CURRICULUM RELEVANCELife processesHumans and other animalsLiving things in theirenvironmentFeeding relationshipsMinibeasts; Habitats

Literacy Poetry - including choral,

Sustainability Creative curriculum

JAMES BOND VS JANE BONDJust like James Bond (007), Jane Bond (a female worker bumblebee):

plays a vitally important role in national (food) security - we havebees to thank for 1 in 3 mouthfuls of food we eat (because theypollinate crops)

is equipped with special gadgets - her built-in pollen baskets anda secret weapon, i.e. the ‘sting in her tail’

faithfully serves her Queen - the queen bumblebee in her nest.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES Read the poem ‘Jane Bond’ (see next page) out loud to the class. Discuss the information contained in the poem and in the associated

‘Factabulous’ box, plus the James Bond vs Jane Bond points below. Ask the children to learn and perform ‘Jane Bond’, either individ-

ually, in groups or as a whole class. Discuss how the poem works, and what the pupils enjoy about it. Ask the children to write a minibeast poem, perhaps in the guise

of a well-known character, perhaps including factual information. Go outdoors (when it’s sunny) and look for bumblebees and the

flowers they might be attracted to. Plant more flowers for them!

INTRODUCTIONThis ‘Jane Bond’ resource is based on an extract from my book Buzzing!(Discover the poetry in garden minibeasts), which has a Foreword by theBumblebee Conservation Trust and is a National Insect Week recommendedKS2 children’s book and teachers’ resource.Buzzing! marries science with humorous rhyming poetry to create across-curricular resource that both educates and entertains.

GET YOUR SCHOOL BUZZING! I visit primary schools nationwide to put on Buzzing! shows in which

I perform a selection of the poems from my Buzzing! book to abackdrop of projected close-up minibeast images. Read feedback.

I also offer follow-up poetry, photography and/or minibeast workshops. Schools often invite me to visit during their book/poetry/science/green

week or when working towards Eco-Schools or ArtsMark awards. I am a member of Equity and NAWE (National Association of Writers

in Education). I am CRB checked and have public liability insurance.
