List of Egged bus routes in Israel 1
List of Egged bus routes in IsraelThe Egged Bus Cooperative is the largest bus company in Israel, and one of the largest in the world. It operates over400 bus lines, including internal city lines in many of Israel's cities (in others, the Dan Bus Company, Kavim,Superbus, etc. operate the internal lines), as well as most of Israel's inter-city lines. Below is a list. While there is no consistent numbering scheme for Egged's lines, it seems to follow a few basic rules:• Internal lines, and intercity lines in rural areas, are numbered below 100• Short inter-city and suburban lines are numbered 100–299• Long-distance lines are numbered 300–999, following some basic rules:
• 300–399 is for lines that operate in the Southern District (and some northern lines)• 400–499 is for lines that operate in the Jerusalem District (and some northern lines)• 500–699 is for lines that operate in the Sharon area (and very few northern lines)• 700–899 is for lines that connect the North District to more southern parts of Israel• 900–999 is for lines that connect the Haifa District and surrounding areas to more southern parts of Israel
Each bus line is classified by Egged as 'Regular' (measef), 'Express' or 'Direct' (yashir). The word measef literallymeans collecting, i.e. the bus either enters each town it passes, or stops at almost each intersection along its route, which usually makes it very slow compared to express buses. Express and direct buses, are usually on long-distanceroutes and might travel at certain sections along the same stretch as other bus routes, but they do not stop at eachintersection. On top of that, an express/direct bus is not obligated to pick up short-distance passengers and the drivercannot sell a ticket for a short ride along his route. The express/direct lines are not usually pure non-stop routes, butmight have a minimal amount of stops while leaving and entering the different cities. All internal city buses areconsidered regular/collecting.[1]
Many if not most of Egged's intercity bus lines originate or end in a central bus station/terminal (CBS/CBT). TelAviv Central Bus Station is the largest terminal in Israel, and some say the largest in the world.[2]
As previously mentioned, some intercity lines in rural areas are numbered below 100. Those lines are included in the"internal" sections for the large city that they begin or end in. When the bus enters a new municipality, the name ofthe municipality is bolded.Certain lines use armoured buses. Those lines are marked with a small tank icon ( ).

Haredi Intercity linesNOTE: Gender Segregation is no longer enforceable. This quote has been taken from Haaretz.com [15]
The High Court of Justice ruled Thursday that public bus companies could continue the practice of gendersegregation on dozens of lines serving the ultra-Orthodox sector, as long as there is no coercion or violence involved."A public transportation operator, like any other person, does not have the right to order, request or tell womenwhere they may sit simply because they are women," Supreme Court Justice Elyakim Rubinstein wrote in his ruling."They must sit wherever they like."From experience I have never been on a gender segregated bus either within the city of Jerusalem or betweenJerusalem and other points of destination.

Jerusalem Central Bus Station
The Jerusalem Central Bus Station
The Jerusalem Central Bus Station is themain bus depot in Jerusalem, Israel and oneof the busiest bus stations in the country.Located on Jaffa Road near the entrance tothe city, it serves Egged, Superbus and Danintercity bus routes. City buses pick up anddischarge passengers across the street onJaffa Road and on Zalman ShazarBoulevard, which can be accessed via anunderground pedestrian passageway.[1]
History
The Central Bus Station opened inSeptember 2001 on the site of the oldJerusalem Bus Station, built in the 1960s.The old station was a long, single-story building with an open-air bus depot behind it. Passengers embarked anddisembarked at curbside on an outdoor platform. In the 1950s, the main bus station was located in the heart ofdowntown Jerusalem, behind the Pillar Building ("Binyan Ha'amudim") on Jaffa Road.Jerusalem's new bus station was commissioned in order to accommodate the increasing flow of bus traffic as well asto implement security protocols for screening incoming and outgoing passengers. During construction of the new busstation, operations were moved to a large, two-level parking lot several blocks east on Jaffa Road.
Interior design
Interior of the departures terminal on the 3rd floor
The new Central Bus Station has two levelsof underground parking, three main levels, and five upper floors of office space. Thefirst main level is a shopping concourse andfood court. The second main level serves asboth a shopping concourse and the arrivalshall for incoming bus passengers. Since thebuilding is constructed on the side of a hill, the first and second main levels both have aground-level entrance/exit to Jaffa Road.Besides retail stores, the concourse includesbakery outlets, a video game parlor, andfree-standing gift sellers. The third main level serves as the departures hall, with 22 bus platforms. Passengers wait at numbered doors for thebus to pull into its slot in the indoor parking lot, then go through the door into the parking lot to board. Large digitaldisplay boards post upcoming departure times. While most platforms accommodate more than one bus route, popular routes, such as Jerusalem-Tel Aviv, have theirown designated platform and run more frequently.
Jerusalem Central Bus Station 24
Passengers and their baggage are screened by security personnel every time they enter the Central Bus Stationbuilding. That is, departing passengers must go through security clearance when they enter the building from JaffaRoad and may then board buses without additional security checks. Riders returning to Jerusalem are dropped off inthe garage on the other side of the building. They may choose to exit out to the street—in which case they do notneed to pass through security—or to go into the bus station building—in which case they must go through a securitycheck. People wishing to visit only the shopping concourses must also clear security. As is the case for mostcommercial security checkpoints in Israel, gun owners are exempt from security searches, it being presumed thatanyone who has been vetted by the government to carry a loaded firearm in public has no criminal or terroristintentions. In addition to building security, Egged has its own team of uniformed security personnel patrolling theindoor bus parking lots.

Controversy
Shopping mall
The decision to include a shoppingconcourse within the bus station (andthrough which passengers must pass on theirway to the departures level) met with vocalcriticism from rabbis and leaders in the localHaredi community. Although the busstation/shopping mall design was alreadycommonplace in other cities, the oldJerusalem bus station—as well as thetemporary bus station erected duringconstruction—only contained a small coffeeshop and cigarette and magazine stands. Tothe Haredim, the prospect of a multi-levelshopping mall would create an atmosphereof “levity” diametrically opposed to theirlifestyle.
Haredi activists had already begun operating a so called "mehadrin" (religiously-conscious) bus line between BneiBrak and Jerusalem in order to pressure Egged to open a similar line. "Mehadrin" bus lines are characterized byseparate seating of men and women and no radio being played by the driver. After Haredi activists petitioned theMinistry of Transportation to allow Egged to open a departure point for buses traveling to Haredi destinations thatwould board outside the Central Bus Station, Egged opened a special platform (#22) in the Central Bus Stationwhich is located far from the other platforms, where passengers boarding its Route 400 to Bnei Brak sit in relativeprivacy. In addition, the bus company also agreed to launch a new, "mehadrin" Route 402 between Jerusalem andBnei Brak. This route departs from Egged's city bus terminus at Har Hotzvim in northern Jerusalem, accommodatingHaredi riders who wish to avoid the Central Bus Station altogether. The Har Hotzvim terminus has since expanded toinclude "mehadrin" bus departures to other Haredi destinations such as Safed, Ashdod, Haifa, Arad, Kiryat Ata andmore. In a ruling of January 2011, the Israeli High Court of Justice stated the unlawfulness of gender segregation andabolished the “mehadrin” public buses. However, the court rule allows the continuation of the gender segregation inpublic buses on a strictly voluntary basis for a one-year experimental period.[2]
A second bone of contention was the opening of a McDonald's franchise in the food court. Most McDonald'srestaurants, including the one in the Jerusalem city center, do not have kashrut certification from the rabbinate.Although this McDonald's franchise was in the process of applying for a kashrut certificate, and even completed itsconstruction accordingly, the rabbinate conditioned its certification on McDonald's making all its other current andfuture outlets in the city kosher.[3] McDonald's rejected this and announced the branch would follow kashrutdemands and open without a certificate, whereupon Haredi activists threatened a mass boycott of the Central BusStation by Haredi bus passengers if the McDonald's did open. The Natzba real-estate firm which owns the bus stationresponded by canceling McDonald's contract. McDonald's took it to court and won; Natzba was forced to pay it100,000 shekels in trial expenses. McDonald's opened its franchise in the Central Bus Station, following halachicobligations, but without rabbinical supervision or approval. The Haredi boycott never materialized.[4] In January2010, McDonalds reopened with a kosher certificate from the Jerusalem rabbinate, after the company agreed to makechanges to satisfy the rabbis. The signs are blue, instead of the traditional red, with "kosher" written in English andHebrew in big letters. The disposable cartons, bags, wraps, and place mats, are also blue and bear no golden arches, and the staff wears special uniforms.[5]
