PRODUCT RISK ASSESSMENT-1, 3-BUTADIENE

Substance Name: 1, 3-Butadiene

EC Number: 203-450-8

CAS Number: 106-99-0

Molecular formula: C4-H6

Structural formula:

Product Overview:

1, 3-Butadiene is a colourless, non-corrosive, flammable gas with a hydrocarbon

odor. See Product Description.

1, 3-Butadiene is used as a chemical intermediate. See Product Uses.

1, 3-Butadiene is released in environment through various waste streams See

Exposure Potential.

1, 3-Butadiene shows toxic substance with carcinogenic and mutagenic effects.

See Health Information.

1, 3-Butadiene is highly flammable. See Physical Hazard Information.

Manufacture of Product:

Capacity: – RIL is the largest producer of Butadiene in Asia and the largest

producer in India with a capacity of 200 kTA. The Butadiene is manufactured at

Vadodara and Hazira units.

Process: Recovery of Butadiene from a Mixed-C4 Stream

This process comprises two distinct steps. First, a mixed-C4 stream containing

butadiene is co-produced in an olefins plant during the cracking of large-molecule

hydrocarbons to manufacture ethylene or other alkenes. The mixed-C4 stream is

then routed to a recovery unit, where the butadiene is separated.

Product Description:

1, 3-Butadiene is a colourless, non-corrosive, flammable gas with a hydrocarbon odour at

ambient temperature and pressure; it is liquid below 24 degrees F. It is shipped as a

liquefied compressed gas with Mild aromatic or gasoline-like odor

The Butadiene is manufactured at Vadodara and Hazira units. At Vadodara unit, RIL

converts the Butadiene into Poly Butadiene Rubber.

Product Uses:

1, 3-Butadiene is a major product of the petrochemical industry. Its simple chemical

structure combined with its low molecular weight and high chemical reactivity makes it a

very useful building block in the synthesis of other materials. Butadiene is used

primarily as a monomer in the production of a wide range of polymers and copolymers.

Polybutadiene rubber (PBR), Styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-

Styrene (ABS) Resins, Nitrile Rubber (NBR)

Exposure Potential:

Occupational Exposure

1, 3-Butadiene's production and use in the manufacture of polymers such as synthetic

rubber, plastics and resins may result in its release to the environment through various

waste streams.

Probable Routes of Human Exposure:

The general population is exposed to this chemical primarily through ambient and indoor

air. In comparison, other media including food and drinking water contribute negligibly

to exposure to 1, 3-butadiene.

Environmental Releases:

The releases may occur from production and the major use processes.

In case of Fire:

Danger of violent reaction or explosion. Vapours may travel considerable far distances

and cause subsequent ignition. Vapours are heavier than air, may cumulate along the

ground and in enclosed spaces – danger of explosion. Do not empty into drains. When

burning, it emits carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and irritant fumes. Containers with the

substance exposed to excessive heat may explode. Keep away from sources of ignition

(e.g., heat and open flames). Keep container closed. Do not vent into atmosphere or

enclosure unless area is sufficiently ventilated to reduce vapor concentrations below

flammable limit. Forms powerful explosive peroxides

Health Information:

Information pertaining to particular dangers for human:

An association between exposure to this chemical in the occupational environment and

leukemia has been well established. In the largest and most comprehensive study

conducted to this date, involving a cohort of workers in multiple plants, mortality due to

leukemia increased with estimated cumulative exposure to 1, 3-butadiene in styrene-

butadiene industry; this association remained after controlling for exposure to styrene

and 1,3-Butadiene and was strongest in those subgroups with highest potential exposure.

An association to 1, 3-butadiene and leukemia was observed in an independently

conducted case-control study of largely the same population of workers.

1, 3-Butadiene has carcinogenic effects for humans. Substance has mutagenic effects.

Substance may have adverse effect on reproduction.

Physical Hazard Information:

GASES - FLAMMABLE (UNSTABLE)/ Fire or Explosion: EXTREMELY

FLAMMABLE. Will be easily ignited by heat, sparks or flames. Will form explosive

mixtures with air. Those substances designated with a "P" may polymerize explosively

when heated or involved in a fire. Vapors from liquefied gas are initially heavier than air

and spread along ground. Vapors may travel to source of ignition and flash back.

Cylinders exposed to fire may vent and release flammable gas through pressure relief

devices. Containers may explode when heated. Ruptured cylinders may rocket.

/Butadiene, inhibited; Butadiene, stabilized.

Regulatory Information:

Regulations may exist that govern the manufacture, sale, transportation, use, and/or

disposal of 1, 3-Butadiene. These regulations may vary by city, state, country, or

geographic region. Information may be found by requesting the Technical Data Sheet, or

requesting the relevant Material Data Safety Sheet from RIL.
