M a p l e w o o d Academy is engraved forever in the

hearts o f its students by the energy and talent of its

youthful musical leaders.

Ten years ago, Ad r ian Lauritzen came t o M a p l e -

w o o d Academy. Those ten years have seen the

musical interest and standard reach b e y o n d a l l that cou ld

b e expected or hoped .

The department has grown, and in 1942 Mrs .

.Lauritzen joined the teaching staff as instructor in voice.

In the years that M r . and Mrs . Lauritzen have

'been here each successive student b o d y has who le -

'heartedly accepted these people, no t only as esteem-

,ed instructors bu t as be loved friends.

These years have seen our leaders o f t o m o r r o w

.grow in character from their character, in g o o d fe l low-

ship from their fellowship, in poise from their poise.

N o w they are leaving for Un ion Co l l ege t o assume

responsibilities there.

As a memorial t o the place wh ich they hold in

t h e hearts of students and faculty, it is our t o

ded ica te t o them the "Map le Los" of 1944.

Tzuir2irr. for s s r v ~ e ELIEVING sincerely tha t he tha t winneth souls is wise, the a faculty and students of Maplewood Academy have entered

gladly the activities which develop the indlividual for service. < " The Sabbath School is a listenina post where God's message

is heard ; the Missionary Volunteer organization is a practice room for those who wish to grasp God's messages quickly and relay them with force.

I n the Seminaa., those who speak learn to give our doctrinal subjects logically; and those who listen become more thoroughly acquainted with the groundwork of our Faith.

The Literature: znd Correspondence Band has mailed out 50,000 tracts and papers and: personally distributed in the neighboring towns 7,000 more. Who can know the result?

Man.y earnest requests have been sent to God f rcm the prayer bands, where groups of students I=a,ve met t o discuss and solve personal problems. As a result of t he persevering efforts of prayer bands and. the personal work of students and teachers, twenty-one have been baptized during the :school year.

Evidences of the presence of God's spir i t have developed in. a noticeable -manner f rom time t o time.

T H E S T O R Y O F R E D W O O D

" I n t h i s ,,,,,, theye is a great abundance of these trees and because none cP the expedition recognizes them, they are named Redwood Crom their color." In his daily chronicle of the progress of Don Gaspar de Portola's expedition, Frey Juan Crespi had just set down the date, Tuesday, October 10, 1769. On that day, according to written record, white men gazed fo r the first time "over plains and low hills, well forested with very high trees of a red color, not known to us."

Frey Juan did1 not note, and did not know, that he had discovered one of the natural wondexs of the world-a liv- ing forest which dates back to the dinosaurs-victor in nature's great battle for su~vival .

Geologists say that the Redwood forest is hundreds of years old. It once extended over much of the m r l d . It ~es is ted earth-rending changes in climate and in the earth's crust. I t saw mountains and seas created and disappear. J t succumbed only to the great sheets of glacial ice which covered a large part of North America, Europe and Asia. In a small area along the coast of California which t h e glaciers failed t o reach the Redwood forest escaped the ice and c~n~t inued to grow, thus providing a direct, living link with pre-glacial ages.
