They did not have another comparable option available.

11Replaced basic person-to-person visual checks of IDReplaced use of passports by frequent travelers but not entirely3. Replaced Forms of ID

In actuality NEXUS only replaces basic person-to-person visual checks of identity and the use of passports by frequent travelers but not their need entirely.

12NEXUS did not replace CANPASS3. Replaced Forms of ID

As well, NEXUS did not completely replace any other program or technology, instead it built upon the CANPASS program and increased user ability. It also was not chosen over any other options.

13Increased speed and ease of processes for frequent travelersReduces travel time by approx. 10 min/person4. Benefits

The Ottawa Airport was able to increase the speed and ease of their security processes for frequent travelers.

The NEXUS system reduced the travel time by approximately 10 minutes per person.

14Passengers do not require security screening each time they fly

4. Benefits

The Airport handles over 500,000 cross-border travelers every year, many of which are business people who travel very frequently and for only a short visit across the border. They do not require the same lengthy security screening process each and every time.

15Expected initial issues of new software and processes Overall good experience5. Problems Experienced

The Ottawa Airport experienced the expected initial issues with the new software and processes but once the initial kinks were sorted out, the overall experience has been a positive one.

16Liisa Peer explains that "As long as the technology is sound, I think the majority of people are going to say that it's a good thing."5. Problems Experienced

According to Liisa Peer, a policy consultant with the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce, and user of the new system, "As long as the technology is sound, she thinks the majority of people are going to say that it's a good thing."

17

Risk of corruption, theft, or leverageUneasily duplicated unlikely that an invasion of privacy will be an issue 6. Possible Future Problems

As long as there is a value placed on information there will always be the possibility that someone will want to corrupt it, steal it, or use it for personal gain.

Uneasily duplicated as your iris is, it is very unlikely that an invasion of privacy will be an issue. 18

Increased threat of an unapproved person evading securityLikely the CBSA has tightened security to avoid the possibility

6. Possible Future Problems

Increased threat that someone will attempt to add an unapproved person to the list to evade the usual security checks.

Although it is likely that the CBSA has tightened their security measures to avoid the possibility of fraudulent and lost information.

19Thank You for Viewing Our Presentation

Initiated only 2 years ago, and only encountering what was deemed acceptable initial software issues, the NEXUS program has been met with great enthusiasm. It has since helped a large number of people cross the American-Canadian border with ease and without headache. And has seen soaring results.
