Home to passenger car and truck assembly plants, bus and coach manufacturers and many
manufacturers of trailers and bodies, Belgium is a key player in the European vehicle industry
landscape� Moreover, there are also other manufacturers located there with a wide range of activities
going from commercial, marketing, research and development and engineering activities to central
European co-ordination, production activities, training and logistics centres�
There is also an abundance of suppliers focused on leading-edge technologies� The diversity of
manufacturers and assembly plants has over the years produced a rich network of parts suppliers and
service and software providers in Belgium� Today approximately 300 companies create added value
for the vehicle industry� These suppliers are engaged in a large range of activities: from research and
design to production, testing and certification�
Many of the suppliers are small and medium sized enterprises that frequently work together forming
a strong network�
On top of that, renowned research centers and universities drive the knowledge-intensive Belgian
economy� Together with the industry, they continuously search for new technologies that can help
shape the future� Colleges and universities here have been graduating highly qualified and specialized
young people for decades�
The Belgian vehicle workforce is renowned for its hands-on attitude, its customer and quality focus
and overall automotive mind�
Several research institutions, each with their own focus, perform far-reaching research for the vehicle
industry – from ride and control systems, via new materials and alternative powertrains and energy
sources, to electronics and ICT for vehicles�
There are also cross-project platforms that allow experts from companies, research institutes and
other relevant stakeholders to exchange ideas on issues vital to the successful commercialization of
e-mobility, i�e� the development of relevant infrastructure, vehicle usage scenarios, user acceptance,
impact on the environment, safety, and traffic regulations�
Finally, Belgium is the ideal bridgehead for companies wanting to make inroads in Europe� First of all
there is its location: right in the middle of the most prosperous and industrialized region in Europe,
with direct access to all the surrounding markets� And then there is its infrastructure with one of the
most modern and densest networks of roads, railroads and waterways in the world� Home to the
largest transshipment port for new cars on the continent, Belgium also has three other seaports, a
national airport and several regional airports�

Werknemers: voor elk wat wilsMet het flexplan kiezen 500 bedienden bij Audi hoe ze hun bonus uitbetaald krijgen. Projectleider Dankwaart Leen: ‘We creëerden drie clusters: work-life balance, een ICT-pakket en mobility. Werknemers kunnen dus opteren voor pensioensparen of extra vakantiedagen, een smartphone of tablet en een tankkaart voor medewerkers met een bedrijfswagen.’ Eiman El Hmoud, Manager HR bij Audi Brussels: ‘Groot voordeel: het systeem is jaarlijks aanpasbaar en kan meegroeien met ons bedrijf.’
Werkgever: sterker performantiemanagementEiman El Hmoud: ‘In functie van het behaalde resultaat kan elke bediende een ander budget besteden. Met het flexplan krijgen we extra hefbomen om te differentiëren. En er is een duidelijk verband tussen de individuele en de ondernemings- of afdelingsdoelstellingen. Bovendien kost het ons als werkgever niet meer, terwijl medewerkers een groter voordeel ervaren.’
Op maat van Audi BrusselsAttentia begeleide Audi Brussels bij de uitwerking van het flexplan en de communicatie naar alle stakeholders. Dankwaart Leen: ‘Zodra de bonus bekend is, kunnen medewerkers via een intuïtieve tool gemakkelijk simulaties maken. Bovendien leverde Attentia ons Nederlandse en Franse filmpjes op maat van onze organisatie aan.’

STOKOTA NV STOKOTA NV, a Belgian company established in 1963, is a manufacturer of road tankers for the distribution of fuel. In 1991, production and manufacturing of vacuum operated waste tankers was started. In the late 90’s most of the production was shifted to 2 production plants in Poland. In 2007 Stokota was taken over by Vergalle in Oudenaarde, who is active in the treatment of steel. All superstructures, semi-trailers and trailers are engineered and produced in-house.
Stokota NV is now existing for over 50 years, is a well-established company with over 300 competent and skilled employees and a market share that is still growing year after year.
The F&E division produces fuel tankers for gasoline, gasoil, domestic fuel and Jet A1 in aluminium, or steel. The Waste & Cleaning div. produces road tankers, mainly in stainless steel, for waste collection by using vacuum tanks. These units can be found in the chemical, petro-chemical industry and sewer cleaning etc. The W&C div. offers a full range of units. Vacuum units, combination units (vacuum and water high pressure installation for cleaning). Built on rigids or semi-trailers, tipping or non-tipping, ADR of non-ADR.
In 2014 Stokota acquired the Serrus technology of Moving Floor units. Stokota is able to deliver high quality and custom-made moving floor trailers. The MF portfolio consists of semi-trailers, trailers and rigids, in sizes that suits their different customers.
The strength of Stokota is to manufacture units in close collaboration with the final customers. These vehicles are large investments. Stokota understands this more than well and puts its entire team of sales people, engineers and production at work to satisfy the customer.
To meet the market, Stokota renewed in 2014 its entire machine park with state-of-the-art machinery, amongst them a full automatic robot welding station for all its aluminum tanks. A car accident is often the beginning of a long

After three years of development and testing, we developed a technology issued from the highest

and other harmful gases for any thermal engine. This technology also has the particularity

FMEC (Flanders’ Mechatronics Engineering Centre) is one of the research labs of the faculty
of Engineering Technology of KU Leuven, Technology Campus Ostend. The research lab FMEC
was originally founded by prof. dr. ir. Johan Catrysse in 1984 as a knowledge centre on EMC
(Electromagnetic Compatibility). In 1991, this resulted into a complete EMC laboratory providing
EMC support and test facilities to the industry.
As contacts with the local industry had shown that there was an increasing need for support and
test facilities towards the design of highly reliable electronic systems, a close cooperation with
Agoria was established in 2004. This resulted in the foundation of laboratory FMEC which focuses
its research and services on “Global Reliability of Electronic Systems” comprising:
• Electromagnetic compatibility and signal integrity
• In-house and in-situ EMC measurements
• Mechanical and thermal reliability of electronic systems
• Environmental testing and aging with special focus on Highly Accelerated Lifetime Testing

De opleiding wordt geflankeerd door het expertisecentrum “Duurzame Mobiliteit”.
Na een jarenlange expertise te hebben opgebouwd in alternatieve brandstoffen voor
verbrandingsmotoren zoals waterstof en methanol, verbreedde het expertisecentrum haar
onderzoeksdomein naar alternatieve aandrijfsystemen als geheel. De focus van het onderzoek
spitst zich momenteel toe op de samenwerking van de verschillende aandrijfsystemen in
voertuigen en de daarbij horende in-vehicle communicatie zoals CAN, Lin en Flexray.
Het expertisecentrum beschikt naast de klassieke garage infrastructuur over vier
vermogenbanken, AVL cilinderdruk meetapparatuur, state off the art emissiemeetapparatuur,

Cars, trucks, buses, agricultural machinery, off-road vehicles etc. are nowadays equipped with
numerous electronic modules with the most varied functions. To enable data exchange between
all these controllers, several network protocols have been developed, including CAN, LIN, MOST,
flexray. CAN (Controller Area Network) is currently the most important network and is extensively
used in numerous types of vehicles.
The bachelor study area in Automotive Technology at VIVES Industrial Science & Technology
department in Kortrijk has gained a great deal of knowledge and expertise on CAN over the
years. This centre of competence “In Vehicle Networks” focuses on the different high layer CAN
protocols for mobile applications such as trucks, buses, off-road vehicles, agricultural and forestry
machinery: SAE J1939, ISO11783 (ISOBUS), CANopen.
The centre puts this knowledge and expertise at the disposal of companies, universities and

The ‘Centre for Industrial Management, Traffic & Infrastructure’ of the K.U. Leuven does among
others research in logistics and traffic problems. One main focus lies on applying metaheuristics
to deal with complex real-life logistic problems. Research problems such as facility location,
scheduling problems and vehicle routing problems have been successfully tackled. The centre
also applies linear and integer programming models to deal with real-life scheduling problems.
Production planning, using Mixed Integer programming and metaheuristics. The research
unit specializes in (dynamic) traffic modelling tools supporting research on development and
application of uni- and multimodal transportation network design and optimization models,
Intelligent Transportation Systems including network traffic flow control and external effects

The Thermotech Research Group of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the K.U.Leuven

The Strategic Initiative Materials ‘SIM’ is a virtual research center with the mission to strengthen
the competitive position of the materials industry in Flanders. Originally set up as a “light
structure”, SIM is actually transforming into a “Speerpuntcluster”. The speerpuntcluster SIM will

The Flanders Institute for Logistics (VIL) is the innovation platform for the logistics sector. VIL’s
primary goal is to enhance the competitiveness of the logistics sector in Flanders through the
cultivation of innovation. VIL helps Flemish companies to develop innovative logistics projects
in order to boost their competitive power. It’s primary target group are shipping companies/
manufacturers and logistics service providers. Additionally, companies and government bodies
with direct or indirect links to logistics, such as terminal operators, IT suppliers, engineering firms,
employment agencies, construction and property companies, can also join VIL.

VIM develops mobility solutions which make the traffic of people and goods more sustainable.
Goal: stimulating the transition towards more sustainable mobility. This transition impacts
the economy, takes place at all levels of society and is of big importance for the environment.
Mobility is a broad sector and playing field, with a multitude of actors, disciplines, fields of action,
initiatives and target audiences. Therefore, VIM serves as a competence center and innovation

The Mobility, Logistics and Automotive Technology Research Centre (MOBI) is nested at the Vrije
Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and is a leader in electric & hybrid vehicles and in socio-economic
evaluations for urban mobility & sustainable logistics. The multidisciplinary team of over
70 specialists addresses the challenges that the transport value chain faces, by integrating
engineering, economic, social and environmental sciences and policy issues. It delivers
social, economic & environmental impact studies, decision-making support, modelling &
simulation, engineering and standardization. A growing number of industrial companies, public
administrations and institutes are showing interest in collaboration or direct contract research,
as they value the expertise that MOBI creates. This allows MOBI to respond to the increasing
environmental awareness and to the clear challenges faced by the policy makers, the logistics
and the automotive sector. Over the last 5 years, the centre has undertaken 21 European projects,
59 projects with the industry, and 61 projects funded by national organisations, representing
14MEUR for MOBI.
