Balavidyalayam Annual Day 2013 Page 1
Introduction (roshan on stage)
Purity or Sauca in Sanskrit is derived from the Sanskrit root 'suc' means to be pure, clean.
Purity is understood to in a twofold sense: Bahya Sauca, external cleanliness and Antara
Sauca, inner cleanliness.
Bahya Sauca means cleanliness with respect to that which is external. A daily discipline
of maintaining a clean body, clean clothes and clean environment makes life pleasant
for oneself and others.
Antara Sauca, inner cleanliness, refers to cleanliness with regard to ones mind.
Negative reactions like anger, jealousy, and hatred are considered to be impurities of
the mind. Let us see a scene from the Ramayana
(After Roshans intro Arav & Yashwanth come on stage)
Rama: See how this confused noise is being heard. How all the animals have taken
flight? Is any king or prince hunting? O son of Sumitra! Find this out.
(Lakshmana climbs the sal tree)
Lakshmana: Please extinguish the fire and let Sita seek a cave. Keep ready your bow,
arrows and armour.
Rama: Dear Lakshmana please look carefully and tell me whose army it could be.
Lakshmana: Bharatha, son of Kaikeyi is coming fully prepared to kill us both.I see the
flag bearing Kovidaraa tree. Taking up our bows let us station ourselves. Bharatha
deserves to be killed. I shall kill Kaikeyi too.
Rama: The very mighty Bharatha, full of longing to see me has come in person. What is
the use of sword, bows and arrows. Getting angry with mother Kaikeyi and speaking
unkind words to her and obtaining fathers permission he has come to offer the throne
to me.When and what offence was done to you by Bharatha in the past? He would not
do any harm to us even with his mind. Even if I ask him to give away the kingdom to
you, Lakshmana, he will surely accept my command.
(Arav & Yashwanth stand together say Namaste & leave stage)

One way to deal with Antara asaucha it is to develop awareness for these feelings. It
means accepting ones feelings and making deliberate attempt to replace them with
opposite reactions orpratipaksha bhavana
In the above act, Lord Rama encourages the practice of pratipaksha bhavana in
Laksmana. Laksmana who is given to anger, makes erroneous judgments and speaksharshly about his brother Bharata and his step mother Kaikeyi. Rama shows him the
fallacy of his thinking and helps him to appreciate what is right and thereby helps
Laksmana to neutralizeAsauca by deliberately thinking of likeable qualities in Bharata.
