In November of 2016 Google began testing its new Mobile First Index. “This means Google will create and rank its search listings based on the mobile version of the content, even for listings shown to desktop users.”

Mobile searches are the majority now. Instead of crawling the web from a desktop browser point of view it now crawls from the mobile browser point of view.
