Last weekends Round up in the Isthmian leagues

By Ian Townsend

AFC Sudbury changed their entire management team earlier this week, apart from one-manager Mark

Morsley. The Yellows surely took confidence from becoming the first side to take anything from Maldon & Tiptree this season, drawing with them in midweek before winning the Velocity Trophy penalty shootout- and they took that performance into the FA Trophy and slayed a giant. Harrow Borough are in fifteenth place in Southern Premier South at present, but had gone a month without victory, losing four of their last five matches- and by full time that record read five out of six, as second half goals from Billy Holland and Sean Marks dumped them out.

Aveley and Bowers & Pitsea needed no introduction before their tie at Parkside, but the visitors have been on a miserable run of late and that continued as the Millers struck three times, all in the first half, to dump Rob Small’s side out of the competition. Alex Akrofi, Jason Raad and an own goal did the damage- which was worse than it sounds given the home side played the majority of the match with ten men.

Basildon United were out next giant killers. The Bees hosted Chesham United, in third place in the Southern Premier South Division and undefeated in three matches- but the visitors couldn’t make it four as two goals right at the end saw them depart the competition after an eight goal thriller! There was only one goal in the first half, and that went to the visitors, but goals in the first ten minutes of the second half saw Basildon turn the game around, Ayo Odukoya and Ernest Okoh finding the net. Adam Vyse made it three-one, and then the visitors scored two to draw the match level with only six minutes to go. That was the signal for Basildon to show their class, and Odukoya, two minutes from time, and Harry Norman a minute later, sealed a famous victory.

Cambridge City kicked off on Friday night against Needham Market, and fell to a three-nil defeat.

We had a Surrey v Essex clash on the High Road as Chipstead took on Canvey Island- and we’ll have another in midweek as they’ll need to do it again after a pulsating three-all draw. Both sides will be wondering how they didn’t win. The Chips took a two goal lead shortly before and just after the break, Kyen Nicholas and Tom Collins finding the Gulls net, but as we headed towards full time Canvey suddenly found form, Tobi Joseph and then a Jason Hallett double, the last of those four minutes from the end. Tom Collins managed an equaliser for Chipstead in the eighty-eighth minute.

Heybridge Swifts, fourth in the North Division, welcomed Premier Division Potters Bar Town. The Scholars departed the FA Cup in midweek at the hands of National League Barnet, but prior to that hadn’t been defeated since August 24th- more than two months ago- and got straight back to winning ways in Essex, Ben Ward-Cochrane and Josh Hutchinson continuing their fine form in front of goal and earning their side victory despite Alex Teniola scoring for Swifts.

We had another all-Isthmian clash at Park Drive, as Maldon & Tiptree- who failed to win in midweek, the first time that had happened all season- hosted Premier Division Cray Wanderers. Wands had played their last three matches away from home and picked up seven points, so certainly wouldn’t have been overawed by the growing reputation of their opposition- but they did find themselves overrun on the field, as a Danny Parish double and a third from Jorome Slew saw the Jammers slay another giant and win once more.

Back to League action now, and Bury Town consolidated their place at the top of the North Division with a three-one win over rejuvenated Romford. The Ram Meadow faithful saw their side extend their lead to five points, Joe White, Jake Chambers-Shaw and Max Maughn scoring Town’s goals, Inesh Sumithran finding the net for Boro.

Grays Athletic could leapfrog Maldon & Tiptree into second place if they defeat Dereham Town at home this afternoon (1400 kick off at Parkside), but it’s worth remembering that the Jammers will have four matches in hand.

Histon are up to eighth, defeating Hullbridge Sports two-one at the Glassworld Stadium despite playing the last thirty five minutes with ten men. Simon Swinton had just put the home side ahead before their goalkeeper, Sam Roach, got his marching orders- but the ten men increased their lead shortly afterwards through Ed Rolph. Joseph Wright made the last twenty minutes interesting by halving the arrears.

Great Wakering Rovers could gave gone second with victory at Brentwood Town, but ended the day fifth after a two-two draw. Abdus Salami gave the hosts a first half lead, but two goals from Josh Wiggins just after the break put Rovers in the driving seat- and they were but moments from that second place when Michael Toner scored from the spot to earn Town a point.

Witham Town are up to thirteenth, a double from George Bugg and a goal from Marcus Bowers enough to give them a three-one win over Felixstowe and Walton United, for whom Miles Powell got a late consolation.

Into the South Central Division, and Harlow Town came from behind to seal a late, late win at Chalfont St Peter- and went top of the table as a result. An own goal and a goal from Luke Illsley sent the Saints in ahead at the break despite Terrell Egbri scoring for Hawks, but after the interval Egbri got another to equalise- and deep into added time Miles Mitchell-Nelson got a winner for the visitors.

Ashford Town got their first League victory of the season at Hertford Town, and they scored five goals in the process. Kelvin Adjei got two of them, Daniel Brown two more, and Tommy Brunton the other as the Tangerines finally shook off a stubborn Hertford, after the home side had come back to level from two-nil and three-two down. Sam Oueniran got two for the hosts, Luke Gymer the other.

We had five matches in the South East Division, and only one home win amongst them. Cray Valley PM climbed to the summit courtesy of a three-two win at Burgess Hill Town, who fell to second bottom as a result. Scott Kirkwood gave the Hillians faithful something to cheer as early as the fifth minute, but the lead lasted only sixty seconds as Denzel Gayle equalised. Matthew A-Warren put Mills ahead in the second half only for Erivaldo Felix to equalise, and then with five minutes remaining Gayle got the winner.

There was a quite remarkable match at Jubilee Field. Hosts Three Bridges went into the break three goals to the good, the wandering Alex Laing and former Wanderer of the Dorking variety, Tom Tolfrey, surely giving them an unassailable lead. It turned out, however, that not only was the lead unassailable, it had been entirely overturned within eighteen minutes of the restart, as Herne Bay got three goals in three minutes- Keiron Campbell, Bradley Stevenson and Zak Ansah in forty eight, forty nine and fifty- before Tushaun Tyreese Walters made it four-three in the sixty third minute. Ansah got his second of the game to make it five-three twelve minutes from time.

Ramsgate climbed the table with a three-one win over Whyteleafe. Ashley Miller, Kane Rowland and Michael Aziaya scored for the Rams, before Mason Saunders-Henry got one back for Leafe with fifteen minutes remaining.

We then had two draws. Hythe Town and Chichester City couldn’t find a goal between them, whilst along the Ken coast Whitstable Town and VCD Athletic got one each, Kelvin Ogboe giving Vickers a first half lead only for Aaron Millbank to equalise twenty minutes from time.

In the Velocity Trophy Chertsey Town and South Park got a point each in a two-two draw, after a last minute goal from Charlie Gee drew the Sparks level. Gee got their first, too, whilst Albie Sheehan-Cozens and Jake Baxter scored for Town. South Park picked up an extra point, winning four-three in the shootout.

The History of Bury Town Football Club - Founded 1872:

Founded in 1872, Bury Town Football Club is one of the oldest Football Club’s in the country and has a proud history dating back over 140 years. The club was founded by Mr William Lake at a meeting in the Suffolk Hotel. The original name of the club was Bury St Edmunds FC and the first committee of the club elected to choose royal blue as the club’s colours. The club took up residence at Kings Road, also know as the Cemetery Road ground, in 1888. Kings Road was the first football ground in East Anglia to operate floodlights when on Monday 12th Jan-uary 1953, the Blues played their first ever floodlit game against Cambridge City in front of 2,105 spectators. A total of 14 bulbs of 1500 watts illuminated the Suffolk skyline for the first time and history was created. The lights were financed by the Bury Town Supporters Club. A notable player for the club in the early days was Reginald De Courtney Welch who appeared as a defender for Bury St Edmunds in 1877. De Courtney Welch was a member of The Wanderers side that won the first ever FA Cup in 1872 and he also played in the first ever official international match for England, against Scotland in November 1872. The club was one of 11 founder members of the Suffolk County Football Association in 1885 and has won the Suffolk Premier Cup on 13 occasions. The clubs name was changed by a vote to Bury Town in September 1885, however 10 years later the members chose to adopt the full name of the town back as the name, before changing to Bury United in 1908. In 1923 the clubs members decided that the name ‘United’ was no longer appropri-ate as there were a number of sides in Bury St Edmunds, and decided to revert to Bury Town, which has remained to this day. The club played in various local leagues until 1935 when it became a founder member of the Eastern Counties League. The club spent a total of 22 consecutive seasons in the Eastern Counties League, finishing as runners up in 1937-38. The Blues claimed the ECL title in the 1963-64 season as part of an historic treble, as they also captured the ECL Knockout Cup and the Suffolk Premier Cup. This success saw the club move to the Metropolitan League and they kicked off their first ever Metropolitan game against Charlton Athletic ‘A’ at Kings Road in front of 1,150 spectators, Bury running out 1-0 winners. The club finished 4th in their first season and also retained the Suffolk Premier Cup.Season 1965-66 was another successful season and another treble haul of trophies as the club stormed to the Metropolitan League title, won the Metropolitan League Cup and the Suffolk Pre-mier Cup again. By this time the club were averaging over 1,000 supporters at their home matches and interest in the club was at an all time high. In 1968, the Blues reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup and drew Third Division side Bournemouth & Boscombe at Kings Road. 3,000 spectators assembled and witnessed Bury hold the Football League side to a goalless draw. The replay saw Bournemouth win through by 3 goals to 0 at Dean Court. The season had further success when the Blues won the Metropolitan League title for a second time.

Today’s Visitors

The clubs success resulted them taking the bold step to join the Southern Football League for the 1971-72 season. The club struggled to adapt to their new surroundings and after five seasons, de-cided to take the decision to re-join the Eastern Counties League, a decision that proved unpopular with supporters. On Wednesday 28th April 1976, Bury Town played their final match at the historic Kings Road ground when West Ham United were the visitors. 1,750 watched on as the sides drew 2-2, and a pitch invasion signalled the end of the Blues spiritual home. Bury Town moved into their current Ram Meadow ground in 1978 and collected the Suffolk Pre-mier Cup as a reward. The Blues spent a total of 11 seasons back in the ECL and their most successful moment of that time came in their final season when the reached the 4th Qualifying Round of the FA Cup and were drawn away at Football Conference leaders Enfield. The sides drew 0-0 at Southbury Road and re-turned to Ram Meadow for the replay, however in front 2,500 supporters, the visitors sneaked home 1-0 to reach the First Round Proper. The 1987-88 season saw ambition return to the club and Bury were promoted to the Southern League. After a few seasons of promising results and large home crowds, the Blues failed to reach the Premier Division, the closest they came was finishing 4th in 1988-89. Years of overspending on players and ground improvements finally caught up and the club drifted into decline as the crowds drifted away. On the 4th May 1996, the Blues were relegated at Redditch United from the Midland Division of the Southern League, back to the Eastern Counties League. The club spent another 10 years in the ECL, and despite some early seasons of struggles, success coincided with the appointment of former Colchester United captain Richard Wilkins to the man-ager’s seat. The club reached the Quarter Final of the FA Vase in 2005 and then the Semi Final in 2006. Crowds rose back up and after two consecutive runners up spots in the Premier Division of the ECL, the club were promoted to the Isthmian League for the first time in their history. The stay lasted two seasons and after adjusting to a higher level in 2006-07 with a 17th place finish, the following season saw the Blues finish in 7th position. The FA re-organisation in 2008 saw Bury moved into the Southern League for a third spell of mem-bership. A successful campaign saw Bury finish in 7th position in the Midland Division table, reach the First Round Proper of the FA Cup, losing 4-2 at Alfreton Town, and reach the Semi Final of the Southern League Cup, however in 2009-10, Bury Town clinched the Southern League Midland Di-vision Championship on the final day of the season with a 3-0 home victory over Marlow in front of 1,550 supporters. The Blues piped Hitchin Town to the title, scoring 115 goals during the campaign and collecting 102 points to gain promotion. Another move across the pyramid saw the Blues re-join the Ryman League for the 2010-11 season, entering the Premier Division. A great season saw Bury finish third, but go out of the play off’s to Lowestoft Town. There was however some silver-ware for the boardroom as Bury defeated Needham Market 2-0 in the final of the Suffolk Premier Cup at Portman Road. 20011-12 saw the club lift the Ryman League Cup with a victory over East Thurrock United and again finished in the play off places, but lost out to AFC Hornchurch in the Semi Final. 2014-15 saw our spell in the Premier Division come to an end after 5 years with relegation to Division One North. In our last two seasons back in Division One North we have finished in 13th and 11th place. 2017-18 saw the Blues finish 9th and reach the final of the Suffolk Premier Cup.

NORMAL VISION

COLOUR-BLIND SIMULATION (PROTANOPIA)

Approximately one in 12 men inherit colour blindness. It’s carried on the X-chromosome, so only one in 200 women inherit the condition.

It can be a real issue in football, whether you’re watching, playing, managing or officiating. Imagine not being able to tell the difference between kit colours and how that would affect you, your teammate or your child.

There are three types of colour blindness – and myriad colour combinations which cause problems. The common perception that colour-blind people only confuse reds and greens is a myth.

The FA has been working closely with UEFA and specialist organisation Colour Blind Awareness to highlight the issue. The intention is to positively influence decision-makers at every level of the game and improve the experience of colour-blind people – whatever their involvement in football.

This work has seen the production of a comprehensive guidance booklet. You can read and download it at www.TheFA.com/colourblindness

And please visit the Colour Blind Awareness website: colourblindawareness.org for ways you can help maximise awareness.

Together, let’s make sure football’s future is FOR ALL.

ON THIS DAYDiego Alfredo Lugano Morena (born 2 November 1980)

Diego is a Uruguayan former professional footballer who played as a central defender.Nicknamed Tota, Lugano played for a number of clubs in South America and Europe, including Plaza Colonia, Club Nacional de Football, São Paulo, Fenerbahçe, Paris Saint-Germain, Malaga and West Bromwich Albion, before finishing his career with a second spell at Brazilian club São Paulo, where he now works as an administrator.

Lugano made 95 appearances for the Uruguay national team, captaining his country at two FIFA World Cups. He was named best captain at the 2010 tournament.Born to Alfredo Lugano and Diana Morena in Canelones, Canelones Department, Lugano started playing football for his hometown club Club Atlético Libertad, like his father Alfredo. In December 1998, he played his first match with the first-team squad of Libertad, becoming league champions with the club at the age of 18 years. From Libertad, in 1999, Lugano transferred to Club Nacional de Football in Montevideo. Three years later, Lugano was loaned out to Plaza Colonia for the duration of the playing season.

On 27 August 2011, Fenerbahçe announced Lugano was leaving the club to join Paris Saint-Germain in the French Ligue 1 for a fee worth €3 million. His first season in France, however, ended poorly and Lugano made just 12 appearances, mostly being cut out of the side due to injury and poor form.

On 2 August 2013, Lugano joined Premier League club West Bromwich Albion on a two-year contract. He scored his first goal for West Brom on 20 January 2014, heading in an equalizer in a 1-1 home draw with Everton. On 17 May 2014, West Bromwich announced the release of five players of their squad, including Lugano.

Charles Hubert Itandje (born 2 November 1982) Charles is a professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for French club Versailles.Itandje signed for Liverpool in August 2007, as cover for Pepe Reina thus allowing Scott Carson to join Aston Villa on a season-long loan to play regularly. Itandje said of his move: “At Liverpool there is a very good keeper who has been there three years. I am clearly going to be number 2. But, there are 60 matches a season and it is planned that I will play the League Cup and FA Cup.” He made his first team debut for Liverpool in a League Cup match

against Reading on 25 September, which Liverpool won 4–2, and in total, made three League Cup appearances and four FA Cup appearances for Liverpool in the 2007–08 season. He was made available for transfer in the summer of 2008 after Liverpool signed Diego Cavalieri but turned down a move to Galatasaray. He made no further appearances for Liverpool and by January 2009 was seeking to leave the club.On 30 June 2010, Itandje returned to Liverpool. His contract with Liverpool was due to expire in January 2011 and he was at least fifth in the goalkeeping order, behind Pepe Reina, Brad Jones, Péter Gulácsi and Martin Hansen. Upon his return, he was criticised by John Aldridge for “collecting his wages” rather than looking for a different club where he would have a chance of playing. In total for Liverpool, Itandje played 7 times. After the memorial service for the twentieth anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster in April 2009, complaints were made by members of the congregation that Itandje had been laughing and behaving inappropriately during the ser-vice. His actions were condemned by the Liverpool hierarchy, who stated that they would be seeking to impose the maximum punishment possible. Itandje apologised to the grieving families and to Liverpool fans for his behaviour and was suspended by the club for 14 days. He did not play another game, at reserve or first team level, for the club. n an exclusive interview with Le Journal du Dimanche, Itandje spoke out about the Hillsborough incident for the first time. He said when he saw himself laughing on television, he described this as “awkward and unwelcome.” As a result of this, Itandje stated the club never supported him for this and the club supporters started to threaten him saying: “Do not walk in the street, you’ll get mugged.” His increasing stress caused him to have eczema on his hand.
