BUSKING FACTSHEET Buskers are welcome in Cairns as they contribute to a vibrant city. Buskers need a permit to busk and are asked to follow some simple rules to ensure equal opportunities for individual buskers while respecting the needs of residents, businesses and other people using our public areas. Most buskers will receive an Initial Permit allowing them to busk for 4 weeks. is permit covers activities such as singing, playing an instrument or puppetry - called Category A activities. Aſter 4 weeks, buskers can apply for a Standard Permit which lasts for 12 months. Buskers performing higher-risk activities, such as balancing acts and fire twirling, are not eligible for an Initial Permit and must apply for a Standard Permit. Category B buskers must also show that they are aware of the risks associated with their performance and have taken steps to protect themselves, their audience, other people and public property. ey also need their own Public Liability Insurance for $20 million. APPLYING FOR A PERMIT A Busking Permit Application form can be downloaded from Council’s website (search for busking permit) or collected from the Esplanade Office at 52-54 e Esplanade, Cairns. Buskers must submit their completed form, in person, to the Esplanade Office between 9am and noon on Monday, Wednesday or Friday. Please note, Council does not issue group permits. Each member of a busking group must have their own, individual busking permit. Busking permits are free. AUDITIONS Buskers do not need to audition to receive an Initial Permit. Buskers applying for a Standard Permit will need to audition. Auditions are a way for Council to ensure a high standard of street performance and ensure that busking equipment, props and materials are safe and appropriate. You will be given a date and time for your audition when you submit your permit application. UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOUR Council can cancel your busking permit if you do not follow your permit conditions or behave in a way that makes other buskers, members of the public, businesses or residents afraid or uncomfortable. is includes bullying other buskers; swearing or using vulgar language; inappropriate behaviour or sexual innuendo; nudity or revealing clothing; and any physical or verbal abuse or harassment. LOCATIONS Your busking permit allows you to busk at any of the CBD locations on the map on the back of this page. Please note there are a limited number of locations where noisy or dangerous acts are allowed. If you wish to busk in an area not on the map, or outside the CBD, please specify the location on your busking application. TIMES Busking performances are for 50 minutes, starting on the hour, between 8am and 11pm. Buskers have 10 minutes to set up and 10 minutes to set down. Category B (higher risk) Balance, juggling or circle acts; pavement art performances; those using percussion or noisy instruments; performances using flammable materials and chemicals, fire, fireworks, smoke flair or heated elements, knives, spears, swords, spikes or any other sharp implement.
