COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Examines the theory, techniques, and applications of management systems. Planning, organizing,
leading, and controlling are issues addressed. Topics include environmental influences, organization
design and structure, motivation, total quality management, ethics, production and international
management. Emphasis is on learning through application. (FA and SP) Pre-requisite: sophomore
standing.

You will need to register for My Management Lab (MML). Instructions to register can be
found in the document “My Management Registration Instruction” in the Module section in
Canvas.
PURPOSE OF THE COURSE
To examine the theory, techniques and applications of management systems.
COURSE OBJECTIVES / LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:
- Identify the principals of managing formal organizations
- Recognize the various challenges faced by today’s managers
- Understand how organizations engage in the management functions of planning,
organizing, leading and controlling.
- Be able to describe the process of globalization and how it affects Management

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
For all assignments requiring a submission of a written paper – see paper requirements specifications
under the General Comments Section.
Student Information Sheet- 2 point –
Complete the Student Information Sheet in Coursework and submit. You will not see an
acknowledgement from Canvas; you will receive an acknowledgement of submittal from the
document.
Attendance/Particpation: - 40 points (1 points for each class)
Attendance will be taken at each class.
For a total of two times, if you inform the instructor, by email, prior to the class time, that you
will not be present in class, you will receive 0.5 point for an excused absence.
After two times, any miss from class will be considered unexcused and you will not receive any
attendance points for that class. If the miss occurs after the two times, you will need to provide
written documentation from an appropriate authority concerning your absence to receive 1 point
for an excused absence for that class.
In Class Activities: - 15 points
Throughout the course there will be class activities, (group and individual) that will be
completed in class and handed in.
Class Activities cannot be made up. If you are not in class, you cannot complete the class
activity. No Exceptions
Homework Quizzes: - 80 points – (16 HW Quizzes)
Each chapter will have a short homework quiz assignment to complete in My Management
Lab (MML).
For each quiz, you have 2 attempts. The higher score of the 2 attempts will be recorded as
your grade.
The quizzes are not timed. For each attempt, once you start the quiz you have to complete it
in one sitting. You can take the second attempt at a different time, but you must complete
that second attempt in one sitting.
To review the quizzes after the due date, for a period of time, go into MML to Results, click
on the assignment where the due date has passed and click on the word “Review”. This will
show your answers and the correct answers.
Homework Assignments: - 40 points – (8 HW Assignments)
• There will be 8 brief assignments that can be a discussion question, activity, video questions
or a simulation.
For video questions there are 2 attempts for each question.
The video questions and simulations are not timed.
If you have any issues with the homework assignments or homework quizzes, My Management
Lab or your computer, YOU MUST NOTIFY ME BY EMAIL BEFORE THE DUE DATE.
For a total of two times, if you have My Management Lab problems or computer problems, and
you notify me prior to the due date, you will be allowed a retry. After the two times unless you
have written documentation from the Pearson help desk (an incident number and action taken) or
computer repair information, you will not receive a retry, unless there are unusual circumstances.

Homework Case Study Report – 18 points
Case Study Ch 4 Case #2– The Power of Presence – page 133-134
Instructions:
Read The Power of Presence Case Study
• Answer the case study questions 4-18, 4-19 and 4-21 as provided
• Question 4-20 is modified with additional information to what shown below. Answer this
question instead of the question shown in the textbook for this case study.
Question 4-20: As Tableau executives get ready to spend time in the company’s
international offices, how can they prepare for the cultural differences they will
encounter? Then compare and contrast a country of your choosing with the United
States using all of Hofstede’s Dimensions.
• Provide an overall conclusion which includes your comments and opinions concerning the
case study topic.
Format should be in question answer format. Identify the question and then provide the response.
End with a conclusion paragraph.
Follow the writing requirements identified in the Syllabus.
Interview with a Manager – 25 points total – See Syllabus for due dates by 10:00 PM
(Part 1 – 3 points, Part 2 – 4 points, Part 3 – 18 points)
Interview a manager in your organization or at another organization you are interested in.
❖ Part 1. Identify the manager you plan to interview early in the semester –– 3 points
o Required
▪ Name of the person you plan to interview
• Title of the person and company they work for
▪ Include a brief rationale on why you think interviewing this person is a good
choice for this assignment.
Length of assignment – no longer than 1 page
See General Comments section for paper requirements.
❖ Part 2. Identify at least 3 additional questions you will ask the manager above and beyond the
list below in Part 3. – 4 points
o Required

❖ Part 3 - Prepare a paper– 18 points
o Required
▪ Provide a brief introduction
▪ Compile your questions, and responses given
▪ Provide an overall summary of the interview experience and your own conclusions
Length of paper – minimum of 3 pages, maximum 6 pages.
o The required initial list of questions to ask plus the additional questions you identified
in Part 2.
• Describe their position and where it fits in the organization.
• How many staff members does she/he manage?
• What functions does she/he manage?
• What does she/he see as primary challenges for the area that she/he manages?
• What skill sets does she/he feel are most important for managers?
• What does she/he enjoy most about their job?
• What does she/he enjoy least about their job?
• What general advice does she/he have for those studying management?
Any questions beyond this list and your provided additional questions can also be
included in the interview.
Format – For the questions and responses section, put them into a dialog format of identifying the
question and providing the response. As part of the response provided there may be conversation
between you and your interviewee as you probe to gain complete and detailed responses to the
questions.
Follow the writing requirements identified in the Syllabus.
Group Case Study Presentation -15 points–
See Syllabus for class presentation dates
A group of students will complete and present one (1) case study in an oral presentation to the
class. The presentation will be submitted and uploaded into Canvas by 10:00 PM the day before
you are scheduled to present in class.
The groups of students will be assigned randomly.
One Case Study from the textbook (from a select list) will be assigned randomly.
The Syllabus will be revised to include the case selections and due dates on the Course
Schedule

o Required for each Group Case Study Presentation:
• Read the assigned case study
• In the presentation document and oral presentation
o Provide a brief summary of the case
o Answer the questions provided at the end of the case study
o Provide concluding remarks.
• Submit the presentation to Canvas by 10 PM the day before your group is to
present your case study – 1 submission per group
• Present to the class as shown on the Syllabus
• Use some level of visual aids
Your group will not submit any type of “paper” for this assignment.
The oral presentation is what is submitted for this assignment.
Case Study Presentation Individual Response – 3 points each – total 18 points
For every case study presented in class by a group, individuals not presenting will develop at
least two (2) well thought out comments or questions concerning the case study presented.
Your comments or questions can be handwritten during the presentation and submit to the
instructor at the end of the class or be submitted to Canvas by 10:00 PM on the date of the class
case study presentation.
Length of paper – no long than 2 good paragraphs
When the group case presentation is completed, students will be asked to provide some of their
comments or questions for class discussion.
If you are not present in class the day the case study is presented by the group, you can read the
case study on your own (you do not have to answer the questions, but you need to read the
questions along with the case to determine your comments or question). Submit the two
comments or questions to Canvas no later than 10:00 PM of the next class after the class case
study presentation.
Example – a group presented on a Monday. If you missed class (not a good thing) you need to
complete your questions or comments and submit them to Canvas by Wednesday by 10:00 PM.
Group Project: - 33 points –
A group project will be completed about an organization. The group project will provide
information about a company, their area of business, their management practices, etc. More
detail will be provided closer to the start of the group projects.
An individual progress report, a group paper and a group class presentation will be required.
An anonymous survey grading your group members will be provided.
Groups and topics will be assigned randomly.

PHONES, Tablets, and Laptops should be TURNED OFF, NOT ON THE
DESK
AND NOT IN YOUR LAPS during class lecture.
Only when indicated to use your laptops or tablet for a class exercise should electronics be used
in class.
Exams- 3 Exams, 100 Points each, Total 300 Points
There will be 3 exams.
Please see the course schedule for chapters covered for each exam. The exam can consist of
multiple choice, true/false, and short answers.
The exams will be not cumulative
Exam 3 will be taken on the date provided on the Final Exam Schedule for Fall 2017 for our
class.
You will be allowed 1- 8 ½” x 11” ONE SIDE ONLY sheet of notes to use during each
exam. The sheet may be typed.
GENERAL COMMENTS:
Earlier in the Syllabus you are asked to bring a tablet or laptop to class ---
However, NO electronic devices are to be used during class lectures.
Please don’t give me a reason to ask you to put your device away during class. The use of the
electronic devices are distracting to others.
Guidelines for all paper/reports:
!!!NOTE: ALL ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE SUBMITTED IN WORD !!!
All papers/reports should have a 1” margin on each side, double spaced, using Times Roman,
Arial or Verdana 12 font size.
Your name, title of the paper, course name (BUS 302) and date should be single spaced and there
should not be excessive space from the top of the page to your paper content on the first page
Title pages are not required. Use APA format and cite your sources using APA style.
Please adhere to the paper length instructions. If you are under more than 1/2 page on the
minimum length requirement or over more than 1 page of the maximum length requirement you
will receive a reduction in points in that assignment for length (and following
instructions/directions). If there is a good reason to exceed the paper requirements, please
contact me before the due date.

Be prepared:
You will get more out of this course when you are prepared.
As we go through the course, I may be calling on students for participation randomly. I encourage
class participation, never to embarrass but to help you stay engaged and learn.
Respect each other and each other’s ideas at all times.
Don't interrupt someone else; do not talk to your neighbor during class, etc. Please keep it
professional.

COURSE POLICIES:
Attendance
Regular and prompt attendance in class is essential for your success. Absences WILL negatively
impact your overall grade. I will take attendance at every class. Please refer to the Attendance
section earlier in the Syllabus for details.
If I have taken attendance before you enter the class, please notify me that you are present at the end
of class.
Please communicate with me if there are any attendance situations.
Make Up Policy
In general there is no make up work for missing any assignments or exams.
Late submission:
Late submission for work will not be accepted, unless there are extenuating situations.
Please become familiar with the due dates on the syllabus.

If there is a situation when a late assignment is accepted, if accepted, there will be a penalty
reduction on the grade. The penalty reduction may range from 20% to 50% of the grade received
on the assignment and will be determined by length of time from the due date and other
circumstances

The instructor and the University reserve the right to modify, amend, or change the syllabus (course
requirements, grading policy, etc.) as the curriculum or program require(s).
