The Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission partnered with theAlbany Area Chamber of Commerce to showcase some of Albany’s outstandingindustries.

This year the Albany-Dougherty EDC presented awards to four incredibleexisting industries: MillerCoors for Global Commerce, Thrush Aircraft for EconomicImpact, SASCO Chemical Group for Excellence in Innovation and CentralMonitoring for Good Life City. I would like to take this opportunity to say howproud I am to live in Albany. Our industries and businesses are amazing as theycontinue to grow and thrive.

Who knew that the MillerCoors Albany brewery accounts for 50 percent of allexports within the MillerCoors North American network; that Thrush Aircraft willcreate over 100 new jobs in the next three years resulting in a $10 millioneconomic impact; that SASCO developed a breakthrough product for theengineered wood industry that has alleviated the industry’s historical problemswith corrosion, adhesion release and cleanliness; and that Central Monitoring hascollected over 13,000 coats for needy adults and children?

So many positive things are coming from right in our backyard. Our glass is half-full and we should start taking advantage of the great things we have. Not only do we have awesome industriesthat are huge exporters, growing jobs, developing breakthrough products and great stewards to our community,we have an abundance of things to do and see right under our noses.

Now that summer is upon us, take a kayak trip down the Flint River, play a round of disk golf or just take astroll down our beautiful river walk. Albany is loaded with opportunities for quality family entertainment. Just asour “Think Local” program asks everyone to look at Albany businesses first before you click that buy buttononline or go out of town to shop, I want you to look at all that Albany has to offer in good family fun. We have aplanetarium, an aquarium, several history museums, a zoo, parks galore and the list goes on and on.

Not many areas our size can tout so many great venues. We just need to open our eyes and our minds andenjoy our great city and the fruits of its labors.

Thrush Aircraft manufactures aerial application airplanes in Albany for a global customer base. Thrush, whichhas been producing planes in Albany since 1970, will create 100 new jobs during the next three years, resulting in a $10 million economic impact. The new jobs will bring total employment at Thrush to nearly 300.Thrush recently designed and developed a new plane, which will be mostly used for surveillance and firesuppression.

“Growth will be coming rapidly,” said Thrush owner Payne Hughes. “Bringing 100 jobs into Albany from anexisting company will be huge, since mot of the money coming in sales will be coming from outside of theUnited States.”

The inaugural class of the AlbanyArea Chamber of Commerce’s Institutefor Leadership Development held itsgraduation Thursday, May 7, at the FlintRiverQuarium.

The Albany Area Chamber ofCommerce, assisted by its LeadershipDevelopment Committee, has built animpressive program designed to trainyoung professionals, build higherbusiness standards, and improvecommunity involvement. The Institutefor Leadership Development kicked offits first program in August of 2014. Itwas implemented to facilitatecommunity and Chamber involvementand teach a range of skills participantscould utilize in the work place. It is aprogram of foresight, built on the

premise that any professional can be aleader. “Leadership doesn’t just comefrom the top; it can come from manylevels of a business’ personnel andmanagement hierarchy,” said BárbaraRivera Holmes, interim president andCEO of the Albany Area Chamber ofCommerce. “The chamber is extremelyproud of the Leadership for InstituteDevelopment and of the graduates ofits inaugural class.

This valuable program allows ourmember businesses to identify leaderswithin their organizations and providethem with the skills and tools theyneed to succeed. The chamber isfocused on helping its memberbusinesses grow, and this program isjust one way in which we help our

businesses do that."The Leadership Institute is a nine-

month program, with participantsattending a meeting once a month witha minimum amount of time away fromemployment to make the program asconvenient as possible. Each classcorresponds with a chamber event, which serves to promote participantawareness. Erin Hutchins, a LeadershipInstitute graduate and the 21stCCLCprogram director of the Albany AreaYMCA stated that the program reallytaught her “what the Chamber does.”It introduced her to “businesses Ididn’t know we had” and gave herinsight into their importance. “Theimpact that they make is high and itwould be a great loss to the

community if they left.” As the youngest professional in the

program, Hutchins asserts that shereally benefited from the expertiseoffered. Hutchins explained how, priorto the Leadership Institute, shesometimes struggled in the work placebecause she was new to the area andyoung. The lessons in particular aboutpersonalities and how to deal withpeople in the work place providedHutchins with the exact insight sheneeded. Upon graduation, she said thatthe atmosphere at work “completelychanged.” She explained how it helpedher realize that things said at work “arenot personal. Some people take it thereand that’s when things getcomplicated.”

The emphasis the program gave onprofessionalism and the importance ofunderstanding different personalitiesafforded Hutchins the insight sheneeded to break through barriers at theworkplace.

“Each class focuses on a differenttopic and gives insight into a variety ofsubjects, from networking, to politicalsavvy, to dealing with people, topractical applications,” said Hutchins.

However, this year will be vastlydifferent from the previous inauguralprogram. Bridges Sinyard, vice chair ofthe Leadership DevelopmentCommittee and vice president ofAdams Exterminators, expressed thatthe emphasis this year was on refiningthe program to improve its overallquality.

An overnight retreat has been added

to this year’s agenda with severalobjectives in mind. The first aim of theretreat is to develop professionalrelationships and give the participants achance to get to know one anotherbefore the classes start. The retreat willbe held at Marine Corps Logistics BaseAlbany and the event will start off bypairing a mentor and participant basedon similarities and personalities. Eachmentor is asked to meet with theirparticipant once a month outside of theclasses to grow the mentor/menteerelationship.

“The goal here is to develop alifelong relationships,” Sinyard said.

“Becoming a leader in business is onething but we also want to see andencourage community involvement.”

After the 2014-2015 programconcluded, the LeadershipDevelopment Committee also saw theneed to bring in professionalfacilitators. It was a natural leap to

consider Columbus State University’sLeadership Institute for this role, aprogram with over 11 years ofexperience, and an organizer and hostof the Blanchard Leadership Forum.

Their Website states that, “Wedevelop customized programs thatidentify, define and nurture the criticalskills needed to develop effectiveleaders in business, government andnon-profit organizations.” However, theChamber only plans to utilizeColumbus State for approximately halfof the program.”

So with that in mind, the committeedecided to bring in select speakersfrom last year’s program to teach andinstruct the remaining half. Thecommittee’s goal was to find a balancebetween offering a professional andeffective program and one that alsofocuses specifically on localparticipation to provide the programwith the essence and spirit that isexclusively Albany.

As Sinyard said, “It’s intended to beanother feather in our cap. … We areunique in our program.”

It is the Chamber’s hope that theprogram’s graduates will continue toadvance in their individual businessesand eventually take part in theChamber itself. As graduate Hutchinssaid, “It’s good for the youngpopulation in Albany. This programserves to, “drive Albany forward …build young professionals in thecommunity. ... and gather leaderstogether to make Albany a betterplace.”

Each class focuses on a different topic andgives insight into avariety of subjects, from networking, topolitical savvy, todealing with people, topractical applications.

“There’s Only One Albany” resonated throughout the 2015Legislative Luncheon hosted by the Albany Area Chamber ofCommerce Legislative Affairs Committee at the Merry AcresEvent Center in Albany.

Each year, the Legislative Affairs Committee honors arealegislators for their accomplishments during the legislativesession, while giving them the opportunity to address thethe business community of our area. This year was nodifferent but it had a different feel as all the legislatorsexpressed that there was a oneness between them and theyall felt they were working together to make Albany andSouthwest Georgia a shining star.

“I can say, unequivocally, it was our best and mosteffective legislative session since 2002,” said RepresentativeWinfred Dukes.

Cynthia George, vice chair of the Albany Area ChamberLegislative Affairs Committee, began the program with a fewremarks and then introduced the area delegation. First tospeak was Senator Freddie Powell Sims followed byRepresentatives Gerald Green, Winfred Dukes, Ed Ryndersand Darrel Ealum.

To conclude the program, Bàrbara Rivera Holmes, interimpresident and CEO of the Albany Area Chamber ofCommerce, thanked the legislators again and presented

them with a framed picture containing the slogan from the“There’s Only One Albany” campaign and the artwork forthe campaign’s banners that are seen throughout Albany.“We thanked you all throughout this luncheon but hopefullyyou hear us thanking you throughout the year as well,” saidHolmes. “The theme for today is ‘There’s Only One Albany’and we heard it through the comments of our legislators. It’salways so encouraging to hear that.

“We know that on the local level we have embraced the‘There’s Only One Albany’ theme. To hear that that is carriedthrough to our state level is so encouraging,” said Holmes.“We know that a unified voice for Albany and SouthwestGeorgia is the only way that we will succeed. We have tohave a shared mission, a shared vision and a shared voice.”

Funding for the fine arts center at Albany State Universityand the completion of the student center at Darton StateCollege were two significant accomplishments for ourlegislators during the 2015 session.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEOIt’s a powerful call to work toward building a stronger, healthier and more economically-

vibrant community.

That force is what drives the programming of the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce, theAlbany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission and the Albany Convention & VisitorsBureau, and it’s what motivates volunteers to work alongside our staff.

A major source of pride for Albany are the small businesses and larger industries that makeAlbany home and that are successful because of it. Telling their stories of hard work, ofinnovation, of commitment to people and community is an honor, just as it is to work onbehalf of them to ensure a business climate that’s hospitable to growth, and to ensure that theyhave access to the tools and resources they need to be successful.

On pages 8-10 of this issue, we share the successes of four of our community’s existingindustries – MillerCoors, Thrush Aircraft, SASCO Chemical Group and Central Monitoring –which were honored by the Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission as its 2015Industry Awards winners. These companies are examples of the talent that calls Albany home.

Working hand-in-hand, growth can be achieved through a variety of approaches – byproviding valuable business resources; through thoughtful advocacy; by establishing a positive business climate; and bybringing visitors to Albany, to name a few.

At print time, the Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission had announced nearly 400 new jobs and thecapital investment in Albany-Dougherty County of $225 million. That’s a significant return on investment in the Albany-Dougherty EDC.

The Albany Convention & Visitors Bureau approaches economic development through tourism. As Albany CVB ExecutiveDirector Rashelle Beasley says, by “putting heads in beds.” In 2014, 13,000 visitors checked in at the Albany Welcome Center(managed by the CVB). In 2013 (the latest year for which figures are available), through the efforts of the CVB, tourism’seconomic impact on Albany was $213.85 million. Again, a significant return on investment. You can read more about theAlbany CVB’s activities and efforts on page 14.

Throughout this issue, as in all issues of Business, you can see and read about the many ways in which the chambersupports member businesses and the community.

Economic development is not an event; it is a process, and it’s one whose success requires honest and thoughtfulcollaboration among numerous people and groups.

Most recently, the Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission and the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce, through a management partnership, took a more formal approach to collaboration. Through this, the agencies are providinga strong and united voice for business in Albany-Dougherty County and serving as a central point-of-contact for allbusinesses – small, medium and large; new and existing. There’s Only One Albany, and by working together toward sharedgoals, so much more can be achieved.

The Albany Area Chamber of Commerce, the Albany-Dougherty EDC and the Albany CVB are proud to work on behalf ofAlbany, and proud to work alongside each of you as we, together, build a stronger, healthier and more vibrant communityand region.
