Business Continuity in a Non-Stop World: Why Traditional Methods Might Not Be EnoughDespite the hype around software-defined and cloud-centric data centres, the need to preserve and protect data and ensure the continuity of key business processes has never been greater. Yet the process of choosing a disaster recovery (DR) solution can be daunting. Here to help sift through the hype is the all-new seminar: Business Continuity in a Non-Stop World, led by disaster recovery and business continuity planning expert Jon Toigo. Join us for an in-depth look at the capabilities, limitations and promises of the latest disaster prevention and recovery tools and memes on the market. In just one half-day out of the office, you’ll come away with an action plan to build abusiness continuity and disaster recovery strategy that will protect your data and keep your company up and running through interruptions of any kind. –Rich Castagna, Editorial Director, Storage Media Group

Keynote Speaker

Jon Toigo is a 39-year veteran of IT and has developed business continuity plans for more than 100 companies. He has written 17 books, including four on disaster recovery planning, with the fourth edition of his Disaster Recovery Planning: Getting to Business-Savvy Continuity, published in 2014.

Toigo is Managing Principal Partner for Toigo Partners International, a consultancy specialising in IT consumer advocacy, data management and storage technology, and he is chairman and co-founder of the Data Management Institute, a professional organisation for those who create, store, manage and administer data and storage assets. DMI is now in its 20th year and has trained and certified nearly 100,000 data management professionals worldwide.

Jon Toigo is proud to be part of the TechTargetSpeaker Bureau since its formation in 2012, and has spoken at numerous TechTarget editorial events in previous years. Jon also writes a column for Storage Magazine every month.

Session DescriptionsSession 1— The Data is the Thing: Protect the Right Stuff with Right Tools

During Part 1 of the seminar, we’ll dive deep into the core elements of the disaster recovery and business continuity process: the protection, preservation, and privacy of the data itself. As traditional backup vendors struggle to reinvent their data copy approaches, and as security vendors seek to find ways to mitigate the risk of unauthorized access to and disclosure/corruption of data assets, the volume of data being created continues to increase at an unprecedented rate. Every organization has different requirements around what applications and data are critical and there are multiple dimensions that must be considered and addressed.

• Determine what data is mission critical and understand how business value of data and applications will dictate recovery strategies

• Discover the technologies –– from data management suites to object storage approaches that make it easier to separate irreplaceable information assets from data that supports less important processes

• Learn how to properly tier data so that you can apply appropriate protection and security services• Evaluate public cloud-based disaster recovery options, and find out which processes service providers

need in place, audited and tested for adequacy and suitability of purpose• Discover why just fielding multi-nodal storage clusters – virtual SANs – is not enough to protect your most

irreplaceable data assets

Session 2— Evaluate Strategies and Technologies for Operational ContinuityDuring Part 2 of the seminar, you will evaluate the strategies and technologies that are currently being promoted by the industry to enable operational continuity in the wake of a disaster. The rise of the software-defined datacentre has been accompanied by the emergence of the myth that there is no need for disaster recovery provision, and that clustering and high availability can take its place. This session will feature a “sanity check” on what new infrastructure models stand up to real world disaster avoidance and disaster survivability when the worst case scenario occurs.

• Explore the myth (created by the rise of the software-defined data centre) that clustering and high availability can replace disaster recovery provisions

• Evaluate the new strategies and technologies on the market that enable operational continuity in the wake of a disaster

• “Sanity check” how the new infrastructure models stand up to real world disaster avoidance and survivability

• Discover innovative approaches for consolidating infrastructure components for ease of management and monitoring -- including IBM’s latest System z offering and software defined data centre models

• Assess the capabilities enabled and the limitations imposed on continuity planners by the intersection of client mobility and cloud computing

PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER

• Align business and technology service requirements – balance risk and reward– The lower the RPO/RTO requirements, the greater the cost of meeting them– The higher the RPO/RTO requirements, the greater the risk of data loss & system downtime– The ideal solution meets or exceeds RPO/RTO requirements without compromises

• Look to remove complexity, revisit how and why data protection is accomplished

• Treat the source problem vs. the target symptom = Holistic data footprint reduction

• Change the playing field to your strengths and customers business needs

• Data protection strategy = people, processes, practices and products

Hybrid = Using multiple technologies in new ways

DATA LOSS IS INEVITABLEData is volatile…

Human errors occur…• Are you sure you want to delete? • Are you really sure?• You’re adamant you really want to permanently delete this incredibly important file? • Oops!
