I was aware that Burra had a swimming pool on the school grounds but until this morning I didn’t realise we also had a skating rink. As I pulled in the carpark the whole top oval glistened with ice. It looked beautiful but I don’t imagine it will do the turf much good. I have some good news and some bad news. First the bad or disappointing news. The Principal panel was completed last week and the position was not filled. It is in the process of being readvertised with a start date of 2020, which hopefully will increase the number of applicants. Now for the good news, at least for me. I was asked if I would stay in the position until the end of the year and I was very happy to accept the offer. I have met many of you but would love to catch up with those I haven’t met. With this in mind, I will be having a coffee catch up after each Primary assembly. It would be great if you can stay or drop in for a coffee. As you are no doubt aware there is a possibility of a teacher’s strike on the 1st of July. As soon as the statewide decision has been made we will inform you as to whether Burra will be closed on that day. Last Tuesday at the Pupil Free day, Burra teachers worked with teachers from the other schools in our Partnership to learn more about creative and critical thinking from our key note speaker Val Westwall. It was also an opportunity for them to reflect on tasks that they have used through the transforming task process. Working with teachers from other schools was beneficial as they shared ideas and received feedback from teachers with a wide range of experience.

Regards, Viv

Week 8 is here already, and for secondary students and teachers it signals the end of Semester 1. We have witnessed fantastic growth across many year levels and in many areas of schooling in the first semester. This growth is the result of a lot of hard work from both students and teachers, working collaboratively to implement structure and learning opportunities. Our Year 12’s are working diligently on their final subjects, while our Year 11 students begin preparing for Year 12 by beginning Research Practices under the expert guidance of Mr Millward. Our Year 10 students have completed their Work Experience and are almost at the end of their PLP with Mr Stewart. A taste of the future as their first SACE subject is completed. In the primary classes there is always lots happening. On Tuesday we had a tabloid sport afternoon which was a huge success, last week we also had a fantastic golf clinic run by Golf SA. There is great enthusiasm among the primary staff about the implementation of Trusting the Count across all primary maths programs, while the Year 1-6 spelling program continues to see significant progression for all students. Students have also been busy creating posters for the Burra Show competition, which is always hotly contested.

This Friday is Staff vs Students Netball - fingers crossed for another staff win. There has been a lot of confidence coming from our senior secondary students about the result going their way, however staff are looking forward to the challenge. Next week is House vs House basketball which provides all students with an opportunity to participate, with results going towards the end of year shield. With the end of semester comes extra workload and stresses for both teachers and students. Exams, reports, new content for semester two and due dates all heighten stress levels. It is important to regulate these added stresses and work together to ensure we are all ‘checking in’ to make sure our peers, colleagues, students and children are coping during this busy time. Below is an excellent image which highlights 50 coping skills for kids which is a great reminder to make time for ourselves and our wellbeing.

OPEN NETBALL 2019 The star netballers of the Burra Community School Year 11/12 class trekked to Balaklava last week for the 2019 Knock-out netball. The girls finished with 6 wins and 2 losses which was an excellent achievement. A huge THANK YOU to Jodie Stockman for umpiring, Kerry Hams for scoring and Louise Edwards for supporting us!
