Letter from the President of the BoardDear Chamber Member,

I wanted to take the opportunity to remind you of what you can gain from our Chamber membership. At this last month’s Luncheon meeting, some of you had a glimpse of that. Three of our members engaged us in a panel format conversation around senior care and their growing industry. They may appear to be in competition but they in fact each have a niche within the industry and they collaborate to give the best experience to each of their clients.

Working with each other in this fashion, you can create long lasting relationships, understand, value and respect each other’s expertise and business models, and can provide referrals to each other. This can make you the best resource for your customers. Not every prospect is a fit to our business. Like in the classic film, “Miracle on 34th Street”, by introducing a person to someone else who is a fit for their needs, you have gained a champion.

On another note, a big Bravo to the Young at Heart Professionals for the Happy Hour event they organized this past Tuesday, the next one being on October 24th. It is another great opportunity to network. I wish you all a great month and a wonderful start to the fall.

Vicky Gavrias, PresidentWebster Groves/Shrewsbury/Rock Hill Area Chamber of Commerce

The Chamber is pleased to announce the appoint-ment of a new board member, Shari Tucci of Reli-ance Bank. Shari has been a member of our Cham-ber. with a previous bank, and now rejoined with the opening of Reliance Bank in Rock Hill. She is already making a positive impact by bringing in new members, and serving on several committees, including the Heart of the Community. About join-ing, Shari had this to say, “I am honored to serve on the board of such a wonderful Chamber that truly puts its member’s interests first.”

Welcome Our New Board Member

A big Thank You to Jean Field, Liberty Tax Service of Rock Hill, and Andrew Chao of Farmers Insurance on Watson Road, who came to the rescue at the last minute and sponsored the appetizers for our Young at Heart Happy Hour for September. It was yummy and much appreciated by all in attendance.

Llywelyn’s Pub to raise $15,000 for breast cancer awareness in October

Through the month of October, Llywelyn’s Pub will be releasing a limited-edition pink LlyCup to add to your collection. The cups will be available at all seven St. Louis area locations for a minimum $1 donation to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. The restaurant chain invites you to join them in supporting the cause!

In years past, the fundraiser has exceeded their $10,000 goal. Our president, Tom Behnen, attributes this level of success to Llywelyn’s Pubs’ servers and bartenders. He says, “the staff is passionate about giving back to our communities. They work hard to make sure our donation goals are met.” This year, they will be working hard to promote and raise a lofty goal of $15k for the cause! Owner Scott Kemper explains that the annual fundraiser is “focused on providing services to women, but ulti-mately the goal is to find a cure.”

Getting rid of all sensory input allows the ‘constantly-make-sure-you’re-not-dying’ part of your brain to chill out for a second, allowing the creative, relaxed part of your brain to come out and play. Without the constant pressure of analyzing the world around you, your body lowers its levels of cortisol, the main chemical component of stress. Your brain also releases elevated levels of dopamine and endorphins, the neurotransmitters of happiness. Not having to fight gravity lets your muscles, joints, and bones take a well-deserved break. Without old-man gravity pushing you down all the time, your spine lengthens an inch, chronic pain is relieved, and your mus-cles get to fully rest. Unlike lying on a mattress, lying in water allows blood to flow freely all throughout your body. About 30 minutes into your float your brain stops producing its normal Alpha waves and starts churning out Theta waves. These are responsible for that ‘between-waking-and-sleeping’ state, and you make them naturally every night before you conk out. While it only lasts for a few sparse moments in your bed, you can achieve a prolonged Theta state in the tank, a state of conscious-ness that is usually only seen in children and people who have spent years practicing meditation.
