On 5th January 2012 Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rana Pongruengphant, Dean of the International College at Burapha University, Prof. Dr. Suchart Upatham, consultant to the Dean, and Faculty members of BUUIC offered a warm welcome and orientation for three exchange students who will be attending BUUIC for the 2012 Spring semester which runs from January to May: 1. Welcome Executive Visitors from Sekolah Tinggi Pariwisata Trisakti, Jakarta Indonesia

On 12th January 2012 Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rana Pongruengphant, Dean of Burapha University International College, welcomed two administrators from Sekolah Tinggi Pariwisata Trisakti (STP Trisakti) Jakarta, Indonesia: Mr. Agus Riyadi, the Coordinator for the International Program, and Mr. Surya Fajar Budiman, Kajur UPW, from the School of Hospitality and Tourism. Following their welcome Dean Rana led a very fruitful discussion regarding future academic cooperation between the two institutions focusing on a double degree program in Hospitality and Tourism. We expect that many Indonesian students will apply to participate in this program which will begin in 2012.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rana Pongruengphant, Dean of the International College received a team from the Faculty of Education, Burapha University headed by Assist. Prof. Dr. Chareonwich Sompongtam, Director of the Innovation Administration and Educational Leadership Center for a study visit on 16th January 2012. During the visit they discussed the topic of administrating the International Program.

QA Networking Forum among Faculties College and institutions

On 19th January 2012 Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rana Pongruengphant, Dean of BUUIC led a forum on ‘Establishing a QA Network’. Among those attending the forum were an administrative teams from the Faculty of Medicine and Sport Sciences at Burapha University, Technology Rajamongkol University, and King Mongkut Technology Institute, Ladkrabang . Among the issues discussed were sharing knowledge, experience and ideas for developing a QA Network. The guest speakers were Mr. Tawin Juntrasak and Mr. Piyachart Chokpipat from the QA Center, King Mongkut Institute of Technology.

The 1st International Student ConferenceOn 23th - 25th January 2012 Mr. Samart Plangpramool, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, BUUIC instructor Miss Passarin Phalitnonkiata, and 4 BUUIC students: Mr. Witt Kongrattanachart, Mr. Natthapat Khemakkarachokkul, Miss Chowmonta Thanutamo and Miss On-chanog Pukswat attended “The 1st International Student Conference” at Khon Kaen University. The students participated in a discussion with students from other Thai undergraduate international programs on the topic of “Innovation for Harmonious Living in a Borderless Society”. In addition the BUUIC students made both oral and poster presentations as part of a competition for which they received the award of “Second Runner up”. The advisors for this project were Dr. Kumutinee Jaroenrat , Assistant Dean for Academic affairs and Chair of B.A. Program and Mr. Samart Plangpramool , Assistant Dean for Student Affairs.

Visited Cordially Mr. Jack Min Intanate on Chinese New Year

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rana Pongruengphant, Dean of BUUIC and some other members of her administrative team accompanied two exchange students from National Kaohstung First University of Science and Technology (NKFUST), Taiwan: Mr. Liu You-HAO and Miss Chou Po-Ting on a visit to SVOA Public Company Limited (SVOA) for Chinese New Year on the 25th of January 2012. During the vist the group met with Mr. Jack Min Intanate, the Founder and CEO of SVOA. Mr. Intanate has been supporting BUUIC and this particular exchange program for many years. The visitors also took the opportunity to see SVOA’s high tech communication system showroom.

The International College’s Host Family ProgramOn 24th January 2012 Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rana Pongruengphant and her team were pleased to welcome Mrs. Wannee Srisati, the Manager of Burapha E.P. School, Pattaya who will be serving as the host family for Mr. Joshau Charles Plowman, an exchange student from Appalachian State University, Boone, North Carolina. He will be attending BUUIC during the 2012 Spring semester. By staying with a host family Joshua won’t feel lonely so far from home and in addition he will have a wonderful opportunity to experience authentic Thai culture first hand.

Award Certificate to Student Exchange Program

On 27th Janauray 2012 BUUIC’s Dean, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rana Pongruengphant, awarded a certificate to Mr. Jeremy Wyatt Akin, an exchange student from Appalachian State University (ASU), North Carolina, USA, for successfully completing the 2012 fall semester. As a result Jeremy will receive eighteen academic credits which will be transferred to ASU.

Global Business Leadership Camp 2012 From KoreaOn 30th Januaray 2012 Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rana Pongruengphant, Dean of the International College and other faculty members of BUUIC welcomed a lecturer and 14 students from Chungnam National University, College of Economics and Management (CNU), South Korea under the Global Business Leadership Camp 2012 Program. During their two week stay the CNU students sat in classes with regular BUUIC students. In addition they made a study visit to some local businesses and experienced some Thai arts and culture activities.

Visit Sekolah Tinggi Pariwisata Trisakti (STP Trisakti), Jakarta, IndonesiaOn 2nd of February to the 4th February, 2012, Prof. Dr. Sompol Pongthai, President of Burapha University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rana Pongruengphant, Dean of BUUIC and Prof. Dr. Suchart Upatham, Dean’s Consultant along with lecturers from the Department of Tourism and Hotel Management visited the President and some of his key administrators of Sekolah Tinggi Pariwisata Trisakti (STP Trisakti) Jakarta, Indonesia. During the visit they finalized a formal agreement regarding collaboration between the two institutions in the form of a double degree program focusing on Tourism and Hotel Management. Furthermore BUUIC agreed to accept many Indonesian students from STP Trisakti into the International College starting in September 2012.

BUUIC Welcomes Vice-president from Appalachian State UniversityAssoc. Prof. Dr. Rana Pongruengphant, Dean of the International College welcomed Dr. Jesse Lutabingwa, Vice-President of International Education, Appalachian State University, North Carolina , USA on February 6, 2012. One purpose of this visit was to follow up the student exchange program with ASU. Dr. Jesse Lutabingwa met with the host family of the ASU exchange student and also met with the parents of the BUUIC exchange student who is studying at ASU for one semester. In addition Dr. Lutabingwa and the Dean explored the possibility of both colleges conducting a ‘2+2’ double degree program. Dr. Lutabingwa concluded his stay with visits to the Piboonbumpen Demonstration School and Burapha E.P. School, Pattaya to observe their English programs.

BUUIC Welcome Visitors from Naresuan UniversityOn the 6th February 2012 Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rana Pongruengphant, Dean of Burapha International College, welcomed some administrators from the International College of Naresuan University. They shared experiences and ideas regarding the development of academic programs in response to Thailand joining the ASEAN Community in 2015.

Public Relation Burapha University International College The Dean of BUUIC, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rana Pongruengphant, and her administrative team made a public relations visit to the International Eastern Seaboard School and Chonkanyanukool School in Chonburi on the 8th and 14th of February 2012 respectively. They presented guidelines for those high school students wishing to further their study at BUUIC.

BUUIC OPEN HOUSE 2012On the 10th of February BUUIC conducted its OPEN HOUSE 2012. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rana Pongruengphant, Dean, and BUUIC lecturers and staff welcomed about 500 students from 20 high schools and International Schools from the Eastern region of Thailand. During the OPEN HOUSE students visited classrooms, laboratories and other facilities in the College. Students attended lectures presented in English as well as participated in the hotel and the food and beverage labs at BUUIC.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rana Pongruengphant, Dean of BUUIC and BUUIC lecturers welcomed administrators, teachers, and parents from TRI DUC Education J.S. Co. P.R. Vietnam on the 10th of February 2012. The possibility of having Vietnamese students study at BUUIC was considered. It is hoped that this visit will lead to a formal academic collaboration between the two institutions in the near future.

Seminar for Student Leader Clubs Network from 3 universitiesOn the 17th of February 2012, the International College hosted a seminar for a student club leaders network joining three Thai universities. The 120 leaders came from the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Sport Science, the International College at Burapha University, Rajamangala University of Technology Tawan-ok and King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang. Group activities were led by professors from the Faculty of Sport Science while academic activities were headed by lecturers from the International College. These activities served to strengthen the relationships among the students and allow them to share their ideas and experiences among the students from different universities and faculties/colleges.

Welcome Delegation from STiPRAM, Aceh and Gadjah Mada University, IndonesiaOn 18th February 2012, the Dean of BUUIC, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rana Pongurengphant welcomed Suhendroyono, SH. MM., M. Par. the President of STiPRAM, Dr. H. Muchtar Mahmud. MH. MBA. Directur Academi Pariwisata Muhammadyah Aceh and Prof. Dr. Marsono Head of Undergraduate Program, Gadjah Mada University and their teams to BUUIC. It is hoped that this visit will serve as a big step toward further collaboration between BUIIC and these institutions in Indonesia.

BUUIC hosted the sermonOn 2nd March 2012 BUIIC Dean Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rana Pongruengphant, Prof. Dr. Suchart Upatham, Dean’s consultant, along with lecturers, staff and BUUIC students hosted a sermon on ‘7th Mahapon’ (Big forest) in the main auditorium of Burapha University. The ceremony was an inspiration to all of those in attendance.

Knowledge Management Forum on E-LearningAssoc. Prof. Dr. Rana Pongruengphant, Dean of Burapha University International College recently chaired a “Knowledge Management” forum on E-Learning at BUUIC. The key speaker was BUUIC’s Dr. Hermann Gruenwald, whose major area of specialization is Education and Management Information Systems. Twenty-five participants from the Faculty of Medicine and BUUIC attended the forum which took place on March 12th, 2012. Additional sessions will be held on the 26th of March and the 14th of May.

ASEAN exhibition 2012 contestOn 13rd March 2012, BUUIC Dean Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rana Pongruengphant, and students representing the BUUIC student body welcomed the judging committee for the ASEAN 2012 Exhibition Contest. The exhibition will be shown at the first floor of BUUIC hall from 20th February to 31st March 2012. The Exhibition will help focus public attention on the important issues involving preparation for Thailand’s entry into the ASEAN community in 2015.

ASEAN Study Camp Visit TRI DUC Education, J.S.co., Ho Chi Min City, VietnamCerebrate 9th year anniversary of BUUIC

ASEAN Study Camp 2012

On 16th March 2012, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rana Pongruengphant, Dean of BUUIC; Prof. Dr. Suchart Upatham, the Dean’s advisor; Mr. Wongpinyo Chiengthong, a member of the Board of Trustees , together with BUUIC faculty and staff marked the 9th year anniversary of BUUIC with a merit making ceremony at Nong Ree Temple, Chacheongsao province. A 35 inch Golden Buddha statute and over 12,000 baht were donated to the temple.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rana Pongruengphant, Dean of Burapha University International College (BUUIC) , Prof. Dr. Suchart Upathum, the Dean’s Consultant, together with BUUIC faculty members, were honoured to welcome Prof. Dr. Sompol Phongthai , President of Burapha University, to officially open the “ASEAN Study Camp 2012” which was held on 29th -30th March 2012. There were 104 participants, including school principals, vice-principals and teachers representing 40 high schools from the 12 eastern provinces of Thailand as well as other provinces across the country. The main aim of the program was to create an awareness among Thai teachers in preparation for Thailand’s entry into the ASEAN Community in 2015. It was hoped that those in attendance would be able to apply the knowledge and skills they learned at the camp toward their teaching and administrative duties thereby creating confidence and a positive attitude in their students towards the ASEAN Community. The honorable guest speakers were Prof. Dr. Sompol Pongthai, President of Burapha University, Prof. Dr. Ir. H. Didik Sulistyanto, Education and Culture Head Division Embassy of Indonesia, Ms. Churairat Sangboonnum , Deputy Permanent Secretary for Education , Ms. Nith Rojratanavanit Director of 5th Office of Education Strategy Management and Integration , Ms. Pornthip Kanchananiyot Thailand-US Educational Foundation (Moderator) and Mr. Kimcheang Hong, Educational Executive from Cambodia.

From 31st March – 2nd April, 2012, Assoc. Prof. Dr.Rana Pongruengphant Dean of the International College, Burapha University, led 22 participants of the ASEAN Study Camp 2012 from 10 high schools in 4 provinces of Thailand including Directors, Deputy Directors, and Teachers on a visit to local historical and cultural attractions. In addition a study visit was organized for TRI DUC Education, J.S.co., Ho Chi Min City, Vietnam

Songkran Festival DayAssoc. Prof. Dr. Rana Pongruengphant , Dean of the Burapha University Intenational College and Professor Dr. Suchart Upatham, the Dean’s Consultant presided over a ceremony in celebration of “Songkran”, the Thai New Year, on the 5th of April 2012 in the BUUIC Dining Hall. The ceremony was attended by BUUIC’s faculty members and students. Among the activities was a water blessing for the elderly. Traditional Thai Music was performed by the Senior Citizens Association of Burapha University and a traditional Thai dance was performed by one of the students. The event was intended to help emphasize at the value of the Songkran ritual as a part of Thai culture.

BUUIC Visit Far East University , South Korea International day “Your Journey to ASEAN”

Opening ceremony of the Indonesian Study Center

Prof. Dr. Sompol Pongthai, President of Burapha University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rana Pongruengphant, Dean of Burapha University International College, Prof. Dr. Suchart Upatham, Dean’s Consultant led a group of BUUIC lecturers and administrative staff on a visit to South Korean between the 6th-10th of April 2012. The trip included an educational study visit to the Far East University, South Korea. In addition the group visited other historical and cultural sites in South Korea.

On the 26th April 2012, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rana Pongruengphant, Dean of BUUIC served as the chairwoman for the opening ceremony of International day, entitled “Your Journey to ASEAN”, held in the Dining Hall at BUUIC. The main purpose of this event was to provide information regarding the ASEAN community to BUUIC students and staff.

H.E. Mr. Lutfi Rauf, Ambassador of Indonesian Embassy and Prof. Dr. Sompol Pongthai, President, Burapha University and other distinguished guests including an Indonesian delegation participated in the official opening of the “Indonesian Study Center” at Burapha University International College on 23rd April 2012. As part of the ceremony, an Indonesian dancer performed a traditional Indonesian dance. In addition some fine examples of Indonesian culture were on display.

On the 15th May 2012, Professor Dr. Kasem Suwannakul , Chairman of Burapha University Council, visited BUUIC and gave some valuable recommendations for advancing BUUIC’s reputation in the global academic community. In addition Dr. Kasem encouraged and motivated all BUUIC lecturers and staff in attendance to continue to work hard in the future.

BUUIC Global Leadership Camp Rajamangala University of Technology Krungthep visited BUUICBetween 12th -14th May 2012, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rana Pongruengphant, Dean of BUUIC led a team of faculty members and student club members on a study visit to Sengsavanh Education Group, PDR Laos. During their visit, the students conducted a seminar and shared experiences and knowledge about current business issues and Thai culture with 40 Laotian students. Both BUUIC and Sengsavanh Educational Group students had a very good time at a Global Leadership Camp which took place during the visit and included a Laotian traditional dance and the singing of the ASEAN song.

Appalachian State University visited BUUICOn 31st May 2012, Assoc. Prof. Dr.Rana Pongruenphant, Dean of Burapha University International College, and other BUUIC lecturers had the opportunity to welcome a group of administrators from Appalachian State University (ASU), North Carolina, United States to BUUIC. The welcome took place in the Teleconference Jack Min Intanate Room. The delegates were Dr. Anthony Gene Carey, Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs & Professor of History, Office of Academic Affairs; Prof. Ray Miller, Theatre & Dance; Prof. Jeanne Dubino, Global Studies & English; and Mr. Steve Breiner, Learning Technology Service. The purpose of the visit was to plan for the “Global Understanding” course which will be jointed administrated by BUUIC and ASU through teleconferencing and other IT facilities in the Fall semester 2012.

Assoc.Prof.Dr.Rana Pongruenphant, Dean of Burapha University International College together with BUUIC lecturers welcomed the Dean and lecturers from Rajamangala University of Technology, Bangkok. The purpose of the visit was to observe teaching and learning at BUUIC on the topic of the ASEAN Community.

Burapha University International College organized a “Getting Ready for Work Seminar 2012” for its 3rd and 4th year students between May 14th -16th 2012. Conducted by BUUIC instructors this seminar aimed to prepare students before they begin working at a company as part of the BUUIC Cooperative Education and Internship program. Among the topics covered in the seminar were: problem solving skills, proper behavior and safety in the workplace. Eventually the students will be invited to share their knowledge, experience and problems during their internship period.

New Instructors

Dr. Hermann Gruenwald a U.S. citizen joined BUUIC this summer to pursue his teaching, research and service interests at a dynamic international university with a picture perfect location near the beach.

Dr. Hermann comes with extensive higher education experience both as faculty and administrator in the USA and Thailand. He lectured and collaborated with universities around the world creating knowledge and facilitating learning. Parallel to his academic career he also has a successful industry career ranging from manager to Senior VP, working with companies like FedEx, Hilton, IBM, and various government agencies and healthcare organizations designing and implementing physical as well as IT architecture. Dr. Hermann has earned an engineering degree from his native Germany, a Master of Architecture

from the University of Houston, Master in Education from the University of Oklahoma, an MBA from Southern Methodist University in Dallas and a Ph.D. from OU. He is a registered architect, interior architect and developer. Dr. Hermann is looking forward to continue his successful track record in teaching, consulting and research in the areas of logistics and information systems as they apply to various industries such as healthcare and hospitality.

Painya (Goh) has started at BUUIC for part-time instructor since 2010. He has taught in Thai Language for Communication I and II. Before coming to BUUIC, he worked as part-time instructor at the following institutions such as Burapha University, Rajamangala University of Technology Tawan-ok (Bang Pra) and Rajabhat Rajanagarindra University. He has also serve as part-time tour guide in outbound and inbound. At the present, he is a part of BUUIC in Hotel and Tourism Management since January, 2012.

Parinya holds Master of International Hospitality and Hotel Management, University of western Sydney, Australia and B.A. in Thai Major, Burapha University, Thailand.

His favorite activities are reading books and traveling. He says he love to travel and share some experiences to the others.

New Instructors

Passarin (Kung) has been teaching at BUUIC since January 2012. Her teaching courses are in marketing field. She holds a MSc. in strategic marketing from Cardiff University (the UK), and B.B.A. in marketing management from Thammasat University (Thailand).

Before attending BUUIC, she worked at Double A (1991) Co., Ltd. as Product Development and Management. Moreover, she also worked at Honda Trading Asia Co., Ltd. as Sales Associate in Bangkok.

Her favorite activities are reading books, articles and magazines, playing piano and Thai classical music instruments. She enjoys travelling around, and playing sports.

Ms. Passarin Phalitnonkiat

Ms. Christine Lee joined the BUUIC faculty in January 2012. Her educational background includes an MBA in International Marketing as well as a B.S. in Information and Computer Science (with a minor in Mathematics) from the University of California Irvine. She had worked at an American multinational company and lectured at several universities for over 20 years before she joined BUUIC. She holds a license to teach the Korean Language to foreigners. In addition, she also studied TESOL. At BUUIC, she lectures on marketing and marketing related courses.

Christine is a U.S. citizen, although she is originally from Korea. Her moving to the United States of America at the age of nine made her bilingual, bicultural and a ‘Korean-American’. This background of hers has become an asset for her career moves.

She had worked for an American multinational company for 18 years as a sales and marketing manager and was offered an executive position at a medium-sized company in Korea where she stayed for two years. While she was working at these companies, she lectured at universities in Korea for about five years. After 20 years of working in the private sector, she began her new experience in 2009 at Chungnam National University in Korea, where she had committed herself until she and her family decided to move back to America in 2011.

Whenever she has a chance, she jumps at the opportunity to experience new things. Hence, she did not mind gaining some new knowledge while taking on a position and working at the overseas countries away from home in America with the help of her husband and family. She loves everything about BUUIC, including the BUUIC campus and the BUUIC yellow buses. She also loves Thailand, Thai food, Thai mangos, Thai massages, and the Thai islands. According to her, she even loves the HOT weather of Thailand. She says that she could stay here ‘forever and ever’ if only her family was here with her.

..…on the 9th anniversary of BUUIC

On the international avenue that we are walking, we see 9 years old BUUIC. We know that BUUIC has grown into a high ranked International College in Thailand and our faculty, our staff, our students and our graduates are recognized for the excellence we embrace.

BUUIC is a home for all of you hence all of you are in one family. And we are in a warm family with lots of caring and sharing.We want to build a good home for our family members so that they will feel at home at BUUIC, always.

I also wish to build a strong bond between BUUIC and our current students, future students and alumni. We want them to know that each and every one of them

are valued and we are proud of them very much. We always think that our students are forever our students, regardless of time.

Let’s walk through this exciting phase together to the 21st century.
