BUSHFIRE ATTACK LEVEL ASSESSMENT This assessment is in relation to Building Project Number …………….… and relates to an assessment of the bushfire attack level of the subject site pursuant to the requirements of the Building Amendment (Bushfire Construction)Regulations 2011 and AS 3959 – 2009. Property details Number Street/Road City/Suburb Post Code Lot/s Municipality Date of Inspection Step 1: Fire Danger Index (FDI) The Fire Danger Index is: 50 Victorian Alpine Areas (circle applicable FDI) 100 Victoria General Note: This determines which of the final BAL tables to use to assess your property. Step 2: Vegetation Classification Determine the predominant vegetation type which is prevalent within the immediate surrounding area in accordance with Table 2.3 of AS 3959 – 2009. (Refer Appendix A). The standard does contain some exclusions for vegetation types. The vegetation would be classified at the lowest bushfire level BAL-LOW if it is one or a combination of the following: i) Vegetation that is more than 100 metres form the site ii) Single areas of vegetation than 1 hectare in area and not within 100metres of other classifiable vegetation iii) Multiple areas of vegetation less than 0.25 hectares in area and not within 20 metres of the site or each other iv) Strips of vegetation less than 20 metres in width and not within 20 metres of the site or each other or other areas of classifiable vegetation v) Non-vegetated areas including waterways, roads, footpath, buildings or rock outcrops vi) Low threat vegetated including managed grassland, maintained lawns, golf courses and public reserves. Is the vegetation Classification BAL-Low: Yes / No If yes, the assessment is complete and no construction requirements are applicable. If No, proceed on to step 3. Vegetation Type A - Forest B – Woodland C – Shrubland D – Scrub E – Malle / Mulga F – Rainforest G – Grassland Predominant Vegetation Type is: Comments: Step 3: Distance of Vegetation from the Site Determine the distance between the edge of the vegetation (closest to the building site) to the nearest part of the building (including carports, verandahs, decks, landings, etc) Distance to Vegetation is:

BUSHFIRE ATTACK LEVEL ASSESSMENT

This assessment is in relation to Building Project Number …………….… and relates to an assessment of the bushfire attack level of the subject site pursuant to the requirements of the Building Amendment (Bushfire Construction)Regulations 2011 and AS 3959 – 2009. The vegetation would be classified at the lowest bushfire level BAL-LOW if it is one or a combination of the following: i) Vegetation that is more than 100 metres form the site ii) Single areas of vegetation than 1 hectare in area and not within 100metres of other

classifiable vegetation iii) Multiple areas of vegetation less than 0.25 hectares in area and not within 20 metres of the

site or each other iv) Strips of vegetation less than 20 metres in width and not within 20 metres of the site or each

other or other areas of classifiable vegetation v) Non-vegetated areas including waterways, roads, footpath, buildings or rock outcrops vi) Low threat vegetated including managed grassland, maintained lawns, golf courses and

public reserves. Is the vegetation Classification BAL-Low: Yes / No If yes, the assessment is complete and no construction requirements are applicable. If No, proceed on to step 3.

Vegetation Type

A - Forest

B – Woodland

C – Shrubland

D – Scrub

E – Malle / Mulga

F – Rainforest

G – Grassland

Predominant Vegetation Type is: Comments:

Step 3: Distance of Vegetation from the Site Determine the distance between the edge of the vegetation (closest to the building site) to the nearest part of the building (including carports, verandahs, decks, landings, etc) Distance to Vegetation is:

Comments:

Step 4: Determine Slope Under Vegetation Determine the slope of the land ‘under the classified vegetation’. Is the vegetation Upslope or downslope? If downslope, what is the slope of the vegetation (circle)

< 5 deg 5 – 10 deg 10 – 15 deg 15 – 20 deg > 20 deg

Note: If the downslope of the classified vegetation is 20 degrees or greater then the BAL level will automatically be BAL- FZ (Direct exposure to flames from fire front). Refer Appendix B for guidance on how to assess the slope in degrees, i.e. converting the gradient or ratio of the land to the slope in degrees. Comments:

Step 5: Determine the BAL The clause 2.4.2 in AS 3959, (refer Appendix C) will be used to establish the category of bushfire attack for the subject property. The BAL shall be classified as one of the following: BAL-Low Low risk – no construction requirements BAL-12.5 Ember attack BAL-19 Increased levels of ember attack with heat flux between 12.5–19kW/m

2

BAL-29 Increased levels of ember attack with heat flux between 19–29kW/m2

BAL-40 Increased levels of ember attack and likelihood of exposure to flames BAL- FZ Direct exposure to flames from fire front The bushfire attack level (BAL) for this property is: Step 6: Apply AS 3959 Construction Requirements Design documentation to be submitted for building approval shall include construction details, sections, dimensions and notations as required to demonstrate compliance with AS 3959-2009. A summary of construction requirements is included in Appendix D of this assessment. Prepared By: Title Signature Date
