BUZZ! WINTER EDITION 2010

Welcome to the spring edition of Buzz! We are delighted to keep you informed about all the exciting

activities happening at Priestlands and involving the surrounding community. We are always open to new ideas so if there are any workshops or classes that you would like us to offer, issues you would like raised, projects you would like to get involved in or ideas for new enterprises please contact Gill Hastelow on 01590 613478 or [email protected]

ART Year 7 These are some of the ceramic outcomes from Year 7, looking at mosaics and producing work inspired by dragon flies and butterflies.

Year 8 These wonderful pieces were produced by Klaudia Wojciezak and Robert Savin in Year 8 as part of their homework on Identity.

Year 9 Dramatic front pages created for a Year 9 project on Creatures.

Year 10 3D Ceramic Workshop Year 10 3D art students were invited to come in after school to let their imaginations run riot at a ceramic workshop. As ever the potter’s wheel proved popular but other methods of ceramic modelling were explored too.

Year 9 3D Abstract birds being created as part of the Year 9 ‘Creatures’ project! Exciting shapes being made and waiting for decoration.

STAFF CHRISTMAS CERAMICS Over 26 members of staff let their imaginations run riot creating ceramic masterpieces at a Christmas Ceramic workshop run by the Art Department. Some tried their skills on the potter’s wheel, whilst others created gifts for loved ones! With mulled wine and cake the enjoyable event was a great start to Christmas celebrations.

MUSIC Blues Day Our new Year 7 students were invited to listen to our talented music tutors perform for them. The musicians introduced and demonstrated the use of the bass and electric guitar and drums to our students. For some it was the first time they had heard these instruments being played live and some students were even inspired to take up lessons through our instrumental teaching programme. Many thanks to Joe Dunwoody, Tim Rea and Danny Pearson, a visiting drum teacher who stepped in to help out.

Arts Award Trip to Shorelines at St Barbe

On 10th November Philip Dowd, Head of Music, took his Year 9 Arts Award students to St Barbe Museum to see

Shorelines – Artists on the South Coast exhibition and take part in a workshop run by St Barbe. The exhibition

takes the Channel coast as its subject, exploring the way artists from the 18th century to the present day have

drawn inspiration from the cliffs, beaches and harbours of England’s southern border. The exhibition looks at

the contrasting approaches taken by resident and visiting artists who drew inspiration from the shoreline

between Cornwall and Kent.

Artists in the exhibition included Constable, Turner, Knight, Nash, Nevinson, and more recently Kurt Jackson.

Charity Concert On Wednesday 18th November students from all year groups took part in our Charity Music Concert. Vocals, guitars, and flute amongst many others were represented on the night. With many fine performances the evening was a great success and enjoyed by everyone, raising £246.50 for charity.

Mini V

We are delighted to be able to run the Mini V project in conjunction with Hampshire Music Service which takes place on a Wednesday from 3.30pm. Students from our feeder schools are invited to learn a string instrument in a group environment without the expense of purchasing an instrument as these are kindly provided at a minimum cost by Hampshire Music Service. The group along with some students from Priestlands performed at the school charity concert.

The yellow brick road, flying houses and witches along with a special appearance of Maddie as Toto all made an amazing evening.

Shakespeare Schools Festival 2015 Once again our Drama Department were delighted to take part in the Shakespeare Schools Festival 2015. This event encourages schools throughout the country to take part in workshops and performances at local theatres. Priestlands’ specially selected students from Years 10 and 11 performed their version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Poole Lighthouse to much acclaim.
