    Dr. Vijay Mallyas success story :

    After completing graduation ,Vijay Mallya worked for the American Hoechst

    Corporation (now Sanofi-Aventis) in the USA and with Jenson & Nicholson in the U.K.

    Since 1980, he assisted his father, the then Chairman of The UB Group, in managing the

    important Brewing and Spirits Divisions and in re-launching the Kingfisher Brand of

    Beer.Vijay Mallya, was elected by shareholders as Chairman of UB in 1983, at the age of 28.

    In 1988, Vijay Mallya became a non-resident Indian to pursue global opportunities

    and to transform the UB Group into Indias first multinational company. While, in the initial

    stages, overseas representative offices had been commissioned, the real break came in 1988

    when Vijay Mallya, in a leveraged buyout, acquired the global Berger Paints Group with

    operating companies across four continents.

    In 1990, following the Government of Indias liberalized economic policies, Vijay

    Mallya decided that the UB Group would only retain interests in businesses that were

    globally competitive and which did not depend upon fiscal tariff protection. He also decided

    to focus on areas of core competence and transformed the vastly diversified UB conglomerate

    into a handful of key operating businesses.

    In 1983, the sales volume of the UB Spirits division was approximately 2.85 million

    cases and UBs beer business trailed behind that of Golden Eagle from Mohan Meakins.

    Through a process of aggressive acquisition and market penetration, The UB Group today

    controls 60% of the total manufacturing capacity for beer in India. With a market share of

    over 36%, it is India's largest selling beer, with 1 out of every 3 bottles of beer sold in India

    being a Kingfisher brand. It is currently available in 52 countries outside India. United Spirits

    Limited has 144 brands under its umbrella, including White Mischief vodka, the market

    leading brand in India.

    Organizational system changes that Vijay Mallya

    implemented:

    1. Information style: Change from a restrictive style of decision making to a

    participative style supported by better communication through a decentralized structure.

    2. Control system: Change from a system of monthly performance reports to a more

    result-oriented review and control management which updated operating results of each line

    of business.

    3. Appraisal system: Change from a traditional appraisal to a performance-based

    appraisal system aimed at creating an atmosphere which supported professionalism.

    4. Motivation system: Change to a informal and accommodating style of management

    restrictive, traditional style, compensation packages for managers based on assigned job

    values system and not designation. Beyond certain rank, there was only a minimum for a

    salary grade and no maximum. There was no fixed increment.

    5. Development system: For senior managers, a planned system of deputation from

    corporate planning to line function existed. External recruitment was done if positions could

    not be filled through promotions from within.

    6. Planning system: Change from the entrepreneurial style of planning and decision-

    making to a participative mode. The planning function is performed by a corporate executive

    committee comprising the Group Chairman, all structure such as horizontal organization and

    delaminated matrices type of structures.

    Leadership Style

    Vijay Mallya focus on developing the people. He focuses on identifying the key

    potential of his employees and tries to enhance those potential which helps in bringing out the

    best traits of the employees. This helps them in achieving their targets and goals that are set

    by the organization. The organization culture and environment has been built in such a way

    that the employees feel comfortable in that environment. With a focus on these the

    organization has been able to Create a people environmentwhere they truly can be all

    they can be. This will help in developing and enhancing the potential of the employees.

    Vijay Mallya treats communication as the best mode of leadership. He follows

    participative type of leadership in which the leaders of his companies focuses on sharing the

    problem with subordinates as a group, and together, they generate and evaluate alternatives

    and attempt to reach consensus on a solution. These include drive, the desire to lead,

    honesty/integrity, self-confidence, cognitive ability and knowledge of the business. It helps in

    The Vittal Mallya Scientific Research Foundation was set up in December 1987, inmemory of the Groups Founder, late Mr. Vittal Mallya. It has been actively involved

    with a mission called Science for Humanity and is a non-profit organization

    participating with the Government in a Public Private Partnership on various projects.

    Mallya Hospital in Bangalore is a very famous hospital with charity ward. The Mallya-Aditi International School in Bangalore, India, here the physically

    handicapped and poor are getting basic education facilities.

    The Victoria and Albert Museum, London and the Duke of Edinburgh AwardsScheme, Prince's Youth trust are some of his contributions to Karnataka state.

    Sponsorship for Sports events for physically handicapped & Poor. At an auction in London in 2004, Vijay Mallya purchased sword of Tipu Sultan &

    some other historical artifacts, & brought them back to India for public display after

    nearly two century which was taken away after British assault on Srirangapatnam on

    may 1799.

    On 5th may, 2009 he brought back eye glasses of our national father Mahatma Gandhifor 1.8 million (app. 9.3 Cr) at an auction

    Provided an extensive drinking water scheme in Srinivasapura village and has beenactively involved in installation of Rain Water Harvesting structures at their Palakkad
