EVENING SUPPORTERS

As we come to the end of yet another season, at Burnley FC Girls & Ladies we can reflect on a highly successful 12 months of female football in East Lancashire, and beyond. The sole aim of Burnley FC Girls is to provide a safe and secure environment in which girls of all abilities can play and enjoy football. By and large we have succeeded in this aim with over 140 players registered with the club from age 5 years upwards. We have had teams playing in the West Lancs League at Under 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and Youth levels with an U14 team in the North Valley & Burnley Unity and the Open Age team playing in the North West Regional Women's League. Special mention must be made of the two U14 teams, who have not only both won their respective leagues but are also cup winners; and also the Youth squad who are challenging Birkdale for the league championship having already won the Cup. Congratulations also go to the girls who represented the club in schools and county matches. As well as thanking Burnley FC for their kind support in allowing us this room this evening, I would also like to pass on our appreciation to all our sponsors for their kind financial support, without which we would be unable to provide playing strips, track suits etc.; to the managers and coaches of each team who voluntarily give up so much of their time; to the parents and guardians who transport their daughters, nieces or granddaughters the length and breadth of the North West; and finally to all the girls themselves for their dedication, determination and pride in playing for Burnley FC Ladies. Girls and women's football continues to grow in popularity with more and more coverage on both terrestrial and satellite TV and in the general press. England are looking odds on to qualify for next year’s Worlds Cup in Canada; and the Women’s Super League has just expanded from a single league to two divisions of 18. Whilst we currently have the most girls ever registered with the Club I hope we'll see more girls wanting to join with us in August for the 2014/15 season and maybe one day soon we'll see an ex Burnley FC Girls & Ladies player competing in the Women’s Super League or representing her country. Many thanks Tim Milne-Redhead Chairman

SEASON SPONSERS AND

SUPPORTERS

The girls in the Development Squad have been having fun this season learning the skills they need to play football whilst wearing out their coaches at the same time. A number of girls have joined us and moved through to the under 9’s. A few coaches have joined us for a while during the season and then moved on for a variety of reasons. All making it seem like a season of flux. But we now welcome Kevin and look forward to the stability he will bring. Constant faces with the team have been Hannah and Harriett, who have both grown in confidence helping out coaching the team and improving their skills at the same time. Huge thanks must go to the parents for their support this season and continuing to help promote Burnley Girls and Ladies.

DRIBBLEATHON

Saturday 10th May will go down as one of my proudest days since being involved with Burnley FC girls and ladies. To see over 60 girls/ladies, their coaches and even parents get involved to raise money for their club and have fun whilst doing it, was inspiring.

A whopping 108 miles were completed in total, with Cara Milne-Readhead and Sadie Mitchell dribbling the furthest at 2.5 miles each.

With at least £2,500 of sponsorship being raised, each and every person that participated should be supremely proud. It’s a phenomenal achievement for one morning dribbling a ball

Thanks are due to all the parents for supporting the fundraiser and making it the fun and successful day that it was. But also to Jo Holt for her impeccable organisation that brought the day off without a hitch, she even managed a pause on the rainy weather!

BURNLEY FC LADIES TEAM

Burnley Ladies 1st Team – Season Highlights 2013/14

At the time of writing, Burnley Ladies occupy a respectable 6th place in the North West

Regional League Premier Division, the reward for winning eight of their 14 league

matches. And with games in hand on teams around them, a top-four finish remains well

within their grasp. Considering last season’s relegation battle, our lofty position

represents considerable progress.

Key reasons for success

The two prime reasons for the improvement this campaign are:

1. An optimal blend of youth and experience

The 2013/14 season has witnessed the introduction of a batch of youngsters from the all

-conquering youth team. During the season the following players have broken into the

1st team and acquitted themselves with aplomb: Jodie Fountain (goalkeeper); Mollie

Farrell and Jodie Banks (defenders); Natalie Bell, Charlotte Coates and Millie Saunders

(midfielders); Gemma Harris and Grace Bullock (strikers). In tandem with the

experienced backbone of the team, the introduction of these rising stars has achieved an

optimal blend of zest, skill and know-how.

2. Unity and team spirit

The togetherness and team ethic displayed by the 1st-team squad has been evident

throughout the season. A cohesive group, their interchanges have been characterised by

mutual encouragement and support, even when facing defeat.

Season highlights

1. September 1st 2013, a hat-trick by flying winger, Rachael Wood, within the first 25

minutes of the opening match of the season guides Burnley to a 3 – 0 victory over

Northwich Vixens.

2. December 15th 2013, super striker, Sarah Buffell-Greenhalgh, bags five goals on the

Fylde coast in a 6 – 1 triumph over Blackpool Ladies.

3. April 3rd 2014, an outstanding team performance, oozing grit and determination,

enables Burnley to vanquish title-chasing Blackpool Wren Rovers by the odd goal in

five.

Special mention

Deserving of a special mention is Burnley’s skipper Jo Holt. Voted the best player in

the league last season, and despite over two decades of competitive football, much of it

at a high level, Jo’s commitment to the cause is unsurpassed. Her desire for the team to

succeed is matched only by her willingness to nurture and develop the more

inexperienced players, many of whom continue to benefit from her leadership and

expert guidance.

By Gary Sidley

The season started with an unofficial friendly against Padiham, a team who were

threatened with expulsion before they started due to having 3 Centre of Excellence

Players at Blackburn, yes the dreaded Blackburn. To say it was a baptism of fire was an

under - statement. We were to start our first season at under 9`s against a team who

were to become league and cup champions. It was a cold, wet and windy day at

fennyfolds! After 40 mins we were no warmer. The score was 16 nil including a number

of cynical fouls for good measure!

The week after things didn’t really get any better when we played Academy Juniors

away, another venue with no toilets. Our Parents were not happy as I think most had

been on the beer the night before. At half time the score was 10 nil or I think it was. At

the end of the game there were that many goals scored even the ref had lost count!

There were 5 different versions of the score but I think it was about 19 4. However, on a

positive note we scored our first goals. Again our girls took a bit of a battering on the

pitch as we soon realised that all the teams in the league were at least 18 months to 2

years older.

Game 3 was a bit easier in that it was only 15 nil against Wigan which was a good

result considering the average size of their players was 6ft! I think their girls should

have really been playing Rugby. They played like Rugby players!

I then pulled out the Master Tactic for the season and almost revolutionised the league

and their rules. Yes I queried a league rule which meant they had to have a debate via

Spain. Yes Spain, the Secretary had vanished to Spain but was still in charge of the

league and the fines that went with it. A bit of a coincidence hey! Anyway I managed to

introduce the famous “Retreat Rule”. It was to be the best rule ever invented for kids

Football. What a way to encourage kids to play proper football, football on the floor

from front to back. This definitely suited our style of football and our results started to

drastically improve.

The girls got better and better each week, learning positions, tactics, trying to play

football, playing as a team, learning to loose and yes eventually learning to win. Our

first win was to be against, yes, wait for it, Blackburrrrrrrrrrrrrrn! We didn’t just win

we, won comfortably 5-2 with Alisha becoming the youngest ever hatrick scorer for

Burnley Girls. Although we were only to go on and win 2 more games other results

improved and the Cricket scores were now proper Football scores. The 16 and 17 nils

were now down to 5 and 6`s.

I have being involved with Burnley Girls and Ladies for 7 years and have Coached all

ages and seen a lot of teams and this is the best standard of Football that I have ever

seen. It has been a bigger challenge for me than I expected and at times it has tested me

to the full, but I have fully enjoyed it.

Next year this group of girls will enter the Under 9`s league again and I`m confident

that we will be the team to beat. We will be the team that everyone is talking about. We

will continue to play Football in the proper way and I guarantee win or lose that all the

Girls and Parents will enjoy season 2014/2015.

Thanks to everyone and cheers for the PINT!

BURNLEY FC LADIES TEAM

The U10’S team were a brand new team of eleven girls. Five

of the girls were playing up two years whilst three of them

were playing up a year, so we knew it was going to be a tough

season. The team was the youngest in the division.

We knew it was going to be tough, our first three games were

against last years top teams Preston North End, Lostock Hall

and Euxton Villa. The girls always played with a smile on their

faces and their enthusiasm was excellent. Although we did not

win any of our opening matches the girls were improving all

the time.

Midway through the season we played in a mini champions

league and for me this is where the season really got started.

We beat Euxton Villa with Chloe Latham getting a hat trick,

we beat Town Green home and away with Sophie Riley

getting a hat trick and we drew our return game against Euxton

Villa 1-1. The team had been strengthened with three new

players coming in.

Our return games in the second half of the season were

encouraging with a slight improvement in the scores. After our

away game at Preston North End, their Manager came over to

me and complemented the girls with the way they had played

saying “that was the best performance of any team on our

home pitch all season”. Since Preston was the benchmark that

really was a complement.

All the girls should be very proud of the way they have played

and also conducted themselves on and off the pitch, you are a

credit to the club.

Finally I must say a massive thank you to all the parents who

have week in and week out been transporting the girls to the

home and away games, it would not have been possible

without your support.

Burnley FC u18 ladies have had a fantastic season 2013/14!!

Finishing runners up with 12 wins 1 draw 1 loss in the league!!

Going all the way in the cup beating league winners Birkdale in the

semi final and Oxford Grove in the final!!

10 different goal scorers throughout the season with forward

Gemma Harris notching 20, wingers Millie Saunders 17, Bryony

Bancroft 15, midfielders Natalie Bell 16, Sophie Greenwood 11,

Charlotte Coates 11 and defenders Rebecca Wilkinson 2, Hannah

Till 2, Mollie Farrell 1.

Well done to all the squad for a brilliant season!!

What a season!! The girls finished 8

th in an expanded league of 14. We welcomed 2

new players to the squad this year in Rebecca and Tiggi, which increased the number s to 13. Pre-season was a success with the girls, in that we won the Woodbank tournament and performed well in both the Bispham and Skelmersdale events. The team continued to play football as football should be played and always, no matter what the score, played with a smile. The girls played with determination, skill and have shown a considerable amount of improvement. Season highlights include doing the double over Blackburn, Academy & Woodbank. All individuals in the team are starting to find their natural positions, but are willing to play as hard in any position they are asked to play. The way the girls stick to the task, make me proud as a manager. May I take this opportunity to thank my sponsors AMI fire protection for their kind sponsorship of all the players kit, the parents for transporting the girls all around the north west, Sarah & Lyndsay for the secretarial support and lastly Steve & Shaun my assistants that have helped throughout the year.

A very mixed season for the Under 15s from the highs of a cup win on

the ground of a professional football club to the lows of not having

enough players to field a team.

The season started with a summer tournament in Bolton where the la-

dies took part in a Bolton Wanderers Ladies Cup competition and the

Clarets were crowned Challenge Cup winners with a 1-0 victory over

Bury at the Reebok Stadium.

A fantastic experience for the ladies as they prepared for their first sea-

son as an 11-a-side squad. However with various key players leaving

the team during pre-season, preparations were hit hard and most plans

that Martyn and his assistant Paul had, went straight out of the window.

The team did recruit though with some very talented players coming in to

the squad, but again lady luck wasn't smiling down on the Under 15s

with an injury list almost as long as the one with the match ready players

on it.

There were positive signs through the bad times. The way the ladies

pulled together. The constant positive pick ups should a player make a

mistake. And every week in training there were smiles on faces.

The football on show in the final games of the season was superb at

times, the way the ladies ended last season - untouchable - and once

we have a settled squad again I am sure we will be back competing

amongst the best in the league.

A pleasure to work with again this season - here is to a positive 2014/15

season!

With thanks during the season to Mollie Brennand and Cerys Ellis.

The U12s have had to put up with a strange season where, for one

reason or another, they have been unable to get into any rhythm. For

their first season at 9 a-side level, due to the number of teams wanting

to join the West Lancs League, the U12s were split into two divisions.

We were paired in, arguably, the tougher of the two divisions with the

likes of Blackpool, Man City, Preston North End and AFC Manchester.

Over the summer we were joined by two new faces, Charlotte, who has

fitted into defence really well; and Millie, a striker, who has greatly added

to our scoring capabilities.

Pre-season got off to a great start with wins against Skipton Girls and

Academy, and the Girls really enjoying the extra space and ability to

change formations and tactics.

Disappointingly in the League we didn’t put any points on the board until

October, albeit this was in style with an 8:0 victory against Bolton.

November saw the ‘infamous’ Cup game against Fillies which resulted in

us losing Millie until March. Obviously most of this delay was down to the

weather, but I still feel disappointed in the way this matter was handled.

AFC Manchester were the team that really surprised everyone winning

the League with just one defeat all season, and we ended our 2013/14

campaign by playing them at home. To go 1:0 up in the first half against

the Champions, was a moment to saviour for both Irvine and I!

All the girls have contributed so much this season and developed

significantly. We’ve made a few positional changes that have

strengthened the squad – Becs in defence is a revelation and Amy F’s

goal against AFC Manchester was superb.

I would like to thank our sponsors, Lee Ashworth Excavations, for their

kind support of the Girls; Irvine, who has acted as both coach and

treasurer, and given great support throughout the year; the parents, for

fetching and carrying and transporting the girls around the North West;

and finally the girls themselves, without whom life would be far less

exciting.

But as the West Lancs team moves to 11v11 next

season we are still on the lookout for new players!

After joining Burnley FC Girls & Ladies in May last year I would firstly like to thank the player and parents of the U13’s as well as everyone else at the club who have helped make this season the most enjoyable in my coaching career. I have been lucky enough after taking over from the previous coach that all players and parents have taken on board what I have tried to do with the age group in terms of how I want the girls to play and how I go about running the team. This is never an easy thing and I am delighted with how things have gone. Since the summer tournaments at Bispham and Skelmersdale last June I feel the u13 girls have made real progress with the girls managing to produce a mid table finish in the league. And despite not challenging for league honours we were mainly competitive in every game played, resulting in some memorable performances and results such as our 1-0 away win at Blackburn CSC and a 4-1 home win over Wigan Athletic. Off the pitch new friendships have been forged with 5 new players joining the age group after 4 had left prior to my arrival. Because of this I feel we have a really strong team spirit that will stand the girls in good stead heading into the 2014/2015 season. This again relates to how friendly the girls have been in my first season and how enjoyable it has been to coach them. The aims for next season are simple, can we keep improving and we will see where it takes us as we head into the summer tourna-ments at Bispham, Skelmersdale and Wigan in June and July. The West Lancs u14s started the season great, winning

their 1st 13 games. We lost league cup final but with the

win the West Lancs league. Winning all but 1 game, a

great achievement as nine of the girls played at u11

when the team finished 5th in the league. It shows what

hard work (and a few good signings) can do.

To top the league win we also became the 1st Burnley

girls team to win the county cup. Beating Blackpool 2-0

at the county ground in Leyland.

Great season girls!

The new North Valley team has also had a great season.

But as the West Lancs team moves to 11v11 next

season we are still on the lookout for new players!

I would like to thank our sponsors, Lee Ashworth Excavations, for their

kind support of the Girls; Irvine, who has acted as both coach and

treasurer, and given great support throughout the year; the parents, for

fetching and carrying and transporting the girls around the North West;

and finally the girls themselves, without whom life would be far less

exciting.
