WE ARE A MIX OF OLD AND NEWLaunched ten years ago as the University of Cumbria, we are founded on the experience and tradition of well over 150 years of higher education, and are the product of the amalgamation of St Martin’s College, Charlotte Mason College and Cumbria Institute of the Arts.

CARLISLE

With a bustling city centre, beautiful surroundings and a wealth of history, Carlisle is a fantastic place to live and study.

Home to a castle which has dominated for nine centuries and also an impressive cathedral, this city is rich in both culture and heritage. In recent years, Carlisle has developed a thriving music scene and an abundance of places to eat and drink. The city hosts an array of high street shops and independent boutiques and is also within close proximity to the cosmopolitan cities of Newcastle, Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh due to its location on the West Coast Main Line and M6.

There are two University of Cumbria campuses located in Carlisle – each offering a different range of courses.

FUSEHILL STREET CAMPUSA ten minute walk from the railway or bus station and set on the grounds of a previous maternity and war-time military hospital, Fusehill Street is the university’s second largest campus.

Facilities include the Students’ Union, a well-stocked library, sports centre and gym, halls of residence, Skiddaw dining hall, Calva bar and a modern Learning Gateway building. The campus is also home to our new STEM* laboratories.

BRAMPTON ROAD CAMPUSOur Brampton Road campus is less than a ten minute walk from the city centre and is home to the University of Cumbria Institute of the Arts.

The campus contains halls of residence, a library specialising in arts resources, a theatre with two performance spaces, well-equipped studio spaces and The Works; an eatery which serves up both hot meals and cold snacks.

Lancaster is a vibrant and historic heritage city, home to two universities and around 15,000 students from all over the world. Ideally located just south of the Lake District and close to the Morecambe Bay coastline, Lancaster enjoys the best of both worlds when it comes to the great outdoors and is just over one hour’s train ride away from the metropolitan cities of Manchester and Liverpool.

As a student living in Lancaster you can enjoy all of the usual high street stores, plus a number of small boutiques and specialist shops. There are a selection of lively pubs, clubs and restaurants, a

castle dating back to Roman times, museums, a brewery, three theatres, cinemas and an eclectic music scene.

Our Lancaster campus is a ten minute walk from the city centre with a wide variety of facilities and services readily available including halls of residence, a sports centre and gym, a well-stocked library, a chapel and the Students’ Union. The View! offers dining with a panoramic vista of Morecambe Bay coastline and the Lake District, and with Williamson Park located next door to the campus you’ll never be short of an area to relax and revise.

LANCASTER

Thousands of tourists flock to Ambleside every year from the world over. This quiet little town hides a wealth of things to see and do in the heart of one of the world’s most well-known national parks – the Lake District.

On campus you will find a range of study facilities including a library, halls of residence and The Barn, which is a flexible, learning space with social and study

areas including a small café. The Rural Growth Hub offers entrepreneurial students a fantastic space for networking and seeking out placement opportunities.

This picturesque town has everything you would expect from a campus set among the fells of the Lake District, including quaint tea shops, friendly pubs and independent shopping retailers.

AMBLESIDE

With approximately 18.7 million visitors to the city in 2014, London has once again been declared one of the top 10 visited cities in the world. Although the University of Cumbria’s roots are firmly placed in the North of England, the institution has also been providing outstanding teacher training in the East End of this famous capital city for over ten years. The campus now also offers Professional Policing qualifications.

As a University of Cumbria student living in London you can enjoy excellent teaching in the fields of Education and Criminal Justice, dedicated library resources and fantastic transport links. The campus is an ideal choice for those living in the South who wish to study for a career in Education or in the Police Force.

The London campus is approximately a six minute walk from DLR Westferry and is on direct bus routes. Facilities you can expect to find include a university library, an on-site café and a faith room available for all students.

A UK guarantor will also be required for halls of residence. International students are required to pay their rent in full before commencement of tenancy.

UNIVERSITY-MANAGED HOUSESWe offer affordable, furnished houses close to campuses in Carlisle and Ambleside which we rent on your behalf. Benefits include:

PRIVATE ACCOMMODATIONMost students live off campus after the first year and some new students prefer to do so from the start. We only advertise or lease properties owned by landlords who are registered with the National Landlords Association and whose properties meet statutory safety regulations. Our Accommodation Officers will help you to find a house; the university holds a housing advice fair each year.

• Private sector houses are fully furnished and well equipped

For our Lancaster campus, we are now in partnership with Lancaster University Homes who operate an approval scheme for student housing in Lancaster. All of the properties listed have been checked that they comply with current safety legislation and that they meet their standards for quality and management. They have the backing of Lancaster City Council and a growing list of interested landlords.

UNIVERSITY accommodationLiving on campus (or nearby) is a great way to start your university social life and make new friends. University accommodation is all located on campus or close by and heating, lighting and internet access (through Ethernet and/or wi-fi connection) are included in your rent. Students can expect speeds of up to 20MB dependent on the appliance being used. On-site amenities often include laundry facilities, secure bicycle stores and recycling bins. Adapted rooms are also available for students with hearing/sight impairments or mobility issues.

DENTON HOLME STUDENT VILLAGEModern, self-catered flats located in the Denton Holme area of the city. The village is on direct bus routes to the Brampton Road campus, is a 10-15 minute walk from the Fusehill Street campus and is linked via a cycle path.

Please note: Denton Holme Student Village is owned by a private investor, managed by Derwent FM and with allocations handled by the University of Cumbria.

• 249 rooms within 25 town houses. Each house accommodates either nine or 12 residents

• Each house has a communal space on the ground floor, plus one en-suite room in the nine bed houses. There are two or three upper floors, depending upon whether it’s a nine or 12 bed property, each with four bedrooms and two shower rooms

• Resident parking is available at the halls; permits can be purchased at Denton Holme Student Village

CARLISLE accommodationOur Carlisle residences provide a mix of en-suite and shared facilities. Bedrooms are organised into flats, each with a shared kitchen area. The university also manages a number of privately owned, off-campus, furnished houses within close proximity to campuses.

WADDELL HALLOn campus, catered, single study bedrooms arranged into flats for six to seven students. Waddell Hall is the largest halls of residence on the Lancaster campus.

MILL HALL Off campus, self-catering hall set in a beautifully restored mill on the canal-side. Contains single bedrooms and shared facilities and is less than a 15 minute walk to campus.

Students starting in September 2017 at Ambleside will have access to five, newly-renovated four-storey townhouses. Each house will accommodate up to 14 students and will comprise a total of 71 en-suite bedrooms, including two disabled accessible bedrooms.

AMBLESIDE accommodationAs a student at our Ambleside campus you will have access to both single and twin-occupancy bedrooms with a mix of on campus and off campus options. The majority of these rooms are standard study bedrooms with a number of en-suite options available in Fairfield Hall.

AN EDUCATED INVESTMENT

When you study at the University of Cumbria you are investing in your future. We work hard to ensure your degree is worth every penny by helping you leave university career ready.

Here’s how it works;

• You don’t have to pay tuition fees upfront. You study now and pay later. This means repayments are based on what you earn, not what you owe.

• You only start repaying once you start your career. Even then, the terms are modest. You will pay around about £30 per month if your starting salary is £25,000 and it comes straight out of your wage automatically so no messy payment arrangement to make.

• A student from a typical background, living away from home while they study, would receive over £5,000 in maintenance (living cost) support. And that’s in addition to the tuition fee loan. The maximum level of maintenance support payable is over £7,000 and the minimum is nearly £4,000 – what you are entitled to depends on your household income.

• To cover your living costs, including accommodation, while you study with us, you can apply for maintenance support.

• If your starting salary after university is less than £21,000, you don’t make any repayments. Repayments only start when your salary exceeds £21,000.

As a University of Cumbria student, you’ll become a member of both UCSU and the National Union of Students (NUS). Together, we’ll put you in the driving seat of your education. Our motto, ‘Supporting and representing you to achieve your ambitions’ is at the heart of every action we take and decision we make. Our job is to help you make the most out of your university experience.

UCSU’s team of elected full-time officers work around the clock to enhance your time at university, assisted by our fantastic team of Student Academic Reps who aim to ensure that your academic and social experience is first-class. We’re passionate about helping you get the most out of your time at the University of Cumbria, wherever you’re based.

We’re also responsible for organising all sorts of events – from Freshers’ during the Welcome Festival right through to Graduation to help you meet new friends, build new skills and provide opportunities to enhance your student life.

Volunteering and student groups are two things we’re particularly passionate about at UCSU. Our proximity to the beautiful Lake District, as well as community projects in the cities of Lancaster and Carlisle mean that there are countless opportunities throughout the year to make the most of our wonderful locations and help others in the process. Stephanie is originally from a small town called St Georgen in Germany and moved to England for her studies at the university. After graduating in 2015, Stephanie won runner-up for her film ‘Funkenflug’ at the prestigious New Designers Exhibition, with judges describing the piece as ‘stunning’. The film is a short period drama about a fire in 1865 that destroyed most of the town, and was filmed on location in Germany:

“I absolutely wasn’t used to city life and couldn’t imagine moving to a big city. Carlisle therefore seemed a perfect option for me – it is still quite rural, but big enough to be called a city. The university was also a great size for me as many universities in Germany are completely overfilled and it’s no

Foundation entry is an alternative route into Higher Education.

Our four year, foundation entry-level degrees are designed for students who may not have the necessary grades for an honours degree programme or who are returning to study later in life.

To access the courses you should possess the equivalent of GCSE Maths and English at grade C or above and specific course entry requirements which are outlined on each course information page on our website. Flexibility around entry requirements is often available as long as you can show enthusiasm and aptitude in your preferred subject area.

Statistics have recently shown that students who finish their full foundation year qualifications achieve better degree results upon graduation than those doing the traditional three year degree programme, which just goes to prove – it’s not where you start, it’s where you finish!

FOUNDATION YEAR


TRAINING OUTSTANDING TEACHERS FOR OVER 150 YEARSThe University of Cumbria has been training teachers for over 150 years and is one of the UK’s largest providers of teacher training. This means that we have unrivalled experience of making sure you graduate fully equipped and prepared for a career in teaching and working in education.

We offer a number of different routes:

BA (Hons) with QTSThis is the main undergraduate route into primary teaching. This route involves practical time in school as well as studying at university. These courses can be completed in three or four years. If you’re 100% sure you want to be a primary or early years teacher, this route is an ideal choice.

Non-QTS degreeIf you are not sure about which age range you want to teach, then we would recommend you take a non-QTS degree, allowing you more time to decide before you continue on to study a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) after graduating.

PGCEA PGCE is an intensive, one-year course which equips you with the techniques and experience you need to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). You will spend at least 24 weeks in school, and with Masters-level study included, you will leave university prepared to hit the ground running in your new career. Some students also opt for a School Direct route in order to achieve their PGCE.

We have a wide range of non-QTS degree courses which will give you a good grounding before studying a PGCE. These include our Working with Children and Families course and also our Education Studies course. The UCAS points quoted for each course are explained in the UCAS tariff table at www.ucas.com.

Please note that there may be additional, specific entry requirements for your individual course. You must check the relevant course page on our website for full details: www.cumbria.ac.uk/courses.

For professional courses such as teaching, healthcare and policing you’ll be required to attend an interview. Similarly, applicants for art and performance-based courses are invited to provide a portfolio of work or to prepare for an interview/audition/workshop as appropriate. Some courses allow you to submit an ePortfolio.

BA/BSc/LLB (Hons)General entry requirements are that you need to be able to demonstrate evidence of ability in written English (for some courses this is by achieving grade C at GCSE) and one or more of the level three qualifications set out in the UCAS points tables on the following page.

The qualification entry requirements listed below and on the next page are some of the most common, but this list is not exhaustive. Please contact the Course Enquiry Centre if you are unsure.

A levels (A2)A minimum of two or three A levels depending on the course criteria. All A level subjects are acceptable, including General Studies.

ENTRY

We consider all aspects of your application, not simply your qualifications and grades. We consider your personal statement, reference and any relevant experiences as well as your academic background and performance.

AS levels (Advanced Subsidiary)Offers will be framed in terms of your overall achievement at the end of Year 13. For most courses, one additional AS subjects or three-unit Advanced Vocational Certificate of Education (AVCE) may be allowed to count towards your total tariff points.

BTECA minimum of Diploma/Extended Diploma is required, depending on the course criteria.

Irish Leaving CertificateA minimum of four Higher/Honours grade passes is required.

International Baccalaureate and European BaccalaureateA minimum score of 24 points is necessary in the International Baccalaureate and a minimum score of 60 per cent in the European Baccalaureate. Higher entry levels may be set for some courses.

Access to HE DiplomaA pass in a relevant Access to HE Diploma course is acceptable, though level 3 grades in specific subjects are stipulated for some courses and you may need merit and distinction grades.

Cambridge Pre-U DiplomaWe will accept this in combination with another level 3 qualification.

Progression/Advanced DiplomaWe will accept all lines of learning of the Progression/Advanced Diploma for entry, depending on course-specific criteria.

Entry to second/third year by Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL)We will consider applicants who have successfully completed an HNC/HND, foundation degree or equivalent relevant course with a minimum of 120 level 4 credits and 120 level 5 credits at another higher education institution. You will be asked to provide evidence of your previous study to determine suitability for admission. Applicants with extensive, relevant experience may also apply; please see our website for further details: www.cumbria.ac.uk/howtoapply

Foundation Degree/Diploma in HEYou are normally expected to have at least four GCSE passes at grade C or equivalent and to have one pass at A2 or equivalent. Check the course pages on our website for further information.

Foundation Year QualificationsFoundation entry is the perfect entry route to studying for a degree which will set you up for life. A new addition to the wide range of opportunities we already offer, foundation entry is an alternative route to accessing Higher Education and all the experiences you’d expect as a full-time student. This foundation year (year 0) develops and extends your study skills in preparation for the next three years of degree-level study. See course specific criteria on our website for further information. Applications are made online through UCAS in Autumn and Winter in the year before your course starts - courses start in September. However, you can apply outside these times with details on our course pages.

Pre-entry experienceMany of our professional courses expect you to have tested your motivation and commitment by having some experience in your intended career through paid or voluntary work, or by at least having visited a relevant department and spoken to professionals. You need to check the individual subject entry on our website and to reflect your motivation and commitment in your personal statement.

Health/DBS clearancesIn addition to academic entry requirements, if you are accepted onto any course involving a placement (for example, teaching, health/social care and sport) you will need a satisfactory occupational health clearance and/or Disclosure and Barring Service background clearance prior to registration. There is normally a charge for completing the DBS disclosure procedure. You will also be subject to any other national professional requirement introduced prior to your admission.

Value Based Recruitment for Nursing (all fields), Physiotherapy, Midwifery, Diagnostic Radiography and Occupational TherapyPlease note as part of the selection process for the above courses we assess potential students based on the values and principles of the NHS Constitution set out in the Value Based Recruitment (VBR) framework. Applications submitted after this date will be considered late and the course you have applied for might be full by this time; however, we will consider you for alternative suitable courses.

You are allowed to select up to five course choices; the UCAS application fee is £12.00 for a single choice and £23.00 for two to five choices. (Fees correct at time of print.)

WHAT MAKES A GOOD APPLICATION?We consider all aspects of your application, not simply your qualifications and grades. We look at your academic background and performance, relevant experience (particularly for professional courses where some voluntary or paid experience is required) and your reference. Above all, we look for motivation, commitment and potential – evidence that you can benefit from study at higher education level.

MAKE SURE YOU INCLUDE• Relevant qualifications/evidence of ability: check

our website for the specific entry requirements required for each course. Tell us your previous academic results and your predicted grades.

• A supportive reference, from your school or college, or an employer if no longer in education.

• A good personal statement. Explain clearly what attracts you to the course and tell us about your wider interests and experience. If you are applying for a course that incorporates professional training and placements, you should include any relevant experience or visits you have made in the workplace. Highlight your individual strengths and qualities, personal skills, capacity for teamwork, contribution to the community and your enterprise, originality and determination. Select some activities which bring out these qualities.

WHAT NEXT?When we receive your application, we will send you an acknowledgement and if you are successful at this stage you will get either an offer (with an invitation to visit the campus to which you have applied), or an invitation to interview on a particular date. If we are not able to offer you a place on your chosen course we will usually try to offer you a place on a relevant course and will contact you to inform you of this. Alternatively, if we think you are suitable, but cannot offer you a place on your preferred campus because of the level of competition, we will offer you a place at another campus if one is available.

IF YOU ACCEPT?The admissions team will contact you and send further information from February onwards about accommodation, and from May onwards about preparing to join the university. If you have any other queries, contact the admissions office for information and advice.

DEFERRED ENTRYWe welcome applications for deferred entry on some courses. If you have specific plans during your year out, indicate these on your personal statement as they may be relevant to your course and could enhance your application.

From 2009 the UK introduced a Points-Based Immigration System (PBS) for students coming to the UK from outside the European Economic Area (EEA).

Students entering higher education will need to obtain a Confirmation of Acceptance (CAS) plus finance confirmation to obtain a Tier 4 student visa.

UK education providers are licensed by the UK Visa and Immigration services. When students apply for their visa (or entry clearance) they will need a valid Certificate of Acceptance of Studies from the university. Please note that a CAS is not a guarantee that a visa will be issued.

The university will take reasonable steps to provide the courses and services as described, however, the university cannot guarantee the provision of any course or facility. Some circumstances, such as staff changes, resource limitations and other factors over which the university has no control, such as industrial action or a change in the law or the level of demand for a particular programme or module (please note that this list is non-exhaustive), may result in the university having to withdraw or change aspects of the programmes, modules and/or student services detailed in the Prospectus. This could include, but not necessarily be limited to, programme/module content, staffing, the location where the programme/module is taught or the manner of teaching delivery, and the facilities provided to deliver or support the programme. Where circumstances demand an unavoidable change or where it is necessary for the university to discontinue a programme of study, the university will take all reasonable steps to minimise the effect and all proposed changes will be notified to potential applicants who have registered an

interest in the relevant programme at the earliest possible opportunity as well as being reflected on the university’s website www.cumbria.ac.uk. In addition, any changes between this Prospectus and the proposed course and services will be notified to applicants at the time of making an offer.

Should you become a student at the university you will receive further documents describing teaching assessment and other educational services. Enrolment at the university will be subject to you complying with the university’s registration procedure and your acceptance of the terms and conditions of enrolment and regulations of the university (copies of which can be found at www.cumbria.ac.uk/AcademicProcedures). Should you enrol at the university you are personally liable for prompt payment of your tuition and other fees in line with the university payment timetable, details of which will be provided to you on enrolment. If you have outstanding, university-related debts, you will not be permitted to re-enrol at the university in future years. If you are in your final year of study, and have academic-related debt, your award may be withheld and you will not be permitted to attend graduation.
