Yes tire problems!

Something all of us can understand, and always at the most inconvenient time ...right?

Thanks to our “Tire Angel” who had us up and running in no time.

Kaiser Lake Farms Eric Kaiser has been farming Kaiser Lake Farms on Hay Bay in the beautiful Quinte region of Ontario, since 1969. Max, Eric’s son has been farming Kaiser Lake Farms since 1992, and this year Max’s son, Rob joined the operation full time. They produce eggs and pullets, feed and cash crops. Eric and Max have observed their land and working with the land, learned to manage everything they can, using crop rotation, grassed waterways and no-till soil manage-ment, leaving the weather as the only unknown factor.

The Kaisers’ farm sustainably by cycling nutrients between the chick-ens and crops. Only a minimum amount of additional inputs are needed to makeup for what the crops remove and the chickens can-not give back! Something else the Kaisers value very highly is their relationship with their neighbors. Happy neighbors are understanding neighbors!

Kaiser Lake Farms (cont’d) As you can imagine, our little delay with the bus caused us to make a few changes to our plans. We cannot thank the Kaisers for their understanding of the situation. To save the day, Max and Eric very kindly agreed to pro-vide us with a picnic area. Thanks to Charlene Whattam and Steve Holmes for taking care of the arrangements for the delicious pizza.

Eric had lots to share with us. He even de-layed his lunch to make his presentation. A very special thank you to very gracious hosts Eric, Max & Rob For taking the time out of a busy day of harvesting beans to show us your farm and share your ex-perience and knowledge with us.

MacKinnon Brothers Brewing Company is located on a bicentennial family farm in the village of Bath, about 20 minutes west of Kingston. They use hops, wheat, and barley grown right here on the farm to brew beer, creating their own unique flavors. “We do this so that beer patrons every-where can share in the taste and tradition of our farm.” We were fortunate to sample three of their flavors...all of the awesome!

Their ancestors settled the land in 1784, and through the generations built a thriving farm. The boys decided to add another ele-ment into the mix: A farm-based brewery . We’ve renovated century old barns to house the equipment, and planted hops and malting barley in the surrounding fields.

Renovations are on-going. Plans for the ‘barn floor’, if you like, include a stage and dance floor which can be used for events like weddings and receptions. ...page 6

MacKinnon Brothers Brewing Company Left - growing hops is definitely not easy. Maintaining uniform quality from year to year has proven to be difficult. But not just for them, all producers. Despite the challenges, worth it to have their own for their products.

Finally somewhere cool...yes it felt really good to get in out of the sunshine!

This is the brewing cellar where temperature is of vital importance for quality and to reduce production costs. It can’t be too warm in the summer, nor too cold in the winter. Being located under-ground makes it easier to maintain the necessary tem-perature. The brewing and ‘bottling’ take place here. ...page 7

Checking out a souvenir to share at home...decisions, decisions, decisions...they were all good!

It was a very hot day and this was the best way to end it! Thanks to Ivan and Kori for making us welcome and sharing your insights <. And<. Your excellent product!
