How Ebay Works

• A seller lists an item on eBay– Auction Style listing or Buy It Now listing

• Auction Style-- the bidding opens at a price the seller specifies and remains on eBay for a certain number of days.– Buyers then place bids on the item. When the

listing ends, the buyer with the highest bid wins.• Buy it NOW--the first buyer willing to pay the

seller's price gets the item.

Registration• Provide your name and email address to open

an account– Personal or Business account

• Create a username and password at registration that will represent you in the Ebay community

• You can register two accounts—i.e. one for buying and one for selling– Must have different user IDs and email address– Can not be used in the same listing

• The idea is to place your maximum bid amount—this is how much you’re willing to pay for the item.

• Can place multiple bids on an item. – If you register you can create a watchlist* – Send alerts when a new bid comes in– Automated bids

• In most cases, you can’t cancel your bid, so BE SERIOUS!

• Can be excluded from bidding*• Once the item closes, the item goes to the

highest bidder• Should pay within 3 days of close

• Look at the seller feedback before purchase!– Scores the seller on a scale 100 with positive,

negative and neutral feedback options– Shows how many items they’ve sold– Other items for sale– Written feedback as well– Contact Information*

• Make sure to check the methods of payment before bidding or buying it at a fixed price

• Popular payment options include:– PayPal- credit card or bank account– BillMeLater- subject to credit approval– Direct credit card or bank card payment– Escrow- mostly for vehicles– Payment upon pickup

• Look at the shipping options and estimated delivery dates.– Especially if you’re ordering internationally!

• Note the refund options before buying– Great idea to only purchase from sellers that are

eBay Buyer Protection certified*• Use the Pay Now option or Pay later through

Selling on Ebay

• Create a seller’s account– Same personal information except everything MUST

be verified by Ebay• Set up an automatic payment method for seller’s

fees and ebay buyer protection reimbursements– Insertion fee*– Final value fee*

• Read the Do’s and Don’ts and seller agreement!• Click the Sell link at the top of any eBay page to

start selling your stuff!

Create a Listing

• To create a listing, you need to provide your item's title, description, price, and shipping and payment information. – Start your listing by simply describing your item.• Specify condition of the item• Add a photo

– Identify the categories for the item– Look at similar items for help with pricing and

listing format or look at the pricing guide on Ebay

• Set your price for Buy It Now or your reserve price for auctions*

• Clarify your accepted payment methods• Listing Duration*• Set the shipping price– Charge a flat fee or calculate shipping costs
