ASLA NATIONAL CONFERENCE: ASLA Illinois is working with ASLA nationalorganizers to integrate history and future-focused programs, exhibits and tours thatcelebrate the Plan of Chicago and the region's rich planning tradition into the 2009conference slated for Chicago. The estimated attendance will be 6,000 - 8,000participants. (September 18-21, 2009)

PLANS OF CHICAGO: An illustrated book will assess the Plan's approach in light ofsubsequent Chicago planning and determine its relevance to current existing conditions.The results will be tested with proposals for improving seven Chicago sites in the centerand on the periphery. (September 2009 )

Archimedia Workshop MAKE NO LITTLE PLANS: DANIEL BURNHAM AND THE AMERICAN CITY: Thisdocumentary film explores the fascinating life and complex legacy of architect and cityplanner Daniel Hudson Burnham and how his vision to organize the chaos of nineteenthcentury America has shaped the nation's towns and cities for generations.

Arquitectos URBAN SPACES FOR THE LATINO COMMUNITY: This program/conference willfamiliarize designers and the general public with cultural and special needs of the Latinocommunity. Participants will learn about the composition of the Latino population and itsgrowth, review images of designed spaces and discuss the challenges for designprofessionals working with Latinos in Chicago and the U.S. (June 2009)

Art Institute of Chicago JULES GUERIN DRAWINGS: This exhibition will showcase Guerin's original drawingsand dramatic renderings from the Plan of Chicago on a rotating exhibit throughout 2009.(September 6, 2008 - December 14, 2009)

Art Institute of Chicago RYERSON-BURNHAM LIBRARY EXHIBITS: The Ryerson & Burnham Libraries willpresent two exhibitions related to planning in Chicago. The first (July 28- September 29,2009) will feature people and events leading up to the 1909 Plan, drawing upon theDaniel Burnham and Edward Bennett archival collections. The second exhibition(September 29-December 1, 2009) will survey various post-1909 plans for Chicago.(TBD)

Association for the WolfLake Initiative

A poster contest will ask third graders, among other youth, to depict how the Wolf Lakewatershed is in keeping with Burnham's 1909 plan for the lakefront. The contest will beheld in conjunction with the 9th annual Wolf Lake Bi-State Wetlands, Wind & Waterfestival on May 23-24, 2009, and the 6th annual bi-state Active Living Fair at Wolf Lakeon Oct. 3, 2009.

Aurora Public Library PUBLIC PROGAMS: The library will host a variety of public programs in the fall 2009 thateducate and enlighten the community about urban planning, along with the hiostry of theBurnham Plan and the history of Aurora and includes the Make Big Plans exhibit. (Fall2009)

Big Shoulders Fund MAPPING BURIED TREASURES & FUTURE VISIONS: Each of the seventy-six BigShoulders Fund 5th grade classes will research one of Chicago neighborhoods not theirown and prepare an extensive report that captures the past history, current situation, andvision for the future of their assigned neighborhood. Students will gather in April 2009 andtransfer the Big Dreams visions to a mixed media map that form a tapestry of Chicago'sneighborhoods. (School Year 2008-2009)

Bruce Mau Design THE CHICAGO PROJECT: The project is a multi-dimensional initiative designed toprototype new sustainable solutions to challenges we face as a city. It is structuredaround the issues of energy, urban infrastructures, movement, health, waste, food andwater and will take place in collaboration with the School of the Art Institute, University ofIllinois at Chicago, the Illinois Institute of Technology, Archeworks and the ChicagoArchitecture Foundation. CALUMET-SAG TRAIL: The trail is a collaborative inter-governmental and private effortto construct a 26 mile multi-use trail linking the near-south suburbs of Chicago from LakeMichigan west to the I&M Canal Trail. The trails crosses 14 diverse communities, featuresthe industrial history of the south side and natural resources along a working river. Aribbon-cutting and ground breaking is planned for June 6, 2009 on National Trails Day.(Summer 2009)

BEYOND BURNHAM / CLASS & EXHIBITION: 11th and 12th grade students in theAcademy's Urban Design class will focus on the Plan of Chicago through research andinterdisciplinary projects that will explore the "spirit of Chicago," the Plan's legacy andother pertinent design and planning issues during the 2008-2009 School year. A specialevent will showcase student presentations and guest speakers. (April-May 2009 Exhibit)

BURNHAM 2.0: Burnham 2.0 is an international design competition to develop a highspeed inter-model train terminal in Chicago's West Loop district. To parallel the designcompetition, members of the Chicago Architectural Club will work in teams to rethink theChicago metropolitan area. The winning entry and other selected projects will bedisplayed as part of the 2008 Chicago Humanities Festival. (November 2008)

CHICAGO MODEL CITY: A major exhibition that includes a scale model of Chicago. Theexhibition will engage the public in learning about major ideas in the planning of Chicagoand all urban environments. This humanities-based project will enable people to discoverChicago's history and will demonstrate how Chicago served as a model to cities. (March2009)

BE LIKE BURNHAM: The CAF Buck Lecture Hall will be the focal point for youthactivities relating to the Chicago Model. The walls of this space will be devoted tointerpretation of the Plan for younger minds with expectations that adults will learn aswell. ORD: CHICAGO O'HARE: CAF will open in its Buck Lecture Hall a photographyexhibition that explores O'Hare Airport. This is a case study of the large-scaletransportation infrastructure planning that was essential for maintaining Chicago’s statusas a global city. The exhibition will explore ORD in terms of its relationship to Chicago, itsdesign (it served as a model for airports internationally), and as an industrial landscape.(January 15 - May 5, 2009)

THE 1909 BURNHAM-BENNETT PLAN OF CHICAGO: The presentation will show theinfluence of the Plan and explore how planners and government officials look at it forinspiration by graphic overlays from 1909 and 2009. Current planning efforts for theChicago region will also be introduced and will be compared to the efforts undertaken byBurnham. Other trained CAF docents will present to libraries, community centers andbook clubs. (TBD)

BURNHAM PLAN CENTENNIAL TOURS: CAF will reconfigure existing and create newtours to highlight Burnham’s accomplishments. The Burnham-designed Santa Fe(formerly Railway Exchange) Building (1904), which once housed Burnham’s office, isstill topped by the penthouse built for the Plan project. (2009)

Chicago Botanic Garden FAIRCHILD CHALLENGE: Photo Essay Contest for Teens. Teens in schools from allover the Chicago Metropolitan area will research and then create a photo essay exploringhow The Plan of Chicago has affected his/her community. (2008-2009 school year)

Chicago Botanic Garden AUTHOR LECTURE & BOOK SIGNING: The program will feature an author who takes ahistorical perspective on the impact of the Burnham Plan or authors who address thefuture of sustainable cities. (TBD)

Chicago Botanic Gardenand the Forest PreserveDistrict of Cook County

MCDONALD WOODS TRAIL EXPANSION: In 2009, the Garden will inaugurate a new,much enlarged walking trail system through the 100-acre McDonald Woods. This trailsystem will interpret the unique oak, woody plant and perennial flora ecosystem of thisintact northern Illinois woodland and will be linked via the Garden's east perimeter road tothe extensive system of Skokie Lagoon trails (Cook County Forest Preserve District) thatterminate at the Garden's southern border.

Chicago Botanic Garden LANDSCAPE SYMPOSIUM: The Chicago Botanic Garden plans to host a symposium inthe fall of 2009. Though the specific content is yet to be determined, the symposium willaddress Burnham plan goals by focusing on the future of sustainable landscaping. (Fall2009)

Chicago Botanic Gardenand the Girl Scouts ofGreater Chicago andNorthwest Indiana

GIRL SCOUT BADGES: The Chicago Botanic Garden will collaborate with the GirlScouts of Chicago to develop a new series of sustainability badges relevant to Burnhamplan goals. The Garden will offer the badges through our existing Girl Scout programsinvolving over 5,000 youth. (TBD)

Chicago Children'sMuseum

THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT: A family-friendly curriculum to introduce elementaryengineering and architectural concepts will be available on CCM’s website in 2009. TheBuilt Environment includes easy-to-follow instructions and sample videos to allow afacilitator to involve families (with children 5 to 8 years of age) in engaging hands-onactivities that spark interest and expand knowledge. The goal is to enable children andadults to forge a deeper understanding and appreciation of the built environment in whichthey live. (TBD)

Chicago History Museum CHICAGO HISTORY MAGAZINE: The Chicago History Museum will dedicate an issue ofChicago History Magazine to the design and impact of the Burnham Plan. (TBD)

Chicago History Museum 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE PRESENTATION OF PLAN OF CHICAGO: The eventwill mark the 100th anniversary of Daniel Burnham's presentation of the Plan to the City.It will be incorporated into the Museum's annual July 4th festivities. (July 4, 2009)

THE PLAN OF CHICAGO: 100 YEARS OF CITY BUILDING: The panel discussion willexplore why Chicago is known as the city that gave birth to modern urban planning, whatthe forces were that came together in 1909 to produce Burnham and Bennett's Plan ofChicago, where the imprints of this visionary plan are on our regional landscape, and howthe Plan continues to inspire us 100 years later. THE GLOBAL CITY OF THE FUTURE: This second "Thinking Big" program about theBurnham Plan and its legacy will tackle challenges facing Chicago and other global citiesin the coming century. (November 2, 2008 at the Harris Theatre.)

Chicago Loop Alliance STATE STREET PLANTERS: The Chicago Loop Alliance will offer a walking tour ofBurnham-inspired installations on State Street between Wacker Drive and CongressParkway. This offering will highlight the emerging mixed-use"24/7" nature of today'sLoop. The program will be supported by a downloadable audio tour available atwww.chicagoloopalliance.com. (May - August 2009)

Chicago Metropolis 2020 TRANSPORTATION FOR A NEW CENTURY: REFORMING ATTITUDES ANDINSTITUTIONS IN ILLINOIS. Chicago Metropolis 2020 will use the opportunity of theBurnham Plan Centennial to launch a comprehensive campaign to change the way wefinance and manage transportation in Illinois. Major legislative and leadership changesare required to adjust to the new realities of higher energy costs, global warming, thedifferential effect of transportation on poor neighborhoods, and the effects on the State’seconomy. (TBD)

Chicago MetropolitanAgency for Planning

CMAP'S GO TO 2040: A campaign to get everyone in our region thinking forward --imagining a brighter future and contributing bold ideas to help make it happen. GO TO2040 gets communities talking, facilitates dialogue, researches alternative scenarios,and pulls it all together into a comprehensive and sustainable plan for the region through2040 and beyond. Throughout the Burnham Centennial, partners and the public will beable to participate, and the campaign will reach a crescendo in Spring 2009. That's whenresidents across the region will express their preferences about several alternativescenarios for how the region could take shape, including the location of roads, transit,jobs, housing, open space, and other essential elements. (2009)

Chicago Park District BOLD PLANS BIG DREAMS DAY CAMPS: During the 2009 summer, throughout thecity, these day camps will educate Chicago children about Burnham’s contributions andallow them to imagine and help plan a better city.

TOURS & LECTURES: Chicago Park Historian Julia Bachrach will lead tours and givelectures about Burnham’s contributions to the city’s venerable park system inculding"Vision’s of Green: Daniel Burnham and Jens Jensen’s Open Space Plans for Chicago"lecture scheduled for February 19, 2009.

Chicago Public Library BURNHAM PROGRAMS: The Chicago Public Library will hold Burnham-inspiredprogramming and discussions at all 79 locations. Programming will include: paneldiscussions, lectures, story times for children, city planning and oral history programs forteens and a "Inspiring Dreams! Promoting the Burnham Plan" exhibit at the HaroldWashington Library. CPL is also collaborating with the Newberry Library to bring the"Make Big Plans" exhibit to neighborhoods throughout the city. BURNHAM AND CHICAGO: The initiative will implement a project in CUIP-clusterschools that will challenge students to engage in a problem-based inquiry activity relatedto urban planning. This program will culminate in a Burnham Fair at the CUIP Expoattended by 1,200 CPS students, teachers, principals, and administrators from the CPSCentral Office. (2008-2009 school year)

LOCKPORT-JOLIET HERITAGE PARK: The Heritage Park Plan preserves, restores andinterprets the rich cultural and natural history in an 8- mile segment of the I & M CanalNational Heritage Corridor. Significant elements of the plan are to be completed in thenear future, including the development of the Lockport Loop Trail, the re-design of NorthLanding in Lockport, and acquisition of in-holdings within Dellwood Park. The dedicationof the North Landing project and the ribbon-cutting for the last segment of the Old PlankRoad Trail will be part of the 2009 Burnham Centennial.

THORN CREEK GREENWAY: The Thorn Creek Greenway consists of Thorn CreekWoods and upper watershed areas in Will County and the Thorn Creek District of theCook County Forest Preserve District in Cook County. The Forest Preserve District ofWill County is in the process of completing the greenway through the acquisition of nearly500 acres at the Thorn Creek’s headwaters. In addition, over the next several years, theCook County Forest Preserve District will be completing 7.5 miles of trail segments,thereby completing a gap in the Grand Illinois Trail and providing a connection to the OldPlank Road Trail.

Forever Free and Clear THE FOREVER FREE AND CLEAR BIKE TOUR: The Campaign for a Free and ClearLakefront is a grassroots coalition to remove Lakeshore Drive from Grant Park, andeventually the entire Chicago shoreline. Cyclists are provided an intimate view of thelakefront to experience Burnham's vision first hand. Discussion breaks will challengeparticipants to revision a healthier and safer Grant Park, and learn more about theinternational movement. (Summer 2009)

Graue Mill and Museum FULLERSBURG: CHICAGO’S NEIGHBOR ON THE OLD PLANK: An exhibit ofphotographs and other artifacts that illustrate Fullersburg (now incorporated into Hinsdaleand Oak Brook) and Chicago in the years leading to 1909 that examines the factors thatcaused Fullersburg to decline while Chicago boomed. Hands-on activities include simplecity planning using a magnetic board and constructing simple buildings using basicmaterials. Different construction methods represented will be early post and beam andballoon framing as well as Burnham’s method of constructing foundations forskyscrapers. (May - November 2009)

WATER: H20=LIFE EXHIBIT: MWRD is collaborating with the Field Museum on anumber of public programs related to the exhibit including script for a short video aboutthe reversal of the Chicago River, Chicagoans relationship to Lake Michigan and ourwater supply, and MWRD's infrastructure; the development of a Water Calculator so theregion’s residents may record their potable water consumption and gray wateruse/disposal, participation in "Science Saturday" and the Water Week Chicago Festival,and assisting with a seminar on water ecosystems in the region.

MWRD will sponsor various public discussions of the responsibility and stewardship ofwater resources conducted by the Illinois Humanities Council.

Newberry Library PLANS OF MANILA AND BAGUIO CITY EXHIBIT: The Newberry will draw upon itsextensive collection of materials relating to the Philippines to create a gallery exhibitionfocused on Burnham's designs for Manila and the new summer capital of Baguio City.Objects displayed will range from maps and tourist guides to government reports andscientific photographs. By the end of 2009, the major elements of the plan will be in place and thesystem will be substantially complete and celebrated as a part of the BurnhamCentennial.

A seminar and tour format will consist of morning lectures by experts on variousaspects of Burnham's and Bennett's achievements followed by afternoon walking andbus tours to see the results of their urban planning efforts. The first majormilestone toward the creation of the trail would be the execution of the rail-bankingagreement with the Union Pacific Railroad during the Burnham Centennial.

Wendella Boats BURNHAM BY BOAT: The Burnham Plan of 1909 launched Chicago into an era ofunparalleled dreams fueled by the imagination of two great men, Daniel Burnham andEdward Bennett. Their vision for the city resulted in the creation of Wacker Drive, theMichigan Avenue bridge, Northerly Island, Grant Park and much more. In celebration ofthe 100th anniversary of the Burnham Plan, Wendella Boats will provide an opportunity toview many of the sites which resulted from the plan and reshaped Chicago through a 90minute boat tour.
