2004-05 Outlook

The Bulldogs enter the 2004-05 campaign off theirfirst league winning record and tournament semifinalsappearance in five years. Head coach Beth Couture

and the Bulldogs’ 14-15 record earned the team thedistinction of the 14th-best winning percentageimprovement in NCAA Division I last season. While thisyear’s Bulldogs at first glance seem inexperienced, many gained valuable experience on the court in 2003-04, which should allow for the momentum to continuethis season.

“I’ve been very impressed with our work ethic andattitude throughout the preseason,” said Couture, whoboasts a 278-155 record in 15 seasons as a headcoach. “Our workouts have shown that we will definitelybe a different team than last season, but we’re stilleager to take the program back to competing at achampionship level.

“Obviously, we’ll be deeper this season. Our rosterallows us the flexibility to give teams a lot of differentlooks throughout a game. I think what we lost tograduation last season in terms of athleticism, wecountered by bringing in a lot of size and skill.”

Sophomore point guard Jackie Closser takes thereins of the Bulldogs’ offense after appearing in 28games as “All-Horizon League” Nancy Bowden’sunderstudy last season. Closser joins backcourt mateEllen Hamilton, giving the Bulldogs a guard combowith three-point capabilities. The duo combined for 84treys in 2003-04, while each shot better than 35 percentfrom behind the arc. Hamilton, one of the league’s bestsharpshooters, earned league “All-Newcomer Team”accolades last season.

“Since the start of their sophomore seasons, it’sapparent that Jackie and Ellen’s maturity levels havegrown to the point where I feel very comfortable withthem handling our backcourt,” said Couture.

Freshman Ashley Conner provides depth at bothguard positions. Even though Conner has yet to appearin a collegiate contest, the Indianapolis native is nostranger to big games, helping her North Central squadto a state championship in 2004. Junior college transferJessica Smart gives the Bulldogs backcourt addedathleticism. At Cincinnati State, Smart got the reputationas a shut-down defender, often matching up with theopposition’s best perimeter player. Courtney Lickliter, one of the team’s three seniors, is entering her secondseason at Butler after transferring from LewisUniversity, one of the Bulldogs’ non-conferenceopponents this season. She saw action in eight gamesin 2003-04 and serves as one of the team’s threecaptains this season.

“We have many different options for our backcourt,”said Couture. “We have the ability to put an offensive ordefensive tandem on the court, or we can put

personnel in depending on if we need shooting ordriving capabilities. This is something we haven’t beenable to do in the past.”

In addition to Bowden’s graduation, the Bulldogsalso will have to overcome the departure of the team’sstarting forwards, Angel Mason and Dionne Goodwin.Junior Jessica Monaco and senior Maria Marchesano

became regular contributors toward the end of the2003-04 season, providing an offensive punch as theBulldogs won six of their final eight games. Each shotaround the 40 percent mark from three-point land lastseason, highlighted by Marchesano’s 4-of-4 shootingfrom behind the arc in six minutes of action in theBulldogs’ 89-81 win over UIC Feb. 12.

“Looking back on last season, the most importantpart of Maria and Jessica seeing a lot of action downthe stretch was their confidence level going into thisseason,” said Couture. “They should be able to step inand help to fill the void of players we lost tograduation.”

Junior Stephanie Boeke has made 11 starts duringher Butler tenure and sparked the Bulldogs in theirupset win over Chattanooga last season. In that game,Boeke scored a season-high nine points and had three

assists. Freshman Cassie Freeman is the secondIndiana All-Star to join the Butler roster in as manyyears, along with Closser, a 2003 selection. Freeman, from nearby Heritage Christian High School, amassedmore than 1,700 points during her high school career, helping the Eagles to a state runner-up finish in 2004.

“Cassie is the type of player on the wing that bringssize and strength, in addition to being able to shoot,”said Couture. “She’ll cause mismatches because shecan go inside or out and be effective.”

The center position provides the Bulldogs with themost stability as sophomore starter Ashley Brenden

returns along with senior Cortney Urquhart, the team’sleading returning scorer. Urquhart should eclipse the1,000-point plateau during the season and will bemotivated to continue the program’s rise to the upperechelon of the Horizon League, seeing the teamimprove from a 3-26 squad her freshman year.

Urquhart received preseason second team “All-Horizon League” honors this season, as she enters the2004-05 season as the Bulldogs’ active leader in moststatistical categories. Brenden started 20 games lastseason and finished among the Horizon Leagueleaders in blocked shots. The 6-3 Brenden also has theability to hit the mid-range jumper and step behind thearc and knock down shots.

“We feel confident about our low block play with theminutes that Cortney and Ashley saw last season,” saidCouture. “We also feel that they can play together incertain situations because of their talent in addition totheir size.”

Nikki Budgake, a junior, has appeared in 37games for the Bulldogs in her two seasons inIndianapolis. The North Canton, Ohio native is one ofButler’s two players who stand 6-3. NewcomersCandace Bain and Gina Grussing should bothcontribute immediately. Bain, a versatile 6-2 forward/center, has the ability to hit the trey and work down lowon the block. Coming from Clarksville, Ind., Bainfinished as her school’s career leader in both pointsand rebounds, earning honorable mention All-Stateaccolades.

Grussing, a junior college transfer from ParklandJunior College, gives the Bulldogs a defensive andrebounding presence on the interior. After becomingArmstrong High School’s career leading scorer, rackingup more than 2,000 points, Grussing earned “Player ofthe Year” and “Freshman of the Year” honors by theCollegiate Conference of Central Illinois in her firstseason at Parkland. Shooting just shy of 60 percentfrom the field that season, Grussing finished seventh inthe nation in field goal percentage.

“Even though we return two strong post players inAshley and Cortney, we feel like our depth in the

Depth, Versatility Highlight 2004-05 Roster

frontcourt will allow us to play more aggressively andhave competition for spots,” said Couture. “It’s a plusfor us that we have a lot of talent so our practices willbe extremely competitive.”

When Beth Couture arrived in Indianapolis two seasons ago, she knew she faced thetoughest challenge of her coaching career. The Butler team that went 3-26 the season beforeshe took the reins hardly resembled her squads at Presbyterian, where she won nearly 70percent of her games over the course of 13 seasons. But, after developing the roster sheinherited and infusing that roster with two talented recruiting classes, Couture orchestrated the14th greatest improvement in the NCAA last season, leading the Bulldogs to their first HorizonLeague winning record in five seasons.

Couture has at least doubled the Bulldogs’ win total in each of her two seasons inIndianapolis. Butler finished the 2003-04 campaign with a 14-15 record, including a 9-7 leaguemark and appearance in the semifinals of the league tournament. The Bulldogs came togetherwhen it counted most, posting victories in nine of the team’s final 13 games to climb into thetop half of the Horizon League standings.

Entering her third season on the Butler sidelines, Couture has re-established the program’sties to Indiana’s rich basketball heritage. Her first two recruiting classes have each included anIndiana All-Star (Jackie Closser in 2003 and Cassie Freeman in 2004). In addition, Greenfield,Ind., native Ellen Hamilton received Horizon League “All-Newcomer Team” accolades followingthe 2003-04 season.

After taking over the Presbyterian program prior to the 1989-90 season, Couture compiledan impressive 258-117 (.688) overall record including eight 20-win seasons. In addition, sheled the program to six trips to the NCAA Division II National Tournament in her last nine years.Couture spent two seasons as an assistant at Presbyterian from 1987-89, coming to Clinton,S.C., after three years at thehelm of Dixie High School inDue West, S.C.

Couture accumulated along list of accomplishmentswhile at Presbyterian College. She led the team to threestraight South AtlanticConference (SAC) regularseason and SAC Tournamenttitles from 1998 to 2000. Afour-time SAC “Coach of theYear” recipient, Couturementored 18 all-conferenceselections and threeconference “Players of theYear.”

One of the highlights ofCouture’s career came duringthe 1999-2000 season whenthe Blue Hose placedthemselves in the recordbooks with a 28-2 mark. Thatteam won the SAC regularseason title with a 15-1record, won the SACTournament title and hostedthe NCAA Division II SouthAtlantic RegionalTournament. Presbyterianwas ranked as high as fourthin the nation during thatseason.

2005 NCAA Women’s Final Four In IndianapolisAfter hosting the men’s Final Four on four occa-

sions, the women’s Final Four comes to the RCA Domein Indianapolis for the first time April 3 and 5, 2005.Butler University and the Horizon League will serve asco-hosts for the largest event in college women’sbasketball. A number of auxillary events come to India-napolis as well, including the Women’s BasketballCoaches Association (WBCA) National Convention andthe WBCA All-Star Challenge, a game recognizingsome of the game’s biggest stars.

The national semifinals will be played Sunday, April3, while the national championship game is scheduledfor Tuesday, April 5. The RCA Dome has served as thehost venue for the men’s Final Four in 1980, 1991,1997 and 2000, and will host the event in 2006 and2010. In October, the NCAA announced that theWomen’s Final Four will also return to Indianapolis in2011.

2005 Horizon League

Women’s Basketball ChampionshipPrior to the 2003-04 season, the Horizon LeagueExecutive Council passed a proposal to change theWomen’s Basketball Championship format. The newformat moved the championship from a predeter-mined site to multiple sites.

The first round game and the quarterfinalgames are played on campus sites. In the first roundgame, the No. 8 seed hosts the No. 9 seed. Thatgame is scheduled for Tuesday, March 1, 2005. Thewinner of that game will travel to the No. 1 seed forone of four quarterfinal match-ups, Thursday, March3. The No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 seeds will host the No.7, No. 6 and No. 5 seeds, respectively, with the fourwinners advancing to the semifinals.

Under the pure format, the No. 1 seed (orhighest remaining seed if the No. 1 seed were to getbeaten in the quarterfinals) would host both thesemifinal (Sunday, March 6) and championship(Monday, March 7) rounds. However, the format change will not go into full effect until 2007 since UW-Milwaukee (2004), Wright State (2005) and Youngstown State (2006) retain the hosting rights awarded toeach institution prior to the proposal being passed. UW-Milwaukee hosted the semifinals and champion-ship rounds last season despite UW-Green Bay winning the regular season championship.

2005 Postseason
