This new and improved isolation guard prevents animal-caused outages in electrical substation equipment. Reliable outage prevention: BISG II discs have been successfully eliminat- ing outages from squirrels, raccoons, opos- sums, cats, and other animals in substations for years. The new BISG II guard has been designed to provide the same great protection with added features. The rugged, non-tracking, UV-resistant polymer ensures long-term performance even in the most extreme environmental conditions. Faster, easier installation: The BISG II guard allows easier hotstick installation by incorporating a threaded area in the guard. The integrated threads eliminate the need to hold a nut while installing the bolt assembly with a hotstick. The bolted design positively and tightly secures the device onto the insulator or bushing, eliminating loosening or drooping caused by wind, snow, ice, or animals. Expanded size range: The BISG II guard now fits insulator core diameters ranging from 1”(25mm) through 4.5” (115mm) from the factory. The new “grill” type design allows easy field modifications for even larger diameters (see your local Tyco Electronics representative for details). The BISG II guard can also have its outside diameter reduced by trimming along the grill ribs. This will allow the guard to fit in tight phase-to- phase insulator applications. “Invisible” appearance: The new BISG II design gives the same protec- tion as the old guard without the noticeable profile. The “invisible” design allows easier visibility of switch blades and other equipment components through the guard. BISG II Bus Insulator Squirrel Guard

This new and improved isolation guard prevents animal-caused outages in electricalsubstation equipment.

Reliable outage prevention:BISG II discs have been successfully eliminat-ing outages from squirrels, raccoons, opos-sums, cats, and other animals in substationsfor years. The new BISG II guard has beendesigned to provide the same great protectionwith added features.

Same high performance material:Superior high voltage outdoor materials are used in the new BSIG II guard design. Therugged, non-tracking, UV-resistant polymerensures long-term performance even in themost extreme environmental conditions.

Faster, easier installation:The BISG II guard allows easier hotstick installation by incorporating a threaded area in the guard. The integrated threads eliminate the need to hold a nut while installing the bolt assembly with a hotstick. The bolteddesign positively and tightly secures the deviceonto the insulator or bushing, eliminating loosening or drooping caused by wind, snow, ice, or animals.

Expanded size range:The BISG II guard now fits insulator core diameters ranging from 1”(25mm) through4.5” (115mm) from the factory. The new “grill”type design allows easy field modifications foreven larger diameters (see your local TycoElectronics representative for details).

The BISG II guard can also have its outside diameter reduced by trimming along the grillribs. This will allow the guard to fit in tightphase-to- phase insulator applications.

“Invisible” appearance:The new BISG II design gives the same protec-tion as the old guard without the noticeableprofile. The “invisible” design allows easier visibility of switch blades and other equipmentcomponents through the guard.

HVCEHigh Voltage Creepage ExtendersA remedy for pollution flashovers of insulators

R

Raysulate Creepage Extenders increase theflashover performance of insulators byreducing the surface electric stress, reduc-ing the leakage current and increasing theelectric strength of the insulators.Installation of creepage extenders:

– Increases creepage length– Improves insulator shape– Adds high performance polymeric

material to the creepage path

Pollution flashoversChanging environments can cause increasesin pollution levels which lead to excessivecontamination of high voltage insulators. This may lead to unacceptably frequent flashovers if the creepage length and general design is inadequate.

A replacement insulator having greater elec-tric strength may be installed but the costsof this are high especially when a completeassembly, like a bushing, is involved. Com-mon palliatives include live washing whichreduces the contamination level, or surfacetreatments, either grease or rubbery coat-ings which smother the dirt or make thesurface less wettable, or both. These palliatives have disadvantages in costand effectiveness. The frequency of washingcan be unacceptable and in some circum-stances washing may promote flashover.Grease is a fire risk when it becomes choked with pollution and its removal isunpleasant and expensive. Coatings are difficult to apply and are also difficult toremove when eroded.

The Raysulate Creepage Extender is a poly-meric skirt internally coated with a speciallyformulated mastic. When heated the productshrinks around and bonds onto an existinginsulator shed increasing the effective dia-meter and creepage distance of the insulator.

Creepage extender design features

Increases creepage lengthThis increases electric strength by reducingleakage current and surface stress.

Improves insulator shapeThe increased shed diameter improves strikedistance and improves heavy wetting performance by creating an umbrella effect.

Bonds to insulator surfaceThe extender adhesive has been speciallyformulated to strongly bond to the existingporcelain or glass skirt. Thus, the assembly

High Voltage Creepage ExtendersA remedy for pollution flashovers of insulators

Raysulate

needs only periodic inspection and will beeffective many times longer than grease.

RuggedExtenders are designed to be resistant toconventional spray washing techniques andwill withstand all normal handling abuseand extreme weather conditions.

Proven materialsThe extenders are fabricated usingRaychem’s unique high voltage materialstechnology which has over 25 years of highvoltage field experience in adverse environ-ments all over the world on cable termina-tions, insulators and bushings.

Simple to installJust degrease the insulator and shrink theextender with a gas torch or hot air gun.Raychem can provide installation training.

Creepage extender testingData from IEC 815 shows that at a fixed voltage, our typically recommanded exten-sion of 20% to the creepage will more thandouble the pollution level needed to causeflashover (see figure 1). Pollution flashovertests (to IEC 507) on insulators fitted withcreepage extenders show that, for a fixedsalt concentration, flashover values increasein proportion to the increased creepagedistance. Figure 2 shows typical results on a 66 kV post insulator.

In practice, these results show that the ad-dition of creepage extenders can effectivelychange an insulator which has marginal per-formance in the prevailing conditions to onewhich has a large margin of safety againstpollution flashover. Tests have been done on a variety of insulator sizes and shapesincluding suspension and post insulatorscovering a range of diameters. The resultsconsistently show an improvement for allinsulators. Where the insulators are of aparticularly bad design (eg. close packedsheds of identical size) the improvement in shape adds to the effect of the longer creepage path to give exceptionally goodresults.

Raychem report UVR 8139 summarizesthese results.

Materials propertiesRaychem’s high voltage insulating materialshave undergone long-term field and labora-tory testing to determine their suitability foruse in the high voltage environment. Theuse of the material (eg. in several millionRaychem high voltage cable terminationsinstalled worldwide) bears out the excellenttesting results and has helped establish anoutstanding service record in the mostsevere environmental conditions.

Tracking and erosion resistance testingOn the ASTM D2303 inclined planetest, thematerial is non-tracking under all conditionsincluding addition of 1% sugar contaminant.

Resistance to weatheringRaychem’s on-going material tests measurethe retention of elongation as a method ofmonitoring ageing. Retention of elongationis a good measure of resistance to crackingby UV light. The material properties measu-red for the Raychem high voltage materialdemonstrate its suitability for use outdoorseven in extreme desert conditions where UVlight concentrations are severe. Total creepage (mm)

Selection tableCreepage extenders are usually fitted toinsulators with normal or alternating shedprofiles (as defined by IEC 815). This IECspecification also categorises insulators into one of four pollution classes.

Class I (ESDD* 0.03 to 0.06 mg/cm2) Light Creepage = 16 mm/kV system

Class II (ESDD 0.1 to 0.2 mg/cm2) Medium Creepage = 20 mm/kV system

Class III (ESDD 0.3 to 0.6 mg/cm2) Heavy Creepage = 25 mm/kV system

Class IV (ESDD > 0.6 mg/cm2) Very heavy Creepage = 31 mm/kV system

*ESDD equivalent salt deposit density

We recommend moving from one class to ahigher pollution class for improving flash-over performance as shown in the table.

– Creepage extenders can also be used to produce extensions on insulators designed for highly polluted areas (with > 31 mm/kV as designed).

– For specific recommendation, contactyour local Raychem representative. They can advise on fitting creepage extenders to non-standard shed profilesand pollution class insulators.
