, Chow has several simple suggestions:

• Resist online shopping. It’s too easy and makes the consequences of that spending seem too remote.

• Track income and expenses. Spend only cash you have on hand. Debt is like spending your future.

• Make a budget for holiday spending, and stick to it. Chow

said a good way to start is by examining “needs and wants.”

• Be open and frank about money. “The money discussion should not be

taboo at any time of year,” said Chow.twitter.com/newsleaderfotog

Dear Rudolph, Since you’re the team lead with the reindeer, I want to respond to their request to

replace the sled. Yes, it certainly is showing some wear and tear and the

steering seems a little loose.

I will give their suggestions consideration before making a final decision

later this month. Prancer was certainly enthusiastic about the new

Chevrolet Tahoe and its strong performance rating and handling

in rough weather conditions. I think Dancer is lobbying hard for

the Nissan Murano more so because of its fine lines and exquisite

interior. I would be happy with heated seats but the full range of

electronic systems is pretty neat too. I recall we got into quite a squeeze

last year in Nelson and the backup camera sure would have helped.

Please tell Comet we appreciate his suggestion but that the car named for him is

no longer in production. As I recall, it would have been a bit of tight squeeze and

more so at the end of the night after scoffing all those Christmas cookies left by

the children under their trees.

The Ford Edge looks very racy so it doesn’t surprise me that Dasher would plump

for that crossover vehicle. Donner and Blitzen both

voted for the Volkswagen Touareg, a nod to their distant

ethnicity I suspect. Very roomy and refined, but perhaps a

bit expensive in this economic climate.

Cupid really had fuel economy in mind when

suggesting the new Honda CRV, also citing

its suitability for a growing family. Oh, and

I know Cupid has a new friend but we can’t

possibly add a reindeer to the team -

maybe next year . . .

More Murano sizzle for your moneyWhen the original Nissan Murano was introduced in 2002, it was one of a number of car-based crossover vehicles that helped build the mid-size family SUV category. What that original model had was a unique take on design that made it stand out from the crowd. Here we are in 2015 and Nissan wants to recapture some of that origi-nal sizzle with this third generation Murano. With a bold, eye-popping design that looks like nothing on the road, this latest model has a sharper price, an upscale interior and refined ride that Nissan believes will appeal to the baby boomers this vehicle is targeted at. After spending a very full day driving around California’s Napa valley, I believe that this new product has an even larger possible market than just baby boomers.LooksSince the 2015 Nissan Murano is just about to hit dealership floors, the Napa region was the first in North America to get to see it. By the reaction from other drivers on the road, this mid-

sized people mover gets a lot of attention. The bold front design now incorporates the headlamp treatment that will start to

migrate across its other vehicles, like the new Maxima coming soon. The wedge shaped look is referred to as a boomerang and it is mimicked in the rear lights as well. Both the front and rear have LED accents and the main headlamps are LED on the top trim levels. The

other design highlight is the roof, that looks like it is float-ing thanks to a blacked out rear windows and roof pillars. This design also features curvaceous rear hips, making the design modern and stylish. Now sold as front wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD), and priced from $29,998, the Murano is an option for many potential buyers. It is too bad that only the top Platinum model comes with 20-inch wheels, all the other trim levels are fitted with 18-inch wheels.InsideThe interior is a reason that many people will consider this

product, not just affluent baby boomers. The design is simple but looks upmarket; the Murano might be an alternative to buying a Lexus RX350, for less money, or a young family wanting something more upscale than a compact SUV, for not much more money. The dash and surround-ing materials all looks first rate. The trim that looks like wood isn’t, rather a plastic that mimics wood but some might think it feels cheap but it certainly looks good. The base $29,998 (FWD) S-Trim isn’t base at all thanks to heated front seats, Bluetooth,

navigation, backup camera and satellite radio. The next model up is the $32,998 (FWD) SV and it adds a power driver’s seat, huge moon roof, a power lift gate and heated steering wheel. There is also the $38,398 (AWD) SL that includes leather seats, Bose stereo and more or the top $43,498 (AWD) platinum that amps up the goodies to include heated rear seats, cooled front seats, 20-inch wheels and a host of safety features.DriveThe 260hp 3.5L V6 engine is a

carry over from the last model but the body of the new Murano is 66kg lighter. This and a modi-fied continuously variable trans-mission (CVT) helps to improve fuel economy to 11.2L/100km in the city and 8.3L/100km on the highway, using the new, stricter fuel ratings for 2015. The tuning of the Murano is very relaxed, almost luxury-like. The steering is very easy to operate; some might find it too light. The pace at which the CVT works is very subdued, meaning the car wants to be in the low RPM range to help extract the best economy

but when pushed it can take a while to wake the car up. To get around this there are now set shift points in the CVT that can be accessed through the trans-mission’s manual mode. It would be better to have a sport setting for the CVT but it isn’t offered.VerdictOverall the packaging of the 2015 Murano is very good. The interior has plenty of room for the front and rear passengers and the seats are comfortable. The cargo area is very big and the square shape of the hatch makes loading easier. This product should be attractive to buyers of compact SUVs that want more room and V6 power for just slightly more. Shoppers of premium brands who want a refined ride and interior for less money should consider the higher trim levels. This new Murano will certainly get atten-tion for its exterior styling, but dig deeper there is more to this product than just an attractive look, there is value and comfort that is available to a wide range of potential buyers.

The packaging of the 2015 Murano is very good, Zack Spencer says, but offers value and comfort too.

Yes, winter weather has arrived early this year, but there are some clever new products available designed to make life with an auto less stressful and safer in sub-zero temperatures.Ranging in price from $9.99 to $159.99 these prod-ucts could also be a great Christmas gift for just about anyone who drives. Working with its suppliers, Canadian Tire has helped develop some new auto products that address win-ter driving problems. They’re as basic as scratch-proof snow and ice removal tool

that’s easier on your car’s paintwork to a compact and light-weight emergency traction aid that could be a life-saver.The Garant EVA Snow-brush has a bristle-free brush with a foam head that’s less abrasive on vehicle paintwork. It ad-dresses the negative feed-back from customers about conventional snowbrushes and it’s sold in two sizes. The 28-inch brush retails for $15.99 and the 36-inch brush retails for $19.99.Getting stuck in a friend’s snow-covered driveway can

be embarrassing, getting stuck on the side of a lonely highway is far more seri-ous! The Trac Grabber Car Traction Aid ($39.99) is not a replacement for conventional chains, as it’s not intended for highway driving use. Easy to use and quick fitting, this traction aid is also far lighter and easier to store in a vehicle than tire chains. A truck version ($49.99) of the Trac Grabber Car Traction Aid is also available. Sold in pairs, a Trac Grabber is attached to each drive wheel, similar to a tire chain (but is much

easier to use). It’s designed to supply provide enough traction to release a car (stuck in snow or mud) and get it back on the high-way (where it should be removed). Another good auto safety gift idea is the MotoMas-ter Eliminator Tripod Light ($29.99). This multi-function light has an articulating head with red LED emergency light and fold-put tripod legs that extend for additional stability when placed on the road to warn drivers that they are approaching a broken-down vehicle. It also features a powerful lithium-ion rechargeable battery.Good vision when driving is very important in cold weather. If you have to park you’re vehicle outside overnight, the Subzero ArcticGuard Snow and Ice Windshield Cover ($9.99) is an inexpensive investment. A hook system secures it inside the car, however, users do complain about it flapping in strong winds. You may also consider upgrading your current headlights to SilverStar Ultra Lights ($59.99). They promise up to 50 per-cent brighter light with up to 40 percent more down-road illumination than standard halogen lights. New wiper blades can also make a big improvement in driver vision and a set of Bosch Icon Wipers cost from $24.99 to $25.99.

This premium dual-rubber synthetic product claims to last 40 per cent longer than other blades. If you have a fear of run-ning out of fuel, or a friend who does it regularly or you simply want a peace-of-mind back-up supply of gas for a long driving trip, Spare Fuel ($19.99) is a non-flammable gasoline derivative that is safe to store in the trunk. It’s safe to use in all engines that use unleaded gasoline, comes with filler tube and it can be stored in your vehicle all-year-round.The most common winter auto emergency is a dead battery. Yes, you could carry a set of jumper cables and hope that you can get a boost from another vehicle, but that’s not always easy or possible. Another solution is the Noco Genius Mini Booster, GB30 ($159.99). It may seem a little pricey, but this compact yet sur-prisingly powerful lithium-ion jump starter pack is mistake-proof and multi-functional. Offering 400 peak amps it can provide up to seven jump-starts on a single charge. It’s also a seven-mode LED flashlight and it can be used as a portable recharge (USB) dock for other electronic devices.

Burnaby’s Marcus Vela (12) of the Langley Rivermen will be playing for Canada West in the World Junior A Challenge in Kindersley, Sask., during the Christmas holidays.

gaRy ahujaBlack PReSS

gary ahujaBlack Press

Burnaby’s Marcus Vela is hoping to bring a gold medal home for the holidays.

Vela survived the final cuts last week, earning a spot on the Canada West roster for the World Junior A Challenge.

“It is definitely a huge accomplishment and a huge honour,” said the 17-year-old on the phone from Calgary, following an early morning practice last week.

“Wearing that Maple Leaf is one of the proudest things I could have done. It is an honour to be selected to this team; a lot of work went into it.”

The tournament — which features Canada West, Denmark and Russia in one pool and Canada East, Switzerland the United States in the other — began yesterday (Sunday) and runs until Dec. 20 in Kindersley, Sask.

Vela is a second-year centre for the junior A Langley Rivermen. While it may have been nice to have Vela handy for the games — he is fourth on the team in scoring — the club is happy he is getting this opportunity.

“Obviously it is an honour to wear the Maple Leaf,” said Rivermen head coach and general manager Bobby Henderson. “That is something that he will be able to take with him for the rest of his life.

“We are thrilled for him from an organizational standpoint.”

This is just the latest accomplishment for Vela, a second-year forward.

In his rookie season with Langley, the forward put up 11 goals and 11 assists in 54 games. Despite being just 16 years

old, Vela did earn himself a scholarship to the University of New Hampshire. He won’t join the NCAA Division 1 hockey program until the 2016/17 season.

Through the season’s first 28 games, Vela has already surpassed last year’s point total, with five goals and 19 assists.

Vela said there is a big difference for him between years one and two in the league.

“Coming in as a 16-year-old, you are just trying to learn the ropes, draw from

some experience from the older guys and really learn how the league works,” he said. “And having that experience from last year really helps a lot; you have to work hard for a full 60 minutes every night, that is definitely what I learned.”

Having his scholarship taken care of completes one goal Vela had entering the BCHL.

“It was a big relief,” he said. “To have that happen was a tremendous honour and a privilege for me. I knew I could (now) just focus on the team aspect and getting better and better, both individually and as a team.”

Vela described himself as a power forward, comfortable either on the wing — which he will play for Canada West — or as a centre, his primary role with the Rivermen.

“I like to drive pucks to the net, work hard in the corners,” he said. “Just try to outmuscle guys and be a force out there.”

Vela, who is six-foot-two and 200 pounds, has proved to be an adept playmaker, as evidenced by his 19 assists.

He downplayed his playmaker role, however, crediting “line-mates who can bury the puck.”

Henderson raved about Vela’s work level and attitude.

“You get an honest effort from him every night,” he said. “You know what you are going to get: he works both ends of the rink, he does all the little things well, he is willing to sacrifice his body to win, he has good offensive ability, skates well. He is just a good all around player and person.”

The biggest difference from last season to this is Vela’s maturation and confidence.

“He knows he is a pretty important part of our hockey club now and is starting to assert himself,” Henderson said. “I think he is really starting to believe in himself.”

Vela is determined to use his experiences at the World Junior A Challenge when he returns to Langley.

He will re-join the team in the new year as the Rivermen are off after this weekend until Jan. 2.

“I am going to take all my experiences playing for Canada (and) it is going to help me as a person and a player,” Vela said.

Vela, who is eligible for the 2015 NHL entry draft, was on the most recent NHL Central Scouting players to watch list.
