NAVAN LIONS CLUBNavan Lions Report: August 2017

President: John GeigerSecretarial Team: Mark O’Donoughue and Tony Fiorentino

Treasurer: David Grattan

It has been two months since I wrote a report and much has happened in that period. Firstly you will notice that we have a new president and we would like the community to welcome Lion John Geiger in his newly acquired role. The second important event was that at our end of year celebration, Lion Fred Hyde was presented with a very well earned Melvin Jones award. Those of you who are familiar with Lions know that Fred is the go to person for Barbecues, equipment and anything that Lions can do to help in a physical way. He also builds our floats for the Fair and supplies shelters and equipment for our car parking venture during the Fair. Navan Lions owes a lot to Fred and a Melvin Jones award is our way of showing how much we appreciate him. Mentioning the Fair is important as that event involved not just Navan Lions but other Lions groups as well. The Fair gives us the wonderful opportunity to raise money for our Welfare fund – thanks to the Generosity of the Medici pharmacy, The New Oak Tree, Andrew Deavy and Navan Napa Auto Pro for the loan of their parking lots, and also for the Hannah Billings fund through the 50:50 at the Demolition Derby. The prizes on Thursday were $306 and $750 on Friday. That means we added $1056 to the fund – which was used to help a number of families last year. And it is always worth mentioning that if you are aware of a family with a very sick child that could use a bit of financial help – please get in touch. Our process is free from bureaucracy, totally confidential and money is awarded without delay. As you may have noticed – it is not the Navan Lions Club who operate the entry points – that duty is served by Cumberland and North Gloucester Lions – who do a wonderful job. Our third activity – which allows us to have most fun, is the parade. We have often been awarded the overall prize –but not this year. We don’t worry much about winning or losing – we feel that it is a wonderful occasion in which to show that the Navan Lions Club is a viable, imaginative and thriving organization. This year we celebrated three birthdays - Lions International 100 years, Navan Lions 65 years and Canada 150 years with a large three tiered birthday cake – unfortunately it was inedible being made of cardboard. We had a number of clowns and lions and also a walking tea cup and saucer (me) and a walking teapot (Lion Don Macartney). We received a lot of positive feedback from the crowd – and celebrated with beer and sandwiches after the event. Several volunteers helped us – notably Lynne Lavallee (makeup) Calley Clysdale (lion costume) and Joanne Maika White (food).Did anyone recognise the Rev. Margo Whitaker in full clown makeup and costume – driving one of our tractors?

NAVAN NOTABLES A TALE OF THREE COUNTRIES!!

This summer, during the “Music in the Park” series, a wonderful team effort was begun. Sarah Sirvin and her brother, Jordan, were selling freezies to the music loving crowd. Sarah decided the proceeds would go to a young girl, Dominique, whom she met on her trip to Nicaragua this year. Sarah had gone down with the church group to help build 2 houses for 2 families. Dominique had scoliosis and needed an operation to correct her back. No surgeons in Nicaragua could do it. Somehow her family found a Special Doctor in Germany who would do the operation for a bargain price. What a kind and generous man!!! To get there, across the ocean, the family was raising money. Sarah made about $100.00 the first night at the park. The second night in the series, the Navan Lions Club was on hand to sell popcorn and lemonade. They handed over their proceeds to Sarah. On the last evening, Fred Hyde thanked everyone involved in the Series and then handed Sarah a cheque for $500.00 to add to her donation. When I went on Dominique’s “Go Fund Me” page I saw that Sarah’s Dad had donated enough to get Sarah’s contribution over $1000.00. Fantastic!! Kelly Sirvin has been forwarding Dominique’s mother’s comments on her daughter’s progress. Here is the last one I received:Dear all, We left the hospital on the 12th day after surgery. One week after she could walk for longer periods, sleeping the whole night and taking fewer pain killers. We have been able to be out almost every day, and she is now doing things we didn’t think possible, lacing her shoes, biking, walking. We couldn’t be happier. Many many thanks for all your support! We are incredibly grateful to God and to all of you for your support. Thank you, Mayella (Dominique’s mother)Such a heartwarming story and even more so in the re-telling of it. Sarah’s wish to help a young girl in another country get a chance at a normal life is a kind, generous, and loving act. What a grand decision you made, Sarah! Thanks to you, many Navanites shared in Dominique’s remarkable recovery! We all wish Dominique a healthy, happy, wonderful life.

THE RETURN OF THE “NAVAN GRADS”

With lights shining and on centre stage, the Grads leadership made an announcement that had been anticipated for weeks: the team was changing names to the Navan Grads.“This is where it all began for Grads hockey in 1974 and it’s an honour to repatriate the brand,” said Team President and General Manager Steve Barban at the announcement. He noted that Navan is the smallest community in Canada to play host to a Junior “A” franchise.“This is no small feat and yet another reason why the mighty village and its team are the envy of many in the hockey world. The fact that we can now call the Navan Grads as our own is yet another reason to be hometown proud. Way to go Navan!” Originally named the Navan Grads when the team came to town in 1974, the name was changed in 1991 to reflect the team’s centrality in Cumberland township. With amalgamation, there has been a growing clamour to rename the team and many fair-goers seemed pleased with the change.New jerseys will on display with the new season. As part of the name change, the Grads are excited to welcome the community as part of Navan Night on Sept. 17 at 3pm against the Kemptville 73s. Expect Grads players to come around with more details in the coming weeks.

GROWING UP ORGANIC

During the 16/17 school year, Heritage Public School’s parent council here in Navan came across a program called Growing Up Organic, which is a garden and farm-based educational program for children and youth. Parent council thought it was a great fit given the rural roots of the school, and researched the program with the intention of building raised vegetable/flower garden beds on school property for the teachers and students to use throughout the school year. The daycare on site, Children’s Village, offered to maintain the gardens over the summer months alongside their own planted gardens.

Growing Up Organic hopes to “foster a generation of children and youth with greater food literacy, life-long healthy eating habits, increased food skills, and an understanding of environmental health issues”. Garden-based workshops that are linked to the Ontario curriculum can be delivered on site at the school gardens in the spring and fall and include: seed saving, soil exploration, planning the garden, planting a garden, seed starting, and transplanting. There are links to the curriculum for grades 1-8 including Science and Technology, Health and Physical Education, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Geography. The gardens are popping up at many schools in the Ottawa area and are being conceptualized as an “Outdoor Classroom”.

After some research, and development of a proposal, the idea was well received by the principal and many staff at Heritage PS as well as the school board. With that, approximately 10 parent and grandparent volunteers set to work to build 8 4x6x2 raised garden beds on a sunny Saturday in July. 6 hours of hard work and the result is this beautiful garden area, accessible to all students and close to a water source for easy care and maintenance. The wood for this project ($2100 worth) was generously donated by Swank Construction Ltd, and the soil ($600 worth) generously donated and delivered by Laurent Leblanc Ltd.

Parent council hopes that in having these gardens, the kids can see where food comes from and can appreciate the work behind growing food. School gardens also foster a sense of community, of belonging, of working towards a common goal, of inclusion, and parent council hopes the gardens will strengthen relationships between the students, teachers, daycare staff, parents and community volunteers. The gardens may also encourage leadership opportunities, for example via the creation of a gardening club for some of the senior students at the school.

In terms of what to do with the produce grown? Nothing better than fresh veggies to eat at the school and daycare during nutritional breaks! The produce could also be donated to local food banks, which is a great way to give back to the community. The first crop will be planted in Spring 2018 and parent council is excited to see the kids forming and maintaining relationships, growing their own food from seed, and giving back to their community.

My name is Ben Lawlor and I am the Navan Fair’s 2017 Ambassador.I grew up here in Navan & attended St. Peter Catholic High School. My first part time job was at Cloverhurst Farms, owned and operated by the Edwards Family. In my last year of high school, I took a second job right here at JT Bradley’s. I currently work as an apprentice at Sega electric. My goal is to become a licensed electrician. Aside from the working world I fill in my schedule with hockey, softball,

curling and spending time with my family and friends. Navan has a real sense of community! Thanks to all who volunteer your time because with your help and support, events like the fair are possible. The fair is something I look forward to every year. I hope that everyone had a good time at this year’s Navan Fair.

Our summer trip was to City Hall, to see the Quilt of Belonging. What a grand, huge, beautiful quilt! It is made up of squares from every country represented in the citizenry of our great nation. 150 years old this year! With over 150 countries represented in the quilt. Stephen Blais, our city councilor, took a break from a meeting to welcome us to the display. Afterwards we went for lunch at the Lord Elgin. We then hopped the free bus for Seniors, available to all Seniors on Wednesdays, to take us back to Trim Road’s Park and Ride. The very next day, Nyam Bann and her W.I. Committee hosted the very first presentation by the Company of Fools on Bradley Convenience Store’s back lawn. Midsummer Night’s Dream was the Shakespearean comedy put on for our entertainment . It was a beautiful evening with no rain or mosquitoes and the perfect setting. Thanks to John Bradley for allowing us access to his back yard. Our first meeting in September is on Wednesday, September 13 at 7PM at the Navan Curling Club. Come on out and join us!

What a wonderful place in which we have chosen to live.

THE YELLOW BELLIED SAPSUCKER

by David Grattan and Tom DevecseriI must confess that since we removed our birdfeeders for the summer – mostly to banish those pesky squirrels from our back garden – bird activity around our house has diminished. However, as I was reclining in my garden chair guzzling a beer a few days ago – their right in front of me was a yellow bellied sapsucker investigating a wild cherry tree. I’ve noticed that they seem to like trees with sweet sap – our apple and crab-apple trees have been drilled extensively in incredibly regular ranges of holes by investigating birds. Nevertheless, according

to the literature, sapsuckers have utilized over 1000 species as sources of sap. Sapsuckers will continue their drilling in a horizontal line until they reach a abundant flow of sap – then they will proceed vertically. You wouldn’t know that by looking at our apple trees – they appear to have been machine gunned by miniature weapons from all sides. They also are known for making two kinds of holes - according to Cornell’s “All about Bird’s website” – they make “Round holes which extend deep into the tree and are not enlarged and rectangular shallow holes. The sapsucker inserts its bill into the hole to probe for sap. Rectangular holes are shallower, and

must be maintained continually for the sap to flow.” Interestingly the sap wells also attract insects which get stuck in the sticky sugary sap and provide a bit of protein for the sapsucker to enjoy. Other species such as humming birds also are attracted by the sap. So if you have a tree which has been drilled – you can expect to also see them – and interestingly – just as I was writing this Rachel mentioned a humming bird was in the back garden. The Sapsucker is truly migratory – spending the summer in Canada from East to West and wintering in the Southern USA and around the Gulf of Mexico. On Dec 18th 2013 Tom observed a YBS still in Ottawa. Interestingly - this is the latest in the season that this bird has been recorded in Ottawa. As for being yellow bellied – that is a bit of a disappointment – they are not very yellow and are quite hard to distinguish from other woodpeckers. Tom says to look for the red forehead on male and female and a red throat

on male/white throat on femalebordered by black. Also a heavy vertical white stripe on folded wing with mottled black and white back, belly and breast. Our more common Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers will have a very distinguishing white patch in middle of black back.Lastly, it is worth pointing out that they have not actually killed any of our trees that they have drilled – their drilling is controlled in such a way that the supply of sap continues to be available – maybe we can learn something about sustainability from them!
