Can you detail your journey so far?I reached at Sultanate of Oman in the year 1978 and worked at the Ministry of Defence. In the year 1990, I left my government employment to realize a bigger dream and started life as a businessman with a small shop, Mars, in Ruwi, Muscat. The business soon grew into a leading and preferred chain of hypermarkets in the Sultanate.

Mars International today is operating from two different countries with 21 outlets and more than 2000 people employed at different locations.

In the year 2002, I ventured into healthcare sector by setting up Badr Al Samaa, with few specialities in Ruwi, Muscat. The first thing that I noticed in the private healthcare sector during the beginning of 2000 was that no private hospitals provide 24 hours healthcare. Badr Al Samaa was the first private hospital to provide 24 hour treatment in Oman.

Badr Al Samaa group has now grown into the largest private healthcare provider with six hospitals and 3 polyclinics in Oman, known for its quality of care, compassionate doctors and affordability.

Over the years, the Badr Al Samaa group expanded into many countries in the GCC like Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and Dubai with the total employee strength of around 3,000.

My family has been the source of my strength all through my journey. My wife Premaja Vinod stands as a pillar of my support and strength. My eldest son, Mr Naveej Vinod, is the Executive Director of Mars Group & Badr al Samaa Group of Hospitals. My younger son Dr Nithin Vinod has completed his MBBS and is doing his PG in the United Kingdom.

Your retail and healthcare chain focuses on have-nots of the region expats and nationals alike. How and when did you initiate this?My policy in business is 'more volume and less price'. That is to give quality

products at a lesser price to our end users.

We broke many conventional rules in the healthcare sector in Oman with the launch of the Badr Al Samaa group. When the regulation consultation fee was 10 OMR, we provided consultation at the charge of 2 or 3 OMR. That ensured health care for everyone in the Sultanate.

What is your response for receiving the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award 2019?I am deeply humbled and happy to receive such a great recognition from the government of India with the prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award 2019.

How do you consider the support of Oman in your initiatives?I cannot thank His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said and the people of Oman enough for the positive environment of doing business in the beautiful Oman! The Ministry of Health, the Government and the people in Oman are very supportive throughout my journey. They gave a great reception as I won Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award 2019. Their love and support is quite commendable.

Do you have any expansion plan other parts in GCC and specially Bahrain? We do have expansion plans in GCC and our next destination is the Kingdom of Bahrain. Bahrain is the second most favourite place for me after Oman. We will enter the retail sector in 2019 itself.

Al Hilal Hospital, which is under Badr Al Samaa group has a great reputation in the Kingdom. There are plans for another hospital in the Seef area.

Bahrain is a great country that provide nourishing ambience for businesses with supportive Ministries, well-educated workforce and welcoming citizens.

“My policy in business is ‘more volume and less price’. That is

to give quality products and services at an affordable price

to our end users.”

Dr. V.T. Vinod, receives the prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award from Hon’ble President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind.

SPOTLIGHT

There is an interesting fact in my journey. My initial plan in the 1977 was to come and settle in Bahrain. It didn’t happen and that is how I had travelled to Oman.

What were the initial struggles that you had faced? How did you overcome them?I had twice tried to enter the business and failed before the success of Mars Hypermarkets. It was never an easy journey, but with dedication and passion, I overcame all challenges. As mentioned Sultanate of Oman supported me all through my journey.

What are the challenges and opportunities for healthcare and retail sector? There is a worldwide recession happening across. However, challenges are always there in any business. What we should do is to learn from these challenges; strive to overcome them with our capabilities and finally turn these challenges into opportunities.

What is your message to the NRIs in Middle East?Behold the values of honesty, dedication and hard work. These will lead you only to new realms of success

Is Apple Cider Vinegar The Secret to Great Hair?Apple cider vinegar is having a moment. As a seemingly collective obsession with natural remedies continues to thrive, ACV promises to make your skin clearer, your gut healthier, your hair shinier, and more. For hair especially, the supposed benefits of apple cider vinegar seem to be endless. But what are the actual benefits for your hair and how does science support these claims? Here’s what we found.

It promotes a healthy scalpApple cider vinegar is naturally anti-fungal and anti-bacterial. As it kills bacteria and fungus and prevents infection, it also eliminates common causes of dandruff, itchiness, and irritation in the scalp. Furthemore, as it balances the pH of your scalp (more on that later), it creates an unwelcoming environment for fungus and bacteria, thus preventing future irritation and itchiness.

It balances the pH of your hairThe natural acidity of human hair should generally help prevent fungi and bacteria; however, many mainstream hair care products are alkaline, and actually disrupt the natural pH of hair.

Dry, dull, or brittle hair is usually more alkaline, but a little ACV can help remedy that. The acidity in apple cider vinegar works to counteract high alkalinity, lowering the pH and restoring balance to your hair and scalp.

It eliminates product buildupSprays, mousses, gels, conditioners

and even shampoos can lead to product buildup, or residue left over in your hair and on your scalp. Product buildup then promotes dullness, flatness, and lifelessness in hair.

Luckily, apple cider vinegar contains high amounts of acetic acid, which helps eradicate product buildup and bring hair back to life.

It decreases frizz and increases shineOne of the main causes of frizzy hair is lifted hair cuticles; ACV decreases frizziness by actually smoothing down the hair cuticle, for sleeker, more tamed roots. Smoothing down the cuticle also increases your hair’s ability to reflect light, resulting in healthy-looking shine.

How to use itNow for the fun part. Apple cider vinegar should always be diluted before use on hair. Try mixing 1 cup of water with 2-4 tablespoons of vinegar and then slowly pour the mixture over your hair, massaging it into your scalp. Let it sit for a few minutes, and then rinse.

Vertigo - An Internal Conflict the differential diagnosis and tailoring treatment. Vestibular tests should be ordered after careful history taking and examination. Most patients are treated medically and with vestibular rehabilitation. In addition to the appropriate medical and rehabilitative managements, safety must be emphasized and discussed with patients and their families.

Treatment for VertigoTreatment for vertigo depends on what's causing it. In many cases, vertigo goes away without any treatment. This is because your brain is able to adapt, at least in part, to the inner ear changes, relying on other mechanisms to maintain balance.

For some, treatment is needed and may include:• Vestibular rehabilitation. This is a type of physical therapy aimed at helping strengthen the vestibular system. The function of the vestibular system is to send signals to the brain about head and body movements relative to gravity.• Vestibular rehabilitation may be recommended if you have recurrent bouts of vertigo. It helps train your other senses to compensate for vertigo.• Canalith repositioning maneuvers. Guidelines from the American Academy of Neurology recommend a series of specific head and body movements for BPPV. The movements are done to move the calcium deposits out of the canal into an inner ear chamber so they can be absorbed by the body. You will likely have vertigo symptoms during the procedure as the canaliths move.• An ENT Specialist can guide you

through the movements. The movements are safe and often effective.• Meniere’s disease patients may require the treatment including: a low-salt diet and intratympanic injections of the antibiotic gentamicin or surgical measures such as a shunt or ablation of the labyrinth in refractory cases.

Prevention• Anyone who experiences vertigo or other types of dizziness should not drive or involve in alert activities. • It may be a good idea to make adaptations in the home to prevent falls.• Getting up slowly may alleviate the problem. • Move your head carefully and slowly during daily activities.• Lie still in a quiet, dark room to reduce the spinning feeling.• Sit down straightaway when you feel dizzy.• Turn on the lights if you get up at night.• Use a walking stick if you're at risk of falling.• Sleep with your head slightly raised on 2 or more pillows.• Get out of bed slowly and sit on the edge of the bed for a while before standing up.• Try to relax – anxiety can make vertigo worse.

Vertigo, dizziness and disequilibrium represent 5-10 percent of all patients seen in general practice, and 10-20 percent of all patients seen by neurologists and otolaryngologists. By the age of 65, one-third of the population has suffered symptoms of imbalance. It becomes more common with age and affects women two to three times more often than men. Vertigo accounts for about 2-3 percent of emergency department visits in the developed world.

Vertigo refers to illusion of rotational motion. It means sense of spinning dizziness. It is a symptom of a range of conditions. It can happen when there is a problem with the inner ear, brain or sensory nerve pathway.

Causes Dizziness and vertigo are among the most common symptoms causing patients to visit a physician. Dizziness or vertigo, can happen at any age, but it is common in people aged 65 years and over.

The most common causes of peripheral vertigo include BPPV, vestibular neuronitis, Meniere disease, and immune-mediated inner-ear disease. The most common cause of central dizziness is migraine, frequently referred to as vestibular migraine or migraine-associated dizziness. Other central causes include demyelination, acoustic tumors, and brainstem or cerebellar vascular lesions.

There are numerous inner ear pathologies that are the direct result of disrupted ion homeostasis. While the initial cause may be something else (eg. inflammation, ototoxicity, noise),

the ultimate impact on the ear is the interference of some ion or water transport mechanism. Thus, impaired ion homeostasis is essentially the final common pathway for many inner ear diseases.

Symptoms and Complications A person with vertigo will have a sense that their head, or their surrounding environment, is moving or spinning. . Often it feels like a spinning or swaying movement.

Vertigo can be a symptom of other conditions, and it can also have its own set of related symptoms. Symptoms can last a few minutes to a few hours or more and may come and go.

These include:• Balance problems and lightheadedness.• A sense of motion sickness.• Nausea and vomiting.• Tinnitus.• A feeling of fullness in the ear, hearing loss.• Headache, sweating.

People with vertigo typically describe it as feeling like they are:• Spinning.• Tilting.• Swaying.• Unbalanced.• Pulled to one direction.Making the diagnosisObtaining a clear and accurate history and findings on vestibular examination are critical in identifying underlying causes. Auditory, vestibular, complementary blood and radiologic tests help in narrowing

RETHINKGUEST COLUMN

Change is in the air. Slowly but steadily and in a span of only few years, lifestyles have undergone transformation, and lives have changed beyond recognition.

Whether it is in the sphere of music, art, fashion, food or in the variety of ways we conduct our day-to-day activities, the differences we see are contributing to a generational shift in both attitudes and norms.

We live those differences ourselves today. Not as ideas or philosophical notions but as facts of life that impact our families — and more so, our parental relationships!

When I compare the relationship dynamics I had with my parents years earlier with the one I share with my teenage daughter today, I see a vast difference. Of course, there are positives and negatives to the way these interactions have evolved. There is a palpable impact in the way we communicate with each other, and in the dynamics adjust themselves to the differences. Thanks to technology, for instance, we find ourselves communicating with each other more on our small screens using emojis rather than the physical reality of one-to-one personal interactions.

On the other hand, as far as knowledge acquisition and information attainment is concerned, present

day children and teenagers are both demonstrating far greater awareness than their peers in previous generations. Nowadays, everything is available at their fingertips, and this leads to new challenges for parents. They need to be one step ahead, be familiar with current technologies as well as provide a safety net if required.

I believe that parents today have kept pace with these changes, and are succeeding with newer styles and techniques when it comes to parenting their intelligent children. The way technology has evolved in people’s lives has certainly affected their life-styles in so many aspects. There’s a thin line between using technology or allowing technology to use us and control our daily habits — or “the hamster effect”. This is something that each of us need to be aware of, and remain vigilant at all times.

I believe we need to give our children reasons to trust us by being responsive to their needs — and this goes for children of all ages. It doesn’t matter how old they are but we need to be at a place where the underlying foundation for all communication and interaction is trust.

The way we respond to our children’s needs has the ripple effect of building a trust relationship. What it will do is allow them to act authentically, be true

to their feelings, and tap into who they actually are.

The loving interplay between children and their parents is what great family life is all about — the young ones expressing needs in their own way while parents being able to decode those expression intuitively, provides the safe and secure foundation for our children. It will create a climate of trust and acceptance, and further reinforce the idea that we are on the same team wanting to see our kids happy and successful.

I would like to conclude with a quote from Khalil Gibran whose words are likely to make any parent pause and reflect.

“Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself. They came through you but not from you and though they are with you yet they belong not to you.”
