Business Connexion boostsCloud Computing in Lagos, Nigeria

Business Connexion is Africa’s leading provider of Data Centre and Cloud Computing Services and on 21 April, we officially launched our highly efficient and secure Cloud Computing Services in Lagos, Nigeria offering local IT Services, reduced operating costs, increased flexibility and rapid provisioning times.

Business Connexion’s first Data Centre, based in Ikeja, Lagos, will initially offer IT Infrastructure-as-a-Service, Messaging-as-a-Service, SharePoint-as-a-Service and Lync-as-a-Service. We also offer Private Cloud to Enterprises and Governments, making our offering unique. Business Connexion is working in close cooperation with approved local resellers to develop regular releases of applications that are high on the priority list of the Nigerian small and medium sized enterprises (SME’s).

The rationale behind using a locally based Data Centre facility is to ensure customer data is kept in country, bandwidth cost is kept to a minimum, applications are not impacted by network latency and a Nigerian based service for Nigerians. We want to ensure that we provide Nigerian business big and small with secure, dependable cloud services.

“We are really excited about our Nigeria offering, because it is the realisation of our continued growth and development strategy for Africa. Nigeria’s economy has shown robust growth over the past decade and we have noted that key drivers of growth lie squarely in the telecommunications, construction, tourism, manufacturing, mining, agriculture, wholesale and retail trade, all areas in which our business provides ICT solutions.” said Benjamin Mophatlane, Business Connexion Chief Executive Officer.

Business Connexion has partnered with Parallels and Rackspace, both worldwide leaders in hosting and cloud service enablement. Parallels has delivered applications to more than 12 million SMEs worldwide, using cloud services developed to simplify and quickly deliver applications to SMEs.

Resources and applications can now be provided from this highly secure world-class Cloud Computing infrastructure, located in Lagos.

Business Connexion Nigeria has also applied for and has been granted Pioneer Status for the Cloud investment. This in essence means that all profits generated by the Cloud platform will be exempt from corporate tax for the next five years. This is a significant achievement and will go a long way to improving the profitability of the company in time to come.

Discussions for on-boarding onto our reseller programme were already conducted with various telco players in Nigeria during the preparation of our new cloud environment in Nigeria, and the first telco to sign-up with Business Connexion in Africa to become a reseller of our Software as a Service (SaaS) offering is Vodacom Business in Nigeria.

Dear Colleagues

The year has gotten off to an exciting start for Business Connexion, and I am extremely proud of the progress we are making to achieve our ambitious growth objectives.

Recently when Group Exco met for a strategic review, we agreed that although we have the right overall strategy in place, our current mission statement does not adequately reflect the broad purpose of the group. As a result, we’ve changed our mission statement to “To enrich communities by making the impossible possible, through technology”

We believe that this statement is extremely important because not only does it describe what we do as Business Connexion Group, but it also reflects why we do what we do and it creates a ripe platform for us to tell the stories about what truly inspires us.

Our company ethos is about making a difference by being socially relevant and enriching the lives of business communities, consumer communities, citizen communities and in the communities that make up the African continent and beyond. We thrive on making what is seemingly impossible, possible essentially through the use of technology in its broadest definition, including hardware, software, consulting and services.

One such example of our mission in action is our recent commitment to donate ICT expertise and services to the Hospice Association of

the Witwatersrand for one year – read the story on Page 7.

We are extremely proud of our new mission statement, and I would love to hear your feedback about how it can make a difference to you and your teams.

We, as a business collective, have worked hard since the beginning of this year: It was wonderful to see the passion and energy of our Sales team at the Group Sales Conference in January. And in February, it was great to witness an investment that is really a major milestone in growing our business on the African continent come to fruition when we launched our Cloud Services in Nigeria. And later on in February, because of our continuous and tremendous teamwork, we won a significant Water Affairs deal against fierce competition.

It’s always wonderful to hear the voices of the future leaders of South Africa – the youth. Our graduate programme is one that I am extremely proud of, so I am endlessly encouraged by our 2013 interns’ energetic spirit. Read their comments on Page 6, and remember that you too can play a vital role in their experience at Business Connexion, through sharing knowledge and skills and providing guidance to the young minds that form part of this developmental programme.

Business Connexion acknowledges exceptional effort, hence the existence of the Annual Aspire Awards, where we recognise Business Connexion’s top performers for their dedication and valuable contribution to the Business Connexion Group’s values. So I encourage you to take some time to nominate your colleagues, subordinates and line-managers for the Aspire Awards by visiting the portal on the Workzone.

We now look towards our Interim Results Announcement which will be on 18 April. Until the next quarter, I would like to say to all of you, live your lives with gusto!

Regards

Business Connexion participated in the Investing in African Mining Indaba hosted from 04 to 07 February at the Cape Town International Convention Centre for the first time this year.

In its 19th year, the Investing in African Mining Indaba is an annual professional conference dedicated to the capitalisation and development of mining interests in Africa. The Indaba is the world’s largest mining investment conference, the world’s third largest mining conference, and Africa’s largest mining event.

The event is attended by global professionals in various fields including Analysts, Bankers, Explorers, Financial Advisors, Financiers, Geologists, Governments Ministers and Delegations, Individual Investors, Lawyers, Mining Executives, Mining Services Professionals, Professional Investors and other industry stakeholders as well as highly esteemed members of the press from globally recognised media organizations such as Bloomberg, Reuters, Financial Times, Dow Jones, CNBC, and many others.

The conference gives companies a global perspective on mining, mining in Africa and facilitates cross-continental business networking and relationship building.

Business Connexion showcased its technological expertise, industrial (mining) and mobility solutions to over 7000 individuals representing more than 1500 international companies from 100 countries and approximately 45 African and non-African government delegations.Clive Kensley, General Manager for Mining at Business Connexion

said; “The Indaba was a perfect platform for exhibiting our capabilities in mining. It gave us direct access to international mining exploration and services companies with vested interested in the African mining value chain, as well as mining houses that have interest in technology solutions and professional services.”

The link between mining companies corporate strategies and sustainable development was a major focus point at this year’s event. “We were the only ICT company that exhibited at the Indaba, and it was impressive to see how mining companies want to transform their operations from being heavily labour intensive to being more automated through technology.” Kensley commented.

He added that although this will lead to staff cuts, the drive from both governments and mining companies is to create sustainable mining communities that can continue to sustain themselves in the event of a mines closure or restructure.

There were several panels with thought-provoking topics of discussion. The CEO panel discussion hosted by the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), specifically looked at how the environmental and social challenges mining companies face in Africa need to inform successful business strategies.

CEO’s including outgoing CEO of AngloGold Ashanti, Mark Cutifani and Nick Holland of Gold Fields shared their insights on the issue with delegates.

Sustainable development was also at the heart of former Gold Field’s Chair, Dr. Mamphela Ramphele.

“Mining contributed to 40% of the global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) last year and about R339 billion was spent in the South African mining sector, which means it will remain a focus area for us for a long time.” concludes Kensley. END

amplifying the power of Connective IntelligencetM - BusinessConnexionTIMES

Two weeks after launching our Cloud Computing services in Lagos, Nigeria, Business Connexion launched a Public Cloud Computing offering in Johannesburg, for the South African market.

The new offering will be available through select resellers who will be part of Business Connexion’s channel partner programme. This business structure allows us to build an ecosystem all the way down the business value chain including; independent software vendors, telecommunications companies, banks, distributors, and original equipment manufacturers amongst others. These business partners will play a role in the development and regular release of applications for specific vertical markets.

“Our reseller partners will be able to take our solution and customise it as their own offering and even brand when selling it” said Jacques Loubser, Business Connexion General Manager for Cloud Infrastructure Services.

This type of Cloud offering is the first of its kind on the African continent and is called Cloud Services Brokerage (CSB), and will allow our partners to offer Cloud Computing Services to small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) some of which have not had access to traditional on-premise basic IT services.

The Public Cloud computing offering, offers SMEs greater access to increased flexibility and rapid provisioning of IT services with no capital investment as these services are based on monthly or yearly subscriptions.

Furthermore, these businesses can now benefit from the flexibility to adapt to common challenges such as unpredictable and rapid changes in the business environment, shorter provisioning cycles and improved self-service, allowing them to de-risk their IT investments whilst increasing their efficiency levels.

Business Connexion is currently offering; Hosted Infrastructure, and the following Software as a Service: • Business email (corporate-class email, shared calendaring, task, and contact capabilities), • Business instant messaging (instant messaging and presence, voice and video conferencing and mobile applications), and • Business Portal (a flexible, customisable platform that enables document sharing, workflows, discussion forums, and more).

Similiar to our current Private Cloud Services offering for large enterprises, the new service offering will also be hosted in our Tier IV

Data Centre facility which has full redundancy and failover capabilities, electrical power storage and distribution facilities with expected availability of 99.995%.

“We are really excited about our Public Cloud Services offerings in the South African market because the demand for hosted services in South Africa and Africa continues to grow at an impressive rate, and because the majority of businesses in South Africa require these core IT services at reduced costs, we foresee exponential growth with this offering.” Loubser concluded. Business Connexion participated in the 5th annual Africa Energy Indaba this year, which was held at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg from 19 to 21 February.

As an Eskom-approved Energy Services Company (ESCO), we are gaining credibility not only as a technology services leader, but also as a company that offers leading energy management solutions that translate into efficient use of energy and lowered overhead costs for businesses.

The Africa Energy Indaba, presented by the South African National Energy Association (SANEA) and backed by the World Energy Council (WEC), is aimed at facilitating a dynamic forum for debating and exchanging solutions and ideas to tackle Africa’s contracts and challenges and to respond to the continent’s immense potential.

This year’s event attracted thousands of delegates from around the globe who were exposed to more than 300 senior level energy sector experts and decision-makers who are planning and developing the 21st century energy requirements for Africa. Over 50 expert speakers presented the latest and best industry practice and over 100 leading energy suppliers showcased the latest technologies, equipment and services.

Business Connexion took the opportunity to announce our recently signed partnership with SoFi software by PE INTERNATIONAL, the global leader in integrated product and enterprise sustainability performance – a company that enables organisations to achieve improved sustainability performance by helping them uncover sustainability performance gaps and improvement opportunities at a media event during the Indaba.

SoFi software is a tool to aggregate enterprise sustainability data and performance for energy, carbon, water and other environmental, social and financial indicators across company operations

PE INTERNATIONAL’s SoFi software has been ranked in the top five energy, carbon and sustainability solutions 2013 for the 5th consecutive year, according to The Enterprise Carbon Accounting (ECA) Report – an industry-leading buyer’s guide from the independent consulting firm Groom Energy.

The unique SoFi content libraries for peer benchmarking enhance Business Connexion’s services within Energy and Industrial Solutions and Business Consulting as well as our Energy Efficiency offerings where automation and tooling optimise asset energy consumption and Sustainability Consulting and Reporting.

This partnership puts Business Connexion in the unique position to offer a full range of services from one point of contact in Africa. This will result in direct benefits for our clients.

Jaco Moolman, Business Connexion Managing Executive for Energy and Industrial Solutions stated: “Our presence at this year’s Indaba generated a lot of interest. It helped highlight the fact that we offer leading solutions in this space. We had a lot of interest from service providers looking to partner with us in this very important area of industry.”

He added that although the energy services market is quite cluttered at the moment, one of our biggest differentiators is ability to offer holistic solutions.

“We foresee in the near future, a strategic amalgamation of large companies to offer real energy saving solutions,” he added.

Moolman further said that with the national electricity grid already under pressure, it is important that Business Connexion operates in an energy efficient manner as well as develop solutions that enable our clients to do the same.

In addition to the local market, Business Connexion is extending its energy efficiency expertise to its other regional operations on the continent. END

The next-generation enterprise application has to be mobile-relevant. It must be in your pocket, on your device, when you want it. This is according to Matthew Cook, Managing Executive for Application Services at Business Connexion, during his recent presentation at the ITWeb Business Connexion Application Services Executive Forum, in Johannesburg, where he spoke about Maximising Enterprise Applications. The event was hosted by Andre Vermeulen Business Connexion Managing Executive Application Services.

In a unique twist to application reviews, Business Connexion partnered with ITWeb, a leading technology-focused publishing house, to create a ‘wine-pairing’ app showcase where a variety of South African wines from a collective of wines estates were paired with Business Connexion’s leading applications including;

• Instant Payroll (White labelled for First National Bank) • TransUnion app (Helps car dealers obtain the full history of a vehicle)• Mobile Device Management (MDM) Security Software also called MaaS 360 (Allows companies to manage the mobile devices on their networks)

The event took place across all ITWeb channels, appealing to a range of senior management and IT decision-makers. Clients, guests, C-level and mid – to senior managers and media were invited to experience our apps in conjunction the local wines. Apart from the apps that were demonstrated, we also showcased our Business Intelligence capabilities that can help companies make informed business decisions from their existing data as well as a UCS, who demonstrated ‘Retail Enterprise Applications on the Go’ and highlighted trends in the retail landscape.

The event objective was to appeal to new Business Connexion customers by providing an informative event platform and investigating innovative new ways to solve business challenges using applications.

It was within that context, that Cook emphasised that although keeping abreast in today’s fast changing technology environment is key, organisations must also pay particular attention to the last-generation, or legacy, applications, which still remain relevant. Such applications

include COBOL (Common Business-Oriented Language) – one of the oldest programming languages that started losing popularity as far back as 1973, but still remains relevant in certain business and government environments.

According to a recent announcement from application modernisation company Micro Focus, there are still about 220 billion lines of active COBOL code in enterprise applications today. The company’s report also claims that COBOL still powers 70% of the world’s businesses.

“COBOL systems are responsible for transporting 72 000 shipping containers, caring for 60 000 patients, processing 80% of point-of-sale transactions, and connecting 500 million mobile phone users.” Cook added.

Paul Steenkamp, Head of Employment branding and First National Bank (FNB) Innovators was invited to address the event, and spoke about Innovation in the Workplace. Steenkamp shared that growing up, he wondered why most adults were so grumpy all the times. And he

concluded, at a very young age, that it had something to do with the work they did. Today, he firmly believes that innovation is the most fun anyone can have at work; creating a conducive environment for fresh ideas in the workplace.

“FNB Innovators is an employee programme designed to protect and nurture a culture of innovation at FNB. Employees are encouraged to share solutions that are not only of a technological nature, but can also be new unique and innovative business practices, which they get rewarded for” he said.

According to Steenkamp, companies that stay ahead of competition are those that embrace innovation in their cultures, strategies and business processes.

Business Connexion is the leading application development company in South Africa with more than 20% market share and with a proven track record in cutting-edge development initiatives aimed at releasing business value through the expert use of technology. We know that developing a next-generation application varies depending on the enterprise’s needs and desires and there is no one-size-fits-all development.

With the smartphone penetration rate expected to reach 80% in SA next year, Gartner and Forrester forecasts that one in every three dollars spent in the tech economy will be on mobile by 2016. One billion consumers will own smartphones by 2016, with US owners owning 257 million smartphones and 126 million tablets. By 2016, 350 million employees will use smartphones, with 200 million bringing their own into the office. Mobile spending will reach $1.3 trillion by 2016, or 35% of the technology economy, with the app market generating $56 billion by 2015.

Business Connexion therefore advises organisations to take advantage of their existing ICT investments and leverage them to provide mobile business solutions and with the boom, comes the issue of security. Whilst some organisations still issue employees with corporate phones, the fact is that in most instances people will have personal devices.

“Security is an important issue for organisations and at Business Connexion, we ensure that we cater for the challenges that clients face which include managing the amount of mobile devices that are supplied or already exist and have access to the corporate network, making sure that access is secure and does not compromise the network’s security.” said Cook.

Organisations shouldn’t try to prevent employees from bringing their personal phones and connecting them to the mail server or any of the enterprise backend environments. In fact, they should rather change the way they manage devices on their corporate networks by giving the necessary access instead of locking employees out completely, and just make sure that they put policies in place that control the type of information they are able to access.

Cook concluded that with the current trends, businesses are expected to double their current spending on mobile projects by 2015. END

Andre Vermeulen, Managing Executive of Application Services spoke on several media platforms in this quarter where he was interviewed about his position at Business Connexion as well as our Application Services.

Talk Radio 702Talk Radio 702’s John Robbie interviewed Andre about the ‘Kids First Aid’ Medical Aid App designed by Business Connexion and endorsed by Emergency Medical Training (EMT) practitioners that offers quick and clear instructions as to what to do in the case of an emergency. It received positive reviews from Talk Radio 702, Sasol and PPC and is on sale at R15.99 for Apple and Andriod phones.

YoTVWe had the opportunity to develop two Mzansi flavored apps namely; JanBraai and Table Magic for the launch of the new Blackberry 10 (BB10). Andre was interviewed by youth talk show Extension 4 on SABC 1’s YoTV and gave insight on how both of the apps work, why they were designed for the South African market and how application development plays a vital role in todays’ society.

Eric Stokes, Business Unit Manager also had an opportunity to inform the youth about Business Connexion and our BB10 Apps when he was interviewed on Y-FM’s mid-day news. END

“I believe that the internship program is a great opportunity for me because I have a keen interest in the Apps space, Business Connexion is a market leader in app development, therefore affording me the best opportunity for growth.”

July MoyanaServices Group: SO GSMC

“The internship program has been a good experience thus far, I have learned a lot during the soft skills training about being an effective communicator and listener as well as understanding business etiquette. I also got to understand the role of a customer in a business and what is meant by customer service.”

Johann CoetzeeServices Group: Software Developer

“The internship program is excellent! The hands-on experience that we continue to gain from real time projects is extremely valuable. I was a bit hesitant in the beginning, but thanks to the friendly and helpful employees who helped me settle in, I now feel like I’m part of the Business Connexion family.”

Nasreen ChamdaTechnology Group: HR Business Support

“The programme is a very good foundation for anybody in their chosen career path to grow and develop. My experience thus far has been amazing; I love the Business Connexion culture as well as the fact I have already been exposed to so much in my field; learning about how the business works and how my role fits into the bigger scheme of things.”

Tshidi MashaInnovation Group: QDD

The internship programme is a wonderful initiative as it affords us graduates an opportunity to be of value to the South African market. I have gained so much knowledge working within the QDD division. By the end of this internship programme I would like to be regarded as a person who came and conquered and ultimately being a permanent employee at Business Connexion.

Tashia NaidooHuman Resources: Junior Assets Administrator at EDCON

“I am really enjoying the internship programme because I have gained a lot of insight into the workings of the department I am in. I have now been given my own work to manage which has been going well thus far, and I am fitting in well with the team. I would certainly like to have gained more knowledge by the end of eight months which will hopefully enable me to be a perfect candidate for a permanent position within Business Connexion.”

Various induction ceremonies were held across our regional offices to welcome our new interns and we ran a competition that required the interns to come up with ideas on how the Internship Programme can be made more visible in 2013.

Businesss Connexion’s Deputy CEO Vanessa Olver presented four iPad Minis and an iPhone to the young minds with the best ideas at a ceremony hosted at the Fundi Auditorium in our Midrand office. Winners came from our various regional offices.

The Business Connexion Internship programme seeks to make a positive impact in the reduction of youth unemployment in South Africa by producing skilled interns that can ultimately be absorbed into areas of employment, whether at Business Connexion or any other organisation. END

The first Q Data Dynamique (QDD), Road Show that was hosted in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town during two weeks in January, showcased Business Connexion’s competencies in Human Capital Management.

More than 400 of our clients and over 100 Business Connexion employees attended the three-phase event that brought our clients up to speed with the Business Connexion Group strategy, QDD strategy as well as the current and future trends in Human Capital Management.

Herman Venter, Business Connexion Managing Executive for QDD said “The main focus areas of the road shows were consumerisation; the evolution of self-service in the HR environment, payroll outsourcing, HR analytics, globalisation and compliance with specific focus on taxation.”

The QDD executives gave several presentations on various updates to products and services. Herman Venter gave two presentations detailing these changes.

Daleen Meinhardt, QDD General Manager presented on Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and Payroll outsourcing.

Rob Bothma, QDD Pre-sales Specialist, shared insights on Human Resources and the why organisations should focus on Talent Management.

Gerdha Ochse, Senior Manager for Payroll Deductions at Q LINK presented an update on Q LINK’s Payroll Collection and Garnishee Order solutions.

Alan Goodway, Business Development Executive, outlined the process of analysing and managing exposure to risk and determining how to best handle such exposure by utilising a systematic approach to minimising an organisation’s exposure. He noted that an effective risk management system should include various policies, procedures and practices to identify, analyse, evaluate, address and monitor risk.

PriceWaterhouseCoopers, gave an enlightening presentation on the changes taking place from a legislative perspective, focusing on the new tax legislation and the Protection of Personal Information (POPI) act.

Our business partners – Northgate Arinso (SA), Symplexity and Infoslips – enabled clients to view their solutions and services, provided by Business Connexion, in an informal environment and either took part in discussions or showcased their solutions during the day.

“The event was a great success and we received fantastic feedback from all the clients who attended and we’ve already received a number of requests from clients to review our product offerings.” said Venter.

QDD is leading the Human Resources market with their Human Capital Management solutions. With the success of this first one, the QDD Road Shows will now be an annual event. With more than 700 clients to date, Venter is confident that the employee and client attendee numbers will continue to increase with every road show. END

Business Connexion’s new mission statement is descriptive of what we as a business have always believed in, ploughing back into our communities through the use of technology and it is with great honour that we recently committed to donate our ICT expertise and services to the Hospice Association of the Witwatersrand for one year, renewable on an annual basis.

We will be providing the hospice with email and Messaging as a Service, End-user Computing Services, Application Services, Advanced Managed Services as well as a Service Management Centre.

This initiative is being carried out in partnership with AngloGold Ashanti, which is a Business Connexion client, the hospice falls under the mining giant’s Corporate Social Responsibility programme.

Vanessa Olver Business Connexion deputy CEO and Services Division Group Executive said: “Business Connexion is happy to be involved in this initiative, as a company we are already promoting the use of ICT in education through our own Corporate Social Responsibility programme and this is an extension of our CSR initiatives in support of the health sector.”

The hospice was established in 1979 in response to the need for hospice care in the Witwatersrand community. Four years later the hospice purchased its first property in Houghton which was converted into a six-bed in-patient unit with five full-time staff members.

In 1985, the hospice purchased more property in the area with the assistance from mining company JCI and expanded its operations. Ten years, later

it opened its first facility in Soweto in the Mofolo Clinic grounds and in 1996 it opened a purpose built unit in Diepkloof. In 1997, the hospice opened an Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) crèche in Mapetla, Soweto.

Today the hospice has more than 150 full-time staff, including doctors, nurses, social workers, psychologists and spiritual counsellors.

Our contribution of technology services and expertise will go a long way in improving the hospice’s working conditions and service delivery because as a non profit organisation, its main source of income is derived through donations from corporates and individuals or from hosting fund raising events.

Arnold Beyleveld Group Manager for Marketing Operations and CSR at Business Connexion commented: “This involvement is a good example of how, through donating our time and services with clients, we can further our involvement in the communities in which we operate and broaden the scope of the sectors that we help.” END

Vincent Webber, a Principal Consultant in the Services Assurance and Improvement Department, was admitted to hospital in October 2012 after he had complained of a nagging pain in his foot. After a medical consultation, he was advised that his leg had to be amputated. It was only after the amputation, that he learned that an embolism had most probably cut off the blood circulation to the lower part of his foot and that as a result, he had to lose his leg.

“I was emotional and quite devastated because it was difficult to imagine life without my leg. I was uncertain about my job because I’m a contractor and I didn’t know whether I would be able to do my job properly or how my colleagues would treat me afterwards. More than anything else, I was really worried about becoming a burden to my wife and three daughters.”

One of the first things Vincent’s line manager did was to reassure him that simply because he was a contractor, did not mean that he would lose his job and that the business would provide him with the necessary support to assist him during the challenging period he was faced with. It was only after that, that he had begun to feel the load on his shoulders lighten slightly and he slowly began building up the courage he would need to get him through the operation.

Before he knew it, Business Connexion had been in touch with his family to offer them assistance through the Wellness Connect programme – the support extended further than what he had ever imagined.

“The way in which I was treated was just phenomenal, I was constantly exposed to people that were enquiring about my health and comfort and a number of my colleagues and management visited me in the hospital.” adds Vincent.

Andre van de Merwe, Business Unit Manager for Services Assurance and Improvement and Vincent’s manager said; “Vincent has proven himself to be a very caring person in our team before the medical injury, and during the rehabilitation process he still maintained a positive outlook on life. He took the bull by the horns and decided to make the best of his circumstance every day. He is a true inspiration to all of us.”

During his leave, his department moved offices and upon his return to work, Vincent found that his desk and all his belongings had already been moved for him, a gesture he says made his return to work effortless.

“My colleagues came to fetch my key and told me not to worry about the move as they would take care of everything.” he adds.

Last year Business Connexion in partnership with our wellness partner ICAS Southern Africa conducted a disability survey in order to get a better knowledge of the number of people with disabilities within the business and also educate their employees about people with disabilities.

“Business Connexion is a company that cares. It has employed people who care. My colleagues, managers and the Human Resources department made me feel special, they went way beyond their call of duty and the treatment I received was truly overwhelming.

Vincent has high praises for what he has described as a sign of good management and leadership. “I am very proud to be associated with Business Connexion.” he concludes. END

We sat down with high-impact entrepreneur Robert Sussman, founder and joint CEO of Integr8 to get insight into the DNA of this innovative company. Integr8 organically grew over a decade to become the largest privately owned infrastructure managed services company on the African continent, prior to being acquired by the Business Connection Group. The company is also the founder and operator of the only Nerve Centre on African soil. The Nerve Centre is a digital hub of highly skilled technical engineers, ITIL processes and a leaveraged cloud based technology platform that Integr8 uses to support, monitor and regulate the ICT environments of many of the country’s leading organisations.

BCX Times: Integr8 was formed in a garage with an initial investment of R300 000 from you and Lance Fanaroff (joint CEO), how did you grow from there to here?

RS: Placing the client at the centre and building our business around the client has always been our number one focus. Coupling this with a culture of innovation and an entrepreneurial spirit, together with being able to recruite and retain the smartest people, has enabled us to evolve into a well corporatised leader in our respective field. Keeping our business focused has ensured that Integr8 is always a leader in its field of infrastructure management and managed services. Growing organically ensured that we grew the company at a pace dictated by our clients and we kept this growth in line with our ability to generate revenues, acquire clients and develop our Intellectual Property (IP) base. We also place strong emphasis on converting this IP into structural property – property that is kept and retained within the organisation.

BCX Times: The company has a noticeable youthful and appealing brand. Tell us a little bit about that…

RS: We have always wanted the Integr8 brand to be sexy. It must be a brand that attracts clients and smart people. With this, the brand has become synonymous with entrepreneurial innovation, energy, speed and a strong ability to deliver. Our people have tremendous fun, and our clients can see it. It comes across in their client interaction. At the same time, we are deadly serious about work. We believe that bluring the lines between work and family life is important, so when we are living we are working and when we are working we are living. People must love what they do. The great thing about our brand is that the biggest ambassadors are our people, it forms an integral part of our work ethic and culture.

BCX Times: How many people does Integr8 employ and what is the company’s current footprint?

RS: We employ more than 550 professionals (300 permanent) across multiple offices in South Africa and Africa. Of course our clients can now also enjoy access to an additional 6,500 high skilled personnel across the broader Business Connexion Group. We invest a lot in our people because we want them to be top achievers – this approach has helped us to recruit and retain some of the most skilled people in the industry.

BCX Times: Integr8 was bought over by Business Connexion last year, how has the acquisition influenced your company?

RS: Integr8 was always a very attractive acquisition in the market, due to its leadership position in the field of infrastructure management and managed services in the mid-market corporate space, coupled with an annuity based business model, proven reputation, over a decade of successful trading and a future strategy that provides longevity. As it has proven to be difficult for the larger publically traded ICT companies to infiltrate this mid-market corporate market, which requires a particular delivery mechanism, Integr8 has always been on the radar of many local and international ICT giants. Integr8 was built organically from the ground up, to focus on this market space and has therefore always been perfectly positioned. Although there have always been strong relationships between Ben, Isaac, Rob and Lance, it was during Rob and Lances engagement with Richard Newton, CEO of UCS, that it became clear that the people and business of Integr8 and UCS/BCX shared the same inherent value system and perfectly aligned strategies to grow the business going forward. This was cemented further through the introduction to Jane Canney: Group Executive UCS, Matthew Blewett: COO, Lawrence Weitzman: CFO and their respective teams. Business Connexion was clear in that it wanted to acquire and retain everything that made up the Integr8 company – the brand, the people and the culture.

This layed out the perfect fit and opportunity for additional compounded growth of Integr8 across the continent in both the private and public sectors. Having access to even more diverse skill set in a multiple of ICT disciplines together with its critical mass and well entrenched market position in the enterprise space, will result in the only single company to be able to scale and deliver from the mid-market corporate space into the enterprise space across the continent.

BCX Times: What’s the future looking like for Integr8?

RS: We’re really excited about the future in that Business Connexion and Integr8 are now one company that scales from the mid-market corporate to the enterprise space, with clear delivery mechanisms geared specifically for these markets. We will leverage off each other’s respective competencies and provide one formidable force in the ICT arena, across the African continent and abroad. END

Business Connexion a SharePoint Conference 2013 Premier Partner ushered in the South African launch of Microsoft’s latest version of one of its flagship products, SharePoint. The SHARE conference was hosted from 11 – 13 March at the Sandton Sun hotel in Sandton, Johannesburg.

SHARE is the world’s only SharePoint Conference designed to help business users address business issues. It’s a vibrant and thriving community where delegates, partners and speakers have important conversations and pinpoint new and different ways to use SharePoint to get business results.

The conference was the result of careful research and development by Microsoft, which involved business professionals from more than 70 organisations across South Africa that collaborated with the SHARE 2013 advisory team and came up with 14 topics which were discussed during breakaway sessions that were presided over by 24 SharePoint experts included Philippe Morin, Business Connexion’s Business Unit Manager for Product Incubation and Jaco Rossouw, Business Connexion’s Head of SharePoint Solutions Centre of Excellence.

Under the topics “Getting Employees to Use the Tools you Give Them”; “Driving Change” and “Understanding Content Governance”, Morin and Rossouw unpacked strategies on affecting change in an organisation as well as effectively addressing the challenges of governance enabling companies to think authoritatively on how to approach internal marketing and HR strategies surrounding their users and SharePoint. Their discussion points included tips on uncovering and bridging the gaps in an organisation’s culture, understanding a company’s content and approach to its initial classification, driving SharePoint user behaviour including maximising on deployed functionality and ensuring that this incredibly valuable asset is properly utilised and not simply replaced by another technology down the line.

In another breakaway session presented by Philippe Morin; “Consumerisation of IT, the SharePoint 2013 approach”, he addressed the

changing needs of organisations today as well as the fact that consumers and end users are more technology savvy, and more demanding than ever before.

He also addressed the insurgence of the “App Worlds” that has created environments that provide quick solutions to personal and business challenges and how this affects organisations and impacts their business’s SharePoint use.

SharePoint is one of the fastest growing Microsoft products, which has been rated as the number one collaboration tool and is number three in Gartner’s Quadrant for content management solutions. Besides selling SharePoint services both onsite and in the Cloud, Business Connexion uses SharePoint to run both our Employee Zone and Work Zone intranet sites.

“These types of gatherings are vital for continuous learning and knowledge management. And on the business front, within the first two days of the conference, Business Connexion had already managed to get eight leads, which if successful, could translate into multi-million rand contracts.” said Rossouw.

The three-day event, which attracted close to one thousand attendees, provided an opportunity for Business Connexion to interact with other SharePoint specialist companies as well as current and potential customers.

There have been several improvements to the latest SharePoint features including a better search engine, BI capabilities, Cloud Computing capabilities, mobile as well as social media integration. END

If you used the Gautrain in February, you would have spotted our billboards on platforms A (B8) and C (B9) at the Sandton station, where we launched an exciting and innovative campaign. Rather than just creating a regular advertising campaign, we wanted to take innovation to new heights with the launch of our “Can you beat the Business Connexion Challenge?” campaign that used the capability of Wi-Fi proximity technology on mobile devices to test participants on their knowledge of Business Connexion whilst on the move.

For four weeks, commuters were engaged in an exciting competition where all they had to do was connect to their Wi-Fi or Bluetooth from any mobile device, engage with the billboards by memorising the icons, answer a simple question that popped up on their mobile device and stood a chance to win a new Apple i-Pad mini every week, by the time they reached their destination.

The “Can you beat the Business Connexion Challenge?” campaign was aimed at driving brand awareness and further entrenching Connective Intelligence™ as our ethos, whilst educating business people and the public about Business Connexion’s products and service offerings.

Winners were presented with i-Pads on a weekly basis and the campaign really showcased how smart technology can provide instant gratification. END

We launched the third and final phase of our evolved brand campaign in February this year, focusing on four products and services; Technology, Application Development and Mobility, UCS, Energy Efficiency and Industrial Solutions. This campaign continues to drive the message of “The route to a simple solution is usually extraordinary”.

This simplified campaign further entrenches Business Connexion’s brand positioning highlighting our Connective Intelligence™ ethos ensuring that our target market fully understands the campaign and the key products and services featured in the three phase rollout.

The 2013 campaign was rolled out externally on print, radio, digital and broadcast platforms as well as all our social media platforms; Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, YouTube and the Business Connexion Blog.

The campaign kicked off internally with the upgrading of murals across selected Business Connexion offices and thereafter with our exciting signature branded laptop skins, a great tool for all the employees that want to transform their laptops with the latest designs that carry our company message to the world.

Finally, we created two radio adverts, one designed to sustain awareness of Business Connexion and our products and solutions, the second a special advert aimed at beginning a conversation with small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in Africa, enabling us to position our SME products and services.

The adverts will run on Talk Radio 702, 567 Cape Talk, East Coast Radio and Algoa FM. The first advert aired on the 18th of February and will run periodically across these stations until the end of August 2013.

Please lookout for our internal awareness campaigns ‘Brand Geek’ and ‘On-Brand Behaviours’ that will be launching soon. Let’s continue to Amplify the power of our Connective Intelligence™. END

last year Business Connexion ran the “It’s New Day” campaign, an initiative aimed at engaging our employees in a fun and creative manner In the spirit of releasing your inner child.

The purpose of the campaign was to encourage employees to unleash their playful selves by creating a fun working environment and spreading the spirit of happiness across all of our offices.

As part of the campaign, we ran a competition that created an opportunity that put everyone at Business Connexion in line to win an all-expenses paid family trip to Disney land in the USA. To stand a chance to win, employees had to send positive thoughts, family pictures and weekend adventures to the Boom Mailer mail address.

Twenty finalists were selected from all the entrants and on 14 february (the day of love), Emile Jansen, Junior Systems Engineer: SRM Data Centre services, was announced as the overall winner at a popcorn and slush puppy celebratory event held at our Midrand office. Emile sent

through a total of twelve entries that comprised of photos and videos.“My two daughters were the inspiration behind every entry I submitted. when I told them about the competition, they told me how much they would like to go Disney land and I decided to do my best to make sure they get to do that.” said Emile.

Known as the “Happiest Place on Earth,” Disneyland is a theme park with five themed “lands,” where parents and children can have fun together whilst interacting with Disney characters.

“I am looking forward to being in another country and experiencing different cultures because I love travelling. Disney land has one of the biggest theme parks in the world and I am really looking forward to the water Park.” he said.

Did you know that one out of three people belong to Blood Group O, so the chances of this group’s blood being used in hospitals is much higher than for any other blood group. The South African National Blood Service, (SANBS), a non-profit organisation that provides human blood for transfusion, compare it to bread: If more people eat white bread than any other bread, then surely the supermarkets will have more white bread on their shelves, to cater for their customers’ needs. It’s a simple principle of supply and demand.

People with blood groups A and AB can become Platelet donors. Platelets play a vital role in blood clotting and prevention of excess blood loss. Although Group O blood is in high demand, the SANBS takes blood from all blood types.

Grace Dipale Business Connexion Executive for Human Resources said, “We support the blood drive because it is so much more than just donating blood, it’s a chance for people to potentially save a life.”To aid the SANBS in their cause, Wellness Connect hosts blood drives on behalf of Business Connexion on a regular basis, the 2013 timetable is as follows:

If you would like to know how to become a donor outside of Business Connexion, please do not hesitate to contact SANBS on 0800 11 90 31 or email: [email protected]

Business Connexion Blood Drive - Give the Gift of Life

CANSA Shavathon 2013Business Connexion took part in the CANSA Shavathon across all our regional offices. Under the theme, Spray it, Shave it, Stencil it or GEL it and our employees showed their support for the fight against cancer.

CANSA Shavathon is one of South Africa’s best-loved events in support of a very worthy cause, namely showing solidarity with those affected by cancer. Losing one’s hair is a common side-effect of cancer therapy – so shaving your head has become a symbolic gesture of support for cancer survivors.

Colouring your hair or paying a Bail Out Fee have become options for those who prefer not to shave, or who can’t shave on the day. This year marked the 10th year celebration of the CANSA Shavathon and this year, Business Connexion also had Hotdog stands for those who wanted to munch on something while spraying, shaving, stenciling or gelling their hair.

“It is inspiring to see our employees living our values and making a difference. I am truly grateful to those employees that heeded the call, pledged their support and volunteered to shave heads. I think togetherness is a very important aspect of our corporate lives.” said Grace Dipale Group Executive for Human Resources.

Last year’s country-wide Shavathon raised over R6,4mil, used 70 000 tins of spray and 1 600 clippers at 300 shopping centres and 400 workplaces.

This year, the CANSA Shavathon was held in workplaces and organisations from the 25th February to 01st March 2013 and in shopping centres on Saturday 2nd March 2013. We hope this year’s results are even better. END
