Businesses driving local growth and enterprise

As we settle into 2015, it is time to overcome new challenges and explore opportunities which come with the dawn of the New Year.

Business East Hants and East Hampshire District Council look forward to working with local businesses to take forward key initiatives such as the apprenticeship scheme, to take advantage of the opportunities and build on the successes of the past year.

2014 proved to be a year of great success for many of our local businesses. There was progress and recognition for businesses, from plastic toolmakers Amey Plastics reporting an increase in sales, to marine industry manufacturer

Tek-Tanks being highly commended at the annual Manufacturing Excellence Awards.

Strong demand for industrial and office space in East Hampshire signals the road to recovery for the local economy, with new businesses such as Sew Creative, opening locally and others are expanding to meet growing demand. Local commercial property agents reported a surge in activity in the last year and this has continued into the New Year.

Amidst the business growth, employers still recognise the importance of the local community, as demonstrated by Laleham Health & Beauty, whose staff spent the day preparing food parcels at the local Food Bank. The success of Training4Healthcare’s recent collaboration with Altonian Care has meant that their health care training will be repeated early 2015 (page 28).

And finally, employers’ dedication to young people, skills and apprenticeships, are showcased on pages 18 and 19. Apprenticeships remain a major focus for Business East Hants and East Hampshire District Council and we hope to build on the success of Get East Working Initiative in 2015.

I hope 2015 is a positive year for businesses and we can celebrate yet more successes.

David Joel Chairman, Business East Hants

A year of progress for Amey PlasticsProving 2014 has been a year of opportunity for manufacturing and engineering, Plastic Injection Moulders and Toolmakers, Amey Plastics, has had one of the most exciting times in its 30 year history.

Amey Plastics is reaping the rewards from striking out with a number of diverse marketing initiatives in the past year. The company overhauled its online presence at www.ameyplastics.co.uk, accepted invitations to attend industry and networking events across the South East and launched an online shop selling its own range of plastic lunchboxes.

Phil Scott, Sales Director, said: “We have felt a much-needed optimism and desire to push forward in the manufacturing and engineering industry.

“Our lunchboxes at www.ameyonline.co.uk started out as a little project outside our core business, selling to parents who wanted them for children to take to school but when promotional

merchandise companies started making enquiries, we joined the BPMA and there has been a substantial increase in sales.

“Being on the south coast we’ve always attracted business from the marine companies, but we have seen an increase in demand for designing and creating new products for this sector.”

Meanwhile, Amey Plastics won business from a raft of new clients, especially those in the Marine Industry, producing a variety of products ranging from nab shackles and winch parts, to 16W radiant interior lights and casings for torches.

With ten machines running thousands of units a month from its premises in Petersfield, Amey Plastics’ success is proof that engineering and manufacturing is still thriving in the region.

New business opens in PetersfieldWife and husband team, Jo and Steven Watts seem to have it all sewn up with their new business Sew Creative; a new fabric retail and workshops experience in Lavant Street, Petersfield. Tamara Melvin, runner up in the popular BBC Great British Sewing Bee series, officially opened the new shop on the 18 October 2014.

Steven and Jo come from the hospitality industry so enjoy working closely with customers and whilst having run businesses before, decided to launch Sew Creative to embrace Jo’s passion for textiles and crafting.

The shop sells a wonderful range of 100% cotton dressmaking, quilting and crafting fabrics from Liberty, Art Gallery and Makower including designs from Zandra Rhodes, Phillip Jacobs and Kaffe Fassett as well as threads from Gutermann, ribbons, haberdashery, wadding and zips. The shop is quirky with a very warm welcome; for example selling buttons by the shot glass or weight!

In addition to the retail side, Sew Creative also has two workshop studios, one dedicated to traditional sewing, the other to crafting. Here they offer dressmaking, quilting, screen and lino printing, lampshade making and felting courses for all ages led by experienced, enthusiastic tutors. All the workshops can be viewed and booked on their web site.

Petersfield Dental Practice wins 3 National AwardsPetersfield dental practice Meon Dental, owned by Dr Ian Hallam MBE, was recognised at the prestigious national MyFaceMyBody Awards 2014 by winning the award for ‘Best Dental Clinic’, as well as Highly Commended awards for ‘Best Smile Makeover’ and ‘Best Non-Surgical Makeover’.

The awards ceremony, which was held at the Royal Garden Hotel, Kensington, London, was attended by several celebrities including BAFTA nominated actress Kierston Wareing, Broadchurch actress Tanya Franks TV presenters and former X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent contestants.

The judges commented that Meon Dental was judged the winners because of ‘its clinical excellence, patient care and for providing the complete range of treatments in house, including advanced cosmetic treatments, implants and orthodontics. Also their aesthetics clinic, Meon Face, provides advanced facial aesthetic treatments and a full range of face and body beauty treatments’.

This success for Dr Hallam follows on from the award for ‘Best Facial Aesthetics Clinic’, which Meon

Face won in 2013 at the Private Dentistry Awards.

Dr Hallam commented, “Last year we celebrated serving the community of Petersfield and East Hampshire for 25 years and were recognised as one of the best practices in the country. Winning this award is an apt way to celebrate. We aim to achieve outstanding results for our patients and the many testimonials that we received show that our patients appreciate the caring service that we provide. I am very lucky to have a superb team of dental surgeons,

hygienists, beauticians and staff supporting me and we are very proud of our practice. This award is for them”.

To mark 25 years since the practice was established, Meon Dental made donations during 2014 to the Rosemary Foundation charity, which helps to provide care for terminally ill people who wish to live out their lives at home.

Beau-Port Kitchens and Interiors expand their range to meet demandBeau-Port Kitchens and Interiors at Bentworth, near Alton, report a growing confidence from customers. Mark Johnson, Head of Design and MD at Beau-Port commented: “We had a very busy 2014, seeing growing confidence from many new customers who are no longer hesitant about spending money on their homes. They see the huge benefits of adding value to their properties, with new kitchen and interior projects that also enhance the quality of their lives.”

Beau-Port has launched two new kitchen displays, a media centre display and a home study display at their 2,000 sq. ft. showroom. “We are constantly updating and refreshing our showroom to ensure that new and returning customers can see the very latest kitchen and interiors designs. As well as our bespoke traditional and Shaker style kitchen displays, we now have three contemporary kitchen displays and can design and create bespoke and contemporary media centres,

which are meeting the growing trend towards separate media rooms,” continued Mark Johnson.

Beau-Port has also seen a trend towards more open plan living with kitchen, dining and living space combined, with the traditional sitting room now becoming more of a media room, where the family can enjoy all the latest technology, movies, TV programmes, listen to high quality audio equipment and access the internet on their wide screen televisions.

New VentureAnother new development for the business is the design and creation of independent pantries or larders. These free-standing hand crafted pantries can be tailored to fit any space in any kitchen or utility room. “Although our focus is on designing and installing fitted kitchen and interiors furniture, it is great to be able to offer some free-standing pieces of furniture for those who

want to create an unfitted look in an area of their kitchen. One of the key benefits to having an independent piece of furniture is that when you move you can take it with you. Our hand-crafted pieces of furniture could also be the family heirlooms of the future, handed down from generation to generation.” concluded Mark Johnson.

A sample pantry is now on display at the Beau-Port showrooms, with customers able to order a bespoke pantry of any size, availing in natural oak or hand painted in a colour of their choice. With a wide selection of handles to choose from, each pantry is totally individual and unique. There is also a wide range of storage accessories and components available for inside each pantry, so it can be thoughtfully tailored to fit each customers’ needs.

A closer look at Hilltop GarageArticle by Anne Cleaver and appeared on www.clanfieldonline.com

Hilltop Garage has been established for over 40 years and, as the name suggests, overlooks much of the local area from its elevated position on the junction of London and Drift Road.

Last week I met Graham Parish, who in partnership with David Balchin, owns and runs this successful garage. They bought the business in 2000 as they saw the opportunity to expand, improve and manage the garage in the way they wanted.

Over a coffee in his office, Graham explained in more depth. Their aim, from the start, was to focus on

customer satisfaction. With over 7,000 customers on the books and with the majority returning year after year, they appear to have found a winning formula. However, the team are not complacent and strive to provide a ‘one stop motoring shop’ for their customers.

‘Your satisfaction is our reputation;’ is the foundation on which this business is managed, stated Graham, before taking me on a tour of the garage.

The garage has expanded over the last 14 years. Their number of vehicle lifts has increased to 7 and were all in use that day. I was shown the latest electronic diagnostic devices that are now vital part of the work carried out by the highly trained motor mechanics.

In this hive of activity, I was introduced to the team – 4 technicians, an apprentice and reception staff. They all live locally and were such a friendly, welcoming group, who between them, had decades of expertise that ensured that any type of car or van repaired, serviced or MOT’d, would be completed to the highest standard.

I left Hilltop Garage with the reassurance that my car would be safe in their hands. Which reminds me – my MOT is due this month!

ADP security officer saves client £000’s!A security firm has stopped two intruders in their tracks and saved Adams Morey, the local DAF Truck dealer, thousands of pounds worth of potential losses.

A security officer in ADP Security Systems’ remote control centre in Petersfield was watching the CCTV for client, Adams Morey Ltd in Basingstoke on the night of Sunday, 19 October 2014. Suddenly, at 2.27am, he saw two males coming through the fencing of the site. It looked to him as though they were about to try and syphon off some fuel from the vehicles. The security officer used a tannoy on the CCTV system to issue a warning, which was ignored at first but, on being repeated, the intruders left the site. The security officer then called the Police, as is ADP’s company policy.

Twenty minutes later and the men returned, having attempted to smash one camera, but when the warning was repeated one of them left the site, possibly to act as a look-out. The Police arrived and the men fled. The ADP security officer then was able to use the tannoy again to talk to Police and direct

them to the offenders, who were chased and detained.

Mike Fennell, managing director of Adams Morey Ltd, sent a personal thank you to ADP Security Systems: “This really proves to me that using your company, which are based locally, was definitely the right choice for our security across the Adams Morey group. I personally thank you for what you do and well

done on this issue at Basingstoke. A great result.”

The premises of Adams Morey Ltd are secured day and night, using a combination of security officers and modern, remote CCTV and alarm monitoring, as part of a complete security solution.

Duncan Codd receives prestigious engineering scholarshipDuncan Codd, a former Bohunt School student, was awarded a sought-after Arkwright Engineering Scholarship recently at a ceremony in London supported by the Institution of Engineering & Technology and the Lloyd’s Register Foundation. Duncan was presented with his Arkwright Scholarship by Principal Guest Dr. Stephen Payne OBE FREng designer of the Queen Mary 2 ocean liner. Duncan also met the organisation that is sponsoring his Scholarship for the next two years – QinetiQ.

Duncan, in collaboration with staff, has been one of the driving forces of the improvements in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) education at Bohunt School; he went to the finals of the Science & Engineering competition last year, encouraged the introduction of Arkwright within Bohunt and has been an inspiration to other students.

Neil Strowger, Headteacher of Bohunt School, said:

“The transformation of STEM education at Bohunt is a fantastic example of students, staff and the school working together to improve education not just at Bohunt, but also regionally, as shown by our winning of the STEM Leader Award in 2013 and TES Overall School of the Year in 2014. We are interested in outstanding results, but we are more interested in attitudes and expectations; this example of student leadership combined with ambition shows that clearly.”

The Arkwright Engineering Scholarships support young people from across the UK who have the

potential to be industry’s future leaders in engineering and technical design. During their sixth-form studies, Scholars receive £600 to support their technical courses and have access to a range of exciting opportunities to learn more about engineering, such as mentoring and company visits. Schools receive £400 per Scholarship awarded to their students.

Scholars are selected following a rigorous selection process comprising a detailed application form supported by a teacher’s reference, a two-hour aptitude exam and an interview hosted at a top engineering university. From a pool of 25,000 eligible students, this year teachers endorsed the applications of 1430 students. 410 Scholarships were eventually awarded.

Dr Martin Thomas, Chief Executive of the Arkwright Scholarships Trust said: “Numerous reports have shown that the UK’s economic

prosperity requires hundreds of thousands of new engineers and technical designers over the next few years. But numbers, alone, will not ensure our country’s future economic success. We also need some of these new engineers and designers to be modern-day Sir Richard Arkwrights or James Dysons – outstanding technical leaders able to guide our country to engineering success. Arkwright Engineering Scholarships help to develop this pipeline of top talent. Duncan and all of our new Scholars have passed an extremely tough assessment process and they have phenomenal potential as future leaders in the engineering profession.”

Employment, skills and training

19 East Hampshire Business News – January-April 2015

Leading the wayPassion, commitment and drive to succeed proved key for the first graduates in a pioneering scheme to support local young people breaking into the working world.

Hannah Codling, 19 from Waterlooville and Chloe Gibbs, 20 from Liss are the first graduates of the Norad Academy, which aims to support young people who have fallen under the radar of further education.

Mick Gibbs, group chairman of Norad Travel, launched the academy in 2012 with the aim to train young people and support the local community, ensuring those making their first steps on the career ladder have the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their education and background.

Chloe explained how her early perceptions of the academy quickly changed: “My first perception of the academy was that it would take us a while to understand the industry and to be confident within the company, however by joining the academy it has given me the opportunity to gain many more qualifications then I thought I would and within a very short period of time.

“We have also progressed within the company at a fast pace and are confident in what we do and the information we know as we have received all the appropriate training and learnt all the skills needed to work within the travel industry successfully.”

While proving a steep learning curve, the academy also offered a vital and realistic insight into the working world, allowing both apprentices to gain key skills invaluable for the workplace.

Hannah commented: “The biggest skill Norad has given me is probably the confidence to be able to interact with not only the clients, but with

my colleagues too as I’d never been in this sort of working environment before, which is helpful both inside and outside of work.”

Chloe added: “The academy has given me many skills within the travel industry and has built my knowledge hugely, but the main skill it has given me is the confidence to communicate with people on a daily basis and feel confident and happy whilst doing this.”

Both graduates have quickly found their feet at Norad, joining the team as trainee travel consultants with day-to-day responsibility such as assisting clients with travel quotes over the phone or via email.

Looking to the future, Hannah explained her key ambitions: “My main aim is to continue working and improving my skills and knowledge within business travel to hopefully work up to senior level consultant in the future. I would then like to work my way up within this industry.

Chloe commented: “I hope to progress through the different roles and levels within Norad whilst continuing to achieve qualifications within the travel industry.

My ambition is to eventually become a supervisor/manager/director.”

Norad Travel are travel experts, supporting our customers from the boardroom to the beach and everything in between. The experienced team deliver a world-class service that has positioned Norad as one of the fastest growing travel management organisations in the UK. Embracing your passion for food!Food Fiend Experience, a multi award winning business, offers a unique dining experience for corporate clients in an unusual setting.

Kathy Fitchett also enables small groups of individuals to embrace their passion for food and learn to create phenomenal cuisine in a relaxed and familiar setting.

Food Fiend Experience is sponsored by Kenwood and recently appointed as one of their Cookery School Partners. This is what Mark Swift Marketing Director at Kenwood had to say;

“We learnt, after further discussions, that Kathy also provides a “Dining Experience” this she tailor makes for her clients to produce a perfect menu that communicates specific messages to their clients. We jumped at the chance to get involved, imagine how difficult it could be to produce a meal for a food preparation manufacture to their clients; it was a hard “ask” but Kathy “came up with the goods”. We have had quite a few “experiences” so far and more booked. Every one of these events was unique. She is pre-briefed with information that she weaves into her presentation combining the products and ingredients. It was a totally entertaining “experience” for everybody. Food Fiend Experience gave us a sense of participation and involvement that provided a positive brand identity to our clients that was memorable.”

Kathy has continued to run her successful Food Fiend Networking events providing two tasty vegetarian courses and adding mini workshops prior to the

networking lunch which provides useful tips and advice for business owners.

Regeneration

Whitehill & Bordon: Hampshire’s Green Town

Regeneration updateA lot is happening in Whitehill & Bordon. The first major development site (Quebec Park) had been given planning approval for 100 zero-carbon mixed tenure homes and 100 jobs with work starting next year. Now, hot on the heels of that announcement we can report that the second site, Louisburg Barracks, also has planning approval – for 500 new homes, 500 new jobs and the first phase of a new road. Construction of the new homes on Louisburg will commence by the end of 2015 and work on the road will be start in spring 2015.

The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) owns both of these sites and has already appointed a development partner for Quebec Park. This is local provider Radian. The HCA is currently procuring a master developer for the larger Louisburg Barracks site. Over £11m in Section 106 contributions has been agreed (this relates to facilities which are required to be funded as a result of the development).

The main development site, which is owned by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation, and encompasses more than 100 hectares of

brownfield land, will be transformed with 2,400 homes, new jobs, a broad range of community facilities and a thriving new town centre. The planning application has been submitted and the master developer is about to be announced.

The team has also been raising the profile of the project at a London property convention - and this proved to be a really useful networking opportunity. We produced some new marketing brochures for this event which are available to view online at http://bit.ly/1ztApPR or if you would like us to post you a copy then please email [email protected]

We also have a general brochure which outlines the regeneration plans for the town. This is available to view here http://bit.ly/1tisdhH

Boosting Bordon’s Businesses We’ve also launched a new support package for businesses in the town, called Boost Bordon’s Businesses, and we are offering free support in marketing, customer retention

and other advice. We launched this after we carried out a survey with all businesses in the town, which we hand-delivered, to assess how we could give them more support. So we’re hoping this will give the town’s retail businesses a real boost. If you would like to be involved in this then please email Susan Williams on 07801 258595 or email [email protected]

Southern Entrepreneurs eventsThe Whitehill & Bordon Regeneration Team has recruited Southern Entrepreneurs to host a number of networking and training sessions for sole traders, small businesses and entrepreneurs from in and around Whitehill & Bordon. Please see the website for training sessions.

The Energy Savings Opportunities Scheme (ESOS)A local Environmental & Energy Management consultancy, Paul Downing & Associates, has recently been advising several businesses on the best way to comply with ESOS.

The new scheme is mandatory for large companies, although it is likely that it will eventually filter down to smaller organisations.

The scheme applies throughout the UK and originates from article 8 of the Energy Efficiency Directive. It is being implemented by DECC (The Department of Energy and Climate Change) and your business is likely to be in scope if, on the qualification date (31 December 2014) for the first phase of ESOS, you are:

• Anundertakingwhichhas250ormore employees

• Anundertakingwhichhasfewer

than 250 employees, but has: an annual turnover exceeding £50m and a balance sheet exceeding £43m.

• Partofacorporategroupwhichincludes an undertaking which meets criteria (1) or (2) above.

In simple terms, an ESOS Assessment requires participants to do three things:

• Measureyourtotalenergyconsumption

• Conductenergyauditstoidentifycost-effective energy efficiency recommendations

• ReportcompliancetotheEnvironment Agency (as the scheme administrator)

There is no requirement to implement the results arising from the four

yearly audit, however the idea is that cost benefits and identified payback will lead to companies trying to reduce energy use (and hence carbon emissions) once savings have been quantified.

Routes to compliance depend on many factors including current energy monitoring and reporting procedures in place, however in essence companies can either undertake a four yearly audit of energy consumption and submit an evidence pack or implement an energy management system certified to ISO 50001:2011.

i Have you provided well enough for your own security and for the securityof your family?

i Do you care about paying too much tax?

i Family issues and tax issues are complex. Professional advice is vital and can minimise tax.

i Many people are in second marriages and need to consider security for bothspouse and children of an earlier marriage.

i A well drawn up Will can last many years.

i Often it costs thousands of pounds toundo the damage done by a home-made Will.

If you die without a Will strict rules apply:• A long term partner has no inheritance

rights.• A married spouse may not be entitled to

your entire estate.• Orphaned children go into Care.• Children inherit at age 18 (a vulnerable age).

Lasting Powers of AttorneyLasting Powers of Attorney provide securityduring your lifetime.• These are probably the best insurance

Let’s banish business failure!

Despite rapid progress in the field of information and communications technology, business survival rates have remained at a pitifully low level.

The effect on those directly and indirectly involved is catastrophic, yet we persist with a totally discredited response. The blame game tends to be emotionally-driven, counter-productive and misguided. It also costs an absolute fortune.

The aviation industry hasn’t always been as safe as it is today. Before the Wright Brothers, your survival chances as a passenger in an aeroplane were little better than those starting a business. Yet, despite the rapid expansion of air travel, the risk of being the wrong sort of statistic has declined steadily. Successive advances, each presenting their own challenges, have delivered substantial improvements.

According to the UK Government statistics website, some 300,000 businesses fail or cease trading every year.Estimates of the number of root causes differ but the consensus appears to be about ten – and not 300,000! The cost of ignoring this carnage is mind-boggling. The UK’s private sector generates an annual turnover of over three trillion pounds. Avoidable repeat mistakes are causing companies and organisations to fail every week, yet apparently, the annual cost is neither discussed nor measured. Unofficial estimates suggest it could be hundreds of billions!

Deficit? What Deficit? The extra revenue generated by eliminating just half of these mistakes could create unprecedented, sustainable growth across the economy. What’s more, the improved survival rates would encourage more entrepreneurs to start or expand businesses, creating a virtuous cycle. It requires time and effort but others have already pioneered the way.

The potential pitfalls in business are just as well understood as those which can spoil your day in an aeroplane. The expertise and technology developed to evolve and share best practice in aviation, other transport sectors, the military and medicine are readily available. It just takes a commitment to adapt and engage – and acceptance of the need to find alternative careers for the redundant liquidators and bailiffs! Once the number of repeat mistakes has been halved once, why stop?

What holds back budding entrepreneurs? It’s certainly not a shortage of ideas, or talent, or determination. Could it be a fear of the consequences of failure? What if the number of repeat mistakes was halved just four times? With first year failure rates reduced from one in 4 to one in 64, new business ventures become potentially insurable. Future generations will doubtless be horrified to learn that up until the early 21st century, those seeking business loans were still obliged to use their homes as collateral!

From micro-enterprises up to multinational corporations, decision-makers are increasingly drawn to on-line interactive simulations. Running a virtual business also reveals “what you don’t know you don’t know.” Mistakes made in this environment are unlikely to be repeated in the real world. Paradoxically, learning how to recognise potential pitfalls and make adjustments before it’s too late is fairly easy. The tough part is recognising the need to do it. Some might suggest that business decision-makers should have a professional license, like pilots. We couldn’t possibly comment!

Advisers, coaches and mentors can now facilitate their own business games where the long-term consequences of policy decisions appear within minutes. Teams discover why each and every part of a business or organisation needs to excel, with decision-making based on best practice. It really is that simple!

Rates announcement a relief for small businesses, says local specialistThe Chancellor’s announcement of an extension of the doubling of small business rate relief and a 2% cap on business rate increases to April 2016, will be a welcome news for many small businesses according to a local tax specialist.

Doug Clanchy who runs TaxAssist Accountants in Liss said the announcement in the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement, would benefit independent shop owners, businesses operating from small office premises, local garages, pubs, restaurants, cafés and many more. He said:

“Although we’ll have to wait until the 2016 Budget for the much needed full review of the business rates system, these measures go some way to help to level the playing field between businesses which operate from shops and offices and their online competitors.

“Increasing the £1,000 discount on rates for pubs, restaurants and small shops with a rateable value of £50,000 or below, to £1,500 in 2015 is also good news and will help to encourage new businesses back to the high street.

“The £500 million lending pledge for small to medium sized businesses through the Enterprise Finance Guarantee Scheme, plus a £400 million extension to the British business bank Enterprise Capital Funds scheme, as well as extending the Funding for Lending scheme to boost bank lending to small to medium sized businesses, is welcome news for local business owners seeking vital finance for growth, but we will watch closely to see how this is actually delivered.

“Many local small businesses will also benefit from the abolition of employer National Insurance contributions for apprentices aged under 25, which will boost recruitment and training opportunities for young people, whilst the continued freeze on fuel duty is a clear benefit to business owners whose service is dependent on home deliveries.”

Legionnaires’ disease – business’ responsibilitiesLegionnaires’ disease is a potentially fatal lung disease caused by the legionella bacteria. The bacteria is naturally found at low levels in rivers, soil and lakes but when given the right conditions to multiply (such as a hot water system or spa) the bacteria, if inhaled in water droplets, can cause that person to fall ill.

Businesses have a responsibility to ensure that hot water systems, cooling towers and any other potential source of legionella under their control are managed so as not to put their customers, staff or the public at risk.

To find out more on the subject and what businesses are required to do, advice and documentation can be found on the Health and Safety Executive Website, www.hse.gov.uk/legionnaires/ or contact the East Hampshire District Council Food & Safety Team on 01730 266 551 or email [email protected].

Retail survivalThe Internet is having a devastating effect on traditional ways of selling and none more than in the retail trade. It’s now so easy to browse, buy and take delivery of the best value deals without leaving the comfort of your armchair. Is retail business dying?

The answer is ‘yes’ unless traders are prepared to embrace the revolution and find alternative ways to sell their produce.

One emerging answer lies in the rise in popularity of street markets. Shops put up glass barriers between themselves and their passing trade. Markets on the other hand give shoppers an even better browsing experience than the Internet– nothing is virtual, it’s all reality. They offer the ability to see, feel or taste before you buy and then bargain for the best deal. Department stores and supermarkets are more akin to the market concept. But open markets are also the nurseries of future business. Marks and Spencer

started life with a stall in a Leeds market.

We started a market in Grayshott to stimulate local trade and to let visitors see what our Village has to offer. Today, with over 30 stalls, half have foods to taste and buy – noodles from Nepal, sushi from Japan, curries from India and patés and cheeses from France, plus artisan breads, cakes and pies.

Other stalls include local produce, arts, crafts and antiques. If The Grayshott Market is anything to go by, markets can get people out of their armchairs and revive local trade.

Working together to improve access and provision of excellent care education Training4Healthcare, past recipient of Alton Chamber of Commerce “excellence in health care training award”, has successfully collaborated with Altonian Care in the delivery of health care training. Following the launch of Altonian Care in September 2014, a twelve week training programme covering all induction standards and key clinical / care aspects was agreed. The 2-3 hour sessions were scheduled for one afternoon per week, at a time to suit care providers and members of the public, who were also be interested in attending.

With the support of Alton Community Centre, a suitable training room was provided, so that the carer training sessions could be viewed as yet another useful service for the Community, provided within the busy Centre.

Making the sessions available to carers from other care providers, as well as family carers / members of the public, clearly demonstrates Altonian Care’s commitment to the local community.

Following the opportunity to attend a dementia care workshop, Xantia Quinn of Alton Community Club praised the shared learning experience as ‘it was a great insight into strategies that could help support people with dementia and their families.’

At the end of the initial twelve week pilot, evaluation revealed that this has been a very worthwhile collaboration, which will be repeated from January 2015.

Workshop details are available on the website and on flyers that can be found in the foyer of Alton Community Centre.

Alton’s largest employer does their bit for the community!Laleham Health & Beauty, Alton’s largest employer, spent the day preparing food parcels for local people in need. The Alton Food Bank is part of a UK-wide network of food banks which provides a minimum of 3 days emergency food and support to people in crisis. The volunteers who are based at the Mill Lane Site, packed food provisions into boxes to meet the extra demand of Christmas, at the distribution depot ready for them to be given to families in need. Don Johnson, Operations Director from Laleham Health & Beauty says “Being very much in line with our corporate policy it is fantastic that we have an opportunity to participate in our first volunteering project in conjunction with Community First HEH. Many of our staff have expressed their desire to help the local community

and to be able to help out at the Alton Food Bank is a great way of demonstrating our support for those less fortunate than ourselves”.

This is Laleham Health & Beauty’s first volunteering day for the Employee Volunteering Scheme, a service run by Community First HEH which matches local businesses to community projects that need support. Janet Duggan, Volunteer Co-ordinator from CFHEH, says “We are really excited to be working with Laleham Health & Beauty, expanding the scheme to East Hampshire. Having the support of business to support the community is paramount at a time when voluntary groups are struggling to find resources to keep going”.

Alton Food Bank has grown in the last 3 years and continues to provide a valuable provision

to people in crisis. John Jacobs, Alton Food Bank Manager says “Christmas is always a busy time for us. It’s great to have volunteers from local businesses getting involved and helping local people in need. Thanks Laleham Health & Beauty”.

Volunteers can undertake various tasks such as gardening, decorating, befriending, environmental tasks or share skills on an individual basis. Grayshott Pottery contributes to national memorialGrayshott Pottery are very pleased to have played a part in the recent unveiling of a significant Memorial to the Normandy Campaign installed at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire which was commissioned by the Spirit of Normandy Trust.

Designer and Sculptor Ian Stewart CM who lives in Beacon Hill, Hindhead, designed the new 30 feet long Memorial which is based on the geological undulating of the Normandy Coastline as seen from offshore and is constructed of granite to represent the severity of the task force facing the invasion force.

Phil Bates, Trustee of the Pottery said: “The handmade tiled panorama which is positioned to the centre of the Memorial, the map being hand painted, fired and donated by Grayshott Pottery and designed and decorated by Ian Stewart who worked closely with staff to achieve this unique panel which was originally incorporated on a 3 feet high brick plinth back in 2002 and then removed and placed on the new memorial.”

Phil went on to say, “There was a dedication Ceremony that took place at the National Memorial Arboretum on the 24th September 2014 where the Memorial was unveiled by HRH The Duke of Gloucester in the presence of more than 600 VIP’s and guests.”

Remembrance SundayOn 9 November 2014 Grayshott Village celebrated Remembrance Sunday with a memorial service at the Grayshott War Memorial led by Reverend Moray Thomas. This was a very important occasion as it marked the start of the First World War, a war that was to end all world wars. Hundreds of thousands of young men gave their lives to defend our right to have the freedom to choose our own destiny. We know from bitter experience that the First World War did not end all wars and they continue today. Young men and women continue to make the ultimate sacrifice to defend the rights of those who refuse to live under oppressive regimes.

The Government owes a debt of honour to the families and relatives of not only those who died, but those who have been adversely affected as a result of their military service. Despite its efforts the Government is unable to provide the level of support that Ex-Servicemen need. A number of Charities have been set up all over the UK to raise funds and support Ex-Servicemen and in Grayshott, The Royal British Legion (RBL) fulfils its role.

To mark this auspicious occasion and to celebrate the lives of our “fallen heroes”, The Gurkha Durbar held a buffet lunch of Remembrance Sunday to raise funds for the Grayshott RBL. A number of serving and retired servicemen attended the lunch. The funds raised (£200) were handed over to the Chairman of Grayshott RBL on Saturday 15 November 2014.

Home-Start Butser and WeyWater – support and friendship for families in East HampshireTogether the Butser and WeyWater Home-Start schemes support families with young children across East Hampshire, from Alton in the North to Rowlands Castle in the South.

Local volunteers with parenting experience are recruited and trained to support families who have at least one child under five years old. They visit families weekly for a minimum of two hours, offering them practical and emotional support.

Families are referred to Home-Start from many sources, including Children’s Services, Health Visitors, GPs and Housing Associations. The problems experienced by families are wide-ranging physical and mental health issues, including post-natal depression, multiple births, and isolation.

How your business can help Home-Start Butser and WeyWater are responsible for raising much of the funds required to provide their services. It costs around £1,000 a year to support a local family, Home-Start Butser and WeyWater currently support 154 families in East Hampshire.

Future tennis champion here in Hampshire needs your help!We are looking for financial assistance/sponsorship for our very talented 7 year old daughter Emma who loves tennis. As her coach Gary says “she is not a normal 7 year old she is the size of a 10 year old, with impeccable timing, superb cognitive skills and a real understanding of the game of tennis” and with her real love for the game it is a great combination for a future champion.

Although the manufacturers do not normally recognise players until the age of 11, Head have seen the potential in Emma and she has just signed an equipment contract, but we need financial assistance to help her continue training. She currently trains 4 times a week before and after school and when she is not training with Gary she is

still practising on the tennis court. There is no questioning that Emma has her eyes clearly on the prize of winning Wimbledon.

If you would like to know more about Emma please visit www.waughmantennis.com, where you will be able to watch Emma in action on the court, you can also hear the interviews she had with BBC Radio Solent and The Breeze, along with her weekly blog where you can learn about Emma on and off the tennis court.

If you would like to be involved in helping the future of British Tennis please contact me at [email protected], or fill out the contacts form on the above website.

Commercial property

33 East Hampshire Business News – January-April 2015

Property deals in Petersfield on the upOver the last three months, commercial property deals have seen a surge in activity according to Hampshire consultants Holloway Iliffe & Mitchell.

Across the town, industrial, office and retail space have been snapped up as local occupiers review their requirements and in many cases have relocated to expand their businesses as the local economy continues to see improvements.

IndustrialThe Directory Group has relocated to Viceroy Court on Bedford Road as the business expands its operations and increases its geographical reach. Established in Petersfield in 2005 with the initial Petersfield Directory, the business has flourished and now reaches an audience of over 89,500 homes through nine individual publications across Hampshire and West Sussex.

Commenting on the move, The Directory Group managing director Denise Lloyd said: “Moving to Viceroy Court was an enormous decision for the team. Having rented our premises at Heath Farm, we had outgrown these and took on additional space in Emsworth.

Being able to combine our operations into one building, which is owned by the management, is a really exciting move for the business. We all wanted to stay in Petersfield and Viceroy Court has been the answer. The purposed built unit is much more efficient and will enable us to continue to grow the business without having to compromise on space.”

OfficesRotherbrook Court on Bedford Road Business Park has also enjoyed increased activity with international medical device company, Alphatec Spine agreeing to take the whole of the ground floor. Rotherbrook Court was built in 2005 and is made up of 10 units ranging from 116 sq metres to almost 557 sq metres. Its high specification offices and excellent location have made it a popular destination for local businesses.

Expert Peripheral Designs, a specialist supplier of mobile and data collection systems, has moved into modern town centre offices on Dragon Street. Originally located at Viceroy Court, the opportunity to relocate to the town centre was an easy decision says managing director Bob Fenton: “Having been at Viceroy Court for nearly 15 years, the opportunity to move closer into the town centre was perfect for us. The Dragon Street offices are exactly what we were after and having been recently refurbished to a very high standard, we were able to move straight in.”

Commenting on changes in the Petersfield market, Holloway Iliffe & Mitchell director Stuart Mitchell said: “Over the six months we have seen a dramatic increase both in genuine enquiries and transactions across the town. Significant deals have included the sale of Tilbrook House to InSync Technologies and Old College to a private investor who is looking to redevelop the Grade II building to numerous small office lettings that now see much of the available space occupied for the first time in the last five years.”

Vodafone move into Alton Wadham & Isherwood have negotiated two lettings for the High Street, Alton.

Acting for private investment clients, Wadham & Isherwood Farnham have negotiated two lettings in respect of this prime town centre store. The extensive shop which was previously occupied by Boots is arranged on ground, basement and two upper floors providing some 1,430 sq. ft. of ground floor accommodation.

On receiving instructions and following an earlier attempt to let as one unit, advice was given that it would be more than likely that the shop would have to be split to generate interest. Following full marketing, interest in the lock up shop and basement adjoining Westbrook Walk was received from Vodafone who have now taken possession and are fitting out.

At the same time, a letting was agreed of the adjoining section plus

the upper floors to a local firm of Estate Agents who will be relocating to the property.

Wadham & Isherwood provided advice as to the building works required to split the building, coordinating the works and liaising with a local contractor. They also provided a marketing report to accompany the estate agents application for change of use to A2 which proved successful.

A combined rent of £47,000 per annum was achieved and the property will be retained within the client’s existing investment portfolio.
