D a t e ( C o l o r o f b o x e s / b o r d e r s t o m a t c h c o v e r )1 9 J u n e 2 0 1 6Friends, I’m trying to come up with some profound memory from a Father’s Day past. Most of the memories that come to mind, however, just revolve around golf. There was the time my Dad and I staked out seats on the 18th Green at Winged Foot during 2006 US Open, only to watch Phil Mickelson lose the lead on the final hole of the final day (a tragic day for lefty golfers like me!). Or there was the time my friend’s 75-year-old Grandfather beat me by about 15 shots, all the while making sure to remind us how much better he was, and how much younger I was. But as I’ve sat here racking my brain for something profound my father may have said, some life lesson about being a man or a father, I remember, quite fondly,

that my dad wasn’t that sort of person. He was never the center of attention unless he was laughing—his was a ridiculous laugh. He was never one to make speeches or teach deep wisdom. He lived to teach by example: he showed mercy, he worked diligently, he loved his family absolutely. Thus, it wasn’t until Father’s Day 2009, three short months after he passed away, that I finally began to realize what Father’s Day and what fatherhood is all about—presence. His absence angered me. I just wanted to watch golf with him, to watch Phil Mickelson lose the lead…again! But he was not there. He had left me. When I revisit this moment, I think about Jesus, hanging on his cross, crying out to His Father, “My God, my God, why have you

abandoned me?” and take some solace in the fact that He too missed his Father—that he was angered by His Father’s absence. Even more, I strive to be like Christ who, instead of lashing out, channeled his raw emotion into still more love for us all. So on this day, which I hope is a carefree day of golf and cookouts, I offer my prayers especially for those who, for whatever reason, live without a father. I hope you know that God is with you always. I hope you love and serve with all your heart, despite the obstacles. And for those men, biological and spiritual fathers alike, thank you for all you do. Please, continue to bless us with your presence.

No

Rezando por Orlando Praying for Orlando

1 9 d e j u n i o 2 0 1 6

We pray this weekend for those killed and injured in the terrorist attack in Orlando, Florida.

We pray for the family and friends who grieve the sudden loss of a loved one.

We pray for those keeping vigil over the wounded in hospitals.

We pray for all those targeted for hate, especially for those in the LGBT Community.

We pray for first responders who risk their own lives to protect and serve. We pray for peace, healing, and justice.

Amen.

“Neither Violence or death wil l have the last word before God.” - Pope Francis

The Archdiocese of Boston offers and encourages prayers on behalf of those who were killed in the attack, those who were injured, and all their families and friends.  At this time our prayers are also with Bishop Noonan and the Diocese of Orlando, with the wider community of Orlando, and for our country, once again confronted by the face of hatred - Cardinal Seán O’Malley, Archdiocese of Boston

Statements from Notable Catholics on the Orlando Attacks

But I do know that despair is a victory for hate. Hate wants us to be too weak to change anything. Now these people in Orlando were apparently targeted for who they love. And there have been outpourings of love throughout the country and around the world. Love in response to hate. Love does not despair. Love makes you strong. Love gives us the courage to act. Love gives up hope that change is possible. Love allows us to change the script…So love your country, love your family, love the families and the victims and the people of Orlando…But let’s remember love is a verb. And to love means to do something.” - Stephen Colbert

“This is a moment to end this ‘us’ and ‘them.’ For there is no ‘them’ in the church, because for Jesus there was no ‘them.’ He consistently reaches out to those on the margins, bringing all people in. Those who are invisible to the community are seen by Jesus. By seeing them, by welcoming them, by loving them, he makes the ‘them’ an ‘us’…Catholics are invited to make every person feel valuable and visible, especially at times of loss. Jesus asks us to do this. The church needs to stand in solidarity with all of ‘us’ in Orlando.” — Rev. James Martin, SJ

For you here today and throughout the whole lesbian and gay community, who are particularly touched by the heinous crimes committed in Orlando, motivated by hate, driven perhaps by mental instability and certainly empowered by a culture of violence, know this: the Archdiocese of Chicago stands with you. I stand with you. - Archbishop Blaise Cupich, Archdiocese of Chicago

Oh, Maestro, haced que yo no busque tanto ser consolado, sino consolar;

Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love;

Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; Where there is sadness, joy.

O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek

to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand;

to be loved as to love;

For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;

it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life.

Amen.

The Pilot is an important voice in the public square that brings you the Catholic perspective on current events.

Inspired by the vision of our publisher, Cardinal Seán O’Malley, The Pilot covers it all — from in-depth reporting on Pope Francis to the good works of Boston parishes.

Each week, The Pilot brings you the stories of Boston Catholics who bring the Works of Mercy to life on a daily basis.

Proclaiming the present Holy Year of Mercy, Pope Francis said he wants to make it evident that the Church’s mission is to be a witness of compassion. “Let us not forget that God forgives and God forgives always,” Pope Francis said. “Let us never tire of asking for forgiveness.”

We invite you to join the Pilot readership today for only $19.95. This limited-time offer saves you 49% off the regular subscription rate. Thank you for your support.
