Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system uses bus-like vehicles that are larger and longer than a normal bus. The high-capacity vehicles can carry larger number of people compared to conventional buses. It has quality stations with ticket booths just like in MRT or LRT stations. The fare is paid at these stations unlike in conventional buses where you pay on board. There are also areas where passengers can leave their bikes safely and there are buses that deliver passengers to the stations for free. BRT uses dedicated lanes unlike conventional bus services which uses the general traffic lanes together with the other vehicles. And in BRT system each high-capacity vehicles are monitored. Disabled persons are also considered in BRT systems. They can board the BRT vehicles more easily because the station platforms are levelled with the bus floor. I dont think that BRT will succeed in the Philippines. Here in our country, there are many people who own private vehicles. Jeeps, tricycles and motorbikes are also present. There is also little space for new lanes that BRT system needs. For BRT to succeed, the use of private cars and other public vehicles should be minimized. If this happens, there will be more spaces that can be used as lanes for BRT vehicles. To make this possible, the cooperation of citizens especially those that own cars are needed. The vendors that sell beside the lanes should also be transferred. They will be affected when new lanes are built or widening of lanes are performed. The BRT stations should also be well-built for better transportations. Doing this requires quite a sum of money. Good engineers and reliable persons that will manage the construction of the whole BRT system are necessary. There should also be better information dissemination so that people will know the goodness of BRT systems. BRT and similar transport are sustainable if there is cooperation between government and citizens.
