Welcome to the Spring issue of the Burwood Bulletin.

Our volunteer team has once again been working hard to bring our readers stories about the interesting people and events that make up our great community. The experience of local students walking the Kokoda Trail, I think, is inspiring; we have another instalment from Kathy Clarkson in our Birds in Burwood series; and I hope you enjoy Brooke’s (“A Kid in Burwood”) contribution, now appearing as “Brooke’s Corner”.

Indeed, there are so many interesting stories and events in the district that we have had to push some stories back to the next issue. Please keep letting us know all the great things that are going on in your part of the neighbourhood.

Michael Donnelly: Artist, Illustrator and Teacher

but perceptive approach was very encouraging. Upon completing my post-grad course at VCA I was invited to take part in a new mentoring program and was paired with William (Bill) Kelly, a former dean of the College, who has a strong human rights/social justice bent to his work, but is a very gentle and thoughtful teacher.I was also fortunate in working alongside a number

of very generous and committed artists in my post-grad course that led to ongoing and encouraging friendships.What is your irst source of inspiration?My faith and belief in a God who is deeply and lovingly involved in his creation, is connected to it, and connects all parts of it together. hose connections, the relationship between all things, provide me with the stuf of my work.Scale is a really interesting and diicult topic. How do you achieve a good scale?

I have always made pictures the size I thought they needed to be. As much as possible, though, I try to keep one dimension to less than the four-foot width of my Tarago’s back door.

What do you love to do when you are not painting?Reading, bike riding, watching detective shows on the

ABC and working with children who are blind, or have low vision, in my paid teaching work.

Do you have a favourite book that you return to for inspiration?

he Bible, Joyce’s Ulysses, Dylan homas’s Under Milk Wood, Gerard Manly Hopkins’s and Les Murray’s poetry … and also music – jazz, opera, sacred and gospel, folk, rock, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Ravel, Donizetti – depends on when and what I am doing.

What are your favourite galleries in Melbourne, and gallery/galleries in the world that you visit?

In Melbourne: Heide Museum of Modern Art in Bulleen, the McClelland Gallery and Sculpture Park, Langwarrin; and, in the past, Realities Gallery, Roar 2 Studios, and the NGV before it was remodelled. Overseas: Kettle’s Yard in Cambridge with its celebration of early 20th century British art, Fondation Maeght near St-Paul-de-Vence, the Musée Picasso in Paris and the British Museum.

My signature Zoneone Arts question – what are the most important design elements?

Originally I would have said just line, tone, and then form with my drawing work. Colour has become increasingly important to me in my painting.

How do you see your art evolving?Very slowly, consolidating what has come before.

Working in several ields of the arts, Ashburton resident Michael Donnelly has since 1984 held several solo exhibitions, and participated in group shows in Australia and the USA. Michael complements his art practice with work as a visiting teacher with the vision impaired and in the Support Skills Program at the Statewide Vision Resource Centre.

Deborah Blakeley, of Zoneone Arts, spoke with Michael.How would you

describe your style?I have variously

described my “style” as igurative, expressionist, surreal, narrative. I’m not sure I particularly have one: more that my work has elements of all that I have mentioned.

What art qualiications do you have? How did you decide to become an artist?

I have a degree in Art Education from what was the Alexander Mackie or City Art Institute in Sydney from the early ‘80s and a post-grad Diploma in Fine Art: Painting from the VCA (Victorian College of the Arts) in Melbourne from the mid-’90s.

I spent much of my childhood drawing and making stuf in and out of school. In the last years of primary school I discovered that there were such things as artists and galleries, and then in high school I had a couple of enthusiastic art teachers who modelled a possible way forward.

Looking back at your irst art, what painting knowledge do you wish you had then?

I actually came to painting fairly late on, after years of focusing on my drawing practice. My introduction to painting in under-grad was marred, I feel, by lecturers who insisted on painting meaning only one way of operating and perceiving things, so I shifted across to ceramics and printmaking disciplines where there seemed to be more freedom in what you made and could explore, despite the technical rules. By the end of my art ed course I was particularly engrossed by the act of drawing, which pulled together some of my primary interests in form and iguration from ceramics and printmaking. Once I realised that it was ine to paint the way I wished to paint, I started exploring it again.

Is there an artist who has inluenced you?I have been inluenced by many artists over time.

hese include John Brack, Andrew Wyeth, Brett Whitely, Donald Friend, Stanley Spencer, David Hockney, Lucien Freud, Henri Matisse, Henry Moore, William Robinson, to name a few.

Do you have a mentor or have [you ever] had a mentor?In my art making, two “mentors” have been signiicant.

In the late ‘80s/early ‘90s I often attended life drawing through the National Gallery of Victoria Society, and the classes were tutored by Chris Dyson, whose laid-back

In January 2011, Xiaomin Yu took over the Ashwood Greengrocer and Variety Store in

Warrigal Rd. Xiaomin came out from China with her family in October 2009, and after arriving in Australia decided to adopt the name “Emily”. She now lives in Hughesdale, and her son “Evan” is studying engineering at Monash University. Both he and Emily’s husband help in the shop whenever they can.

Emily is pleased to have her own business in Ashwood. Talking with customers, she says, is helping her learn English and become more familiar with some of the new customs. Emily would like to thank all the people who support her business, and also looks forward to welcoming new customers to her shop.

“It is always a lovely day and everyone has fun and the children enjoy it.” With at least a thousand children joining the event, this year was the irst time that the Snow Tube was installed in Ashburton. Kids slid down a giant inlatable tube, landing in fresh snow and playing, often for the irst time, in its icy wetness.

he joy of the children marked the day in a profound way. he snow reignited the kids’ love for the outdoors. hey want to be outside, enjoy it, and play with it. Nine- year-old Sadie said, “this is the best experience that ever happened in my life”.

A natural miracle brought snow to Ashburton on 9 August in 1951 and snow came again 61 years later

in Ashburton shopping centre with the help of Mt Buller.Mt Buller delivered tonnes of snow and the “Snow

Tube” to Ashburton turning the shopping area into a snow play zone for kids and families.

It all started six years ago when Liz Webb saw on the TV that Mt Buller had brought snow down for the zoo. She thought, “hey must be able to bring the snow down to Lexia St too”. She rang them, and they were willing to have a go.

Ms Webb admits that she was not inspired by the miracle snow 61 years ago. She says that she was instead inspired by the joy of playing with snow. “It is always fun to do things to be a bit diferent, and it was fun to have snow on the street,” she said.

Gloria Jean’s Coffees Arrive in BurwoodJarrod, who was born and bred in Burwood, returns

to the area after 25 years of coffee experience and management in Victoria and interstate. So he’s “bean” around, you might say! Jarrod’s Burwood background has created strong community interest and he wishes to incorporate this into the business through sponsorship of local schools and clubs.

Indeed, Jarrod has already donated prizes and gifts for local Mother’s Day activities, and funds to the local RSPCA raised through the Cupcake Day initiative held in August, to which 50c from every drink bought from Gloria Jean’s Coffees was contributed.

Jarrod Montigue is the friendly and welcoming owner/manager of the new Gloria Jean’s coffee house at the

Burwood One Shopping Centre. He has high hopes for the newly refurbished Kmart shopping complex at the corner of Burwood Highway and Blackburn Rd. Jarrod says that Gloria Jean’s Coffees is a completely new experience for the Burwood area. His cosy coffee house is located in the corner of the Food Court, opposite the new Coles supermarket entrance (shop number G50).


Wattle Park Primary: Growing for the FutureThe garden class has not only improved students’ practical

skills, it has also contributed to their academic learning.

Difficult words such as “guacamole” and “tabouli” have been

added to spelling lists. And there has also been plenty of

counting. “My expectation is

that kids’ measurement results

will improve in mathematics,”

said Gayle. It is just an

expectation at this stage, but

Gayle is able to point out

several examples where students

use mathematics in the kitchen.

Bigger questions had to be

considered for the building

program. Gayle said staff were

constantly thinking about the

future when designing learning

spaces and activities. “What’s

important for kids to know

so that they have employment

in 2020 or 2030?” Gayle said.With modern facilities and

innovative learning programs, the future looks bright for the

staff and students at Wattle Park Primary.

In a short space of time, Wattle Park Primary has

undergone some significant changes. The past 18 months

has seen the construction of two new buildings and the

refurbishment of another; with

more redevelopment scheduled.

Principal Gayle Cope describes

the building program as a

“journey” for the school and its

384 students.

Wattle Park Primary was

founded in 1914 and has been

an educational starting point for

several generations of children.

The new building designs were

born out of a desire to develop

the ideal learning environment

for current and future students.

“We’re trying to create learning

spaces and learning activities

for kids now that are relevant to

them,” explains Gayle.

One topic particularly relevant to children today is

sustainability. Wattle Park Primary has its own sustainability

team as part of the Scarecrow program. The group comprises

student monitors from Prep to Grade 6, who help develop

sustainable initiatives – include composting, holding rubbish-

free lunches and placing stickers above light switches to

remind students and staff about energy conservation.

The Scarecrow program is not a new initiative, but it has

been greatly enhanced by the school’s redevelopment. The

new structures include a building with eight classrooms and

a gymnasium which houses a basketball court, stage, music

room, community meeting room and canteen. The old canteen

and boys’ toilets were converted into a kitchen classroom.

The kitchen has enhanced the Scarecrow program. “[The

kitchen] made it so much easier,” says John Davey, who

coordinates the program with fellow teacher Robyn Gilmour.

Once a week, students from grades 3 and 4 take part in a

kitchen garden class, which encourages them to get actively

involved in their learning. They participate in one-hour

gardening sessions. Vegetable patches, fruit orchards and a

chicken shed are all located in the school’s extensive gardens,

and the students plant, harvest and learn about seasonal

produce with a gardener. This is followed by a 90-minute

cooking session in the kitchen with a specialist cook.

Luckily for parents, the children are bringing what they

have learnt home. The garden class provides them with skills

and knowledge they can put into practice at home. “The

conversation I’m having with parents is that kids are trying

foods they’ve never tried before. They’re eating vegetables and

they’re wanting to cook at home,” Gayle said.

mentally prepare for the challenge and to support them while they are trekking. To say the trail is “walked” understates the endurance and perseverance required to traverse the treacherous trail, and that is why the teens spent four months prior to their departure preparing themselves physically and mentally for the challenge that awaited them in PNG. he teenagers are students at local Boroondara schools, including Camberwell High, Canterbury Girls High and Camberwell Girls Grammar. Previous participants spoke at the schools about their experience of walking the trail and how their lives had been afected as a result. he stories of travel, adventure and history ignited an interest in many students, including the girls with whom I spoke. Some cited the idea of gaining itness and an interest in geography and biology as a motivating factor in applying. Interested applicants undergo an interview process that aims to determine who is suitable for the trek. he commitment requirements are high, so the leaders aim to ensure that all who are accepted are able to commit to and complete the training sessions and the required written work. he

purpose of the training sessions, which include early morning gym sessions, bushwalking and written work, is to foster a culture of unison, team spirit and leadership among the teens. he tasks were tackled by the team

with gusto and enthusiasm. Kate, a Year 11 student, said that even though the training meant that her social life sufered, she looked forward to each session and enjoyed the friendships formed. Some girls experienced moments of hesitation. Emmalyn, another Year 11 student, said she felt at one stage that she had taken on too many commitments. However, the drive to complete the challenge and experience Kokoda helped them continue.

he girls described the arrival at PNG as “exciting”, “nerve-wracking” and “unreal”. he teens and their leaders were supported by a group of 22 local porters who assisted by carrying food supplies and tents. he team found the porters to be encouraging in times of diiculty and stress, and also as great after-dinner dancing partners! During their week-long trek, the team were confronted by rough terrain, extreme weather conditions and physical and emotional demands. Kathleen, a Year 11 student at Camberwell Girls Grammar, said that in times of diiculty she found motivation and inspiration by thinking of the Diggers who had tackled the trail under harsher and more dangerous conditions. Ingniting Teen Spirit on the Kokoda Trailby Rosemary Feneziani

T he Kokoda Trail, in Papua New Guinea, was the site of many bitter and bloody engagements

fought by Japanese and Australian forces between July and November in 1942. PNG then comprised two Australian territories, known as Papua and New Guinea. he campaign to stop Japanese forces advancing and taking over Port Moresby – and subsequently invading Australia – was won, but not without the bloodshed of many soldiers. he young Australians who died during these months, most in their late teens, are now buried in a cemetery outside Port Moresby.

he ighting raged in appalling conditions in an unforgiving and harsh landscape. he trail is a 96 km winding track that is only passable on foot. Its topography includes a peak altitude of 2250m, dense jungle with vine-entwined trees and rapidly lowing rivers. It starts 50 km east of Port Moresby.

he signiicance of the Kokoda Trail and the events that took place there holds an important place in Australia’s wartime history. It is a place that symbolises determination, courage, endurance and camaraderie. It also has become a site that many young Australians are keen to visit – to actively explore and learn what the trail represents. Many believe walking the trail is a way of honouring and showing respect to the fallen Diggers.

In July of this year, a group of 12 local teenagers (consisting of two boys and 10 girls) aged between 15 and 17, lew to PNG along with four adult leaders and successfully hiked the track. I was fortunate to meet ive of the teens and one of their leaders, Sally, and learned more about their interest and desire to visit Kokoda. Sally has been a volunteer leader with the Kokoda Challenge Youth Program for two years. he youth program is a part of the Kokoda Challenge Association, which originated in Queensland. Sally’s role is focused on helping the teens physically and

Railway Stations Yield Some Secretsby Susan Webster

On Tuesday 31 August, I walked along the Anniversary Trail between Toorak Rd and High

St in Ashburton. On the way I jotted down some historical facts from the information boards that are near the Burwood and Ashburton stations. A lot of readers have mentioned that they particularly enjoy our historical articles.

he Ashburton StationAshburton station was opened on 30 May 1890

under the name of Norwood (taken from Norwood Rd – now Toorak Rd) as part of the short-lived Outer Circle railway line. A scant six months later it was renamed Ashburton, for Ashburton Terrace in County Cork, Ireland. In 1895 it became the southern terminus of the Outer Circle, with the closure of the Ashburton to Oakleigh section. he Camberwell – Ashburton section was closed in May 1897, but reopened a little over a year later, initially as part of the Deepdene Dasher steam service.

he Burwood StationBurwood Station was opened on the same day as

Ashburton, and rejoiced in the name Hartwell, after nearby Hartwell House. his was rather confusing, as the current Hartwell station was then called Hartwell Hill, and many people got of at the wrong station. he station was inally renamed Burwood on 1 August 1909, with Hartwell Hill becoming Hartwell. he name came from Burwood House, which was built by Sir William Palmer in 1852. In 1924, the Camberwell – Ashburton line, of which Burwood is a part, was electriied. he line was then extended to become the present Alamein line in 1948.

This year, a special display of crown

replicas, created by Richard Cadden, on loan

for the exhibition. These will be displayed in

the main hall.

Demonstrations are held throughout the

weekend. They include copper enamelling,

chain mail, silver work, carving, wire

wrapping and faceting. Gem identification

and jewellery cleaning are also available.

Many visitors to the exhibition stay all day.

Morning and afternoon teas are available, as

well as lunches that include a sausage sizzle.

Waverley Gem Club members enjoy all

aspects of lapidary. Field trips are held,

to fossick for gems. Some stones can be

faceted, carved, or made into cabochons and then set in silver

and gold.

There is also a mineral group for members who like to

collect specimens and leave them in their natural state. This is

a fascinating aspect of the hobby – looking at the wonders of

the earth, especially through the microscope.

Waverley Gem Club Shows Jewels in its Crown

Waverley Gem Club is holding its

annual exhibition from 10am to

5pm on 22 and 23 September, the first

weekend of the school holidays. It will

be held at Brandon Park Community

Centre, 645 Ferntree Gully Rd, Glen

Waverley, behind the fire station.

There will be gem traders from

around Victoria and some from

interstate, as well as a pearl trader from

the Cook Islands. They sell jewellery,

gems, minerals and equipment for the

hobby of lapidary.

During the year, club members are

busy creating items of jewellery. These

are individual creations. Gemstones

are set in silver and gold, some wire

wrapped, and there are also beaded

items. Faceted stones and opals are also on sale. And a large

selection of minerals, rocks and slabs ready for a lapidarist

to work on, are available.

Activities for children include a quiz about gemstones. On

completion they choose a prize from a selection of mineral

items. There is also a very popular fossicking event for all ages.

Burwood RSL’s Fighting Force

It was not until Aaron had moved away from home and Yvonne had retired from primary teaching that she decided to concentrate on the game of snooker herself.

She started playing 8-Ball pennant competition at the Burvale Hotel but soon moved on to snooker and billiards at the St Mary’s Recreation Club in South Camberwell and got herself a coach (Graeme Walters, who is still her coach). It wasn’t long before Yvonne discovered the Over-55 RSL competition where she could try out her newly-developed skills.

She joined Box Hill RSL irst then transferred to Mitcham RSL where she became captain of the team. She remained there for about eight years before moving to Burwood RSL, on home soil as it were, and has remained there ever since. (Continued page 29...)

Tucked behind Burwood Village on the corner of Hyslop and Myrniong

streets you will ind the Burwood sub-branch of the RSL (Returned & Services League), re-established here in March 1992 after moving from its Toorak Rd premises. You may spot the lagpole and cenotaph in front of this rather unobtrusive building as you pass by.

Behind these doors lies a hidden treasure trove. A small band of enthusiastic members keeps the Burwood sub-branch of the RSL going. And what unites them in camaraderie each week is ‘war’ in the form of billiards and snooker matches. Burwood has a secret weapon in the traditionally all-male RSL Over 55 Billiards & Snooker Competition–the only female competitor in the entire competition, Yvonne Mahoney!he competition, comprising 13 suburban teams, is played in various RSL venues around Melbourne on Tuesday mornings. Matches are always followed by lunch, which cools the mood of hot competition. he Burwood team practices and competes at the Burwood RSL which houses two full-size billiard tables. Competition is ierce. And Yvonne is one of the iercest. She is well accepted amongst the men, but there is no mercy shown. She has to be as tough as they are.

Yvonne’s family history of the game is as interesting as her participation. If you know anything of the game you may have heard of Yvonne’s son, Aaron Mahoney, a prominent Australian and Victorian Snooker champion. Yvonne and her husband, John, spent much time grooming their son, from the time he started “potting around” at the age of eight, to his amazing win at age 11 in the Men’s 8-Ball “Knockout” competition at the Waltzing Matilda Hotel in 1989 when Aaron “scooped the pool”, as it were, with prize money of $120!

Converting their backyard shed at Monbulk into a billiard room with a full-size table saw the launch of Aaron’s Snooker career from youngest Victorian champion of the Men’s 8-Ball competition.

By 1995, Yvonne and John had set up the Victorian Cueist Association for junior competition and moved to the Burwood area and built a new billiard room to house the table plus Aaron’s numerous trophies.

nocturnal feeding habits and daytime roosting they are hard to glimpse, hidden amongst the leaves on a branch of a tree. Even perched on street wires, their dark bodies are well camouflaged in the night, and the silence of their flight can easily be mistaken for that of a fruit-bat. Usually alone or in pairs, and maybe with a chick or two, the tawny frogmouth is one of the most discrete of our native birds. The wood-like, grey-brown feathers blend so well with the branch it sits on that you have to search carefully to find it, sitting motionless with yellow eyes watching intently down the “nose” of its wide “frog mouth” grey beak.

The tawny frogmouth does have an owl-like hoot that is reminiscent of a deep-throated drumming sound repeated monosyllabically. The adult pair appears to call “oom” to each other. It sounds like an echo – barely discernible at night unless you know what you are listening for.

The “tawny” loves secluded tree foliage in the daytime and can be found in the local parks – where I found the one photographed here. The tell-tale sign of the presence of a tawny in your neighbourhood is a large splash of white droppings left on your driveway or footpath!

So if you have not seen or heard any of these indigenous Australian birds in Burwood, then take a closer look in the parks and gardens near your home or when you are out and about. You will be surprised by what you see right here on your doorstep.

Don’t Feed the Birds!

The Department of Sustainability and

Environment is calling on Melburnians to avoid

feeding wild birds following reports that it could

assist the spread of bacteria among native

parrots. Since March, there have been over 200

reported sick or dead Rainbow Lorikeets in the

eastern and north-eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

Feeding of wild birds may actually endanger

healthy birds and the public are advised not to

feed them. Rainbow Lorikeets have a simple

digestive system that is suited to their natural diet

of native lowering plants and insects. There is suficient food in the environment for wild birds; they do not require supplementary feeding.

Parrots, Cockies and Tawny FrogmouthsHas anyone noticed the great variety of birds

frequenting the Burwood area in recent years? Certainly, my area near Gardiner’s Creek sees many more native species than previously. This is perhaps due to the council’s replanting, some years back, of indigenous vegetation along the Linear Park of Gardiner’s Creek. The many trees, now mature, attract a variety of native birds.

We in the Burwood district are the winners, with so many colourful parrots feeding in eucalypts at different times of the day. The chirping, chattering lorikeets can often be heard as they feed on flowering gums in the sunlight, flitting amongst the leaves and being impossible to capture on camera! It is a rare treat to actually spot one of the small musk lorikeets – recognisable by their red forehead and “earmuffs” that cap bright green bodies with a hint of yellow under each wing. So easily camouflaged amongst variegated gum leaves!

Frequently seen too, is the brightly-coloured rainbow lorikeet, which arrives in large numbers in the early morning and late afternoon to feed high in gum trees. They are not to be missed with their brilliance of colour and noisy, shrill screeching in flight and whilst feeding! Nesting in the hollow of a tree between August and December, as witnessed last year at the front of my house, the rainbow lorikeet couple will prepare their nest by chipping out the wood to make a hidden cavity for breeding and rearing their young.

Since the widespread bushfires in Victoria, it is evident that native species of birds have resorted to entering Melbourne city precincts in search of food sources. Some people may remember seeing a pair of yellow-tailed black cockatoos flying in and around Gardiner’s Creek reserves. It was magnificent to see these two large, graceful birds with the yellow plumage underneath their fanned-out tails revealed in flight and to hear their distinctive, plaintive cry heralding their presence overhead. After the Black Saturday bushfires of 2009, two such birds appeared in the Burwood–Ashwood area apparently searching for a safe haven, but were constantly chased away by magpies and magpie larks who resented the intrusion! Unfortunately, they only persisted for a few days before seeking new horizons – hopefully with greater success, for they are one of Eastern Australia’s rare beauties.

Another native bird often seen all the time around the Burwood area and habitually in the suburbs of Melbourne (according to a Healesville Sanctuary expert) is the tawny frogmouth. Often mistaken for an owl, with its nocturnal movements and haunting owl hoot, it is actually a member of the night jar family. Although you may rarely, if ever, see one, they are actually widespread and common over most of Australia. Because of their

he idea of boutique recycling came to Marie through her training and expert knowledge in the ield of chemistry. For Marie is a science graduate and educator who still continues lecturing at university level today! And Marie is passionate about conserving our environment. What better background to have to understand and care about the processes of garment manufacture?

Marie has become greatly concerned about the increasing use of dangerous chemicals and child labour in overseas countries for the treatment and manufacture of mass-produced cheap materials used in the clothing industry for sale to Western markets. She is also worried about associated toxic waste seeping into world river systems and afecting the environment and food sources. Marie thought that there had to be something better than that. And there is: the recycling of quality designer items of clothing that still look good and were made mostly from natural ibres.

Clarice Dixon Reaches 91 Reincarnation Boutiqueby Jean Hadler

Clarice has been part of the Ashburton Bowling Club since before it even opened in 1956.

In 1954 Clarice, with some other ladies, worked in the shed at the far end of the bowling green providing sandwiches and tea for the men who were digging ditches and levelling the green. One of these men was Clarice’s late husband, Alan, a war veteran. For two years he and

others came after work to prepare the ground for the future Bowling Club.

Clarice left school at the age of 13, putting her age up to 15 to become an apprentice to a seamstress in Elsternwick, earning just six shillings a week. Much later in life she applied her skills on a craft stall at her beloved bowling club. For over 30 years she made thousands of dollars for the club with this stall, and at one stage was Lady President for two years.

Clarice’s bowling this season has been curtailed owing to a knee replacement. Even so, she is still actively involved with the indoor bowls group and loves to take part in their card sessions. Her name can be seen on a board at the club, as a mark of recognition “for her many years of outstanding service at the Bowling Club Inc.”.

I wonder how many other clubs could boast of a member who has been part of a club for 58 years? Congratulations, Clarice, for your many achievements at the Ashburton Bowling Club.

Here is a recipe from the popular Soup Cook Book: Broccoli, Potato and Bacon Soup by Ruth CruttendenIngredients:1 large head of broccoli, broken up, stalks chopped2 medium potatoes cut into equal pieces1 large onion, chopped2 cloves of garlic, minced4 rashers of bacon1 sprig of thyme1 litre of chicken stock1 tablespoon creamSalt and pepper, parsley

Method:Sweat broccoli, potato, bacon, onion and garlic in a little oil until the onion is soft. Add stock, thyme, salt and pepper. Simmer 25–30 minutes. Blend, stir in cream. Serve withchopped parsley.

Ashburton Meats and Ashburton Community Bank ® have combined to help a local children’s charity, the Edge Community Fund, with donations of over $3000.

Last year, Ashburton Meats came up with the idea of asking its customers for favourite soup recipes. Customers, who love the friendly service along with the meat, swamped the butcher with tried-and-tested recipes. The result was the Ashburton Soup Cook Book, published by Ashburton Meats and sold across the counter.

The proits from the book, $1230, were donated to the Edge Community Fund, which regularly is called upon by local schools and community organisations to help families who are struggling with the costs of ensuring their kids go to kinder, participate fully at school, or join local sports clubs or organisations such as scouts and guides.

The soup book proved so popular that a second edition was called for and the Ashburton Community Bank stepped in and funded the printing cost of about $500.

The Edge Community Fund is the “charity of choice” of the Ashburton Traders Association, and earlier this year their annual rafle, with prizes donated by local traders, raised over $2500. The Ashburton Community Bank matched the rafle receipts with a donation of $1500 making the total from the rafle over $4000.

Ashburton Meats won the John Reddish Service Excellence Award for a Boroondara business providing the most outstanding customer service in 2011. However, it is not resting on its laurels and has launched a second recipe campaign among its customers. Responses are coming in and it expects to publish a second book soon – Best Local Casserole Recipes. Once again any proits will go to a local charity.

he Council Community Service representatives continued to attend meetings, providing invaluable assistance and support from Camberwell, Box Hill and Waverley. In January 1985, the steering committee distributed 3000 questionnaires in Burwood, seeking information about the kinds of activities and interests householders would like from a Neighbourhood House. Valuable feedback was obtained. he irst Burwood Neighbourhood House committee was elected on 28 May 1985.

Finally in May of 1987 advice was received from the Box Hill Council that the house at 1 Church Street had been made available as the long-awaited Burwood Neighbourhood House.

I invite all past participants, councillors, committee members and tutors to join us in celebrating 25 years of community service on 28 September at 1pm.

1.8 Million Reasons for Communities to Celebrate!

25 years for Burwood’s Neighbourhood House!

In 1981, a group of interested women decided to look into setting up a community centre. hey had visited Nunawading Community House and felt a

similar resource was needed for Burwood. Great support was received from the Burwood Sub-Branch RSL, and in particular from the then President, Mr Charles Poulton. he use of the branch premises was the start of activities of a neighbourhood house. On 4 July 1984, with the strong support of Mrs Estelle von Sturmer (Neighbourhood Development Co-ordinator employed by the Camberwell Council), a public meeting was held at which it was established that the committee would pursue the establishment of a permanent Neighbourhood House.

Each of the four productions each year has a season of 13 performances, with the addition of a Charity Preview (the night before the oicial opening),

where the performance is given to a local benevolent group as a fundraiser.

Over the years a One-act Play Season and a One-act Play Festival have been added to the season and we are looking to the future by ofering acting and technical workshops where interested people who have no experience can learn skills that are needed to become involved.See page 46 or visit www.peridot.com.au for more information.

Peridot has a Dramatic History

Peridot heatre Company is a non-professional company operating in Mount Waverley. We perform

an annual season of four full-length plays and various one-act plays including drama, comedy, farce and lots more. he Company is based at the Unicorn heatre, Mt Waverley, a comfortable and intimate theatre that accommodates just over 200 people.

Peridot heatre’s irst production was in August 1985. he name “Peridot” comes from the precious green gemstone, which is one of the birthstones for the month of August. he irst Peridot production, Moving by Stanley Price, was performed at the Monash High School heatrette in Clayton. he venue, however, proved to be unsuitable for a variety of reasons, and in November 1986 Peridot moved to its current home at the Unicorn heatre.

Members provide a welcoming atmosphere before and after the shows and assist with building sets, making costumes and providing support in many other ways. Volunteers and new members are always welcome!

Burwood Village Full of Hidden Treasures!On Saturday, 28 July, Toorak Rd was abuzz with the

long-awaited opening of new delicatessen and café, he Rustic Table. Mirella and Massimo Dipoi have worked extremely hard remodelling the shop, with a view to becoming the purveyors of ine foods and cofee.

he day was a family afair, with Mirella and Massimo’s children helping in the new family venture, and the delicious cofee from Café Trombetta available for visitors to try, on the house. Massimo was busy all day providing scrumptious pork sausages to sample, perfect for a family dinner any night of the week.

he Milk & Munga, a long-standing business of the Burwood Village, welcomes new owners George and Marj. Co-owner, George Kosmo, grew up in the area and attended Wattle Park High School, so he has fond childhood memories of the Village. He says, “Burwood Village is really changing and it is fantastic to be back working in the local area.” Make sure you call in and say hello!

All Aboard… for the Melbourne Tramways Band’s 73rd annual season of recitals at Wattle Park. Possibly Melbourne’s oldest band (established in

1888), the Tramways Band has provided free public concerts, without interruption, since the dark days of 1940. he Band struggles inancially, but has been able to continue with the support of sponsor, Yarra Trams, for the past decade.

“It’s probably fair to say that the commitment to the Wattle Park concerts keeps the Band going,” says Band President, James Tulloch. “Although we are able to present multiple ensembles, from full brass band to smaller combos and the 18 piece Tramways Big Band, engagements are hard to come by in tight times. Unfortunately, the public think of the band as some sort of government entity, and don’t realise that we are a community organisation relying on performance fees in order to survive.”

Historic Tram Fleet on Track in Hawthornthe irst conductresses in 1942 and other members of his family worked at workshops as conductors or drivers. Another volunteer, Geof Brown, was a tram conductor himself.

The Hawthorn Tram Depot building may not be noticed by passers-by but is a pleasant surprise once you step inside. One can see the entire history of Melbourne’s famous public transport in one room.

Stepping into each tram is like going back in time- the old and uncomfortable looking seats, sometimes wooden and sometimes plastic and the old advertisement posters stuck on the walls, giving away what year it may be, adding to the time travel-like experience.

The ‘used tickets please’ box and ‘pay as you enter sign’ are especially interesting for those of us who now catch trams to see how far they have come over the years to the introduction of Myki.

The depot opened in 1916 and for many years trams from the City to Wattle Park and Burwood and from Richmond to Power Street ran from there.

However, the fast growth of Melbourne meant that the Hawthorn depot could no longer handle the tram traic and from 1965 onwards, the Hawthorn depot was given the responsibility of training drivers and conductors, making uniforms and became the storage place for historic leets.In the 1990s, the State Government made a decision to sell of some of the building, which has now been converted into apartments next to the museum.

The Melbourne Tram Museum at Hawthorn Depot is at the junction of Riversdale Rd, Power St and Wallen Rd, Hawthorn. It is open to visitors on the second Saturday of each month, and the fourth Saturday between October and March (except for December), from 11am–5pm.

The museum houses 21 fully-restored trams including:• a ‘toast-rack’ bodied V-class from 1906 – one of

theirstelectriiedtramsinMelbourne• several versions of the iconic W-class trams• the experimental X-class tram• the prototype of the Z-class.

Melbourne Tram Museum at Hawthorn Depot is one of the hidden gems of Melbourne. It may not

look like much from the outside but the depot is full of important Melbourne history.

Visitors donate a gold coin to enter the museum and can buy merchandise which goes towards upkeep. While there are no plans for expansion at the moment, the depot was given $25,000 by VicTrack in 2010 to improve visitor experience.

Over the coming summer, the museum will extend its open days in response to public demand.

The Hawthorn depot has had a growing number of visitors over the years, with as many as 3000 visitors a year and 1400 visitors to its website. Summer time sees up to 120 each open day, witsh the museum expecting the same, if not more this summer.

“When the weather’s better, people feel more inclined to go out and do something diferent”, says Russell Jones, a volunteer at the depot.

Mr Jones is one of the many knowledgeable and friendly volunteers or ‘Friends of the Hawthorn Tram Depot Inc.’, a non-proit group operating the museum on behalf of VicTrack since 2005.

The tram museum plays an important part in explaining Melbourne’s history, according to Mr Jones. He believes that it’s important for people to see the history of trams, and how vital they are in Melbourne. “You can’t understand how Melbourne developed without understanding how trams developed,” says Mr Jones. “It’s like only reading half of a book.”

Mr Jones believes that it is important for everyone to come and visit. The older generation come to experience what trams used to be like, remembering what it was like in their childhood. “For the younger generation it’s more like seeing how much things have changed,” he said.

The volunteers at the museum have strong ties with Melbourne’s trams. Mr Jones’ aunt was one of

Ingniting Teen Spirit on the Kokoda Trailfrom Canterbury Girls High, said she is less inclined to be inluenced by peer-group pressure and believes her organisational skills have improved. For the majority, it was their irst time visiting a third-world country. Seeing how the villagers live made the teens realise it is possible to live with less, and gave them a gratitude for their own lives and opportunities. Overall, walking the Kokoda Trail has left these teens with an indelible experience. It

has built conidence in themselves and tolerance of others. Obstacles and challenges are now faced and tackled with a positive attitude and they have gained a respect for what their bodies and minds can achieve.

Some of the students are using the experience as part of their Duke of Edinburgh program and all of them are required

to participate in various monthly community service activities as a way of showing gratitude for those who helped fund the challenge. Funding participants include Bendigo Bank, the Rotary clubs of Camberwell, Balwyn and North Balwyn, and Boost Juice.

An overwhelming sense of accomplishment was felt on their last day as they completed the trek, tears and laughter intermingling. Another highlight of the trip was meeting the oldest living Fuzzy Wuzzy Angel, aged between 100 and 103, depending on which day you ask him! Fuzzy Wuzzy was the name given to local Papuans who assisted and escorted sick and injured Australians during the combat. he name stems from characteristics of their frizzy hair and their helpful role towards the Diggers. Prior to their return to Melbourne, the team spent a couple of days in a local village where they became acquainted with the locals, swimming, relaxing and debrieing about their life-altering journey.

I asked the girls what it felt like to return home and how they had changed in the week they had been away. Sadness and jetlag were the most common feelings, with many missing the camaraderie of the group and the special bonds formed. he porters who played such an important role were also missed. he overwhelming response was that the trip changed their perspective on life in many positive ways. Bec, a Year 11 student at Camberwell High School, said she gained a conidence in herself and her ability to achieve whatever she puts her mind to. She now worries less about people’s negativity. Competition in this traditionally male domain sometimes had its challenges, but Yvonne is well-accepted and quite at home playing snooker and billiards with the men. She just wishes there were more women to keep her company.

Her uniqueness does not limit her performance, however. Yvonne estimates that she wins 50 per cent of her snooker games and 60 per cent of her billiards games and that her handicap has gone into the minuses. Yvonne loves the game and inds it challenges the mind and keeps her interested, active and builds her self-conidence, especially when winning!

Along with Yvonne, this year’s Burwood RSL competition players are: Don Lambourne (captain of the team and Treasurer, Burwood RSL, ex-British Army Sergeant, Ordnance Corps, aged 85) Neil Hands (ailiate member and Vice-President, Burwood RSL), Harold Brown (just turned 95! Ex-Army, 4th Field Regiment Artillery WWII, PNG and Bougainville), Damian Willcox (ailiate member and Secretary, Burwood RSL, Alf Dowling (ailiate member, Keith Tinker and Robert Prest (social members). All interesting people in their own right!his “ighting force” of snooker–billiards players in the Over-55 RSL competition is presently third on the ladder and heading for the inals. Yvonne, in particular, is keen to win another trophy!

Tribute: Jim Copeland, a long-time president and life member of the Burwood RSL sub-branch, sadly passed away in July He was a WWII veteran and a stalwart of Burwood RSL. He will be sorely missed. He was 89. Lest We Forget.

He will share with us his perceptions on volunteering as well as his particular interest – the work of Eastern Palliative Care.Ater many years of service as a barrister and QC, Sir James was a judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria from 1978 until 1994. Ater a period as Lieutenant-Governor of Victoria, Sir James was appointed the twenty-ith Governor of Victoria in 1997. He was the irst Australian state governor of Italian descent and has maintained a long interest in Italian Community afairs in Australia. He was the Founding Chairman of the Australia Council of Multicultural Afairs in 1989. Sir James was honoured with a Knighthood for services to the Community and became a Companion of the Order of Australia in 1993. He also received the award of Gran Croce all’Ordine di

Merito of the Republic of Italy and is a Knight of St John of Jerusalem and a Knight of Malta.

We would like to hear from you if you can assist EV clients in getting to their appointments. Volunteer drivers are reimbursed for travel in their own vehicle. At present we are turning away clients needing transport due to lack of drivers.Our Transport service is primarily aimed at the frail aged and disabled who are housebound or isolated due to mobility diiculties, or other limitations. It is available to HACC eligible residents who live in the cities of Maroondah, Whitehorse and speciied areas in Yarra Ranges, and supports government policy to help people stay in their homes longer.
