Clothing Suggestions Please consider the following in making your clothing selections:
The goal of a fine portrait is to direct the viewers eye to the face of the subject. All other elements
should be secondary. However, in today’s working world you want to have a variety of images prepared
for any number of uses. Formal, casual, professional, fun or serious… you may want to consider clothing
changes that reflect you and/or your audience.
Formal vs. Casual
Select a style of clothing that reflects both your tastes and the image you are attempting to project to
your client. If you business is more upscale or office oriented then formal attire will communicate that
best.
However, if you’re in a business that is more trendy or blue collar then select clothing that will provide
that type of feel. If you’re unsure or if you have multiple uses then bring a clothing change so that you
can have both styles taken. Simple long sleeved outfits work best for head and shoulder photographs.
Colors
As a general rule, medium to dark tones in solid colors photograph best for a head and shoulder
portrait. Darker colors are more slimming, especially if you are photographing against a medium to dark
toned background.
If you want to use “high key” or white backgrounds you can bring just about any color outfit, even white
shirts or outfits. White backgrounds are considered neutral and any style or color can be used. White
backgrounds are excellent especially if you want your image used for business cards or extracted for
digital purposes.
Makeup
Apply makeup that is natural for you. A little goes a long way to removing or softening lines. Our
retouchers will complete any additional enhancements you request.
Beards
Be sure to shave before your portrait, especially if you have a heavy 5 0’clock shadow. Facial hair cannot
be effectively removed from a portrait.
The previous listings are only guidelines. We want you to feel comfortable bringing in outfits that reflect
you and the image you want to project. If you’re not sure bring in a couple and our staff will help you
decide on what looks best.
